Dear Reader Hello and welcome to the August edition of the MK Flyers.

Editor

Last July and August we ran our Sponsor a Flip Flop with all proceeds going to Willen Hospice. This year we have brought summer to the flyers with our Sponsor an Ice Lolly. On the centre pages you will see the businesses in Milton Keynes that have helped and supported Willen Hospice and raised over £720 for this great cause. As we enter August, the ‘C’ word starts to make an appearance, yes CHRISTMAS. If you are amongst the ones who like to plan, than have a look at page 17 to see what Harben De Vere in Newport Pagnell have to offer. If you are you a fan of TV’s ‘Cash In the Attic’ then why not see what your nik naks that are around the house are worth. Lockdales are back in Milton Keynes in September with their very own valuation days. See page 5 for more details. Do you have a bike? Would you like to support the work done by Cancer Research UK? Why not join Carol and her team on 9th September for the annual Get on your Bike MK event and help raise money for this great cause. For full details and to register see page 41.

by Maurice Barratt

An old Newport Pagnell School photo supplied by Mr Ted Platt showing the class of 1932. There must be many families in the Town with their Grandparents or Parents shown on this photo. Back row: L - R. Bob Nursaw, Peter J Baxter, Mavis Tompkins, Dorothy Bee, Laurie Fisher, Ray Simmons, Sydney Howard, Shelia Giles, Alan Hammond, Jim Martin, Les Dorrill, Peter S Baxter. Middle Row: L - R. Girl Rees (from Willen), Laurie Adkins, Ruth Barker, Olive Chapman, Peter Emblow, Philip Burbidge, Roy Cannon, John Stow, Betty Mosley, Brenda Cole, Eric Miller. Front Row L- R. Shelia Reed, Ged Mapley, Dick Mapley, Fred Evans, Elsie Rose, Kathleen Dunbabin, Jean Cropp, Ted Platt, Cliff Alderman. Bob Nursaw and Dorothy Bee lived in Priory Court, Priory Street. Dorothy at number 2, Bob at number 5. Dorothy’s family were my parents’ next door neighbours when I was a child. Mr Jack Bee, Dorothy’s father, originally came from Peterborough, and with my father enjoyed a drink and a game of dominoes in the Bee Hive. A recollection of Mr Bert Humphries: An amusing anecdote about an old drover Billy Sinfield who lived at Moulsoe. Billy spent hours in the Bee Hive, then getting on his cart pulled by a donkey and letting the knowing animal take him home while he slept on the journey. One day, on having his fill of beer, Billy got onto the cart and let his

6 mkflyers

faithful old donkey make his way home. At the top of Priory St the donkey collapsed, a concerned passer-by tended the animal who then said to a bewildered Billy “I’m afraid it’s dead Mr Sinfield”. “Well damn me!” or expletives to that effect Billy proclaimed to the surrounding onlookers - “It’s never done that before” Philip Burbidge lived at 25 Priory Street. Les Dorrill’s family lived at 2 Northampton Terrace, Priory St. The terrace is sadly no longer in existence. Les with the help of Pip Piper went to the Grammar School at Wolverton. Ted Platt also having the opportunity for further education instead chose to get himself a job. Ted informs me he was living at 12 St John St (The Cinema) at the time of the photo. Headmaster Pip Piper also encouraged Les to join the T A. which at one time had their headquarters now where the swimming pool is today. The Territorial Army was created in 1908 by the Secretary of State for War Richard Haldane. The Baxter’s lived at 7 Park View in Tickford Street as did Peter Emblow who lived almost opposite the Bull Inn. Roy Cannon and Jean Cropp lived in Chicheley Street. Alan Hammond, Tom Hammond’s younger brother, Lived in Paggs Court. Mavis Tompkins lived in London Road after 1935, before this living in an old thatched Farm House opposite the Gas works in Caldecote St/Willen Road. Joe or John Tompkins (Mavis’s grandfather) lived in Riverside and kept the old Pub the ‘Swan Tap’ during the 1920s. This old Pub had a few old locals who frequented this tiny public house and loved to smoke and play dominoes on an old table within the premises, characters such as a young Tom Golding Snr. Cliff Alderman lived in Greenfield Road. The Mapley boys were twins. I remember them both when working at Sogenique’s in Green Farm Road off Broad Street, now the site of newly built houses. Ray Simmons now lives in Tickford St in the Bungalow I was born in. All seen on the photo if still alive, are now in their mid 80s.

