If an abrupt disaster such as an earthquake or a terrorist attack happens in your city, you'll want to get home as quickly as possible (assuming your home isn't too close to ground zero). Unless you work right around the corner, this may prove difficult. If people are panicking, they can get in your way or become very dangerous. And once you're home, there may come a time when you need to go out in search of water and supplies. In case this happens, you need to know how to avoid strangers. Desperate people are far more likely to become criminals, especially if there is a lack of law enforcement.

Get a map of your local area. You should be able to find a good local map at most grocery and convenient stores, but you can also use Google Maps. Just type in your address, zoom out just enough to see areas where you might need to travel, then print. Now find a good pen, pencil and highlighter so you can mark potentially dangerous areas. First you need to identify the "choke points." These are places where congestion from traffic/people might get so bad it could slow you down or stop you from getting

home. Ask yourself, "Where is five o'clock rush hour traffic the worst?" and highlight those sections of road. Other choke points include bridges, tunnels, canyons and other spots that could be closed during an emergency. Highlight them. Traffic isn't the only hazard. You'll also want to avoid large groups of people. In a disaster, those who aren't prepared tend to congregate in areas where they think free food and water will be available. If there isn't, some of these people might become violent and start looting or robbing one another. Find these places on your map:

keywords above and it will show you every location. Now mark each of these locations with an X. Finally, you'll want to find out about criminal activity in your city. Visit CrimeReports.com to find crime hot spots in your area. Just type in your home address and zoom out enough to where you can also see your place of work. Set the period to 30 days, then click on "Crime Types" and uncheck everything but the violent crimes/robberies. Note the light blue boxes that have two smaller boxes inside. These indicate there have been multiple incidents in these locations. If they're dangerous spots now, they're going to be even more dangerous in a disaster, so circle them.

• Auditoriums Now you have a map of your area with heavy traffic and choke points highlighted, large gathering places marked with an X, and places with a lot of crime circled. The next thing you need to do is find a route from your workplace to your home that avoids all of these. There might be several possible routes, so go for a drive and try each of them. Whichever one has the best roads and the widest streets is probably the one you should plan on using. Use a red pen to draw this route on your map and make color copies, one for every car and a few more to keep at home.

This chapter provides insight into the relationship you are entering into with law enforcement -- what you can expect from the investigation, what types of questions you are likely to be asked, and what situations you and your family are likely to encounter in the process.

Understanding these expectations will deepen your knowledge of law enforcement's role, establish a sound basis for your relationship with the agencies and organizations that are there to help, and assist you in handling this all-too-sudden change in circumstances. removed from the suspect list. As painful as it may be, accept the fact that a large number of children are harmed by members of their own families, and therefore you and your family will be considered suspects until you are cleared. To help law enforcement move on to other suspects, volunteer early to take a polygraph test. Insist that both parents be tested at the same time by different interviewers, or one after another. This will help to deflect media speculation that one of you was involved in the disappearance. Insist that everyone close to your child be interviewed. Encourage everyone -- including family members, friends, neighbors, teachers, and coaches -- to cooperate in the investigatory process. Although polygraph testing is voluntary, refusal to take a polygraph can cause law enforcement to spend time trying to eliminate an individual from the suspect list through other means and, as a result, take valuable time away from finding the real suspect. Leave the interviewing of your other children to law enforcement. Do not question your children yourself. Especially with younger children, insist that a law enforcement officer who is trained to interview children conduct the questioning. Many law enforcement

agencies have a child abuse unit with officers who are specially trained to work with children. You can also ask to have a child advocate sit in on the interview with your child. Child advocates are specially trained volunteers who provide assistance and support to children involved in the legal process. Child advocates are normally housed in the district attorney's office, the court, or the law enforcement agency. Ask law enforcement for information about your local child advocate office. If your child is very young, you may be asked to sit in on the interview. Don't be alarmed, however, if law enforcement prefers to interview your children alone. Be prepared for constant law enforcement presence in your home. For the protection of you and your family, an officer may be assigned to your home on a 24-hour basis. Although this presence may feel intrusive, welcome the officer, and recognize that this person is there to answer calls and take leads, protect you and other members of your family from potential harm, and provide support. If your law enforcement agency is small, however, it may not have the resources to place an officer in your home 24 hours a day. In those circumstances, it is still reasonable for you to ask for

