nother year has past and no year has been more eventful for Velvet than 2012. Big changes have occurred in the appearance of the magazine, but the message remains the same: localised content with an international appeal that covers the best in fashion, beauty, lifestyle and travel to give the Velvet reader a uniquely insightful experience to the best of everything that is available to you. This issue is a double for December/ January and showcases the things that we have loved, and will continue to love, this year and into the next in fashion, beauty, culture and style, whilst at the same time offering a comprehensive guide to gifting (A-Z Guide to Gifting, page 73). Where fashion begins, beauty follows and it is only fair that what we do for one, we should do for the other, so Simone Gannon, Velvet’s newly appointed Deputy Editor and professionally trained Makeup Artist (in a previous incarnation), has collated the definitive guide to our beauty most wanted (page 118) - products that have caught our eye and are the best of the available best. December is an important time for the UAE as on the 2nd we celebrate our

41st National Day. Young though we may seem as a nation and on paper, we have come leaps and bounds in reality, and growing with more vigour each and every year. We commemorate our founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in our new ‘Icon’ section (page 160) that acts as a platform for celebrating those people whom we respect, regardless of race, culture and industry. As it is the end of the year, we’re making our New Year resolutions and looking forward to what’s in store for us in 2013. Five stylish industry experts share their aspirations and inspirations for the upcoming year in our Look To The Future feature (page 60), and we sat down for an interview with Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 to discuss what’s in store for them and their upcoming spring ’13 collection (Two’s Company, page 50). Another issue crammed full of ideas, anecdotes and exclusive information to keep you going until our next issue in February, have a brilliant end to 2012 and an excellent start to 2013. See you next year!

kate moss in marc jacobs

Ever since the Olympics when the Brit supermodels descended on the Olympic Park in effervescent gilded gowns, gold was set to be the key colour of glamorous winter eveningwear. If that show of molten pleasure wasn’t enough already, Kate Moss followed her decadent debut in show-stopping gown, this time in gold lamé Marc Jacobs for the launch of her book Kate: The Kate Moss Book, strongly affirming there is no other way to spend a festive dirham. Two dresses, one book, equals three gilty pleasures.

Thoughts On… Muscat Fashion Week

DIBAJ’S Designers Aida & Afaf

Rafia Helal bin Drai, designer of Mauzan gives her point of view What enticed you to join Muscat Fashion Week?

London, Paris, New York, Milan…Muscat? 2013 is set to be the year that puts Muscat Fashion Week on the map This January, Muscat is set to become the region’s hub for Middle Eastern fashion as Muscat Fashion Week begins. Around 23 of the region’s most reputable design talents will show their latest collections to an international crowd of fashion editors, buyers and journalists over the three day event, being held at the stunning architectural triumph that is the French Embassy. The invitation only event has an invited list of designers that reads like the who’s who in fashion of the Arab world. Endamage, Dibaj and Nawal Al Hooti from Oman, Amina Al Jassim and Razan Alazzouni from Saudi Arabia, Hany El

Behairy from Eqypt, Krikor Jabotian and Sarah Baadarani from Lebanon, as well as designers from Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Bahrain and favourites from the UAE including Kanzi, Mauzan and Khulood Thani. The rumour mill has been churning out a number of exciting firsts for the fashion week, that if proved true could mean the accessories for the shows will be designed by a prolific international footwear designer. Watch this space. Muscat Fashion Week will take place 15th – 17th January, 2013 in Oman.

Showing in Muscat will ideally introduce Mauzan to the wider Omani market, as at this stage Mauzan isn’t stocked in Oman. We’re also looking forward to showing MAUZAN Mauzan to the numerous international buyers and fashion editors who are making the trip to Muscat Fashion Week. What do you feel about the other designers involved?

I’m looking forward to showing my collection alongside other Arabic designers. I think that we as Arabic designers are beginning to be more recognised and with a platform like Muscat Fashion Week, we can all look forward to be recognised and celebrated together. With an already international number of journalists due to attend, what are your hopes for Mauzan?

Mauzan already has many international clients and supporters. But this is something that we would like to grow and build on. It would be fabulous for Mauzan to become even more appreciated on an international level.

