Vignette Tuesday, 8 October, 13

My Name (Vignette) My name is Lucas, but I like to go by the name Luke for short. My name isn’t as common as you’d think. Its made its debut in some pretty great titles, but not many people around the world carry my name on their shoulders. The name Luke originated in Latin and can mean that it is a person from Lucania (A region in Italy.) My name means Light as well which may symbolize my common roles of leadership, like I am a reliability for most people. This truly strengthens my pride and confidence. I think it has a nice ring to it and it definitely makes up for my last name: Vodopija. Not too great right? Well at least my first name is decent because there were a few names that were thought before Luke, such as Liam and Levi. All of them starting with the letter L. At least I got a cool name that gave me many nicknames. With the name Luke I have been branded Luke Skywalker, Luke the Gospel writer, and even the famous Croatian soccer player Luka Modric. On the topic of Croatia, I happen to be from Croatia on both sides of my family. My grandfather who fought in the war, had unfortunately died of cancer before my birth. This was the inspiration for my middle name: Slavko. The name Slavko translates in english to Sam and it surely makes me feel special in my own way. It is a great and respectful tribute to my grandfather and I am Luke Slavko Vodopija. When people hear my name I can only assume what they’d think of it. I already know that if I had a different name I would probably be a different person. My name has already given me so many titles and things that I enjoy to this day. I guess that is the reason why we can’t see some people with any other name. This is why I love and appreciate my name very much, even if I may be called Luke the Nuke or Puke or Fluke. My name gave me a liking to the letter L in general. It made a few of my favourite characters throughout my life so special to me. Fictional characters such as Link from Legend of Zelda, Luigi from the Super Mario Bros, Legolas of Lord of the Rings, even Lucas himself   from Earthbound. Most of the greatest and most well known characters in the world were just listed. I guess even things so little as the letter L can shape a person just as it did to me. All in all my name means everything to me and it will continue to inspire me to move forwards and obviously remind me that my father is an evil Sith lord. Even if my name may sound grounded or fast and easy, it still has a great story behind it. I honestly would never change my name even if I was given the chance. But I guess if I could change my name to anything, it would definitely be to Caboose.

My Personal Response

My entire Anthology has been reflecting my true self in many ways. It shows a lot of my personality subliminally and sometimes obviously. A lot of the poems have been about my personal beliefs and opinions. Things such as bitter truths and being two-faced, even about true colours. All of these I am quite passionate about. These are all carrying larger meanings when looked at from all angles. The power in them is very strong and so deep that I honestly was not able to see the bottom. In “Just a Man,” there was quite a dark and bitter truth being hidden in its depths. It was the fact that it was kind of disintegrating hope and making life seem that more depressing. Unfortunately it is true in some but not many occasions. “My Identity” covers true colours and learning to understand someone for who they really are. Not what they look like. In another corner of my personality is my abstract side. During my time writing “This wondrous Activity,” I decided to make it seem childish but with a final meaning that would definitely make the reader think about its true understanding. I set a tone of melancholy through out my poem of the “Autumn Winds” to prepare the reader for the coming season. It seemed appropriate for the anthology and fit great. While on the topic of seasons, “How did it get so late so soon” was a poem signifying the speed of summer, and how the most enjoyable things evaporate just as fast as they appear. The most unknown part people may seem to be unaware of is my passion for fantasy, great stories and intense action. Unforgettable concepts seem to always captivate me because of my attraction to originality. Being inspired by adventures from The Hunger Games to things such as Breaking Bad. As long as it tells a decent story I will enjoy it. This was my inspiration for “Creatures of the Deep” and “Fly for the Feast.” To me they both told stories with meanings that are very fun to explore and dig through. One was a story of a practiced sacrifice for the good of a species. Then the second story a warning to those who tend to dwell in to gloom of the seas. These two stories were very exciting to both write and final share with the audience, but before I could release them, I had to create my take on a love story. My Shakespearian sonnet had to be a love poem and ended up with a cherry on top that contained a secret ingredient I liked to call surprise. This element was the entire point and climax to this story that hopefully created a pensive mood to the reader. As you may have inferred, yes it was “The Swirl of a Lifetime” and to those who read through it all the way I do owe you my gratitude. As my response concludes I wish thou farewell. Until next time, signed Luke Vodopija
