HARLEM TOWER UF DESIGN 7 | CRITIC DONNA COHEN | CONTEXT HARLEM, NY | PARTNER FHENNY GRACIA

THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN THE VERY NORTH END OF HARLEM, NEW YORK, NEXT TO JACKIE ROBISON PARK. THE TOWER SITS AT A POINT IN HARLEM THAT WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE RIDING SEA LEVEL. HARLEM IS A DIVERSE MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY THAT IS VERY RICH IN HISTORY. WE WANTED TO ESTABLISH A NEW COMMUNITY THAT MAINTAINS THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE UP THIS COMMUNITY. THE TOWER WILL KEEP THE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT PROGRAMS RELATIVELY THE SAME. THE TOWER IS ORGANIZED THROUGH A SERIES OF FOUR ABSTRACTED SLABS ROTATING AROUND AND IN BETWEEN TWO CORES. ONE OF THE CORES CONNECTS TO ALL THE RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS AND ALSO TO THE LEVELS THAT CONNECT THE TWO CORES.

THE CORE IN THE RIGHT CONNECTS ALL THE PROGRAMS EXCEPT THE RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS. THE ENTRY POINT OF THE TOWER IS AN INDOOR GREEN SPACE THAT SERVES AS A THRESHOLD FROM THE CHRONIC STREETS TO A CALMER SPACE. THE TOWER IS A TOWER OF OUR CURRENT TIME; A TOWER THAT STANDS AS TWO SYMBOLS OF PEACE AND TRANQUILITY. THE INSIDE IS PAINTED WITH BRILLIANT COLORS, SYMBOLIZING THE DIVERSE GROUPS OF PEOPLE THAT CALL IT HOME.

URBAN EDGE UF DESIGN 6 | CRITIC LISA HUANG | CONTEXT SAVANNAH, GA

THE ORIGIN OF THIS PROJECT IS IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. THE TWO DIFFERENT FACADES CREATE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EACH SIDE. THE ORGANIC EDGE IS REFLECTED BY THE WATER AND THE CONSTRUCTED EDGE IS REFLECTED BY THE GRID OF THE CITY. THE BUILDING CONTAINS A VERTICAL FORM THAT IS USED AS A THRESHOLD AND IT IS ALSO THE MAIN CIRCULATION. INSIDE THE VERTICAL FORM, THERE IS THE CULINARY SCHOOL. THE VERTICAL FORM PROVIDES FOOD TO THE SCHOOL AND MARKET. THE VERTICAL GARDEN CONNECTS ALSO TO THE RESTAURANT AND THE PUBLIC SPACE. THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THE BUILDING LEADING STUDENTS TO A PRIVATE SPACE. IT WOULD BE COVERED WITH AN OPAQUE GLASS, GIVING THEM MORE PRIVACY. THE RESTAURANT THAT IS BELOW THE SCHOOL WOULD BE FACING THE WATER CONSTRUCTED WITH GLASS TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A VIEW TO THE CLIENTS WHILE THEY VISIT. THE MARKET IS AN UNDERGROUND SPACE; PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS ENORMOUS HANGING GARDEN BEFORE ENTERING THE MARKET AREA. THE IDEA OF HAVING THE HANGING GARDEN IS FOR PEOPLE TO FEEL LIKE THEY ARE IN A DIFFERENT SPACE, DISCONNECTED FROM THE CITY.

MAP ANALYSIS

THE PURPOSE OF HAVING THE SHIFT IS TO BE ABLE TO SHOW HOW SAVANNAH HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS. ON ONE SIDE OF THE FAÇADE, A PART OF IT IS COVERED IN ORDER TO SHOW THE PEOPLE SOME PARTS OF THE BUILDING AND MAKE THEM WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE BUILDING AND WHAT IT HAS TO OFFER.

HISTORICAL MUSEUM UF DESIGN 5 | CRITIC STEPHEN BELTON | CONTEXT NORTH FLORIDA

THE PROJECT SITS IN THE NORTH OF FLORIDA. THE PROJECT IS AN INTERSECTION FOR PEOPLE AND TO THE PEOPLE. IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO A HISTORICAL MUSEUM AND LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE CITY. THE PROJECT CONTAINS A GALLERY, OFFICES, RESTAURANTS, AND A DOCK. THE ENTRANCE OF THE INTERSECTION IS OPEN TO THE VISITORS. TO THE LEFT, WE HAVE THE GALLERY WHICH IS LOCATED NEXT TO THE WATER IN ORDER TO HAVE LIGHT REFLECTING THE GALLERY AND HAVE LIGHT GO THROUGH THE ARTWORK. ON TOP OF THE GALLERY AND THE ENTRANCE, WE HAVE OFFICES. THE OFFICES WERE DESIGNED ON TOP OF THE INTERSECTION TO BE ABLE TO HAVE PRIVACY FROM THE PEOPLE IN THE GALLERY. AT THE END OF THE INTERSECTION, WE HAVE A RESTAURANT THAT WOULD PROVIDE TO THE CLIENTS A VIEW FROM THE WATER. THEY WOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO SEE THE SUNSET IN THE AFTERNOONS. UNDER THE RESTAURANT, WE HAVE THE DOCK. THE DOCK WAS DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO GO CANOEING OR ENGAGE IN OTHER WATER ACTIVITIES. IT WAS ALSO CREATED AS ANOTHER ENTRANCE TO THE INTERSECTION, PEOPLE CAN COME FROM THE WATER INTO THE INTERSECTION AND ENJOY THE ACTIVITIES PROVIDED.