Newport’s Muster goes on the hop Organisers of this year’s Newport Muster are calling for clear heads as walkers decide which route to take. Cause of the dizzying dilemma is ‘Beer’ – a new course round some of the town’s many inns, pubs and taverns which Walk Marshal Steve Tearle suspects will be one of the most popular ever. “I have to stress that half of the 6-mile route will be in the fresh air of Bury Field, the town park, and noone will need to go inside all or any of the pubs. But beyond that we shall of course leave our patrons to decide for themselves,” explained Mr Tearle. ‘Beer’ (6 miles), ‘Challenge’ (15 miles), ‘Picnic’ (3 miles) and ‘Spirits’ (9 miles), a tour of buildings said to be haunted, are the routes on offer at this year’s walking festival round ancient Newport Pagnell and its picturesque Ouse Valley. According to records from the 19th century, the thriving market town and important stop for travellers on several major roads, had a brewery of its own and the greatest number of hostelries and alehouses per head in the county. Many are no longer there, but the Muster’s ‘Beer’ route will direct walkers to the premises, past and present, of nearly 30 town pubs. Some of the great names from days gone by include the Chimney Sweep’s Arms, Horse & Jockey, March of Intellect, Jolly Gardener and Green Dragon, while today’s very much open contingent include the Dolphin, Coachmakers Arms, Cannon and Swan Revived in High Street, plus the Rose & Crown in Silver Street and Bull in Tickford Street. As well as route directions, walkers will be provided with historic information courtesy of extracts from

12 mkflyers

One More For The Road, a booklet by local authors Donald Hurst and Dennis Mynard. Mr Tearle reckons the walk should take no more than a couple of hours to complete. “Mind you,” he added, “if anyone takes four hours to get round then we’ll know where they’ve been!” Organisers of this year’s event – the fourth - are hoping to beat the record attendance in 2011 and discounted rates are on offer for early-bird entry at the website www.newportmuster.org.uk Being sponsored is not compulsory but many walkers choose to raise money for worthy causes and the hope is that Willen Hospice, this year’s Charity of Choice, will inspire support for their extraordinary work. The all-day Muster festival of walks at Newport Pagnell is on Saturday September 8. All routes start from the URC Hall off High Street from 10am. Milton Keynes has enjoyed a spectacular couple of months, we have been able to indulge in the International Festival, glimpse at the Olympic Torch as it raced through the city, had more large businesses move into the city and even celebrated yet another win for the Redbull Racing Team. It is hard to see how the year could get better for the city but I am glad to see that the summer period is going to allow us to take stock of the year so far, as we pack up on our holidays. The summer recess means I get a month in Milton Keynes to visit an array of local projects, businesses and generally spend some uninterrupted time in the constituency. It is the time in the parliamentary year I most look forward to and so I try and cram in as much as I possibly can into my diary.

I have got in the habit of running an annual mobile surgery in the villages around Milton Keynes in addition to my regular surgery at the Civic Offices. I give allotted times and places that I am due and people can come, pop by and have a word with me. Normally people just come and say hello, but occasionally there are issues which are raised and I can help with. The days, times and places for this year’s mobile surgery is as follows: Monday 6th August 10:15 Haversham – opposite the school 10:45 Castlethorpe – outside village hall 11:30 Hanslope – Market Square, High Street 13:15 Stoke Goldington – outside village hall 14:00 Gayhurst – by village notice board 14:25 Tyringham – grass triange, opposite farm entrance 15:20 Newport Pagnell – near Market Hill Medical centre Tuesday 7th August 09:45 Lavendon – outside village hall 10:45 Emberton – near clock tower 11:30 Clifton Reynes – near the Robin Hood Pub 11:50 Newton Blossomville – near the school 13:30 Sherington – The Knoll 14:30 Chicheley – outside the village hall

