Southern classic paired with beer, bourbon, or wine at the Trail Smokehouse—open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Wine Country Gardens in Defiance sits on forty-two acres of beautiful rolling hills that overlook the Missouri River Valley. The Gardens serves delicious food in addition to offering a large selection of domestic and foreign wines. Its landscaping was featured in Better Homes and Gardens. The road southwest to Augusta is fairly undemanding and incredibly beautiful. The highway kisses the bank of the Big Muddy before turning westward into a bit more challenging drive. At Augusta, you’ll want to take lots of time to visit all the vineyards and wineries. Remember this is a short route, so take your time. The final three wineries lie back on the road between Augusta and Dutzow. Remember: drink responsibly when riding.

THIS ROUTE IS quite a bit shorter than the others in this guide. But once you see what the trail holds, we think you’ll be stopping a lot along the way, making for an eventful— and delicious—trip through the state’s historic wine country. This one’s easy to follow; just take Route 94 the whole way. The hills, turns, and beautiful vistas make it a must! The route begins in Defiance, just thirty-eight miles west of St. Louis, where the wineries and unique dining experiences may make you want to delay your start until after lunchtime. The Katy Trail runs through Defiance, so you’re likely to encounter the other form of biker on your journey. The Defiance Roadhouse is known as a pit stop for bikers with great food, St. Louis branded beer, a covered patio, and a horseshoe pit. Don’t miss the resident squirrels!
