Who wants to be a model or artiste? The answer is "EVERYONE." It's true! They might not admit it, but deep down every one wants be a model. A career in modeling can be financially rewarding and can provide several opportunities for you to blossom as a performer. The key to success in the modeling industry is to be true to yourself. What is it about the way you look that makes you special? Do not make this decision based on what your mother, your girlfriend or your boyfriend tells you. They will tell you whatever, they think will make you feel good because they love you. But they usually don't know anything about the modeling business. This brings us to the next question. Why do you want to be a model? Is it fame and money or is it an opportunity to hang out with beautiful people? Whatever your reason is, you have to embrace it and use it as your driving force. To become a model your look has to be marketable. A corporation would have to believe that your face and/or body on their product will help them increase their sales. Can you the handle that pressure? Can you handle the constant rejection? If your answer is yes, then you are ready. Types of Modeling There are few different types of modeling: 1.Fashion 2. Commercial

4

Chennai Modelling Diary 2010

Fashion Fasion modeling is the use of a model to sell clothing. Fashion modeling includes runway, clothing campaigns (which you see in magazines and billboards), catalogue, and showroom presentations. Fashion agencies have strict requirements. Female models have to be between the ages of 1421 and to be 5'9" and above. Male models have to 18 years or older, 5'11" to 6'2" tall. It is very strict because, industry standard for clothing samples will usually only fit these sizes. Occasionally, an agency might accept models who fall short of these requirements because they have unusually beautiful faces and/or bodies. The further you are from these requirements makes the more difficult it is for your agency to acquire work for you.

Commercial Commercial modeling is the use of a model to sell products for household or industrial use. These include cars, hair products, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, household appliances, industrial appliances, machinery etc. Commercial agencies have no physical restrictions. Commercial modeling includes TV, print, promotions (and more. Commercial agencies represent models of all ages, sizes and ethnic backgrounds. Dealing with the difficulties associated with modeling will often lead many models to give up before they've really given modeling a chance. If it was truly that easy to make a living at modeling, then everyone would do it. As with any career, the rewards of success can be great, but you generally have to earn them. There are unlimited opportunities available to every different type of look, age, race, height weight. And I always repeat “Before you discover, you must explore.

"A career in modeling can be financially rewarding and can provide several opportunities for you to blossom as a performer."

Modeling Starts From Audition Auditions are the best place to start your modeling careers as they had proven to be the stepping stones for many successful models in the past. Aspiring models should constantly fight their way towards success by attending a number of auditions before getting a modeling gig. Modeling industry is one of the most competitive places in the world and you must really work hard to attain glory. Modeling is not merely about glamour; its a big business where glamour and talents should go hand in hand. Your good looks alone cant make it to the ramp; you must polish your talents as well. When you are trying to establish yourself as a model, there would be a number of things that you must keep in mind. Patience is the key word for everyone who intends to set their foot on modeling industry. Every aspiring model has to go through a number of auditions and unless they have patience to get through the auditions, they will not succeed. You have to stay positive through the auditions and should keep the fact in mind that the more auditions you give the more chances to get a modeling gig. The basic thing in modeling is that you must evaluate yourself clearly before setting up a career. This means that you should have a clear idea about your body and talents. The auditions you give should also be based in these factors. If you are a little heavy, then you must attend auditions for plus-size models. Meanwhile, if you are fairly tall, then runway modeling would be suited for you. The best way to prepare for runway modeling is to observe professional models in action on the ramp. You must practice your walk after keenly observing the models on how they walk, how their eyes are focused and how they keep their stature. Preparing a professional portfolio and gaining some basic instructions is important if you are considering modeling as a full-time career. Self-confidence should be your word on the day of audition. Nothing can boost up our energy levels than a radiating self confidence. Being a model, your main talent lies in presenting your attitude in the most appealing way possible. Your confidence should beam through your way of carrying yourself. However, be careful not to keep an air of it. This may be judged as over confidence during the auditions. Your body language plays a significant part during modeling auditions. It is always good to maintain eye contact with the judging panel. And also you must keep a pleasant smile throughout the auditions. Nonetheless, confidence cannot be built over night. It takes many years of experience to gain excellent confidence. But as an aspiring model, the best thing for you is to polish your skills by attending as many auditions as possible and get the modeling gig of your dreams.

Improve Your Posture Good posture can improve your health and carriage, not to mention your overall appearance. To maintain and improve your posture, pay attention to your position when sitting and standing, and even while lying down-here's how to get started. If you are a professional model, a photographer will most likely guide you through a variety of model poses throughout the shoot, but if you are an aspiring model and are still working your way up to the top you will have to follow the steps below. STE PS Know what good posture is. Most people think that to "stand up straight" means tensing your back to heave your chest 'in and up', and pulling your head back in to your chest. This is not so. The spine has two natural curves that you need to maintain called the 'double C' or 'S' curves, these are the curves found from the base of your head to

28

your shoulders and the curve from the upper back to the base of the spine. When standing straight up, make sure that your weight is evenly distributed on your feet. You might feel like you are leaning forward, and look stupid, but you don't. Using a mirror, align your ears, shoulders, and hips. Proper alignment places your ears loosely above your shoulders, above your hips. Again, these points make a straight line, but the spine itself curves in a slight 'S'. You'll find that this doesn't hurt at all. If you do experience pain, look at your side view in a mirror to see if you're forcing your back into an unnatural position. If so, stop it! Do exerises that strengthen the muscles across your upper back and shoulders. These do not have to be strenuous! Try the following, with or without hand weights: •Align your ears over your shoulders.

