Living the ‘Up North’ Dream BY DANIELLE SMITH Taking camping trips to Northern Michigan as a kid are some of the best memories with my family. My parents letting us pick out a screen-printed shirt at this little t-shirt shop by the campground, getting plenty of ice cream, riding many laps around the campsite on our bikes, swimming in Lake Michigan, and playing putt putt golf. I always looked forward to coming and never wanted to leave. 15 years later that came true, as a newlywed, my husband and I moved to Petoskey to start our new life together. I don’t know what it’s like to grow up in Northern Michigan, but starting our family and watching our daughter, Mila, get to experience it is even better! Summer passes by so quickly with it being such a busy time of the year. On the weekends, we often pack up and head to Burt Lake for boating or go enjoy the day somewhere along the shore of Lake Michigan. I also like to take advantage of some of the best trails for hikes or running and it’s a perfect way to burn energy out of our two German Shorthair Pointers. Fall is where my heart is - warm days, beautiful colors, bonfires, hooded sweatshirts, more time with loved ones as things slow down a bit. You will often find my family and I jumping in our side by side with friends to head out on two tracks with a destination unknown. Heading to the U.P. is also often on my agenda throughout the year. It’s another slice of Northern Michigan that I can’t live without and offers a lot of beautiful places that we have found by camping and snowmobiling. I feel really blessed to call this place my home and am reminded of it often through my clients. I have found over the last 13 years of living here that we almost all have a connection to Northern Michigan in some way – whether you are a local, a transplant, or just visiting from time to time. It leaves a special place in your heart and being able to show the area to others makes my work fun!