Old Romanticism at Nina Ricci Proving that vintage pieces continue to inspire, Artistic Director for Nina Ricci, Peter Copping has created 8 shamelessly romantic, family heirloom inspired necklaces for fall/winter 2012. Using a mixture of delicate crystal strands and colourful gems, Copping has shown yet again that old romanticism is still as covetable as it ever was. Three of these inimitable creations have been uniquely reproduced in limited edition exclusively for Nina Ricci boutiques in Paris and Dubai. Nina Ricci is available at The Dubai Mall.

New in Bloomingdales: Sandro Homme The Parisian label long known for it’s refined and modern menswear is now available at Bloomingdales Dubai. On the rails right now, the Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection is a perfect example of the labels beautiful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Comprising of three different themes, the A/W Collection is a homage to classic silver screen looks of the past; sharply tailored outerwear, sumptuous cable knit sweaters and subtle leather details abound – timeless must-haves for every fashion forward man.

Carmen Borgonovo joins Senior Style Editor of British Harper’s Bazaar, Carmen Borgonovo has been announced as’s new Fashion Director, following in the footsteps of other print editors to digital, Lucy Yeomans and Jeremy Langmead. Carolina Herrera’s elegant Resort ’13 collection is a frisson of abstract nautical-inspired prints. Says the designer of her new look, “what better time to introduce new lines, new colours than in a Resort collection. Fashion is sometimes starved for colour and amusement, but not here. This collection is a story in fabrics and an expression of femininity and charm through colour and silhouette. You must find some element of fun in every piece; otherwise the concept of ‘Resort’ is lost entirely.” All agreed? All aboard.

He’s such a great guy.” The ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein fragrance itself is a heady contrast of freshness and warmth with masculine notes of crisp spice, warm cognac and sensual woods, something that appeals to Stone’s own fragrance preference for the men in her life, revealing that “the type of scent I like most on a man is just a natural manly kind of scent.” Unapologetically masculine, fatally attractive, just like Skarsgård himself.

Q&A 5 Minutes with the creators of ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein, Honorine Blanc Firmenich and Pierre Negrin

Clockwise Top Creators of ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein. Honorine Blanc Firmenich, Pierre Negrin.

What does ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein represent for you?

ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein represents a new signature of addictive sensuality for men.

How would you describe this fragrance in your own words?

What was the initial brief from the marketing team?

Could you explain what each key ingredient brings to the fragrance?

The initial brief was to create a distinctive signature that is warm and addictive.

Cardamom –a modern, sexy freshness Cognac –a liquid, addictive sensuality Agarwood–a rich, masculine confidence

What were the sources of inspiration to create this fragrance?

The texture of dark woods and the addiction of rich cognac were sources of inspiration for ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein. According to you, does this fragrance have similarities with the existing Calvin Klein fragrances?

Yes, ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein possesses an undeniable sexiness and seductive signature found within nearly all Calvin Klein fragrances.

Masculine, intriguing and seductive.

Are there any notes or combination of notes in particular that make this fragrance contemporary?

Agarwood, with its rich woodiness, possesses a modern transparency allowing it to be luxuriously sexy whilst not being overwhelming.

Is there any interesting or unusual raw material in the fragrance?

Why were the alcoholic beverages rum and cognac chosen for this fragrance, what do they add?

Cognac –leverage internal IFF talents, flavour translations allows us to smell tastes and smell textures. Beyond perfume, the cognac element is compelling, evocative and uniquely edible/addictive. Rum –under specific conditions of temperature and pressure, extractions carried out at low temperatures preserve the natural olfactive profile of original material, in this case rum (derived from sugar cane).

Flavours offer new, unexpected textures in fragrance, which is becoming more and more important in today’s market with so many fragrance launches. In the case of ENCOUNTER Calvin Klein, the spirit notes create a distinct structure within the fragrance, direct in experience and easily recognized due to their connection with the flavour palette. The end result is an enhanced emotional experience anyone can access. VELVET / December – January Issue 15

A million Swarovski crystals, 40 of the best bodies in the world, 1lb of hair extensions per girl and a glitter tent. Ruby Warrington gets a backstage pass to the Victoria’s Secret show

ackstage at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, I’m inside the “glitter tent”, the stuff of a 15-year-old boy’s dream. Out there dozens of the world’s most amazonian beauties are being primped and preened for what is generally acknowledged to be the biggest fashion show on earth. In here — a 10ft x 8ft curtained-off corner of the room — three of those models are stripped down to the teeny-tiniest of thongs to be spritzed with sticky body glitter. To say the atmosphere is intense would be something of an understatement. “Oh my God, that really is ridiculously glittery,” says one of the “tinsel ninjas”, surveying the arc of body paint she has just applied. “Oooooh, but it’s soooo pretty,” exclaims Doutzen Kroes. Ninja: “OK, if you’re happy. Now turn around so I can do the top of your butt.”

