Positive living How much do you value yourself? No one can write anything that will help you, no words will touch the scars that you bear until you really love and value yourself. How many people have you helped – even if only fleetingly, by a random act of kindness freely given? How many people do you carry on your shoulders even now? How many times have you put others first – placing their needs high above your own – because you care? If someone called today, right now at this moment, you’d be gone in a flash, in an instant without second thought… How often do you ask that of others? How often do you put others out to help you? How often do you consider their time and effort? How often do they consider you? If you suddenly discovered that your time here was limited - how would you spend it? What would be most important? What would you finish? What would you change? What would you want your life to have been about? When we are stricken by pain and illness we lament the loss of health and ability, but when we are able, when life just rolls on – we dismiss – or see past the whole thriving structure of what we live for and why in the first place we chose to do it. We take things for granted. Time is not endless. It’s limited. A whole lifetime is over in just a short while and we can see this in action for ourselves as we take a look back down the years, through our life and the time that’s been spent here. What we did with the hours, days and weeks, how they were used was entirely up to us. But we don’t think about this usage at all; time is just taken for granted as we use it. We imagine it will always be there. We see it stretch before us far ahead like a seeming abyss without limit or care; and it does, because time itself will go on and on – but not us… We are limited. Just like sands draining through an egg timer - our own time will one day run out. Every day you wake up is a gift – not a chore. It’s a prize that ought to be valued. Not because you’ve been asked to do it, but because you realise its value. You chose to be here in this time frame. You went through immense pain to be born. You’ve struggled for years to get to this point – but now you are here, what does it mean to you personally? Are you happy? Are you living and reaping the full bounty of your efforts? Every day do you live or do you simply live to get by? Every person birthed physically for reasons that only they know, for reasons of soul and development, improvement... What is your purpose? What have you gained from all you’ve been through? Why do you do what you do? Have you ever stopped to think, to take stock or reassess? Have you ever stopped to check where you’re going? If you don’t value your own time and effort – why on Earth would anyone else? Each day has a beginning and a definite end. We don’t think about it often because we know that another will come around tomorrow and the next day and the day after that... Yet life is not endless. It’s just a time slot within the total expanse of time for whole of the planet. If your own time ran out – what would you take back as your prize? As

4 mkflyers central

your payback for having lived here right now? What have you learned? What have you achieved? What have you given freely or shared? Do you live a live script that you choose, program and write – or are you limited by what’s playing out? Do you feel trapped or supressed, over trodden or depressed? Are you struggling from one day to the next? Life does not intend that you struggle. Nothing is gained from your sadness and worry – but more of the same day in and day out, because life can only mirror back what first you’ve sent out through your thoughts, beliefs and requests. For things to change – you must change. You must begin to alter what you think, how you act and what you do automatically, without really thinking or knowing what you do – within the space of your own mind and life. Expectations of struggle, no matter how true they’ve been for you in the past, must be laid down and turned on their head – for life to click into a new gear, to be able to start helping you… Nature looks after its own and you too are part of nature, part of life, part of a living, thriving picture playing out in real time. You are powerful. You create. You take live thought and energy and make it physically manifest and work for you! Do you value your own capabilities? Do you value your effort and time? Do you live your life’s dream – or are you just treading water, with the hope that one day – even after your passing, that someone will see the real you? Do you wait to be rescued? Are you waiting for help? Do you crave understanding or more recognition for the hard work and pain you’ve been through? All these things and more are now over, they’re behind you and gone. There’s no need to drag further anything you don’t need. There’s no need to spoil the day that you’re in… All your dreams have been met. You passed goal posts you set long ago. So what do you want now? What do you need? How do you want life to change or play out? Every day is a gift. Your life is very valuable and time is the most precious thing you own! So once again – How much do you value yourself?

Until next month; Be safe, well and happy… Be all you search outwardly for…

10 tips for managing employee statutory holiday rights

H

ere we are again at a time when many employees are taking time to jet off to destinations far and wide. It’s important that employers understand that employees have certain statutory rights when it comes to taking annual holiday.

Here are out top ten tips to enable you to ensure that you understand your rights and responsibilities as an employer.

5. Holiday Accrual During Sickness Absence: An employee who is off sick will continue to accrue holiday during the period they are absent and may in this instance, carry forward their accrued holiday entitlement into the next year or be paid in lieu. 6. Holiday Accrual During Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave: Holiday continues to accrue throughout any period of maternity, paternity and adoption leave in exactly the same way as it accrues with long-term sickness absence. 7. Booking Holidays: Most companies have predefined rules about the booking of holidays and it is perfectly acceptable to limit the number of employees who can take time off at any one time to ensure that adequate cover for the business. Employers should make sure that the rules and clear and that all employees are fully aware of them.

1. Minimum Entitlement: The Working Time Regulations 1998 (WTR) provide that a full-time employee is entitled to 5.6 weeks (28 days) annual holiday in each leave year. This is a minimum of 20 days’ annual leave plus the UK right to an additional 8 days which represents the England and Wales bank holidays each year. However, it is not essential that the time be taken off on the days the bank holidays fall. A parttime worker will be entitled to a pro-rata proportion of the 28 days. So, for example, an employee working a fourday week will be entitled to 4/5 of 28 days, 22.4 days.

