    Written  Poems

The  reason  I  chose  to  have  biking  the  subject  of  my  Haiku  is  because  usually  when   your  biking  you  are  riding  through  nature  and  that’s  what  haikus  are  meant  to  be   about  is  nature.  The  reason  I  chose  the  Kigo  to  be  “leaves”  is  because  it  tells  the   reader  that  the  poem  is  based  in  fall  and  fall  is  a  season.  The  reason  I  chose  the  Kireji   to  not  be  a  word  is  because  I  could  not  think  of  a  good  cutting  word  for  the  poem.

Paul.D

The  reason  I  chose  to  write  this  for  my  Free  is  because  I  really  like  basketball.  The   reason  I  did  not  put  any  literary  elements  in  my  poem  is  because  I  thought  it  would   not  convey  my  message  the  way  I  wanted  it  to  be  read.  The  reason  I  like  playing   basket  ball  is  because  its  it’s  the  time  that  I  get  to  hang  out  with  my  dad  at  night   because  during  the  summer  months  I  don’t  get  to  see  him  much  because  that  is  his   busy  time  for  his  work.

Paul.D

The  reason  I  chose  to  write  my  Sonnet  about  building  is  because  Sonnets  are  usually   love  poems  and  I  have  always  loved  building.  The  reason  I  did  not  put  any  literary   elements  in  my  poem  is  because  I  thought  it  would  not  convey  my  message  the  way   I  wanted  it  to  be  read.  The  reason  I  like  building  is  because  its  my  me  time.  the   reason  its  my  me  time  is  because  whenever  I’m  building  I’m  in  my  room  playing   Minecraft  on  my  iPod  or  I’m  in  the  computer  room  doing  the  same  thing  on  the   computer  or  I’m  downstairs  in  the  basement  playing  Lego.

Paul.D

The  reason  I  chose  to  write  this  for  my  Concrete  is  because  I  really  like  Lego.   Another  reason  I  chose  to  write  my  Concrete  poem  on  Lego  is  I  could  make  the   poem  look  like  a  Lego  brick.  The  reason  I  did  not  put  any  literary  elements  in  my   poem  is  because  I  thought  it  would  not  convey  my  message  the  way  I  wanted  it  to  be   read.

Paul.D

The  reason  I  chose  to  write  this  for  my  Free  is  because  I  really  like  swimming.  The   reason  I  did  not  put  any  literary  elements  in  my  poem  is  because  I  thought  it  would   not  convey  my  message  the  way  I  wanted  it  to  be  read.  The  reason    I  like  swimming   is  because  it  is  a  fun  activity  and  because  I  get  to  compete  in  and  train  for   competitions.

The  reason  I  chose  this  poem  was  because  it  says  anything  is  possible.  It  implies  the   simple  aabb  rhyming  but  it  has  a  deeper  meaning  than  just  a  poem.  In  the  last  three   line  it  says  “Then  listen  close  to  me-‐/Anything  can  happen  child,/ANYTHING  can   be.”.  I  think  that  it  is  telling  you  to  listen  to  your  heart  and  not  to  anyone  who  tells   you  otherwise.  It  says  that  when  everybody  is  against  you  stand  up  for  what  you   believe.  I  think  that  you  should  “Listen  to  the  MUSTN’TS”  and  try  to  prove  them   wrong.  I  think  the  author  puts  some  words  into  capitals  because  those  are  the  words   he  wants  to  emphasize  such  as:  MUSTN’TS,  DON’T’S,  SHOULDN’TS,  IMPOSSIBLES,   WON’TS,  NEVER  HAVES,  and  ANYTHING.  I  think  that  tone  switches  from  negative  to   positive  at  the  end.  For  the  first  5  lines  it  is  negative  but  for  the  last  3  it  does  a  turn   and  is  positive  “Then  listen  close  to  me-‐/Anything  can  happen  child,/ANYTHING  can   be.”.

The  reason  I  chose  this  poem  was  because  I  think  that  it  really  says  how  you  know   when  you  love  someone  and  you  would  do  anything  for  them.  I  think  the  tone  for   this  is  happy.  The  reason  I  say  this  is  because  it  sounds  happy.  It  also  has  a  simple   aabb  rhyming  scheme.  I  think  that  rhyming  scheme  helps  the  poem  flow  better  and   makes  it  easier  to  understand  and  read.  I  couldn’t  find  any  metaphors  or  similes  in   this  piece.  But  I  did  find  a  some  symbolism.  Throughout  the  poem  he  describes  his   love  as  an  angel  and  the  light  of  his  life.