Later that afternoon, encased in some of the most over-the-top creations ever classed as lingerie, Kroes and her gleaming curves will strut their stuff in one of two live versions of the show. The best bits are then spliced together to be aired on American TV on December 6, and globally in 184 other countries. The first show took place at the New York Plaza Hotel in 1995 (introduced by Stephanie Seymour), and since then it has become an annual event that’s right up there with the Oscars. The Victoria’s Secret circus has travelled to Miami, Los Angeles and Cannes and has grown to become a year-round production that employs more than 1,000 people and now costs an estimated £7.5m to stage. Justin Timberlake famously performed on the catwalk in 2006 —

singing Sexy Back, natch — and since then, Katy Perry and Kanye West are just some of the names to get involved. Tonight it’s the turn of Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars (“between them they have 140m Facebook and Twitter followers” the show’s executive producer, Edward Razek, loves to remind me). But, let’s face it, it’s all about the Angels. Beyond the glitter tent, they glide through the assembled throng of press and international production crews like so many satin-clad birds of paradise, in hot-pink robes that reveal acres of toned, tanned thigh, atop towering Nicholas Kirkwood heels (he did all the shoes for the show). Hair in rollers, tapping away at their BlackBerries, they move between the different make-up stations and circle the never-ending buffet, occasionally going in for a grape or a Diet Coke. It’s like being in with the flamingos at London Zoo — you can’t stop gawping. Of course, some of them have become

household names. Miranda Kerr is popular this year; you can tell where she’s sitting from the flashbulbs that are constantly going off, like popping candy, in her face. Alessandra Ambrosio, who will walk in the £1.6m, diamond-encrusted Floral Fantasy bra (“Finally, after 11 years,” she blazes in the promo video for the show), has by far the biggest entourage. Then there’s Kroes, the international face of L’Oréal, and Isabeli Fontana, the most bootylicious of the Brazilian contingent. The show is credited with putting the likes of Heidi Klum and Gisele Bundchen on the map. I plonk myself down next to Lily Donaldson, one of the three British girls — the others are Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne — walking this year. I flash back to my close encounter in the glitter tent — the pressure to look the part must be incredible. “I’m surrounded by Brazilian girls, hellooooo,” she says. A miniscule crease furrows her brow. “It’s a bit like being an athlete. This is the Olympics of modelling.” The Angels are presided over by Razek, who Forbes has called one of the five most important people in the modelling industry. He also casts the show and describes himself as “more like a prosports coach than anything else”. He says the girls BBM him constantly, while he dishes out

VITAL STATISTICS • 28 pairs of wings were worn on the catwalk. • The show used 18 make-up artists, 22 hairstylists and seven manicurists. • The Angels went through 50 bottles of fragranced body lotion. • The average heel height of the models’ Kirkwood shoes was 6in. • Over 1m Swarovski crystals were used to embellish the models’ outfits.

model” camp. Delevingne confesses that she’s been surviving on McDonald’s and pizza for days because of her insane travel schedule, while Dunn tells me her preshow regimen extended to “thinking I should probably be doing some lunges or squats or something. But my outfit [a leather catsuit] actually covers my whole body, so, you know.” Even Donaldson, a veteran with three shows under her Swarovski-encrusted

suspender belt, only stretched to “a few extra Pilates classes”, a regime she favours because “it’s like exercise lying down”. How typically British. When I interviewed In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the National Guard at the New York Armoury (where the show was held) was left without power until Victoria’s Secret shared its generators and mobile phone service, helping to “save lives”. Alessandra Ambrosio’s personal trainer, Leandro Carvalho, earlier this year — “She trusts me because I am Brazilian like her, and in Brazil it is all about ze butt” — he told me stories about midnight workout sessions to maintain the Angels’ signature skinny-but-curvy look: “It is not easy to keep a flat stomach and a curvy butt.” Then there’s up to 20 doses of lemon juice a day — taken like a tequila shot — to help shrink fat cells. He’s the one who helped Alessandra shed 47lb in three months to get show fit following her first pregnancy.

