Welcome! In this space, we normally highlight all of our upcoming events for the summer. In light of the COVID-19 situation, we have put all of our 2020 events on hold. However, this is a GREAT time to get out on those trails! Even without an organized event you can enjoy the beauty of the bay on the Little Traverse Wheelway, the peacefulness of the country on the North Eastern State Trail, or the smoothness of the newly paved Burt Lake Trail. The trails are here for us at a time many need them most.
Mission Statement Our mission is to advocate for and facilitate the development and maintenance of a safe, multiuse, year-round recreational trail system in Northern Michigan; and to promote the maintenance and use of these trails for the benefit of all.

A Word from the President Dear Trail Supporters, The last twelve months has certainly been an “eventful” period for our organization, the trails and the country at large. We are grateful for your continued support and engagement during this tumultuous period. We have been hard at work over the past year as we continue to Advocate, Maintain and Promote trails throughout Northern Michigan. We have finished another successful year and are pleased to report our progress to our members. Jeff Winegard, our long time Executive Director, stepped down in January after guiding our organization for the past 10 years. After an exhaustive search we hired Brent Bolin from Clean Water Action in Washington DC. Brent brings a wealth of experience to the Trails Council and will help position us for further growth of trails across Northern Michigan.
27312_AnnualReport2020.indd 3
We also completed a strategic study of trails in Northern Michigan that provides us with a roadmap for advocating for new connector trails; increasing usage of existing trails; and providing economic benefits to Northern Michigan communities located on our trails system. The Trails Council continues to work closely with TART (Traverse Area Regional Trails) on building out the Acme to Charlevoix Trail to connect our two networks. Upon completion of this trail, you will be able to ride safe, scenic and secure trails from Alpena to Glen Arbor. In March, we jointly announced the name of the new trail, the Nakwema (nahKWAY-mah) Trailway. Nakwema is Ojibwe for “where paths connect” and reflects the joining of our respective trails systems. In April we experienced the catastrophic collapse of the most scenic portion of the Little Traverse Wheelway, on the bluff just west of the City of Petoskey. The Trails Council is working closely with MDOT, Emmet County, Resort Township and the City of Petoskey to identify a path forward and to provide for a safe alternative. The repairs won’t be quick or easy, but we will work to ensure that the trail is restored for current and future generations.
“Stay Home, Stay Safe” has been difficult for many. Our trail system has provided a needed outlet for healthy activity in our beautiful region while still allowing for social distancing. We have seen heavier and earlier use of the trails as compared to previous years as people of all ages have taken advantage of the trails’ proximity to our natural environment and refuge from vehicle traffic. A special thank you to Becca Nelson, our Associate Director, who “kept the lights on” and our organization on task during the transition from Jeff to Brent. She assumed two roles for several months and was instrumental in helping us to achieve our goals for Q1. Your continued support will help us to address challenges with the Wheelway, complete the Nakwema Trail and build out the vision for trails in Northern Michigan. We look forward to seeing you out on the trails this summer! Regards, Dave Gerathy Board President

Staff Changes This past year brought a lot of new changes to the Top of Michigan Trails Council. From our new logo, to a complete staff change, we look forward to the years ahead. In May of 2019, we said goodbye to our Administrative Assistant, Sue Bouwense, who retired and promptly left on an amazing journey to Armenia. Sue Bouwense, left, With Sue’s with her daughter Caroline at her retirement retirement, the party in June 2019 board revised the staff structure and brought on Becca Nelson as the Associate Director in April of 2019. Becca came to the organization with a love of running and trails and a background in nonprofit work.
With the close of 2019, Jeff Winegard, the Executive Director of the Top of Michigan Trails Council for the past ten years, also retired. Jeff left behind a legacy of building trails and connections, Jeff Winegard, Executive Director as well as ushering 2009-2019 the organization from a small basement office to our current location, right along M-119 – on the Little Traverse Wheelway, across the street from the southern end of the North Western State Trail, and on the North Country Trail, which runs with the Little Traverse Wheelway through our front yard.
As we say goodbye to Jeff, we welcome Brent Bolin. Coming to us after a career in non-profit advocacy and management in the greater Washington, DC area, Brent and his family are no strangers to Northern Michigan. With ties to both Gaylord and the Upper Peninsula, he and his family are excited to relocate to the Petoskey area and help the Top of Michigan Trails Council continue to connect Northern Michigan by trail.