added law enforcement protection in your home. Talk regularly with your primary law enforcement contact. The officer who responded initially to your call for help may not be your permanent family contact. If there is a good chance that your child has run away, for example, your primary law enforcement contact may work in the missing persons unit. If it is suspected that force was used to abduct your child, your case may be handled by a detective from homicide. Find out who your primary law enforcement contact is and get his or her phone and beeper numbers. Make sure that you find out the name of the backup person to call when your primary law enforcement contact is not available. Pick a time of day for your contact to call you with information. But realize that there will be days when your investigator has nothing to report. Also, designate one person to serve as the primary law enforcement contact for the family. If your investigator is bombarded with telephone calls from family members and friends, valuable time will be taken away from the investigation. Make sure investigators know that you expect to hear about significant developments in the case from them, not from the media. The flip side of this is that you must

BIG Constructions

honor law enforcement's request not to disclose some pieces of information to the media. Understand, however, that law enforcement may not be able to tell you everything about the case because full disclosure might jeopardize the investigation. Satisfy yourself that law enforcement is handling your child's case properly. All of the agencies involved in the investigation should be cooperating with one another in pursuit of one goal -- finding your missing child and getting the predator off the street. The checklist Working With Law Enforcement lists the most important steps that law enforcement can take to find your missing child. The more you understand the investigatory process, the better able you will be to ask questions about it. However, you should be aware that most law enforcement officers do not have firsthand experience working on a missing child case. If your primary contact cannot answer a question, find out who can. Also, if you feel that your child's disappearance has been classified inappropriately, ask to speak to the officer's supervisor or to someone else who may have more experience in these types of cases. Don't take no for an answer if you feel strongly that something else needs to be done.

KIDNAPPING Kidnapping, historically, indicated the seizing and carrying away of children to make them slaves or servants or for some other nefarious purpose; for example, the marriage of an infant heiress to acquire a claim to her property. The term now applies to any taking or carrying away of persons against their will, either by transporting them out of the country or by confining them within the country to secure a ransom or some other concession in return for their freedom. Crime Punishable Offences Kidnapping is expressly condemned in the Canadian Criminal Code. Anyone who confines or imprisons another against his will, or causes another to be sent without lawful justification out of Canada, or, and this is the most usual and popular conception of the offence, holds another against his will for ransom or services, is liable to life imprisonment. It is also an offence to imprison a person unlawfully, not

necessarily holding him in a jail, but, for example, without lawful cause detaining him for any purpose, even without seeking a ransom or other concession for his freedom. Such unlawful imprisonment is punishable by a 5-year sentence. The code treats the kidnapping of a female or a child under 14 as the distinct offence of Abduction, regarding such an act as usually being for sexual purposes. In 1985, there were 1327 reported cases of kidnapping, and 284 charges were laid against 168 males, 80 females and 9 juveniles. The 1973 Treaty on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Diplomats made the kidnapping of diplomats criminal by international law. regardless of the nationality of the terrorist or the place where the act of terrorism occurred. Occasionally, this has meant that the offender has been unlawfully captured by authorities of the country in question and his arguments condemning his kidnapping have been rejected, since by international law only a state can complain if its territory or its ships on the high seas are interfered with in any way. The matter has been dealt with by a series of international treaties drawn up by the International Civil Aviation Organization, with its headquarters in Montréal. In accordance with these, any act of violence against

aircraft, and especially hijacking, is criminal. The passengers who have been kidnapped in this way must be freed by the country in which the plane has landed and the offenders must be tried by that country or returned for trial to any country which is directly affected. Canada is a party to each of these treaties. In recent civil wars, rebels have often kidnapped civilians and held them hostage, in the same way as have many terrorists. The United Nations adopted a Hostage Convention to which Canada is a party, making such kidnappers liable to trial in any country where they may be found.

