The rebirth of a millenary quarry in Saône-et-Loire : a new novel dynamic for the rural communes of Gilly and Diou. on the Loire river.

Ambiences experienced on site (6 ha)

Bourgogne and Auvergne are two regions considered as rural areas and quite sluggish , although being a central passage, the area is described as an «in between», away from the attraction of the South and the North dynamism. The ancient quarries and industrial sites sieving these regions have a picture of neglect. Where an entire generation has been busy at a time, quarries and industrial buildings become in many cases today wet pits and anarchic deposits. My graduation study and project in Gilly-sur-Loire bring the question of the future of the industrial heritage but also of the futur of these small rural villages who lack the economic activities formerly associated with the Loire. Gilly-sur-Loire (71) and Diou (03 ) are separated by the Loire river, but because of this natural limit used as a common administrative boundary, they belong respectively to the Bourgogne and the Auvergne regions. Mining exploiting the many veins of this territory in large marble and limestone quarries have long activated the trade on this bend of the Loire river, as well as hundreds of workers. However , geological resources have gradually diminished and small firms became less profitable. Finally, with the arrival of the canal and the train, the effects of the rural exodus and those of the land consolidation, these regions has been gradually deserted. Only a few companies remain in that territory marked by excavations .

What can be our role, as landscape architects and developers on a neglected and deserted place? These areas have a rich landscape and historical perspective. The question is then to find them new dynamics, new uses, and not to forsake them . I chose to use this legacy quarry with a wild and rough landscape as a living foundation to host a novel garden, capable of giving new life to the area. A quarry is a large-scale sculpture of the land, and the one in Gilly-sur-Loire gives rise to some fantastic and varied atmospheres (atmosphere map on the left and photographies on next page). The size and morphological conditions of this ancient marble quarry in Gilly make it an ideal place for the development of a garden. It will be a sculpture garden, where rock, water and vegetation are present on all ‘tableaux’. The site will also be a place of residence for artists working with natural materials, who will create their art on site and in contact with visitors. The site is arranged to be accessible to all, despite the hard topography, and will be financed by the two regions, with the project ownership being the Bourban-Lancy area , until the handover to the Association of the Gilly- sur- Loire quarries, which would regulate and maintain the garden visits.

PROCESS OF A COMMON LARGE TERRITORY STUDY The landscape architecture workshop of the 4th year at the ENSNP is marked by the study of a large territory. As a class, we analyzed firstly the territory through its geological formation, history, soil science, soil, fauna and flora, its urban development, its economic and touristic activities, highlighting the landscape entities aggregating common specifications. The analysis resulted in the drafting of guidelines and planning issues in connection with the integration of the Community of Communes of Plouay in the SCoT Lorient (SCoT= Territorial Coherence Scheme). After the presentation of this analysis to local actors, we proposed personal projects that answer to the identified issues.

Large territory study - Plouay area (france) rural issues & large scale, ENSNP 4th year, 2012

Personal project in Quistinic: enhance the landscape quality of the village and its panorama by a reasoned agriculture and forestry management. I chose to study and propose a detailed project in the village of Quistinic. The issues there were mainly natural, agricultural and visual. The principal aim of my project was to connect the village to its valleys, its forests and its agricultural plateau. However the main specificity of this territory is its topography and its views, though they are often obstructed by forest or incoherent buildings. To respond to these issues, first of all views needed to be opened and pedestrian network increased. Then neighborhoods have to get denser and not spread on the extension of the village roads or on the hillside. The creation of a ‘path of belvederes’, with a management of forest, agriculture and natural humid vale bottom, was a possibility for Quisitinic to hilight its environment, specific topography and landscapes.

Forest belvedere > Belvedere west of Quistinic : small agricultural and forest park.Return to the heath system in some parts (brittanien heritage) and to the pasture-orchard system on the lower hillside. This system forms a good transition between the flat cultivated fields or pastures and the hill forest, and also allows an open view at this strategic point.