8. Holiday Refused and then the Employee is off Sick: If a request for holiday has been refused and then the employee takes the time off as sickness absence, then the Employer should carry out a thorough investigation and instigate disciplinary action if appropriate.

2. Accrual: Holiday starts to accrue from an employee’s first day of employment.

10. Non-return from Holiday: There are occasions when employees simply don’t return from their holiday. The employer should try to make contact with the employee by telephone, email and letter. If after at least three attempts to make contact have failed and the employee has not returned, then invite him to a disciplinary hearing for unauthorised absence having failed to return from holiday. It’s likely that he may not attend that meeting. If he doesn’t, then the employer should invite him to a further disciplinary hearing indicating that if he fails to attend on this occasion without good reason, then the hearing will take place in his absence.

3. Carrying Holiday Over: The WTR states that the minimum 20 days’ entitlement must be taken during the leave year to which it relates. If the leave is not taken, it is lost and cannot be carried forward to a subsequent year. The additional 8 days may be carried forward where there is a specific contractual agreement between employee and employer. If there is no contractual agreement, this will be treated in the same way as the 20 days above. Some employers offer more than the statutory minimum holiday entitlement in which case it is up to them to decide whether or not allow employees to carry forward the additional days into the next holiday year.

9. Employee Sick During Holiday: If an employee genuinely falls ill during their holiday, they should be permitted to take their annual holiday at another time. In that instance the Company would pay whatever they normally pay when an employee takes time off for sickness.

4. Holiday Entitlement on Termination: Holiday continues to accrue up to the termination date. If an employee has not used up all of their holiday entitlement by the termination date, they will be entitled to receive a payment in lieu. If an employer does not require an employee to work out their notice and pays them in lieu, holiday will accrue up to the last day of work – not to the end of the period when the notice would have terminated had the employee worked out their notice.

MP’s Diary £2.9m MK Hospital A&E Expansion Having campaigned to support and fund our hospital for over 10 years it has always been an emotive issue. Both Iain Stewart MP and I have been working behind the scenes to spearhead the campaign for investment in our hospital. After success earlier in the year when we received the 4th largest health budget settlement in the country, further good news came in July over our efforts to upgrade facilities at the Accident and Emergency Department. With one of the most physically constrained A&E facilities in the country, I’m delighted that Jeremy Hunt the Health Secretary has indicated that MK Hospital could be in line to receive an additional £2.9m funding to physically ers mkfly

expand our A&E. This would be used to increase the number of examination bays and staff to ensure we keep pace of our growing population. More importantly this extra funding for the A&E, will be a hugely significant vote of confidence in our hospital, especially at a time whilst we look at ways to work more closely with surrounding areas. For some time we have been calling for more resources to meet the increased demands from our growing population, with the Government responding positively to date, I look forward to seeing this investment secured and implemented as soon as possible. Whilst I appreciate with an election coming, political opponents will want to try and spread doom and gloom in any way they can, I am clear, that with investment like this, together with the news of the opening of the new medical school, our hospital has a bright future. Carnoisseur soap box Reviewed 15/07/14

This month we thought we would have a bit of fun with the review and look at our soapbox that we entered in the world famous Newport Pagnell soapbox race. With his slick yellow outfit Andy was ready to take to the road.

Our team was the yellow belly’s and apparently we came forth but I am not sure how as we lost more races than we won? We had a slight issue as a wheel fell off in the practise run that we did the Friday before the race so we had to draft in Roy pinks for emergency repairs and new wheels. Even that didn’t really help us as the wheel broke on the cart in the first race with help from Dave at Astons and his coat hanger we managed to get her back

on the road and finished another 4 races. It was a great morning out lots of fun and I would strongly recommend it next year and a big thank you to everybody that came out to support us.

W

ith summer having arrived, I’m looking forward to MK’s International Festival that promises to showcase the best of our great city. Make sure that you check out http://www.ifmiltonkeynes. org/home.html to make sure you don’t miss out. A topic that has caused recent concern is the future of services at Milton Keynes hospital. Fellow MP, Mark Lancaster and I have been dismayed by some of the comments that have been made. I can assure all residents that Mark and I are pushing for more investment, on top of the improved facilities that are expected later this year. The Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has also said that an extra £2.9 million will be available for the hospital this year. In Westminster, I recently I took part in a debate on legal highs. I have been contacted by a parent who knows of the disastrous effects that these substances can have on the lives of individuals and their families. There is an above average use of legal highs in Milton Keynes and I wanted to raise awareness of this fast developing problem. I will be

following up on specific aspects of the debate, support the police and the local community to see what can be done to combat this problem. Back home in MK, I had the pleasure of celebrating National Care Home Open Day in Eaglestone, visiting care homes that showed the good work undertaken by the majority of these residences. A new economic impact assessment of the proposed East West Rail line says that the western section of the scheme could boost the regional economy by over ÂŁ70 million per annum. This further supports a project that will make travel to Oxford and Aylesbury easier and further increase employment. Regional growth deals announced by the Government and SEMLEP will help to improve the future of Bletchley Station. Following its reopening by the Duchess of Cambridge, Bletchley Park is proving to be a local gem once again and Stadium: MK looks set for global coverage as it prepares to host the Rugby World Cup next year. Local councillors and I have lobbied hard for this funding and I am hopeful that this will be key to getting Bletchley moving forward.
