Collection 2013/14

Aside from our wonderful new stock, perhaps the most exciting news is the complete refit of our One Gold Street showroom. In this ever-changing world with the internet in everyone’s pocket, we feel that it is more important than ever to offer an unparalleled service in all our showrooms that just can’t be replicated by online shopping. We have been embracing internet shopping and aim to give you the very best service through our online shop as you would expect, but for those who still want that personal contact and a warm handshake, our showrooms are the only place to shop.

Now with the new-look showrooms at One Gold Street we feel we can continue to offer the very best service but in a fresh, luxurious environment. At the time of printing this, the builders are putting their final touches to the showrooms ready for the grand opening in October and after seven weeks of upheaval, dust, drills and ladders we will be eagerly waiting to introduce you to our new shop. As you walk in you may notice that the door has been brought forward to create extra window space. All the windows have been changed and the window lights raised up to make the shop much brighter. Along with this, we have redecorated the shop floor with new cabinets and carpets whilst still keeping the showrooms’ classic charm. The busy service department has moved up onto the ground floor where our knowledgeable staff will be delighted to assist you with your queries, repairs and alterations in the comfort of the main showroom. Downstairs, where the service department used to be, you will see our new “silver vault”. In here we will be showcasing Mont Blanc pens and leather goods, new and antique silverware, and christening gifts beautifully displayed for you to browse in your own time.

Perhaps the biggest change is upstairs, where our silver gallery has now been turned into a premium watch gallery – the only one of its kind in the county. We have created a unique space for all our watch brands to be displayed fully in their own areas, with a bespoke area for Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, Tag Heuer and Omega. This gallery has wonderful views across to the Guildhall and All Saints church where you can browse for your next timepiece at leisure, from some of the best Swiss watch brands available. We are very excited about our new-look showrooms and together with our Grosvenor Centre and Banbury showrooms we believe that we can offer the best products, services and experience for miles around. We invite you to come into Northampton to view our improvements where a warm welcome will await you. I hope that you enjoy our latest bookalogue and would like to thank you for your loyalty to Michael Jones Jeweller in the past, during the changes and continued support for the future. Our staff are always genuinely delighted to share your Michael Jones Jeweller shopping experience with you whether it is online or in store and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

HOW THINGS

B

TIMES ARE ALWAYS CHANGING AND AS

In 1970, as well as the new Chronicle and Echo building, there was a great deal of development in Northampton. The M1 had opened south west of the town in 1959 and in conjunction with the good rail links to the town, Northampton was popular for commuters to London. To cope with the increased population, the eastern district was just being built; the Grosvenor centre was being planned as was Greyfriars bus station and Weston Favell shopping centre. Northampton even had its own power station until 1975.

change

OUR GOLD STREET SHOWROOM IS BEING RE-FITTED AS WE GO TO PRINT, WE THOUGHT THAT WE WOULD LOOK BACK TO WHEN WE FIRST MOVED FROM THE MOUNTS, 43 YEARS AGO, TO GOLD STREET AND SEE HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED…

efore our move to Gold Street, Michael Jones Jeweller was based in the Mounts, with a town centre shop at 4 Bridge Street. Late in 1969 notice was given of a compulsory purchase order on the Mounts premises to make way for the development of the Chronicle and Echo building. Luckily, at the same time, Palmers Tailors at number 1 Bridge Street came up for sale and was the perfect solution. After agreeing with the Post Office to change the address from 1 Bridge Street to be called One Gold Street, we arrived.

In the wider world other important notable events happened in 1970 including the world’s first jumbo jet landing in Britain and The Beatles split after 10 years. British Leyland announced that the Morris Minor would be discontinued, Northampton Town played Manchester United and lost 8-0, and the halfcrown and the 10 shilling note ceased to be legal tender. YELLOW GOLD WAS THE MOST POPULAR METAL, FAR OUTSELLING WHITE GOLD OR PLATINUM AND HALLMARKS WERE NOT COMPULSORY UNTIL 1975.

On the subject of money, one of the most striking changes since the 1970s is the economy. The average weekly wage was just £32.00 compared to £442.00 today but the cost of living was substantially less; a loaf of bread would cost you just 9p (now £1.35), the average property price was £4,975 (now £238,976). As a music lover you may have been one of the 1500 who attended the very first Glastonbury festival in 1970. Acts included: The Kinks, Marc Bolan, Keith Christmas, Stackridge, Al Stewart and Quintessence and would have set you back just £1.00. To go to Glastonbury now would cost you over £200 a ticket and you would be sharing the field with 118,000 other festival goers. A romantic trip to the cinema for two was just 90p whereas today it would set you back £12.74. Films you might have seen were The Railway Children or Carry on up the Jungle and finishing off your date with a trip to the pub would have set you back just 20p for a pint of lager or £1.00 for a bottle of wine. You may even have dropped your companion home in your brand new £1998.00 Land Rover! Michael Jones Jeweller has a loyal staff and we still have a number of people working with us who remember what the shop was like when we first moved into Gold Street. Of course we still have Michael Jones who, although is no longer working, is more than happy to reminisce with us about times past. 28