The urban renewal project ‘Mechelen City Impulse is composed of several sub-projects with a total area of 2.5 ​​ ha (Melaan, Korenmarkt, Sint Katelijn street) and were made for some of them in collaboration with the belgian engineering compagny ARA. I had the opportunity to work on the first design phases of two sub-projects of this major reno-

vation of the center of Mechelen: the neighborhood of Zoutwerf and the street Goswin of Stassartstraat. Personnal project : To develop the dynamic and attractivity on the eastern river bank of Saintes Urban project seeking to develop the characteristics of the eastern bank of Saintes: his floodability is highlighted by the descendants green docks degrees fitted to the Charente, and that, when submerged, leading to another scenario where the new place itself becomes dock. The development project also seeks the development of a more natural aspect of this shore.

Continuity of the green, blue and cycle ring of Bruges accessibility & mobility, OKRA, 2013

The city concil of Bruges chose OKRA to realize the study of the Genencor yeast industry area still active. The industrial site breaks the green ring that surrounds the city center of Bruges, and it is thus derives its associated cycle path. Discussions are still ongoing with the head of the industry to negociate the purchase by the municipality of a few surrounding vacant lots and wastelands. The masterplan below (first design phase) shows the proposed intervention of green, structural

and functional areas. A new pedestrian and cycle bridge is proposed, completing the cycle ring of Bruges by linking the existing paths to the east with the new wasteland park and a â&#x20AC;&#x2039;â&#x20AC;&#x2039;way on the water in front of the industry, which links to the existing tracks to the west. Permissions are still to get for path build on water, but this project would allow stunning views as much as a valuation of the blue, green and industrial heritage of this area.

Renovation of an urban park combining aesthetic and ecological water management for the Newtown District of Sydney.

My 4-month work placement at the Turf Design Studio has been extremely rewarding. It was very instructive to discover how people work in a landscaping office, exchanges around a tracing paper, the project working process, the different actors who may be involved, finally the wealth of teamwork. In four months I had time to develop my computer skills (Autocad, Vectorworks, Photoshop etc.) and to really get

involved in the Sydney Park design project, a landscaped park organized with retention ponds and wastewater treatment from the surrounded neighborhood. By working closely with one of this project manager, I had the opportunity to be in charge of a small part of the overall design (the waterfall) and to represent to whole concept by the realization of the Masterplan (next page).

Proposed cascade > My participation in the hydrological engineering part of the project was to investigate, through cuts in the field, the most economical and possible aesthetic solution for a problem of flooding in the west of the site.

A wetland park for the abbey of Pontlevoy (41) water management and patrimony, ENSNP, 2012

Facing the Abbey of Pontlevoy, a large wet meadow, between the village and a poplar, opens on nearby fields. The proposed park, which plays with hydrolic systems of flowing and storage, creats a serie of wetlands accessible to the public through bridges and decks. Different spaces are created with a suitable vegetation and level variations. Views of the abbey are protected and created through slopping backfills. The omnipresent water is the park structure.

A therapeutic garden for the pinconnière hospital, Blois (France) gardens, ENSNP 3rd year, 2010

> First step of the study: inventory (vegetation, accessibility, topography, atmospheres, links with the environment...)

In 2010 the ENSNP got a study agreement for the third year class with the geriatric hospital of Blois, specialized in care for the elderly with Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease. The study focused on three specific sites of this health center located on the outskirts of Blois, in the heart of the forest. Three gardens as welcoming outdoor spaces were to design in a therapeutic aim, to provide a place to rest and enjoy, while being able to reach their users.

My personal project played with the existing topography to offer seniors a central covered space platform in the new garden, consisting of aromatic and contrasting plantations with staggered wood paths.

An Acer palmatum, which has a bright deciduous foliage, is planted in a central position in the kiosk, as a symbol marking the seasons and therefore being a temporal reference for elderly losing their bearings.

Historical park of Hillegom city hall

The city of Hillegom is historically situated on the dunes road connecting Leiden and Amsterdam (before the creation of polders). Its old city hall was formerly an inn for travelers of this road. The current park surrounding this building and the new administration building is very marked by hard materials (asphalt, pavements, numerous low walls and height differences). The municipality called on to OKRA to design a new park closer to the former domain, in an English style, which will represent a stopover on the future boulevard of Hillegom.

Outline of a showcase-garden for the association of aromatic producers of the Bauges mountains.