Chennai Modelling Diary 2010

Raise both arms straight up, alongside your ears. Remember to keep your ears aligned! Bend forearms toward shoulders to touch your shoulder blades. Do 10 repetitions with both arms, then alternate 10 reps for each arm singularly. •Align ears with shoulders. Raise both arms out to sides at shoulder height. Hold for a slow count of ten. Slowly lower arms to sides, counting ten as you lower. Slowly raise arms back to shoulder height, counting to ten as you raise arms. Do ten reps, constantly checking your alignment! If ten reps are too many to start, do as many as you can. You should at least feel a slight fatigue in the shoulder muscles. •Be a penguin. While you wait for a web page to load, toast to pop, or the microwave to beep, place elbows at your side, and touch your shoulders with your hands. Keeping your hands on your shoulders and your ears aligned, raise both elbows (count one, two) and lower them back to your waist (count one, two). Do as many reps as your wait a l l o w s . Yo u ' l l b e surprised how much exercise fits into 30

29

seconds. Do stretches. This can greatly help if you find that you have a sore back or neck after a while. • Tilt (stretch) your head in all four directions over your shoulders (forward, back, left, right), and gently massage your neck. Avoid rolling in a circle, as it may cause further strain. • On your hands and knees, curl your back upwards, like a cat, and then the opposite. Think about being able to place a bowl in the hollow of your back. Repeat the exercises a few times each day. Doing them in the morning helps your body stretch out the muscle lethargy of sleep, and periodically throughout the day helps raise your energy level without a heavy workout. Take ballet classes. You can take ones from a performing arts school in this instance; they are simply recreational.

"Do yoga. Yoga is also excellen t for posture. You can take a class or find a good

Chennai Modelling Diary 2010

with the rest of the body. Do yoga. Yoga is also excellent for posture. You can take a class or find a good workout video.

SITTING Sit in an office chair. Align your back with the back of the office chair. Avoid slouching or leaning forward, especially when tired from sitting in the office chair for long periods. Keep your shoulders straight. Flex your arms at a 75- to 90-degree angle at the elbows. You may have to adjust the office chair. Make sure your neck, back, and heels are all aligned. Keep both feet flat on the floor. If there's a problem with feet reaching the floor comfortably, a footrest can be used along with the office chair.

STANDING Stand with weight mostly on the balls of the feet, not with weight on the heels. Avoid locking your knees. Keep feet slightly apart, about shoulder-width. Let arms hang naturally down the sides of the body. Tuck the chin in a little to keep the head level. Be sure the head is square on top of the neck and spine, not pushed out forward Stand straight and tall, with shoulders upright. Stand against a wall with shoulders and bottom touching wall. In this position, the back of the head should also touch the wall - if it does not, the head is carried too far forward (anterior head carriage). 1 Keep the head up and eyes looking straight ahead. Avoid pushing your head forward.

DRIVING Sit with the back firmly against the seat for proper back support. The seat should be a proper distance from the pedals and steering wheel to avoid leaning forward or reaching. The headrest should support the middle of the head to keep it upright. Tilt the headrest forward if possible to make sure that the head-to-headrest distance is not more than four inches.

CARRYING OBJECTS Always bend at the knees, not the waist. Use the large l e g a n d s t o m a c h muscles for lifting, not the lower back. If necessary, get a supportive belt to

WALKING Keep shoulders properly aligned

30

Chennai Modelling Diary 2010

help maintain good posture while lifting. Keep large or heavy objects close to the chest when carrying them. Switch arms frequently if you are carrying something with only one arm. Keep backpacks and purses as light as possible, and balance the weight on both sides as much as possible, or alternate from side to side. When carrying a backpack, avoid leaning forward or rounding the shoulders. If the weight feels like too much, consider using a rolling backpack with wheels.

Stand with weight mostly on the balls of the feet, not with

SLEEPING Use a firm mattress for proper back support, but remember that individual preference is very important. Try to sleep on your back. Sleeping on the side will damage your posture after enough repetitions. Sleeping on your back will help straighten your shoulders, and it is usually more comfortable for the back than sleeping on the stomach. Use a pillow to provide proper support and alignment for the head and shoulders. Consider putting a rolled-up towel under the neck and a pillow under the knees to better support the spine. If sleeping on the side, a relatively flat pillow placed between the legs will help keep the spine aligned and straight.

