2012 RJR Demon Season Outlook The 2012 RJR Demon baseball team is a very young team: 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen… but do not doubt the heart and determination of this team. The work ethic and baseball IQ of this team rivals those teams in the past that were full of seniors. Pitching, as usual, will be the ultimate key to RJR’s success in 2012. The Demons return only 56 innings of mound experience from 2011 (the most experienced returner has 15 innings pitched). Coach Welch’s pitching staff will be led by his 2 junior lefties, Brandon Sullivan and Hunter Anthony. Also, junior right hander Dean Vlasis will be in the mix. Sophomores, Drew Fisch and Shane Sullivan expect to see time on the bump as well as freshman Logan Welch. The 2012 Demon pitching staff has no real flame throwers, but all throw at least 3 different pitches for strikes consistently. “Throwing strikes and playing great defense will win a lot of games this year with the new BBCORE bats.” Defensively, the Demons should be very strong, anchored up the middle by catcher-Will Cox, short stop-Shane Sullivan, and center fielderTy Andrus. RJR will feature a very fast and athletic defense that showcases good arms at every position. Coach Welch expects his defense to be the strongest part of his program this season. Offensively, the Demons must vastly improve. The 2012 team only returns 1 player that boasted a batting average above .285 in 2011... so let the competition for playing time begin, no job is safe! It may be half way through the season before Coach Welch will have a set line-up... maybe not even then? “We have to throw strikes and play flawless defense, but we can’t win 0-0”. The Demon offense must adjust quickly and execute all the little things while avoiding strike outs, if they want to contend for the Central Piedmont Conference title. Overall, the 2012 RJ Reynolds Demon baseballers are very athletic and have a high baseball IQ. Focusing on the fundamentals at the plate, in the field, and on the mound will make them exciting to watch as they try to steal the CPC title that has eluded them since 2000.

2012 RJR Demon Season Outlook 2012 RJR Demon Varsity Team Coach’s Notes WILL COX Senior 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #4 – 2011 Utility Man Award Winner Plain and simple, Coach Welch expects leadership from Cox. Cox knows the routine, he knows the demands, and he is well aware of Coach Welch’s expectations… ”effort + execution = excellence.” Cox will anchor both the Demon offense (2011 leader in extra-base hits & #2 in RBI) and defense where Cox will spend most of his time behind the plate calling signals and molding the Reynold’s pitching staff. The 2012 young Demon team will look to Cox as their on-field leader. ZACH WILLIS Senior 2012 – 1st Varsity Letter Willis has had injuries in the past and has limited his playing time for the Demons. He hopes to be a quick learner and battle for some playing time in 2012. Willis has great leadership skills and tireless work ethic. Coach Welch hope Zach’s character and desire to win will help lead the Demons as they pursue the 2012 CPC title. HUNTER ANTHONY Junior 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #3 Anthony is athletic, fast and smart… but best of all he is left-handed! Anthony has more varsity innings than any other Demon and Coach Welch expects him to pitch like a veteran. Anthony possesses 3 quality pitches from different arm angles and is a “bulldog” on the mound. Craftiness, smarts, and a moving fastball along with throwing consistent strikes will lead to mowing down opposing hitters. Anthony also plays flawless outfield and may be the best Demon first baseman… if Anthony hits, he will never leave the field. BRANDON SULLIVAN Junior 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #1 – 2011 JV MVP In “Sully’s” first full year on the varsity squad, he immediately challenges for the ACE of the Reynold’s pitching staff. “Sully,” a confident, crafty, strike-monster throwing lefty, truly believes he should throw a complete game every time he takes the mound. Along with his pitching abilities, “Sully” has speed, skill at first base and the outfield, plus a successful “Ichiro” hitting style… Add it all together, equals a lot of playing time. DEAN VLASIS Junior 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #3 Vlasis brings speed, a big bat, DP skills… and mound presence to the Demon roster in 2012. In 2011, Vlasis pitched 15 innings with only 2 walks/12 K’s and a 2.33 ERA. Coach Welch hopes for more of the same… much more! Vlasis also has the capability and strength to be one of RJR’s power hitters (dedication to the weight room)… consistency is the key, but hard work comes second nature to him, so, failure is not an option. If that attitude becomes contagious, the Demons will have a very successful and exciting season. TY ANDRUS Sophomore 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #2 – 2011 Rookie of the Year Andrus, a 24 game starter as a freshman, is the speediest of the Demons. He is a tremendous base runner and plays center field like a veteran... but he can also literally play all 9 positions due to his baseball savvy and pure athleticism. Coach Welch expects Andrus to give opposing pitchers and coaches nightmares as they try to defend his speed, power, and also his bunting skills. Andrus is the Demon spark plug in 2012… and 2013… and 2014.

