Summer Orientation and Registration
What goes on at SOAR? SIGN UP ONLINE SOON After we receive your registration to attend SOAR, you will get a confirmation packet within a few weeks. This will have details about your SOAR date, a campus map, payment policies and other important information. Our SOAR team will begin working on your fall course schedule as soon as we receive your SOAR registration. Schedules are completed based on the receipt of your SOAR registration, so the first person to register will be scheduled into classes first. Signing up online will speed up this process. It doesn’t matter which SOAR date you choose — just sign up early! Your schedule is constructed based on former students’ successful schedules, faculty recommendations, your major, any previous college credit, your interests and your academic profile. At SOAR, you can accept the entire schedule, or change part or all of it. THE SOAR LEADERS During SOAR you will be teamed up with a SOAR Leader and a small group of about 10-15 students who share similar interests. Your SOAR Leader will lead you through the day’s activities and help you become acquainted with Northwest.
SOAR Leaders are actual Northwest students. They have been on campus for at least two years and know the ins and outs of Northwest life.
However, if you do know what you want to major in, make sure to check that this information is correct on the confirmation card.
As a part of your SOAR group, you will also get to know other first-time students before moving on campus. You may even find a future roommate. This will help make your college transition even smoother.
If you have decided to switch majors from the time you sent in your application, make sure to let us know by calling or changing it when you register for SOAR, as this impacts your fall schedule.
MUSIC MAJORS AND MINORS
A freshman directory will be available through CatPAWS in the same place you registered for SOAR, starting May 1. This directory will include your name, hometown, high school, major and SOAR date, and later, your Northwest email. It is set up to help you connect with other Northwest students in your major or from your geographic region. This tool is only accessible by other new freshmen. To be included, you just need to check the box in your SOAR registration on CatPAWS.
If you’re considering a major or minor in music, you must attend the June 15 SOAR date in order to take the departmental placement exams. FAMILY
At the Student Services Fair, families can ask those last-minute questions about student life, student support and financial assistance.
If you haven’t decided on a major, that’s OK. In fact, some students will tell you that coming to college without a declared major is a positive experience. Some would even recommend an undeclared major if you aren’t absolutely certain about what you want to do.
There is no charge for you or your guests to attend SOAR. GET OFFICIAL You must submit all final transcripts to make your admission complete. For a transcript to be official, the school must send the transcript in a sealed envelope to Northwest’s Office of Admissions. Remember to also have an official transcript sent from any college from which you have completed any dual credit, AP or college credit. FINANCIAL AID
Parents should attend SOAR with you if possible. We have a day full of activities to help your family become familiar with Northwest personnel and the community. We give them an orientation to campus, answer questions and show them a little fun, too.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. List Northwest’s school code (002496) to give us access to your record for processing. If you plan to borrow money, don’t forget to complete the Master Promissory Note at dlenote.ed.gov and the Entrance Counseling Session at www.dlssonline.com.