TIPS Always imagine that a string coming from the top of your head is pulling you gently up towards the ceiling. Visualization techniques like these are helpful. •Don't slouch when you walk. Be sure to try to walk as if you had a book balancing on your head. •Be patient with yourself. Correcting poor posture can take a long time, especially if you've had bad posture for years. •You can have someone tape a giant X on your back from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Then put a straight line of tape across your shoulders closing the top of the X. Wear this during the day, to help retrain your back. This works really well if you hold shoulders

31

Chennai Modelling Diary 2010

back before taping, use wide non stretch tape and ideally change tape each day. •Don't tighten up your muscles when you are assuming a straight posture. It will only stress the joints and muscles themselves and this affects the skeleton, therefore your posture and even the way you move and breathe. Try to eventually relax into it but if you experience back pains, stop it! Yo u a r e p r o b a b l y c a u s i n g unnecessary muscle tension. It is important to differentiate between back pains, and muscle exhaustion. Since the correct posture is foreign, the muscles needed to maintain that posture might not be strong enough yet. A guideline for this is that if it strains you to breath, realign your posture. Let the breath guide you, it needs to feel good! It can take weeks to strengthen the muscle imbalances

"Don't slouch when you walk. Be sure to try to walk as if you had a and this is very tough work, but worth it in the end. •If your head is hanging, you can't be properly aligned. Keep your head at the level that allows you to look directly ahead without having to turn your eyes up. If you cannot do this without feeling tension in your neck, this means you are causing unnecessary muscle tension. •A great side benefit of keeping your

32

head straight, and your ears/shoulders/hips aligned is an improvement in your self-esteem and attitude. If you walk with your head up, you appear more confident, and feel more confident, which improves your attitude and mood, making it easier to walk with your head up. •Try these steps to get in alignment: push your shoulders forward, then bring them straight up, then bring them straight back, then bring them straight down. Feel good? If your shoulders feel slightly stiff or tense you may have unnecessary muscle tension. •If you need help remembering to keep your posture, think of a unique object or color. Every time you think of that object, check your posture. •Try focusing on your calves. Let your posture and balance rely more on your calves. Try to feel an at ease attitude, and put a bounce in your step. You'll find that it will free up the rest of your upper body to relax and assume a more upright posture that takes pressure from your back, shoulders and neck, and works on your ab muscles. This is awesome, since strong calves and abs rock! •Consider wearing a special shirt designed to aid posture; such a shirt is a training aid that strengthens your back muscles and makes your shoulders work to maintain proper posture throughout the day. •Some people are born with one of two embryological foot structures (Rothbarts Foot or the Preclinical Clubfoot Deformity) that results in bad posture. This can be corrected using an innovative, non-surgical, non-drug intervention referred to as Rothbarts Proprioceptive Therapy.

Warnings •Do not keep doing exercises if you feel pain, clicking joints, pulled muscles or more than a slight fatigue!

Chennai Modelling Diary 2010

This will not get you there faster. Instead it will frustrate you and make you less likely to continue the exercises, as well as cause serious injury. If you can only do 3 reps, do 3 reps when you get up, and 3 after breakfast, and three just before you leave the house. Tomorrow or the next day, you'll be able to do 4. Then 7, then 10. •Anyone with current or previous back, neck, knee or pelvic injuries should not attempt to correct their posture themselves. This could further damage the body. Contact your doctor or other movement education professional before trying to tamper with your alignment. •There are many points concerning the proprioceptive sense that are difficult to describe in words and even more difficult to understand and translate into motion. If exercises on this page do not have the result of easier movement, including an increased range of motion that you can immediately sense, stop and seek professional help from properly trained practitioners and teachers to

33

Shoot

Although we provide as much instruction & direction as desired during a shoot, it is a significant help if the person being photographed has an understanding of what their body looks like in different positions and to also understand how their face feels when they're making different expressions. we recommend that all first-time

models, and anyone relatively new to modeling, practice posing and making different facial expressions in front of a mirror. It may feel silly to practice such things in front of a mirror, but it is a great way to prepare for what it will be like in front of a camera and should actually make doing your shoot easier and more comfortable. Although interpretations of different expressions & looks may vary, please practice a variety of different looks so that you are at least somewhat prepared should you be asked for a specific expression, such as: "sexy", "intense", "serious", and "pouty". Again, we will provide as much direction as necessary to get the look & expression desired, but the more prepared you are, the better. If you have a tendency to show a lot of your gumline while smiling, you should also practice smiling without showing as much of your gums. Don't worry, we'll get plenty of photos with your beautiful & natural smile, but the tendency in professional photography is to limit exposure of the gumline. and magazines. Study them. Pay close attention to the position of hands, the different angles the body makes (including the tilt of the head, arms, torso, thighs, and legs), and facial expressions.

Aesthetic & Cosmetic Preparation Be sure to take care of all hair removal prior to a shoot, but leave at least 2-3 days between when you wax/shave any sensitive areas (such as your bikini line) and your shoot date. This time is necessary to allow for any irritation to disappear before your shoot. Take care of your nails. Be sure that your nails are neat and well maintained. Short nails are preferred. A natural, non-colored, or French manicure look is preferable. If you plan on posing barefoot, be sure your feet and toes are in good condition. If you plan on showing your smile, be sure that your teeth are ready for prime-time. If your teeth are discolored, you may want to consider having them cleaned/whitened.