Collection 2013/14

Back in 1970 the shop was doing well in its new location. Moving next door to the Bridge Street shop, which at the time was a dedicated Omega showroom allowed the workshops which were located in the upper rooms of 4 Bridge Street to easily serve the new shop too. Omega was by far the best selling watch brand at the time and we were selling up to 450 Omega watches per year, 12 times the number of Rolex watches sold in the same year. This led Michael Jones to give up the Rolex agency to concentrate on Omega more fully. Luckily Rolex were happy to reinstate our agency some years later and now we sell over three times more Rolex than Omega at Gold Street making Rolex our most popular brand. If you were to treat yourself to something from our shop at that time, yellow gold would have been a great investment with the gold price as low as £14.55 per ounce compared to £877.92 at the time of printing.Yellow gold was the most popular metal, far outselling white gold or platinum and hallmarks were not compulsory until 1975. A Rolex back in 1970 such as a stainless steel Datejust with a fluted bezel would set you back about £800 compared to about £5,300 now. Watch fashion tended to be for much smaller watches and a 31mm watch would definitely be considered a gents watch whereas today many ladies wear this size if not bigger. Jewellery was often

textured with engraved patterns or bark effects, tiered cluster and illusion settings were also very popular. We can’t talk about the changes that have happened since the 1970s without talking about things that haven’t changed. As well as moving into Gold Street, 1970 was also the year that Michael changed the company into a co-operative, making the 30 members of staff into the owners and decision makers of the business. This was a big decision on Michael and his wife Anne’s part and almost un-heard of in the town. By gifting the business to the staff he ensured that the members of staff approach their jobs differently and as co-owners have a sense of pride in their company from which customers benefit. As part of the changes, written into the constitution of the business was the instruction to give a percentage of the profit to local charities. The attitude was that people could always spend money on themselves but those who may have slightly more than most should think about those who did not have much. This is a custom that we still enjoy fulfilling to this day and give over £20,000 a year to various local charities. As well as supporting local charities, we also support up and coming designers. All jewellery designers have to start somewhere. We understand that even the biggest names in the trade started at collage or as apprentices and without backing Collection 2013/14

and help they would not be where they are today. With this is mind, as a company, we have always tried to encourage young talent. Back in the 1970s we allowed young designers to take consultations in the shop and create bespoke items for our customers. Today we offer the same service with our onsite goldsmith as well as running design competitions with the local college, taking on work experience students and goldsmiths in training. Another thing that hasn’t changed is our workshops. From the very beginning, Michael Jones has felt strongly that in order to offer a complete service to our customers we needed onsite workshops with experienced skilled technicians that allow us to offer our customers a fast and personal service that can be lost when items have to be sent away. Today, the workshops are still a key part of our business. One thing that will never change is the practice of sealing your new purchases with our wax seal. Michael introduced this when he first opened the shop and our customers delight in the novelty of getting gifts in perfectly wrapped and sealed boxes, or are excited when they spy the distinctive wrapping again, knowing that a wonderful treat is awaiting them.

PORTFOLIO of Fine Diamonds have launched an engagement ring created by legendary designer, Stephen Webster. The special piece is available exclusively from Michael Jones of Banbury and Northampton. Arguably the most famous British jeweller of our time, Webster is known for bold and edgy work. He has designed pieces for many famous names, including Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna and Axl Rose. His keen eye for detail and glam-rock attitude combined with PORTFOLIO’s promise of the highest quality at the best possible price has produced a dramatic design available at £3,500. The ring embodies the elements of a classic engagement ring; a brilliant cut single stone diamond set in platinum, with a modern twist, making a beautiful and distinctive ring. The GIA certified diamond is enveloped by a twirling quatrefoil of diamonds, and held in place by beautifully faceted claws.

Stephen Webster said:

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO BE THE FIRST DESIGNERS TO OFFER AN ORIGINAL AND EXCLUSIVE STEPHEN WEBSTER ENGAGEMENT RING IN COLLABORATION WITH PORTFOLIO OF FINE DIAMONDS. THE DESIGN IS CLASSIC BUT WITH ALL THE DETAIL WHICH DEFINES SW DESIGN, MAKING EACH PIECE UNIQUE FOR AN OCCASION AS SPECIAL AS AN ENGAGEMENT.