Mr. Durandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plot seemed to me full of resources for the creation of a showcasegarden for the association of aromatic producers of the Bauges. The presence of a stream, of a rich natural vegetation and of an open meadow adjoining the sale building (which is also a rural hostel) have allowed me to develop a concept of a visitor guiding line linking the hiking trail (road) with the aromatic garden arranged like a theater having the mountains as a scenery. The main goals of my garden project were then to highlight the aromatic producers activity, while allowing a pleasant and informative visit.

> Proposition of a land art installation for the ‘fête des feuilles’, land art competition in the Parc de la Tête d’Or, Lyon (France). Concept based on the relationship between human being and trees, and between trees themselves. (model self-realized)

2 months professional internship at X.studio::Ivan Juarez, architecture and landscape design company in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. My 2-month work placement at X-Studio, an architecture, urban and landscape design studio in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, has been also a great experience. My work was more about artistic interventions in the city, participation in an architectural projet and participation to workshops organization and applications for garden festivals. I learned more about concept design in landscape and architecture with Ivan Juarez, a multi-published landscape architect. Our talks about land art and his previous works were a great experience for me.

DIAGNOSIS METHODS

Phytosanitary diagnosis can be divided into three types of research: sanitary analysis is to identify pathogens (fungi, insects, bacterias), the stability analysis which assesses the amount of corrupt timber inside a trunk and therefore to know the risk of tree rupture or collapse.

Finally, the analysis of vitality of a tree can now be estimated using a technology able to evaluate their photosynthetic activity.

Analysis This grove is composed of few species (ash, elm, maple and acacia). It is evolving into a mapleash groupment ( wild stage) by the lack of maintenance. In terms of vegetation layers, it is very poor. The majority of trees are almost the same age. Cherry laurels invade the edge and make the grove more opaque. Management proposed It is essential to renew the whole grove with clean cuts and replant young tillers in the next 5 years . Over time, management will be promoting the irregularity of the grove, it will vary densities to master the sun-

shine which should be sufficient to allow the development of young trees planted later, as a good quality grove is composed of different age specimen. On the edge, cherry laurels have to be tear off and replaced by less opaque and non-invasive shrubs. The american red oak should also be removed, which is suffering from a neck rot, because it can fall at any time .

Enlargement and repeated cleaning, recalibration and removal of meanders on almost all of the length of the Cisse river and its tributaries have greatly affected the natural functioning of streams. These operations were undertaken on the initiative of farmers seeking a better flow of water, but they have resulted in chronic siltation , loss of ecological diversity, weakening of banks and aquatic habitats, decreased capacity for aquatic plants self-purification etc.

The European Union has fixed to all its members the objective of achieving good ecological status of water bodies by 2015. The five syndicates of the Cisse Catchment Basin agreed on a contract. The techniques used in this context, all about ecological engineering, are intended to improve the overall functioning of the Cisse and its tributaries :

Tenders experience in France, Switzerland and Belgium personnal skills, OKRA, 2013

6-month final internship at OKRA Landschapsarchitecten b.v., landscape architecture company in Utrecht, Netherlands. OKRA being an international company, I had the opportunity to work on applications for tenders, and then offers in France but also in Belgium, in Switzerland and the Netherlands. I familiarized with the procedure of responding to tenders : compilation of administrative documents and project references of the team corresponding to the tender, which represents the joint expertise of the group and seek to convince the contracting authority that this team is the

best to achieve the project. If selected on the tender application, the team must submit an offer, stage on which I also had the opportunity to work. If the offer phase is successful and if the team is chosen as the prime contractor, it’s time to be creative, inventive and technically convincing in presenting our ideas, and diplomat in meetings with the project ownership. I was able to observe and participate to all these phases of the landscape design project.

In order to prepare me for becoming a landscape achitect, I spent my first two internships of two months as a gardener in botanical gardens. My first experience was in Wales and was full of discoveries, both linguistic and floristic. My internship in Greece during my second year of higher school was very different: the discovery of the Mediterranean flora, culture and customs were on the opposite! Those manual experiences gave me a good knowledge of botany, but also an understanding of the soil, and of the effective implementation of design concepts. Difficulties in the implementation and on the maintenance of landscape projects are constraints that I since keep in mind.