CHALLENGING Cyber Bullying The Internet has created a whole new world of social communications for young people who are using email, Web sites, instant messaging, chat rooms and text messaging (STM) to stay in touch with friends and make new ones. In school ... you don't want anyone to think of you as a "gossip" or someone who says things about other people. Everyone wants to be "nice." You don't have to be nice if you don't want to online. 13 year old girl, Edmonton While most interactions are positive, increasingly kids are using these communication tools to antagonize and

intimidate others. This has become known as cyber bullying. A Media Awareness Network survey showed that 34 per cent of Canadian students have been bullied and 27 per cent of those kids were bullied over the Internet. Today's young Internet users have created an interactive world away from adult knowledge and supervision. Because bullies tend to harass their victims away from the watchful eyes of adults, the Internet is the perfect tool for reaching others anonymously - anytime, anyplace. This means for many children, home is no longer a refuge from the

cruel peer pressures of school. The anonymity of online communications means kids feel freer to do things online they would never do in the real world. Media Awareness Network research shows that 60 per cent of students pretend to be someone else when they are online. Of those, 17 per cent do so because they want to "act mean to people and get away with it". Even if they can be identified online, young people can accuse someone else of using their screen name. They don't have to own their actions, and if a person can't be identified with an action, fear of punishment is diminished.

This lack of feedback minimizes feelings of empathy or remorse. Young people say things online that they would never say face-to-face because they feel removed from the action and the person at the receiving end. There are several ways that young people bully others online. They send e-mails or instant messages containing insults or threats directly to a person. They may also spread hateful comments about a person through e-mail, instant messaging or postings on Web sites and online diaries. Young people steal passwords and send out threatening e-mails or instant messages using an assumed identity. Technically savvy kids may build whole Web sites, often with password protection, to target specific students or teachers.

school or even in their own rooms. Built-in digital cameras in cell phones are adding a new dimension to the problem. In one case students used a camera-enabled cell phone to take a photo of an overweight classmate in the shower after gym. The picture was distributed throughout the school email list within minutes. Schools are struggling to address the issue of cyber bullying among students, especially when it occurs outside of school. When real world bullying occurs in a schoolyard or classroom, teachers are often able to intervene, but online bullying takes place off the radar screen of adults, making it difficult to detect in schools and impossible to monitor off school property. Cyber bullying and the law

An increasing number of kids are being bullied by text messages through their cell phones. These phones are challenging the ability of adults to monitor and guide children because, unlike a computer placed in a public area of a home, school or library, mobiles are personal, private, connected - and always accessible. Kids tend to keep their phones on at all times, meaning bullies can harass victims at

response is a pro-active or preventative one.

A cyber bully may also be violating the Canadian Human Rights Act, if he or she spreads hate or discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status or disability.

Get involved and be aware:

Learn everything you can about the Internet and what your kids are doing online. Talk to them about the places they go online and the activities that they are involved in. Be aware of what your kids are posting on Web sites, including their own personal home pages. Encourage your kids to come to you if anybody says or does something online that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened. Stay calm and keep the lines of communication and trust open. If you "freak out" your kids won't turn to you for help when they need it.

The role of Internet service providers (ISPs) and cell phone service providers Internet service providers (ISPs) are the companies that provide Internet access to consumers. Most ISPs have Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) that clearly define privileges and guidelines for those using their services, and the actions that can be taken if those guidelines are violated. ISPs and cell phone service providers can respond to reports of cyber bullying over their networks, or help clients track down the appropriate service provider to respond to. What parents can do

Encourage kids to develop their own moral code so they will choose to behave ethically online:

• •

Talk to your kids about responsible Internet use. Teach them to never post or say anything on the Internet that they wouldn't want the whole world including you - to read.