2012 Media Guide 7

2012 RJR Demon Season Outlook DREW FISCH Sophomore 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #2 Fisch has big “pop” and big desire to become a mainstay in Coach Welch’s every day line-up. At 6'3", Fisch has the ability to play almost every position, including catcher and pitcher. Fisch will challenge for the corners both in the infield and in the outfield. With his raw power and more consistency, Fisch could secure one of those positions… maybe for the next 3 years?? Fisch will also toe the rubber for Coach Welch in 2012. With his new pitches and various arm angles, Fisch certainly has the ammunition to blow opposing hitters away. SHANE SULLIVAN Sophomore 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #2 – 2011 Human Vacuum Award Sullivan came to the Demon baseball program with the idea of playing short-stop for 4 years… Coach Welch agrees after seeing consistent and sometimes brilliant play from his freshman short-stop in 2011. With a year of varsity experience under his belt and a tremendous summer, Sullivan’s offense is expected to match his defense making 2012 a break-out year for him putting him in the class of elite in the Central Piedmont Conference. STEPHEN GREENE Freshman 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #1 Greene comes to RJR baseball as a great defensive catcher that can play 3B or outfield, and… a super left-handed stick. Greene is a very speedy runner with great strength (300+ squat) and is very motivated to make his mark on Demon baseball. This motivation leads to endless energy… this energy will lead to Greene battling for a starting position somewhere in the 2012 opening day line-up. LOGAN WELCH Freshman 2012 – Varsity Baseball Letter #1 Welch brings a lot of defensive versatility to the 2012 RJR baseball team, but he is most polished on the mound with various speed changes and arm angles. 2012 could feature Welch pitching anywhere from #1 to #6 depending on how quickly he adjusts to the perfection needed to pitch in the CPC. Welch is no slouch at the dish either… if he can recognize and battle varsity pitching quickly, he could find himself battling for a starting position right away.

2012 RJR Demon JV Coaching Staff DB Sheek /

JV COACH

DB Sheek is a new addition to the R.J. Reynolds baseball program and will be coaching the JV team this season. DB is a graduate of Forbush High School (‘92) and a graduate of Appalachian State University (‘03). Currently DB is a teacher at Reynolds but has taught high school science and math for 8 years. He’s no stranger to coaching high school athletics having coached soccer at West Valley HS in Fairbanks, Arkansas; baseball for two years at Forbush High School; and three years at Davie High School. When not on the ball field or school you can find DB at home in East Bend. No wife or kids yet so he’s got plenty of time for baseball. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Hamp Kenan /

JV ASSISTANT COACH

Hamp Kenan is a native of Winston-Salem and a 1984 Graduate of RJ Reynolds High School. Kenan lettered in both baseball and soccer in his two years at RJR. In 1989 he graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a degree in Political Science and a Minor in Philosophy. Coach Kenan is a Principal with Integrated Advisory Services, LLC a firm that provides comprehensive wealth management strategies for their clients. Outside of work Hamp has been involved with youth sports since his college days as a Little League coach, child-mentor and is currently an active Board Member of Athletes for Others. Hamp’s wife Barrett also grew up in WinstonSalem and they have three children; Bo (14), daughter Baker (12) and Charles (7). His hobbies include golf, fly-fishing and humor. Coach Kenan’s Words to Live By: “When you win say nothing, when you lose say less.” Coach Paul Brown

