In the past Robots have been seen as something to be scared of. But now robots are used to save lives, not endanger them! Look at Ultimate Robot p172, Robots Kingfisher Books p32, Robot

On computers, take a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4128728.stm. Here chn can read article & watch news broadcast of how British robot Scorpio 45 helped rescue seven Russian submariners when they became trapped. Question the chn to assessunderstanding, e.g. How many submariners were there? (7) How long were they down there? (72hrs) How deep were they? (190m) Etc. Who was the hero in this situation, Scorpio 45 or the human team operating it? Discuss.On computer screen (using provided frame that chn will use in activity) share-write short newspaper article all about Scorpio 45 & the dramatic rescue. Model correct layout using newspaper features. Chn should suggest a suitable headline, tagline & caption for an imported image of the robot. Discussuse of language to suit story and audience: dramatic, excited, etc. Explain to chn that they will now create their own newspaper report about a “heroic” robot. The hall of fame includes Deep Drone, Dante II and Nomad Rover as well as those studied below…

DK Eyewitness p22. Robots are used to fight fires, look underwater and handle dangerous objects like unexploded bombs. Take each of these situations. Ask chn why a robot is ideal for each role? (Robots can be rebuilt! They don’t need air to breathe! They can cope with heat! They can be made smaller!) Look at websites showing rescue robots at work using internet links (see session resource). A particularly useful one is www.youtube.com: take a look and search for “Packbot” then watch the movie of him climbing the stairs. He was used to search the Twin Towers in New York, September 11th 2001. The link to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9653322/ also provides a lovely image & some background information on how a robot was used to search a pyramid in Egypt.

Chn use ICT & information books to find out more about a particular type of rescue robot. Taking notes & printing images from what they have found, chn then create an information page using the writing frame for a class book (session resource). They should include a printed or drawn image of their robot, which can be labelled. Each child should also highlight why it is appropriate to use the robot rather than a human in this situation. Take a look at pagesproduced in session. Chn share examples of where rescue robots were used, in prep for next session. Highlight benefits of using robots in dangerous or inaccessible situations. Show images of key robots & seeif chn have learned any of their names!

Read the News! Encourage chn to read out sections of clearly written newspaper articles. Why was the robot more successful than a human rescue/search? Who really got the praise? Can there be “ robotic heroes”? Discuss.