Create an online agreement or contract for computer use, with your kids' input. Make sure your agreement contains clear rules about ethical online behaviour. MNet's research shows that in homes where parents have clear rules against certain kinds of activities, young people are much less likely to engage in them.

• •

Take action if your child is being bullied online:

Watch out for signs that your child is being bullied online - a reluctance to use the computer

or go to school may be an indication. If the bully is a student at your child's school, meet with school officials and ask for help in resolving the situation. Report any incident of online harassment and physical threats to your local police and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If your child is bullied through a cell phone, report the problem to your phone service provider. If it's a persistent problem, you can change the phone number.

What schools can do • • •

Integrate curriculum-based anti-bullying programs into classrooms. Educate teachers, students and parents about the seriousness of cyber bullying. Change the school or board's bullying policy to include harassment perpetrated with mobile and Internet technology. Update the school or board's computer Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to specifically prohibit using the Internet for bullying.

If you are being harassed online, take the following actions immediately:

Tell an adult you trust - a teacher, parent, older sibling or grandparent. If you are being harassed, leave the area or stop the activity (i.e. chat room, news group, online gaming area, instant messaging, etc.). If you are being bullied through e-mail or instant messaging, block the sender's messages. Never reply to harassing messages. Save any harassing messages and forward them to your Internet Service Provider (i.e. Hotmail or Yahoo). Most service providers have appropriate use policies that restrict users from harassing others over the Internet - and that includes kids! If the bullying includes physical threats, tell the police as well.

What kids can do Because most incidents of bullying occur off adults' radar screens, it's important that young people learn to protect themselves online and respond to cyber bullying among peers when they encounter it.

• Guidelines for children and teens: •

Guard your contact information. Don't give people you don't know your cell phone number, instant messaging name or e-mail address.

BIG Constructions

Take a stand against cyber bullying with your peers. Speak out whenever you see someone being mean to another person online. Most kids respond better to criticism from their peers than to disapproval from adults.

Google Is the search engine and information gathering phenomenon that collects bits and pieces of information available online. Our kids have dubbed searching for yourself or others you have met, or want to meet, online as “Googling” someone. As more and more of us are using the Internet to communicate and share our ideas, more and more of our personal information is posted online. Perhaps it’s a profile you put up years ago that still exists. Maybe you signed up for a free messaging service online and didn’t check the privacy box when the registration application was completed. Is your telephone number listed in the United States and have you ever given it out online? If so, anyone who wants to can find out where you live and get a map to your front door. This holds true for your children as well. Even though laws exist in the United States to prevent Web site from knowingly collecting information from our preteens, they have learned how to get around the law by saying they are thirteen or fourteen, or twenty-seven. Had someone sought out her personal information postings online and known about the threat, her life might have been saved. Okay, now you are convinced. Some sites don’t care about what is posted there, even if their terms of service prohibit certain personal information from being posted or used to harass someone. about prohibiting posting of information intended to harass or embarrass someone or that might affect their safety or well-being? Sometimes the terms of service has a catch-all prohibition that can be used to remove anything the hosting company deems inappropriate. If you approach it from a safety and privacy perspective, this may be sufficient to convince them to remove the information. If all else fails, every terms of service has a prohibition against criminal or illegal activities. Depending on what information is being posted, you may be able to rely on that provision and a broad claim of “privacy law” violations to get some help.

There may also be a privacy contact at the site, or a DMCA contact (that’s a law that covers copyright violations and usually has someone watching those e-mails carefully). Your e-mail should include the URL of the page that includes your personal information. to generally remove your personal information (absent a privacy policy at the site that promises to do so, a legal requirement or a TOS violation discussed above), COPPA is very carefully enforced and the Web site MUST remove your child’s information. They may require that you prove you are the parent, but otherwise have no option but to remove the information, immediately.

sexual want ads for people they want to harm and frighten, and even the children of those they want to harm. The middle of the night hang-ups can sometimes be explained when you find a site like this, or a posting in a newsgroup making outrageous offers on your behalf. Law enforcement should be involved, if there is any link to real offline contact information. Contact your local law enforcement agency first.