Wednesday 8th August 09:30 Ravenstone – by the Church 10:00 Weston Underwood – entrance to the village hall 13:30 Astwood – near the Swan pub 14:00 North Crawley – by the Institute 15:00 Moulsoe – on the bend by the village notice board Thursday 30th August 09:00 Olney – Market square Please do feel free to drop by or if you would like help with a specific issue call my office on 01908 686830. I always find it a shame when politics gets in the way of government business and the last couple of weeks of the parliamentary term saw this. Many of you, like me, will feel pretty numb to the discussion of the lord’s reform. I personally feel that considering the real problems we are facing as a country, we would be better spent discussing them. But needless to say, the reformation of the House of Lords was included in the Coalition agreement and was therefore up for discussion. I have been contacted by many of my constituents asking about my own position on the reforms which have always been clear. Since being elected in 2005 I have voted in favour of Lords reform. In the last debate in 2007 I voted in favour of reform and the continuation of a bicameral parliament. I supported a proportion of 80% elected and 20% appointed in the Upper House, whilst I rejected an all appointed or an all elected chamber. However, the devil they say is always in the detail and I am concerned about many of the details of this bill. With the timetabling motion having been delayed until the Autumn, this issue is bound to continue to be right up there on the political agenda. I will be waiting to see the outcome of the committee stages where the detail will be revealed, but I hope very much that in the meantime we can get on with discussing the really important issues like the issues arising in the wake of Libor and the impact benefit changes are having on the streets. And finally, whilst I pride myself on working hard for Milton Keynes, having never hid my love of watching and playing cricket, this month I was able to indulge in my favourite pass time at a charity game playing for the Lords and Commons. I think I reached my cricketing pinnacle by dismissing two test legends, Mohammad Yousuf and Gordon Greenwich. Fortunately for me Quentin Jones from Castlethorpe was scoring so independent verification is available!

Have a wonderful summer and I have my fingers crossed for better weather than we have been blessed with in the year already.

The Crocus

Maurice Rust, Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands

Almost everyone will be able to recognise a crocus in flower in late January or early February, usually just after the Snowdrops and Winter Aconites appear in our gardens. This beautiful small single flower seems to appear from nowhere and then suddenly masses begin to appear – a real sign that spring is on its way. They have a habit of looking a little sad if covered in snow or frost but very soon recover. Crocus bulbs become available from late August onwards and should be planted as soon as possible before the bulb begins to shoot. Ideal sites are under trees in light shade or sun, areas where they can naturalize and grow undisturbed year after year and will grow in all our local soil but they prefer well-drained soil. Crocus bulbs are often referred to as ‘corms’ a small ‘lump’ light brown in colour about the size of a 10 pence coin, with a slightly flattened base and a slightly rounded top. Crocus bulbs should be planted 2.5cm deep and about the same apart with the slightly round end uppermost.

Late winter flowering varieties The flower is small, cup-shape becoming starry and are made up of six petals and can be found in various shades of purple, mauve, orange, yellow and white, some varieties are straight colours whilst other variously striped. There are really two types

26 mkflyers

of spring flowering crocus, the smaller flowering specie crocus which are known as the ‘Chrysanthus hybrids’ are mainly white, yellow and pale mauve in colour. Among these varieties to look out for is C. Cream Beauty which pale cream in colour, C Tommasinianus, a delicate pale mauve and white petals, C. Blue Pearl is another pale blue snow flowering crocus. The larger flowering Dutch hybrid varieties are the crocus flowers that are variously striped and bold in colour. There are some good favourite varieties to look out for C. Joan of Arc one of the best whites, C. Pickwick pale mauve and white striped, C. Remembrance is a shiny deep purple colour and very striking when planted on mass, a good yellow variety is C. Mammouth yellow with deep yellow flowers.

Autumn flowering varieties This group of Crocus flower in late September and October with much large pale mauve flower heads than the winter flowering crocus, C. specious is light pale mauve in colour, C. sativus is what is commonly known as the ‘Saffron Crocus’ which has been used as a yellow dye as far back as the 7th century BC slightly darker in colour with thin red streaks in the petals. Because each flower’s stigmas need to be collected by hand and there are only a few per flower, saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. Iran now accounts for 90 percent of the worlds production of saffron. It has a bitter taste with a hay light fragrance. The saffron crocus unknown in the wild, likely descends from Crocus cartwrightianus which originated from Crete or central Asia. A little known is that the town of Saffron Walden takes its ancient name from the Saffron Crocus where the flower has been grown there for centuries for the drug industry, spice industry and the dyeing industry. Like all other bulbs allow the foliage to die down naturally after flowering completed for about six to eight weeks. As flowers fade give your crocus a top dressing of Bonemeal fertilizer to help the corm take up nutrients for the following year.

