Jackson directs classics (review) Camilo Junoy The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong, and District 9 are just a few of the many successful and memorable movies with which Peter Jackson has been involved. Jackson was born an only child in a small town in New Zealand on October 31, 1961. Jackson began his early obsession with films when a family friend gave him a super eight millimeter camera and he started making short films with his friends. As a child, Jackson’s favorite movie was King Kong. He loved the movie so much that when he was only nine years old, he tried to make his own version of the film. Even as a child, Jackson’s attention to special effects in his movies was prominent. At the age of 16, Jackson dropped out of school and became a photoengraver for a local newspaper. After purchasing a sixteen millimeter camera, Jackson set out to make his first film, Bad Taste. The film originally started

out as just a small project to get Jackson familiar with his camera, but over the course of four years, the small project turned into a full length feature film. Bad Taste premiered in May of 1987 at the Cannes Film Festival. Arguably the biggest success of Peter Jackson was the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson won rights to the film in 1997 and began working with Miramax on a two-film production. After being pressured to turn the two films into a single film, Jackson made a last-minute deal with New Line Cinema. Thus, the sequel became a trilogy. Much of the films were shot in New Zealand. All three of the movies made a total revenue of a whopping, $2,915,155,189. All three movies were nominated for 30 Academy Awards and won 17. Peter Jackson was later approached by Universal Studios to film a remake of the 1933 classic King Kong. King Kong

was the very film that inspired Jackson to begin filmmaking so Jackson enthusiastically agreed. The film set a record for having the highest budget ever at $207 million. The film was released on December 14, 2005 and made a total of $550 million making it the fourth highest grossing movie in Universal Pictures history. One of the most recent movies Jackson has produced is District 9, a film with an unconventional take on aliens. The film grossed a total of $204,570,836. Jackson’s newest film, The Lovely Bones had a limited release on December 11, 2009. What started out as a small obsession with movies turned Peter Jackson into one of this generation’s most successful directors and producers.

Like every other game console everyone has, there are pros and cons. Some people demand this and that on one console, while others could care less. So which is the true video game console? Having Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3 and playing the number one hit game can be overwhelming. But what about playing it online with friends from school or co-workers? The Xbox 360 has Xbox Live where players get together and play online. But there is a catch.. Xbox Live subscriptions cost about $50 per year, $18.99 for three months, or $7.99 for a month. The Playstation 3 online costs nothing and it has built-in wi-fi where you can connect online wirelessly, while the Xbox 360 uses an ethernet plug. Users can buy a separate adapter for the Xbox 360 and connect wirelessly which cost about $100.

However, having free online gaming does not mean players get the same games the Xbox 360 has to offer. Most developers are developing games on the Xbox 360 and porting it to the Playstation 3. There are exclusive games only for the Xbox 360, but the Playstation 3 has them as well. This is where it separate users from which console to pick. “I think that the Xbox 360 is better than the Playstation 3”, said sophomore, Brandon Nervarez. The two consoles can be used as a home theater. The Xbox 360 supporting standard DVD quality while the Playstation 3 has built Blu-Ray player. A Blu-Ray player is a DVD player where users can watch movies in full definitions of 1080p/1080i/720p. “Even tho the Playstation 3 has a built in Blu-Ray player, they don’t have enough games for the Playstation 3,” said sophomore, Edward Mcfarland.

‘360’ battles PS3 by William Cun

Video games have been around well over 40 years since the time where kids played ping pong or tennis on their TV monitor. Changes over the past couple of years, have revolutionized what some kids are playing today. But what makes the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3(PS3) so far-fetched from other competitors? Xbox 360 and The Playstation 3 are today’s top selling video game consoles on the market. Xbox 360 is owned by the major company who brought the Microsoft Windows operating system to computer owners, Microsoft. The Playstation 3 is owned by the Japanese company, Sony. The Xbox 360 was released November 22, 2005 and the Playstation 3 was released about a year after the Xbox 360, on November 17, 2006.

Switzerland visits L.A. byDaniel Huggenberger On November 28, I arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport. After my flight from Miami. When I came out of the airplane I was shocked, it was so cold. About 60 Degrees. I got my luggage and met my friends from Europe. It was so much fun to speak swiss german again. I missed it alot. I was so tired from my flight so I fell asleep and woke up the next day. Our day was planned with a trip to Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Venice Beach is very famous. It is showd in many movies. I think it is like a human zoo. Anything you can imagine is in Venice Beach from rich to poor as well from snakes to dogs. Many of the people and stores looked strange and unwelcoming. But it was fun. Afterwards, we went to the Santa Monica Pier. There we saw Kate Hudson and her boyfriend. The weather was gorgeous but for me way too cold. After we experienced Santa Monica, we drove to the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills is filled with nice cars, labels and plastic surgeons, that is Beverly Hills. I liked it a lot, because it was very clean and perfect

Hills. I liked it a lot, because it was very clean and perfect. The Christmas decorations were already up and it looked

very good. The next day we were tired of sightseeing so we thought that we could go to rollercoaster park. It was a lot of fun, although we sort of wasted our time this day. On Tuesday, we finally visited the famous Hollywood.

We walked the walk of fame. Everyone who has a name in show business has a star. It was nice for shopping; they actually had some Europeans stores like H & M and Zara. This made my day. Some stars from the Disney channel were wondering around too. And of course we took a lot of pictures in front of the huge Hollywood sign. I was a little bit disappointed because I thought Hollywood would be more glamourous than it was. It was only about one street and really small; it looks way bigger on television. Wednesday was our last day. We visited the Universal Studios in the Hollywood Hills. We took a tour around the different movie sets from the Grinch, Desperate Housewives, King Kong, Fast and the Furious and more. They were filming on the Desperate Housewives set, but we did not see the actresses. On Thursday, I flew back to Miami. It was about 90 degrees. I was so happy, hot again. Los Angeles is very nice, there are a lot of very nice places, but without a car you cannot go anywhere. So plan your trip, it will be fun! page design by Olivia Douglas