But what if you have posted information about yourself, or others have done so for you, and it’s not accurate? You don’t mind that it’s posted, but you do mind that it’s not correct? That may be easier or harder to have corrected than having it removed entirely. Try using the same methods we suggested for having information removed, but also include the correct information in the e-mail. Sometimes it is easier to just have the information removed entirely, and repost it correctly. For some reason, the two-step process of both removing the old information and adding the updated and correct information is more than many Web sites can handle.

It’s your privacy. Protect it!

If you find a site that is designed to harass you or target you or your children for sexual solicitations or harassment, you need to get help immediately. Cyberstalkers and harassers often use the Internet to post

EYES to Sexual Exploitation ADULTS: Change begins with your awareness – Know the facts! Police agencies across Canada report growing incidences of child sexual exploitation, online and offline. All young people can be at risk if they are not educated and aware. Sexual Exploitation is any attempt to use a position of power, authority or trust to compel a vulnerable person to

take part in sexual activity. If one person gains sexual gratification, financial reward or social/political status through the abuse of another person’s sexuality, that is exploitation. A child (defined as someone under age 18) is sexually exploited if he or she: •

is selling sex in exchange for money, food, shelter, drugs, transportation or anything else of value.

is used in pornography.

is “trafficked” – moved outside their familiar surroundings to be used for sexual purposes. Human trafficking is the third most profitable organized criminal activity after trafficking in drugs and small arms.

It’s against the law Providing any form of payment in exchange for any sexual activity with someone under age 18 is not prostitution, it’s child sexual abuse. It is illegal because it is known to be damaging to the individual youth and to society. •

The Criminal Code of Canada makes it illegal to procure or solicit someone to engage in illicit sex with another person, (often called pimping). When convicted of “pimping” someone under age 18, the sentence can be much higher.

BIG Constructions

Communicating with someone under age 18 for the purpose of obtaining sexual services is against the law in Canada. It is illegal to use a computer to lure a child to engage in sexual activities.

A Canadian who travels to another country to engage in sex with underage youth can be charged in Canada.

It’s a violation of rights and international laws Article 34 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by Canada and almost every other country, clearly requires that States must protect children from all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse. It happens every day in our communities Sometimes sexual exploitation happens in plain view, on our streets. Or it flickers across the computer screen in pornographic images. Often, and especially when it involves children/youth, it is hidden. It happens in brothels, massage parlours, and in private homes. Gang houses called ‘trick pads’ are a primary venue for sexual exploitation.

SEXUAL EXPLOITATION IS NOT INEVITABLE! When we create a united front and say ‘no more’; when we educate ourselves and our children that they have a right to control their own bodies; when we teach them how to get help and make sure there are resources they can access, we have a good chance of reducing the sexual exploitation of children and youth.

The Canadian Red Cross offers programs for children, youth, adults and organizations. Young people learn about all forms of abuse, their rights to be healthy, safe and control their own bodies, and how to get help. Adults and organizations learn about abuse, exploitation, harassment and violence, why and how they happen and how to create safer environments and protect children.

PREVENTION EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO ENDING EXPLOITATION

I always use the "buddy" system. 4 ) I say NO if someone tries to touch me in ways that make me feel frightened, uncomfortable, or confused. Then I go tell a grown-up I trust what happened. 5 ) I know it is not my fault if someone touches me in a way that is NOT OK. I don't have to keep secrets about those touches. 6 ) I trust my feeling and talk to grown-ups about problems that are to big for me to handle on my own. A lot of

How many times have you heard this on television?

“Sorry, but your son has to be missing for 24 hours before we can take a report.”