POSITIVE LIVING 2012 – What it means... Forget the scaremongering of Hollywood and hearsay. The world will not end, there will be no immediate change – we are in fact already in the middle of huge shifts and growths prophesised. Even within our own life structure we can see huge changes, physically, emotionally, historically and personally. Every life on the planet is being shook up and all we can do is hold on. Yet why is this happening? Is it some part of a cruel unfolding plan? Are we being held accountable by some vengeful deity for actions of present and past? Everything we know is being overturned, nothing seems stable. What is occurring and what if anything can we do about what’s playing out? The word is not going crazy, things are not getting worse. Life is rebalancing and we are an important part of that shift. You particularly chose to be here right now, to be alive in this time frame and the unprecedented shifts that are happening. There are many books and therefore much available information on theories relating to this, but for the purpose of this written piece, we will simplify it, to help you understand how 2012 directly affects you, even to the point of personal relationships, love, family and work. Without computer programs and technology as we know it now, our far distant ancestors knew more about planetary alignment, deep space, stars and their physical / energetic effects than we think we know even now. NASA itself has discovered deep in the centre of the Milky Way, in an area we thought was black space, a new energy source, a new star, that burns far brighter than anything else that exists in our solar system today. Nick named ‘the pistol’, if we were to place it within our local system, if would take up the whole of the space that Earth currently uses to circulate the Sun, and it would burn thousands of times brighter. This new discovery seems to be directly lined up with our own Sun and Earth – NOW. The Mayan calendar accurately predicted and pinpointed the precise date of this alignment as 21.12.12. The Bible and other such books called this time period as ‘the end of times’. We are physically living this ‘end of times’ NOW! For now, set aside the physics - and what all of this means, the real impact on us will be more on a planetary / energy level – which in turn equates down individually to each one of us.

The Mayan calendar ran for five equal segments of 5,125ish years each, unlike our rolling 12 months. We are not only at the end of one of these segments; we are at the end of the whole complete thing. We are at the end of the old cycle, but instead of snuffing out, we are heralding the start of the new one coming in, a new world view with new vibrations and potential of its own. Twenty twelve is the date given, 21.12.2012 to be more precise, and we have the technological backup and intelligence to realise... If you could draw a straight line through space, the Sun is passing directly in front of ‘the Pistol’. Earth, the Sun and the centre point of the Milky Way are aligned. Rather than all this happening over a one day time period, it actually began in the 1980’s and will be done by roughly 2016. Only at this present time, once every 25,625ish years due to its wobble, can Earth directly receive vital energy it needs to replenish, but even then - only up to its own capability to attract, store and receive in the first place. In the world of science, a positive can link to a positive to increase its size and output. A negative to a negative is the same. A positive and a negative when they meet together simply collide and cancel each other out. Every human alive is an energy conductor. Each one channel’s its life force – for the whole of its life - directly back to Earth as either a negative or a positive charge. We are the ones who decide the wellbeing of the planet by the overall input we feed back to life. We’re either an asset or a drain depending on our outlook, our actions, thoughts, deeds and intention. We will either help Earth receive what it needs to replenish – or we’ll block. The choice is as easy as that. Never before has free will been so important. On a personal level this equates to you being happy or sad, peaceful and open or stressed out and blocked. We are living a unique point in time where the vibration of life is greatly sped up – that’s why time ‘feels’ to be going so fast. Never before has it been so easy to let go of what we no longer need. Will you wake up and play your part? Will you help life to replenish itself – and therefore help us in the process? The choice rests solely with you...

Remember the good old days? There was a time when Rolace only provided services for companies providing alternatives to document storage, shredding and general office requirements but now the company situated at 4 Basset Court in Newport Pagnell provides more than just the above! They even cater for clutter in the home! By converting VHS tapes, Hi8/ Mini DV tapes and 35mm Slides to DVD or CD, they can bring your memories into the 21st century. With their new Nikon 4000dpi film scanner which scans both slides and negatives in superb definition, decades old slides can be enhanced and converted onto DVD or CD. Their specialist team scan all of your slides on site with

extreme care and attention. Rolace will clean, scan and then enhance your pictures to bring back their original vibrant colours, clean up old scratches and even remove mildew and stains! While VHS, Mini DV and Hi8 tapes can be converted to DVD’s, prolonging the life of cherished memories and inevitably avoiding the fear of losing them all together, as VHS is now an obsolete format. But why restore your VHS tapes? Well Carol Lancaster, director of Rolace Document Management quotes “VHS is an unreliable format, tapes can often break and perish over time and in some cases become irreparably damaged, due to damp and other elements, that’s why we take the utmost care when handling

and converting home videos and slides. Customer care is our most valued characteristic here at Rolace and we understand the importance of maintaining people’s memories and all for a reasonable price.” So if you have Weddings, Birthdays, Holidays or even just a school performance on video, get down to Rolace and receive 10% off orders until 31/08/12! Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.” Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.
