FEDERATION OF STUDENTS STUDENT EXECUTIVES

Serving, empowering, and representing the students of the University of Waterloo.

Coming to the University of Waterloo is an exciting time in life because it provides you with the opportunity to shape your own path to success in a variety of ways. No two experiences are the same. No one perspective can capture the whole story. This difference in perspective is what allows the University of Waterloo to reinvent itself every year. Yet, this is not done solely by the University administration, but by entrepreneurs (students) that see the world as a moldable environment to change with their own vision and skills.

President

pres@feds.ca | @UWFedsPres

My name is David Collins, I’m the President of Feds and I hope that you become an entrepreneur with us this year. Feds exists to help you shape the University into a place that allows you to thrive inside and outside classes, and your input as to what our University environment should look like to make that a reality is invaluable. I’m your Vice President Internal for the 2013-2014 year! What does the VP Internal do you might ask? I’m pretty much in charge of fun on campus. The Internal role is responsible for over 200 student-run clubs, six student services and nine faculty specific societies. We do whatever we can to meet the needs of students. Think we’re missing something? You can start your own club! All of our clubs are started by students, for students.

Vice President

vpin@feds.ca | @UWFedsVpin

As the Vice President of a student-run organization (Feds), it is my job to speak to and for the students. I am here all year to make sure your voice is heard. I believe in student opportunity, and I believe that students have the ability to make Feds into something even better than it currently is. My office is always open to students, whether you have ideas, questions or just want to chat.

Feds is the only organization that exists on campus to ensure you have the best student experience possible, and I’m excited to be part of it once again.

VP Education

As the Vice President Education, my role is to ensure that your academic experience is affordable, accessible and high quality. I do that by working both on and off campus; I represent you to University administration and all levels of government, including the City of Waterloo, the province of Ontario, the federal government of Canada and all of the local politicians in between. I work to bring a unified student voice to our governments so we can make positive changes to our university and education system.

vped@feds.ca | @UWFedsVped There are tons of ways to get involved in improving the student experience through the VP Education portfolio – all we need is passionate people like you! I am super excited for the upcoming year! As your VPOF, I oversee all commercial services including The Bombshelter Pub, Campus Bubble, Wasabi!, International News, Feds Used Books and The Dispensary; administer the health and dental plan and oversee the marketing, accounting and IT departments of the organization. Now that Feds has taken over management of the Student Life Centre, I will also be overseeing this transition and reaching out to students about the use of this space moving forward. From Welcome Week events to exam relief puppies, we are always looking for new ways to enhance vpof@feds.ca | @UWFedsVpof students’ experiences on campus! If you have any questions or would just like to learn more about what I do, my door is always open.

FEDERATION OF STUDENTS GETTING INVOLVED WITH FEDS

Volunteer for one of the many positions available through Feds or simply participate to enrich your experience at Waterloo.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Federation of Students is constituted as a corporation without share capital under the Ontario Corporations Act. As with most corporations, the Federation of Students maintains a nine member Board of Directors that works with our Students’ Council. The Board of Directors meets on behalf of the corporation’s shareholders (undergraduate students at Waterloo) largely to discuss and guide the financial and contractual affairs of the corporation, or under unusual and emergency circumstances, when Students’ Council is unable to make a decision on a particular matter. The Board of Directors is elected and ratified each Winter term at the General Meeting of the Corporation, with the following members: David Birnbaum, Nikki Domanski, Jesse McGinnis, Luke McIntosh, and Prashant Kumar Patel.

STUDENTs’ COUNCIL The purpose of Students’ Council is to uphold the goals of the Federation of Students under its Charter and bylaws, and to establish policies of the Corporation. Students’ Council is made up of representatives from all faculties, disciplines and affiliated colleges, with the number of seats in each constituency being calculated by a formula based on enrolment. In general, these positions are elected each Winter term. Council provides a representative forum for student input into Federation activities, appoints Commissioners and designates the Committees of Students’ Council. It also administers and oversees the budgeting of membership fees. Committees of Council deal with other areas including administration of clubs, funding for activities and projects, budgeting, education policy (local, provincial, federal) elections, referenda and more. Non-voting members of Students’ Council include: the Speaker, the Secretary, Chairs of Committees of Council who are not already a member of Council, the Presidents of the recognized student societies, the Presidents of all federated and affiliated Colleges and Residence Councils, the President of the University and all past Presidents of the Federation of Students. If you are interested in applying for a vacant position on Council, please read the Council Package for general information. During the election period you may submit a Council Nomination Form to the Research and Policy Officer (policy@feds.ca). More information will be available on Feds.ca at that time.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE HOW WE CAN HELP YoU

There are many types of financial aid available in the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office (SAFA). The increasing cost of post-secondary education can be a barrier to some students as they pursue their goals. Financial assistance programs offer students an opportunity to pursue their education.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships and awards are generally based on academic achievement but may include other selection criteria such as extracurricular involvement, demonstrated leadership or participation in a specific activity. Undergrad award opportunities are advertised each term on the SAFA website.

BURSARIES Bursaries are based primarily on financial need but may include other selection criteria such as extracurricular involvement or leadership. Bursaries are meant to supplement, not replace, students' primary sources of funding such as OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) or other provincial financial assistance, employment income, and parental/spousal contributions.

ONTARIO STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provides eligible students with various types of assistance based on financial need. Detailed information is available on the OSAP website: https://osap.gov.on.ca

WORK STUDY PROGRAM The work-study program is designed to provide part-time on-campus work experience for full-time students who require assistance in covering their education-related costs.
