Steve Palmer was born in Berkeley, California and raised by a poet and a painter, so it was in his blood to become an artist. One of Steve’s earliest memories is being with his mom while she painted by the ocean, using their car as an easel. Now located in Northern Michigan, Steve is back to the water in the form of humorous mixed media fish. The fish start with a vintage crutch or paddle, and are given a tail, fins, and teeth, then filled with antique items and found objects, and then wired. Steve hopes people will see the connection between his use of things that might otherwise be discarded and the pollution of our waterways. An annual percentage of the sale of Steve’s fish helps support environmental groups. Steve’s first fish included saw blades for a mouth and screwdrivers for a fin. It won $1000 and third place in the 2011 Michigan Fine Arts Competition. Since then his fish have been in many shows and won other prizes. A History of

VITALITY

The Northern Michigan area has long been associated with wellness and vitality. Those who are here year round know that it takes a certain hearty type to live and thrive in an area where the temperatures fall, and the snowfall levels rise for a quarter of the year. But that’s not why the area got its start as a place where people would pilgrimage to for wellness. It was the summertime, and the chance to escape the unchecked pollution and crowding of the cities like Chicago. Here, where the water runs clear and cold and the temperate summer winds continually whisked humidity, ailments, and pollen away.

Seeking Relief With the distinction of having the lowest pollen count in the country, the National Hay Fever Association designated Petoskey as its headquarters in 1882. Thousands suffering from allergies, asthma, and numerous other medical conditions soon flocked to the area in search of relief from their suffering. “Wellness Park” located on Lake Street, boasted artesian wells for fresh drinking water, a hospital, and free waterfront camping at popular nearby Magnus Park. It even included a wading pool, if one was daring enough to expose an ankle in public. Although the hospital is long gone, and the wading pool now hosts a flower bed, the water still flows just as clear and cold to this day. At the height of regional tourism, approximately 13,000 trains and over 150 steamers arrived each season. The 120,000 passengers they escorted, seeking relief from the heat and pollution of the cities, found lodging in the multiple hotels, resorts, and cottages in operation. A few - some of the most prominent names of the time built magnificent summer homes that incorporated and embraced the surrounding natural beauty.

The Chautauqua Movement Chautauqua was an adult education movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s. The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, and specialists of the day. As early as 1875, Bay View embraced the Chautauqua praise of the “great outdoors” and encouraged swimming, tennis, sailing and other outdoor activities. In the earliest years of Bay View, the ladies wore almost as much fabric as that of the tents they slept in. Lifting logs chained to the ground, “chin-ups” and other “man vs. nature” exercises incorporating the great outdoors were popular. A trail leading to the original exercise site still remains as a reminder of an era long gone, but one where health and fitness were as valued as they are today.

In Search of Fins and Fresh Air Period advertisements from the Grand Rapids and Indiana railroad confirm no hopeful angler would have been seen dressed any less formally than their female counterparts of the day. Suits, ties, and a hat were, of course, required attire when out fishing the abundant 48 | harborsir.com


and fruitful streams, lakes and rivers marketed as “The Fishing Line.” Intended to bring not only sportsmen but their families as well, these promotional leaflets praised the “peculiarly beneficial climate” and “pure dry and bracing air” while also offering amenities such as “an at-home feeling, great hotels, and ice for the transfer of trophies.” Adverts also note “Dogs, guns and fishing tackle carried free, but only at the owner’s risk.”

The Popularity of “Wheeling” The bike paths we enjoy today, stretching from Charlevoix to Mackinac would have been welcomed in 1880. Up until the day in 1904 when the local Petoskey bike shop became the first place to purchase gasoline, “wheeling” or “traveling by wheel” was the most common form of transportation in the warmer months. Many area enthusiasts embraced the bike as a fun form of exercise. This bicycle history is commemorated in the Little Traverse History Museum, located on Depot Court just off Lake Street near City Hall, and is also represented by the sculpture of an antique “boneshaker” bicycle in Bayfront Park.

Bring the Sticks If golf was your preferred sport, by 1895, you surely would have played a round at Wequetonsing, one of the country’s oldest courses. Designed using natural obstacles and the lay of the land, the course is still among some of the most challenging around. Playing a round offers one a chance to improve their game among the ghosts of golfers from long-ago. Today, the northern Michigan area is renowned for the great variety of courses available for play.

The Hemingway Connection In 1916, young Ernest Hemingway hiked the better part of the distance from his boyhood home in Oak Park Illinois, outside of Chicago, to northern Michigan. It was the height of the “fitness” craze, led by former President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, an avid outdoorsman, had spent his youth suffering from asthma and general poor health, but discovered “strenuous exertion” and “clean air” provided great relief from his ailments, and advocated the same for others. Young Hemingway, while certainly inspired by Roosevelt, was already very familiar with the virtues that clean air and fresh water afforded. The Hemingway family - the father a physician - had been summering at Bear Lake (Lake Walloon) since 1899. Walloon was surrounded by small resort communities that had already been embracing the pursuit of “healthy living and wellness” for over 20 years. This was a major factor in Dr. Hemingway’s decision to relocate his growing family to Michigan each summer.

Growing Winter Sport Popularity The 1920s and ’30s find the area of Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and Boyne as the “Winter Sports Capital of the Midwest.” Skiing, bobsledding, hockey and downhill sledding provide months of fun and exercise. The highlight was the Winter Fest, complete with an Ice King and Queen, holding court on an ice castle hand carved by the famous M.R. Kellogg.