SPACE FOR ONE MD DESIGN 4 | CRITIC MARIO F ORTEGA | CONTEXT MIAMI, FL

THIS PROJECT IS LOCATED IN MIAMI, FLORIDA. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CREATE A MODULAR ENVIRONMENT BY PICKING AN EXISTING BUILDING IN FLORIDA AND ATTACHING IT TO THE EXISTING BUILDING. THE SPACE FOR ONE WAS MAINLY FOCUSED ON THE VARIATION OF SPACES AND THE MAXIMIZATION OF EXTERIOR VIEWS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONSTRUCT WAS MADE OUT OF CONCRETE. THE CARVING OF THIS PROJECT WAS MADE TO CREATE HABITABLE SPACES FOR ONE.

CHARLESTONE,SC

PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOOL UF DESIGN 6 | CRITIC LISA HUANG | CONTEXT CHARLESTON, SC

THE PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOOL IS LOCATED IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA. THIS PROJECT WAS INSPIRED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE OLD SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHY. THE PROCESS THAT A PHOTOGRAPH GOES THROUGH WAS THE MAIN FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT. IN PHOTOGRAPHY, YOU GO FROM TAKING A PICTURE TO DEVELOPING IT AND LASTLY, TO DISPLAYING IT. WHEN DEVELOPING A PHOTOGRAPH, YOU GO THROUGH A LONG PROCESS, BUT YOU MAINLY GO THROUGH THREE CHEMICALS: THE DEVELOPER, STOP BATH, AND FIXER. THESE THREE MAIN CHEMICALS ALSO RELATE TO THE THREE MAIN STREETS THAT GO THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MAP OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA. THE SPACES IN THE PROJECT THAT ARE ALSO RELATED TO THE THREE CHEMICALS ARE THE GALLERY, THE STUDIOS, AND THE DARK ROOM. FRAMING IS ALSO SOMETHING THAT IS INCORPORATED IN THIS PROJECT, WHICH ALSO LEADS TO PHOTOGRAPHY. A PICTURE IS ALL ABOUT FRAMING.

BROOKLYN, NY

IMPARTIAL MANIFESTATION UF DESIGN 7 | CRITIC DONNA COHEN | CONTEXT BROOKLYN, NY | PARTNER FHENNY GRACIA

THE PROJECT SITS IN WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK. OUR BUILDING IS A MULTIPURPOSE FACILITY BUILDING THAT WOULD INCLUDE COMMERCIAL SPACES, RESIDENTIAL SPACES, A BREWERY, AND A MAKER SCHOOL. WITH THE COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT WE HAVE FROM THE CONTEXT, OUR GOAL WAS TO DESIGN A PROJECT THAT WOULD CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF THE CITY BY THE INTEGRATION AND EVOLUTION, INCORPORATING THE HISTORY OF WILLIAMSBURG, ITS COMMUNITY, ITS CONTEXT, AND MANHATTANS CULTURE ALREADY PRESENTED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE PROJECT IS BROKEN UP IN FOUR DIFFERENT PARTS. WHEN MY PARTNER AND I WERE DECIDING THE COMMERCIAL SPACE, WE DECIDED TO KEEP SOME PARTS OF THE FACTORY AS A FOUNDATION FOR THE FULL BLOCK BUILDING. WE WANTED TO BRING PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY INTO OUR BUILDING AND ACTIVATE THE SPACE BY ADDING A MUSEUM THAT WOULD SHOW THE HISTORY OF WILLIAMSBURG, A COMMERCIAL AREA AS WELL AS A TRANSPORTATION HUB. WE TOOK A LOOK AT THE CONTEXT IN A LARGER PERSPECTIVE AND NOTICED THAT THE NEW PROPOSAL FOR THE MAKER PARK THAT IS ON THE LEFT OF THE SITE WAS BEING DEVELOPED. THE MAKER PARK IS TRYING TO KEEP SOME OF THE INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION TO BUILD THE PARK. TO THE RIGHT OF THE SITE, WE HAVE MCCARREN PARK THAT OFFERS A LOT OF RECREATION FEATURES LIKE SOCCER, BASKETBALL, TENNIS, ETC.

WHEN WE WERE LOOKING AT THE PARKS, WE NOTICED THAT THE PARKS ARE NOT ONLY GREEN SPACES BUT ALSO SPACES OF GATHERING. WE WANT TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER IN OUR BUILDING. THE PROJECT WOULD WORK AS A LINK BETWEEN THE TWO PARKS WHERE PEOPLE WOULD COME AND ENJOY. PERHAPS IN THE FUTURE, OUR BUILDING WOULD WORK AS A LINK BETWEEN THESE TWO PARKS. OUR COMMERCIAL AREA HAS A LOT OF LOCAL STORES AND STORES CREATED BY THE STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL. OUR SPACE OF PAUSE (THE PARK) THAT IS ABOVE THE COMMERCIAL AREA IN OUR FULL BLOCK, IS AN UNINTERRUPTED SPACE BETWEEN THE FACTORY AND OUR RESIDENTIAL SPACE THAT WOULD WORK AS A BUFFER BETWEEN THE FACTORY. THE PARK IS A PRIVATE SPACE ONLY FOR RESIDENTS. THEY COULD WALK, RELAX, AND MEDITATE. IN OUR HALF BLOCK BUILDING, WE HAVE THE MAKER SCHOOL, THE BREWERY, THE STORES MADE FOR THE STUDENTS AND THEIR NECESSITIES, AND THE RESIDENTIAL AREA FOR STUDENTS. FOR THIS PROJECT, WE WANTED TO PLAY WITH DIFFERENT KINDS OF MATERIALS BY INCLUDING PERFORATED CURTAIN STEEL, BRICKS FROM THE OLD FACTORY, GLASS, AND EXPOSED STRUCTURE.