Trail Building Updates Boyne Valley Trailway
Burt Lake Trail
In the fall of 2019, contractors started work on the Boyne Valley trail that will connect Boyne City to not only five schools and Boyne Mountain, but will also connect to Boyne Falls Village with trailhead parking. Paving completed 2020.
Paving of Phase II of the Burt Lake Trail is complete! Phase II continues the trail on West Burt Lake Road, traveling through the UM Biological station property and ending at East Burt Lake Road near Riggsville Rd. To continue development of the trail, funding has been secured for the construction for Phase III, with engineering still in the works and a goal to have construction started in 2021. Phase IV is a widened road shoulder along East Burt Lake Road and will be completed this summer as a part of the road repaving project.
The Nakwema Trailway Formerly known as the Traverse City to Charlevoix Connector Since 2018, Top of Michigan Trails Council and Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails, Inc. (commonly known as TART Trails) have been working to join our networks by connecting the 46 miles between Traverse City and Charlevoix. As the project continues to move along with design and engineering, we are moving forward with a new name Nakwema Trailway. “Nakwema, Ojibwe for ‘where paths connect,’ follows long-ago established routes through the waters and woods of northwest Lower Michigan, allowing active access to the pristine land and waterscapes that have captivated us for centuries.” Learn more at nakwematrailway.org

MAINTAIN It seems like each year, Safety and Maintenance Director, Bill Prall has something up his sleeve. This past year he identified how to handle those “volcanoes” we see on the trails. You know those spots where the roots are trying to pop through? Those volcanoes! Even with the root cutting along the edges of the trail, there is still work to be done to flatten the bumps, and Bill created the Tree Root Bump Remediation Tool Kit. This tool kit is a process of heating the bumps with a torch, softening the asphalt, then tamping them down with tools, creating a smoother ride, run or roll for users.
Most years, Top of Michigan Trails Council hosts a bike swap on the lawn at the Packy Offield Trail Center. It is a great chance to get rid of working, but under used bikes – and you get to share your proceeds with the Top of Michigan Trails Council – a win-win! Unfortunately, this year, we are unable to host the swap on the usual date, in the usual way, but stay tuned as we try to figure how to hold a virtual sale. However, if you want to support the maintenance program, please visit us at trailscouncil.org/donate.

Little Traverse Wheelway Updates The end of 2019 proved to be a rough one for high water levels and erosion on the Little Traverse Wheelway. Looking forward to the 2020 trail season, expect a few closures - one just east of the roadside park between Charlevoix and Petoskey, and the other between Magnus Park and East Park in Petoskey. Together with our partners we are working on solutions to these sections, as well as keeping you up to date through our emails and social media. Between Magnus Park and East Park, between Petoskey and Bay Harbor, the Little Traverse Wheelway is suffering damage from erosion and wash out.

PROMOTE In 2019 Top of Michigan Trails Council kicked off the summer trail season with the Stafford’s Hospitality Festival of Races on Memorial Day Weekend, celebrating all things trails with a party on our front lawn for our Annual Meeting, held a successful bike swap, and tried our hand at a new event - a poker ride. As we look to the summer of 2020, we know things will look a lot different due to social distancing and limited sized gatherings, but in the meantime, we’ll be working on ways to provide you with programming and updates on our trail network.
Emmet County Kids Biking Initiative Each year, every fourth grader from Emmet County, with the help of program director, Cindy Okerlund, learns the joys of riding a bike. Combining exercise, history, science and map reading, the journey from Spring Lake Park to Oden Fish Hatchery has the kids all abuzz—we hear some kids are learning to ride in preparation for this field trip long before Ms. O visits them at school! Without a program running in 2020 due to school closures, Ms. O has been using her dedicated time to this program to thank her numerous volunteers. Check out trailscouncil.org/trails-blog to see the highlights like the one. “Dennis’ leadership skills, his gift of teaching and his love of biking are all definitely connected to our program launching successfully – and remaining strong. Dennis rode over 90% of our all-day outings over the last 3 years…” Cindy Okerlund, speaking of volunteer Dennis Schanski, pictured to the left

Lake 2 Lake In September 2019, Lake 2 Lake participants spent three days biking across northern Michigan. From their back tire touching the shore of Lake Huron, to their front tire dipping into Lake Michigan, riders enjoyed 125 miles along the North East State Trail, the North Central State Trail, the North West State Trail and the Little Traverse Wheelway. What a way to experience the beauty and scenery of our region!
Lake 2 Lake tour participants didn’t let the rain in Alpena at the start of the tour stop them. They rode on, and by the time they arrived in Petoskey, they were all smiles. 11