While it’s true in the past some departments had waiting periods, that’s no longer the case. You can file a missing person’s report immediately, but there are some guidelines. You should:

Report a missing child anytime.

BIG Constructions

Report an adult if the adult is physically or mentally impaired Report an adult if they have a medical condition needing attention Report an adult if you have reason to believe he or she is the victim of foul play.

Remember, most investigations are conducted by the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction where the missing person lived. If someone disappears between his home in Dallas and his destination of Anchorage, report

his disappearance to the Dallas Police. Otherwise, contact the police where the person was last seen and they’ll tell you what to do next. Other ways to make filing a missing person’s report more productive: •

Provide the officer taking the report a recent photo.

Prepare a physical description: Note height, weight, scars, marks and tattoos, clothing, jewelry, hair, eye and complexion color, as well as vocal characteristics (accent, husky, low, etc.).

Make a list of the missing person’s friends and acquaintances. In addition to names, provide addresses and phone numbers.

Parents should keep a manila envelope for each child with a recent photo, a lock of the child’s hair and contact information for the child’s friends.

Police know every minute counts in a missing person’s investigation. By knowing how to properly file a report, you can avoid wasting precious time.

Many pre-schoolers are already active computer users. According to a report from the National Center for Education Statistics, 67 per cent of preschool-age children use a computer, and 23 per cent use the Internet. While children at this age have a limited attention span for online activities, Internet images and sounds can stimulate their imagination and add to their experiences. Parents and older siblings can take pre-schoolers on the Internet, visit Web sites and play online games. At this age, adults have an important role to play in teaching safe Internet use and monitoring their children’s reactions to online material.

Child Abduction Statistics How to prevent CHILD abductions Whenever the evening news brings the story of a kidnapped child or teen, the terrifying prospect of abduction fills the minds of parents across the country. But it's important to remember that the majority of children will pass through childhood safely. One of the challenges of being a parent is to teach your children to be cautious without filling them with too much fear or anxiety. Although some dangers do exist, there are steps that you can take to lessen the chances that your child will be abducted. Approximately 2,100 missing-children reports are filed each day. All of these cases might be solved more easily if parents were able to provide a few key pieces of information about their children, like: height, weight, eye color, and a clear recent photo. The Reality of Child Abductions The circumstances surrounding child abduction are often quite different from the way they are portrayed in TV shows and movies. The majority of children who are reported missing have run away, or there has been a misunderstanding with their parents about where they were supposed to be.

Of the kids and teens that are truly abducted, the majority of them are taken by a family member or an acquaintance; 25% of kids are taken by strangers.

Almost all children kidnapped by strangers are taken by men, and about two thirds of stranger abductions involve female children.

Most abducted children are in their teens.

Children are rarely abducted from school grounds.

Strategies for Preventing Abductions: Parents often do not provide their children with safety information that could help prevent an abduction. These strategies may help: •

Make sure custody documents are in order.

Never accept candy or gifts from a stranger.

Never go anywhere with a stranger, even if it sounds like fun. Predators can lure children with questions like "Can you help me find my lost puppy?" or "Do you want to see some cute kittens in my car?" Remind your children that adults they don't know should never ask children to help or to do things for them. • Run away and scream if someone follows them or tries to force them into a car. Say no to anyone who tries to make them do something you've said is wrong or touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. Teaching Kids to Be Safe Without Making Them SCARED Tips for Safety with Strangers and People Children Know Children’s personal safety skills, when supported, can help them stay safe with most people most of the time. You can teach children to be safe without scaring them - You just need to know how. Young people are at risk of assault, abduction, and abuse even in caring families, schools, and communities. Prevention is the key to protecting children’s personal safety. The good news is that there are simple and effective ways of teaching children how to protect themselves that will work most of the time. Parents, teachers, and other caregivers need to know that their children are more likely to be harmed by someone they know than by a stranger. Children need to have clear safety rules both for strangers when they are out on their own and for setting boundaries with people they know. Anyone can be a child molester—a neighbour, a relative, a family friend, a youth group leader, a teacher, even another child. The best way to protect your children’s personal safety is to make the

time to ask them often, "Is there anything you’ve been wondering or worrying about that you haven’t told me?" and to listen to their answers with patience and respect.

focusing on the bad things that sometimes happen, we encourage parents and caregivers to focus on teaching and practicing the skills and behaviours they want their children to use to stay safe with strangers.