The  reason  I  chose  this  poem  was  because  I  thought  it  really  explains  how  he  is   alone  and  no  one  really  understands  him.  In  the  end  of    line  1  and  the  beginning  for   line  2  it  really  shows  this  because  it  says  “I  have  not  been/As  others  were”.  It  also   show’s  that  he  thinks  differently  from  other  people.  I  couldn’t  find  any  similes  in  this   piece.  There  was  a  few  metaphors  though.  In  line  11  It  says  “From  ev’ry  depth  of   good  and  ill”.  It  shows  that  he  is  different  in  many  ways  not  just  one.  Its  shows  that   he  prefers  solitude  and  loneliness.    Through  out  the  piece  there  is  a  simple  aabb   rhyming  scheme.  I  think  the  rhyming  scheme  helps  the  rhythm  poem  flow  better.   Another  metaphor  is  in  line  9  when  he  says  “Then  in  my  childhood—in  the  dawn”.   The  reason  I  think  that  this  is  a  comparison  is  because  the  author  is  comparing   childhood  and  dawn.  I  think  this  comparison  works  because  childhood  is  seen  as  the   dawn  of  your  life.  I  think  the  tone  of  the  piece  is  dark  and  gloomy.  The  reason  I  think   this  is  because  in  line  6  he  wrote  “My  sorrow—I  could  not  awaken”.  It  also  seems   that  he  is  always  alone  in  the  poem.  I  think  this    because  in  line  14  he  says  “From  the   red  cliff  of  the  mountain—  ”.  I  think  this  symbolizes  aloneness  because  it  is  a  very   isolated  area.

The  reason  I  chose  this  poem  was  because  I  think  it  really  speaks  to  the  reader.  It   uses  a  simple  abab  rhyming  scheme.  I  think  the  tone  it  is  conveying  is  a  happy  praise   to  night.  Throughout  the  poem  the  poet  is  describing  it  to  make  the  night  sound  as  if   it  was  a  person.  Like  in  line  “I  felt  her  presence”  he  is  using  a  metaphor  in  this  line.  I   think  that  the  tone  in  this  is  a  happy,  uplifting  poem.  The  reason  I  think  that  is   because  he  uses  words  like  “best-‐beloved”.  I  also  think  that  a  side  tone  is  peace,  the   reason  I  think  that  is  because  he  uses  the  word  peace  and  it  is  a  very  peaceful  poem.   I  also  like  how  in  the  beginning  he  writes  in  a  language  that  I  am  not  familiar  with.  I   am  not  sure  what  it  means  and  I  have  not  found  any  translations  for  it.  But  I  think   that  it  adds  a  mysterious  touch  to  the  poem.

The  reason  I  chose  this  poem  was  because  I  think  that  it  is  a  very  powerful  poem   that  comes  out  of  Greek  mythology.  I  couldn’t  really  find  a  rhyming  scheme.  The   rhyming  scheme  that  I  did  find  was  very  weird.  It  was  AABCCDEFGHHG.  There  is  no   pattern  or  anything.  But  seeing  as  it  was  written  by  Shakespeare  it  probably  rhymed   in  his  time.  There  wasn’t  any  similes  or  metaphors  in  this  piece  or  anything  like  that.   I  think  that  this  poem  communicates  joy  and  happiness  because  its  got  a  happy  tone   to  it.

Part  D

The  reason  I  chose  these  poems  was  because  they  really  connect  to  my  identity.  My   written  poems  describe  my  favorite  activities  like  my  sonnet  for  building  and  my   haiku  for  biking  and  others  for  basketball  and  swimming.  For  my  chosen  poems  I   chose  3  of  them  for  scenery  and  2  of  them  for  others.  The  reason  I  chose  my  written   poems  to  be  about  my  favorite  activities  is  because  I  can  say  what  I  wanted  to  say   about  them  like  how  for  my  sonnet  about  building.       For  the  others  the  reason  I  chose  them  for  scenery  is  because  I  spend  a  lot  of  my   year  out  of  the  city  and  in  the  winter  in  California.  I  usually  spend  my  summers  in   the  Okanogan.  There  is  usually  a  lot  of  beautiful  scenery  in  the  Okanogan  and  on  the   Hawaiian  island’s.  I’ve  been  to  Maui  a  couple  of  times  and  there  is  always  nice   scenery  there.       The  reason  I  chose  to  have  activity’s  as  one  of  my  subtopics  is  because  they  are  an   important  thing  in  my  life.  Activity's  like  swimming  and  building  and  basketball   mean  a  lot  to  me  because  they  are  fun  to  do  and  they  are  challenging  when  I  work   hard  at  them  because  the  harder  I  work,  the  more  skills  you  are  introduced  to.   Whenever  I  want  to  do  one  of  these  activity's  I  can  just  go  and  do  it  because  I  have   access  to  all  of  them  through  our  membership  at  the  Calgary  Winter  Club  and  in  my   house.  And  when  I  want  to  go  biking  I  can  just  go  down  to  the  river  and  ride  along   there.