Casey Gentry /

JV ASSISTANT COACH

I am 19 years old. I have been a part of baseball for twelve years and this is my first year coaching anything. I played for Coach Welch for 4 years, only one of those years I was on varsity. I graduated in 2011 at RJR. I layed middle infield and pitcher throughout my career at Reynolds. I was born and raised in Walkertown and always went to school in Winston-Salem. I am a freshman this year attending UNCG as a kinesiology major planning on becoming a physical educator and a baseball coach. Baseball is something that I want to be a part of for the rest of my life.

America’s Favorite Pastime “I walk into the clubhouse and it’s like walking into the Mayo Clinic. We have four doctors, three therapists and five trainers. Back when I broke in, we had one trainer who carried a bottle of rubbing alcohol and by the seventh inning he had drunk it all.” Source: Sports Illustrated (May 29, 1989) -Tommy Lasorda

Baseball was one-hundred percent of my life.” Source: The Tumult and the Shouting (Grantland Rice, 1954) –Ty Cobb

“I never doubted my ability, but when you hear all your life you’re inferior, it makes you wonder if the other guys have something you’ve never seen before. If they do, I’m still looking for it.” -Hank Aaron

“Speed is a great asset; but it’s greater when it’s combined with quickness - and there’s a big difference.” Source: The Tumult and the Shouting (Grantland Rice, 1954) –Ty Cobb

“I may have been fierce, but never low or underhand.” Source: Baseball As I Have Known It (Fred Lieb, 1977) –Ty Cobb

When told by a catcher that he was holding the bat wrong because the label wasn’t facing up, he replied “I didn’t come up here to read. I came up here to hit.” –Hank Aaron

“When I played ball, I didn’t play for fun. It’s no pink tea, and mollycoddles had better stay out. It’s a contest and everything that implies a struggle for supremacy, a survival of the fittest.” –Ty Cobb

“You gotta be careful with your body. Your body is like a bar of soap. The more you use it, the more it wears out.” -Richie Allen

“Anybody who’s ever had the privilege of seeing me play knows that I am the greatest pitcher in the world.” –Dizzy Dean

“You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren’t happy in one place, chances are you won’t be happy anyplace.” –Ernie Banks

“I ain’t what I used to be, but who the hell is?” -Dizzy Dean

“I think I have already signed some scrap of paper for every man, woman, and child in the United States. What do they do with all those scraps of paper with my signature on it?” –Vida Blue “Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?” –Jim Bouton “You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.” –Jim Bouton “Base running arrogance is just like pitching arrogance or hitting arrongance. You are a force, and you have to instill that you are a force to the opposition. You have to have utter confidence.” –Lou Brock “I get a kick out of watching a team defense me. A player moves two steps in one direction and I hit it two steps the other way. It goes right by his glove and I laugh.” Source: New York Daily News (July 25, 1979) –Rod Carew “Pro-rated at 500 at-bats per year, my 1,081 strike-outs would mean that for two years out of the fourteen I played, I never touched the ball.” –Norm Cash 48 RJ Reynolds High School Baseball

“I ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up.” –Dizzy Dean “Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.” –Yogi Berra “I’d rather be lucky than good.” –Lefty Gomez “Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice-versa.” –Casey Stengel “The secret of successful managing is to keep the five guys who hate you away from the four guys who haven’t made up their minds.” –Casey Stengel “Most ball games are lost, not won.” –Casey Stengel “Now there’s three things you can do in a baseball game: You can win or you can lose or it can rain.” –Casey Stengel “The key to being a good manager is keeping the people who hate me away from those who are still undecided.” –Casey Stengel “All right everyone, line up alphabetically according to your height.” –Casey Stengel