Children need to understand that there are different safety rules when they are not in the care of an adult and they are on their own. Children who are only a short distance away from an adult in charge even for a few minutes are on their own. They don’t need to worry. They just need to know what to do. Just telling children about safety or just showing children what to do is not enough. When we just talk to children about danger, their raised awareness can actually raise their level of anxiety. Young people learn best by actively participating. Practicing children’s personal safety skills increases their confidence and competence. It is important to do this in a way that is not scary, but is fun. Your child can learn with you.

Be sure that you are calm yourself when you talk to kids about strangers. If you sound anxious, they will pick up on that. Talking about “stranger danger” or focusing on scary stories can increase fear and anxiety for everyone. Instead, tell kids in a matter-of-fact way that you believe that most people are GOOD, and that this means that most strangers are good, but that a few people have problems that might cause them to hurt kids. Tell children that they do NOT have to worry about strangers if they follow the safety rules. If children are by themselves, the safety rule is to come and check with an adult first before getting close to or talking to anyone they don't know well. Help kids come up with specific examples of people they know well and people they don't.

Talking to Your Kids About Strangers “Stranger danger” is an idea that can increase anxiety and make it harder for us to figure out ways of helping our children stay safe.

Safety Rules for Children when They Are on their Own •

A stranger is just someone I don’t know and can look like anybody.

The rules are different when I am with an adult who is taking care of me and when I am on my own. When I am on my own, my job is to check first with the adult in charge before I let a stranger get close to me, talk to me, or give me anything.

I will know what my family's safety rules are for children answering the door, being on the phone, and being on the internet.

To Be Able to Follow These Rules, Children Need to Practice: • How to stand and walk with awareness and confidence

If I am old enough to be out on my own without an adult to ask, it is safer to be where there are other people close by to get help if I need it. I do not give personal information to a stranger or to someone who makes me feel uncomfortable.

How to keep a safe distance from someone approaching them

How to walk away from a stranger without waiting even if that person is being very nice

It is OK to get help from strangers if an emergency is happening to me, and there is no one close by that I know.

How to check first even when someone says not to

How to get help from a busy or insensitive adult if they are lost or scared

How to make noise, run, and get to safety in case of an emergency

What to say and do if a stranger approaches them at home

My job is to check first with the adult in charge before I go anywhere with anyone (a stranger or someone I know). I will tell the adult in charge where I am going, who will be with me, and what I will be doing. I will have a safety plan for how to get help anywhere I go.

Safety Rules With People Kids Know

To Be Able to Follow These Rules, Children Need to Practice:

I belong to myself--my body, my time, my spirit-ALL of me. Touch for play, teasing, or affection has to be both people's choice and it has to be safe.

No one should ask me to touch them in their private areas.

Touch or other behaviour for health or safety is not always a choice, but also should never, EVER, have to be a secret.

Saying "No" to unwanted or inappropriate behaviour using polite clear words, eye contact, and assertive body language

Persisting even when someone uses bribes, hurt feelings, or power to try to pressure them into doing something that makes them feel uncomfortable

Protecting themselves from hurtful words

Verbal choices for getting out of potentially dangerous situations

Getting the attention of busy adults and telling the details about situations that make them confused or uncomfortable.

Except for health, no one should touch me in my private areas (the parts of the body covered by a bathing suit).

I do not have to let what other people say control how I feel.

Anything that bothers me should not have to be a secret.

If I have a problem, I need to tell an adult I trust and keep on telling until I get help.

BIG Constructions

It is never too late to get help.
