Message from Rose

2008 is an important year for Asian Americans. With the Beijing Olympics and warming relations over the Taiwan Straits and the Korean peninsula, Americans, and indeed the world, are paying added attention to the future of Asia.

The Miss Asian America Pageant continues its legacy as a bridge between the Asian American community and our nation as we educate our communities of our shared cultural heritage and provide a positive image to all Americans as the face of Asian America.

Today over 15 million Americans are descended from Asia and we make great strides every day in making our country a more diverse and better place. Our sponsors, some of the leading Asian American entrepreneurs, testify to the economic power our community plays and the Miss Asian America Pageant thanks all our supporters for their commitment to our scholarship and leadership programs. In the past few years, economic ties with Asia, in particular India and Korea through various trade agreements have further strengthened the competitiveness of our community in a globalizing world.

The next Miss Asian America will be an important voice for our community. America remains a hopeful place in large part because of the youthful ideas we all bring to the table. In supporting the next generation of Asian American women tonight, we are helping all of our inspiring contestants to lift up their voices and advance our community. Their platforms are wide and expansive but they all point to one thing: a commitment to this country and the world. Many of our forefathers came to this country fleeing oppression and our contestants across the years have included immigrants and descendents of the Boat People of Vietnam, daughters of Cambodian refugees fleeing the killing fields, and the survivors of the Cultural Revolution. We can remedy the struggles of our community and by playing a more influential voice in highlighting the horrors of Burmese suppression or North Korean hunger happening today. Our contestants tonight will help highlight these issues and be a voice for a better tomorrow.

Tonight’s celebration reflects the diversity, talent, and success of Asian America and I thank you for your support, especially sponsors and my loyal friends – staff and volunteers who make this event possible. Your ability to meet challenges and provide much-needed time and energy is key to the success of this organization. In particular, I owe my gratitude to our 2007-2008 court – Louise Wu, Tiffani Mah, Ayushka Sing Gharib, Amy Chu, Amy Ng, Seayoon Jeong, Ilyssa Lu, Aprileen Coh, Anna Lisa Matias, and Vi Ngo. May you continue your good work as ambassadors of the Miss Asian America Organization.

Queen’s Farewell Message

I can’t believe that it was just a year ago I was crowned the honorable title of Miss Asian America 2007-2008. Ever since that magical moment, it has been a year full of accomplishments, challenges, rewarding experiences, defining moments and moments defined. As a former Miss Teen Chinatown 2001, Miss Chinatown USA 2006, and now Miss Asian America 2007-2008, this year holds a special place in my heart. The Miss Asian America pageant is one of the classiest pageants I have ever participated in and it is the only pageant that I have been a part of that focused on the importance of the experience itself; not solely on the outcome. It was truly a bonding experience with the contestants and the volunteers where even after the whole pageant was over, I felt I had gained a new family, the Miss Asian America family.

Throughout my reign, I was invited to cultural festivals, New Years parades, and community events that support the voice of Asian Americans in our communities such as the CBC (Citizens for a Better Community) Annual Gala and the APAPA forum in Sacramento to raise awareness about voter education. At the APAPA event, I was honored to meet the founder of the organization, Mr. CC Yin. I was also invited as a special guest to a number of red carpet events including the Viet Model Project and the Asian Excellence Awards. In April, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Taiwan as a goodwill ambassador visiting a number of distinguished dignities such as the Taiwan Tourism Bureau Deputy Director General, the Taipei County Governor, the Tainan Mayor, and Director Lee Kang to name a few. I was also invited to speak at a number of top universities in Taiwan. Upon my return, the City Council and the Mayor of Fremont awarded me with a Proclamation acknowledging the work I have done within my community.

To the Miss Asian America family – Rose, Mommy Penny, Janice, Vince, Amy, Kevin, Jeff, and all the volunteers, thank you for your kindness, dedication, and commitment to the pageant; this has been an unforgettable year for me. To Rose, thank you for your vision and being a leader and role model to me and Asian women everywhere. Thank you to all my family and relatives for being my biggest fans and always being there for me through all my endeavors; to Keith, Lisa, and Studio 10 Dance for cheering me on through every new journey; to Hector for opening my eyes and always telling me to “make the impossible possible”; to Mr. Ken Yeung and Prince of Peace Enterprises for your constant prayers and belief in my cause; and to my Heavenly Father, thank you for all my challenges and blessings, I know everything happens for a reason. With out all of you, my dreams would never have become a reality.

As a former Miss Teen Chinatown 2001, Miss Chinatown USA 2006, and now Miss Asian America 2007-2008, I must say that I am extremely honored to be one of the very few women in the nation to hold this coveted title. As a former Miss Teen Chinatown 2001, Miss Chinatown USA 2006, and now Miss Asian America 2007-2008, The Miss Asian America pageant is truly one of a kind and one that reflects the utmost beauty, elegance and class of the Asian American culture. This title has been a stepping stone in my growth as an individual, as a leader in my community, and it has opened my eyes to know that as long as one person has a vision and a goal, all things are possible.

With this title, I have learned that as an Asian American woman, I have the power and ability to be a change in this world. I now know what it truly means to be a leader and to stand up for what is moral and just. I have learned that being a public servant does not end after my reign is up, but is my stepping stone as I continue fighting for justice in our community. As my year comes to a close, I am excited for the new adventures that I will face for this is not the end of my journey; it is only the beginning.