“What can I say?” he told me. “It was the first time she ever took time off and she indulged herself and relaxed, and she ate cake.” The hair gets its own dress rehearsal two days before the event: “We watch how it moves on the runway through the TV monitors, so we know if we need to fill in any gaps,” Pita explains. The night before the show, the celebrity tanner Jimmy Coco (Victoria Beckham’s go-to guy in LA) is on bronzing duty. When it comes to make-up, it’s all about “the glow”, says Tom Pecheux, also the creative make-up director for Estée Lauder, which means little more than “an upgrade” of the girls’ already gorgeous features. “Too much foundation, eyes, lips, it will kill the sexiness,” he says. “The Victoria’s Secret girls are meant to look sexy, but in a nice way.” Or, as Razek puts it, the Angels should look “like the girl next door, but when she just got out of bed. Our girls are healthy girls, it’s a wholesome message. But the notion that nice girls don’t wear lingerie is ridiculous.” He also insists that this whole extravaganza is a production put on by women for women. “Eighty per cent of our customers are women, as is virtually everyone who works in this business.” In fact, I later meet the company’s CEO, Sharen Turney, a ballsy blonde with her own (female) bodyguard in tow. She’s snuck her 18-year-old son into the aftershow party, and there’s Karlie Kloss in front of us, gyrating on the dancefloor to Sexy and I Know It. What’s the betting he reckons he’s got the coolest mum in the world?

There are also plans to open more stores in 2013 on London’s Bond Street, in Brazil and more boutiques in the Middle East. What is it that makes the family owned and run French company such a roaring, global success? The obvious answer would be the accessible price points of what the industry likes to call “affordable luxury,” but that Jean Cassegrain likes to call “contemporary luxury.” The other answers would be their inherited reputation for quality over their 60 year plus life span and the rows of column inches they rack up on a regular basis for their ability to maintain all of the above, whilst remaining timeless and stylish at all times. Perhaps one of the most attention grabbing elements of the maison

over the past years has been the collaboration between designers and artists on various milestone projects, all of which are based on relationships that the house has built organically, rather than being an enforced marketing strategy. “We don’t want these collaborations to become systematic. Some brands over exploit it. We want to keep it natural and based on encounters,” Cassegrain says of the long list of much publicised creative affiliations. The most notable of which have been with controversial British artist Tracey Emin to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Le Pliage, the longstanding relationship with the American fashion designer Jeremy Scott, whose often pop-art inspired bags, now collector’s items, are on sale exclusively at Colette in Paris, and the hugely successful project with Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. Succeeding over all these though has been the clever coalition between the Cassegrains and Kate Moss, the World’s most talked about model and face of countless luxury labels over the years including Longchamp, a relationship that

The kate moss ‘glouster’ bag

began in 2006. In 2010, she launched a line of bags eponymously named Kate Moss for Longchamp, with her own design logo rubbing alongside that of maison. Another organic cultivation ensures Cassegrain. “We met with Kate for our advertising campaigns and got to know her at the photoshoots. My sister discussed a lot with her about products because she is obviously very interested in products and in fashion, and after two or three years they both

felt confident with each other and wanted to do something together.” The hugely popular natural progression is now in its third year, but Cassegrain is doubtful that another icon could make the grade to design a collection like Moss’ any time soon, saying somewhat protectively “the celebrity thing is very difficult - to associate the brand to a celebrity.” The latest face in the always-playful campaigns is a model that is still well known, but who has a less public persona - although she does have over 400,000 followers on Twitter. “It’s a year since Coco Rocha has been the

Longchamp’s new local address in Mall of the Emirates is an elegant edit of their best-selling collections. Le Pliage, of course, takes centre stage with a dedicated wall showcasing its many colours, whilst other popular new season pieces from the Kate Moss for Longchamp and this year’s More is More collections also have pride of place. Also on display is a capsule edit of the ready-to-wear, matching beautifully with the bags, which Cassegrain says “ is useful because as a new season begins and you go to the stores you have the mannequins and you understand the feeling of the season much

Dsquared2’s high energy duo are a fantastical fashion force to be reckoned with. Natascha Hawke reports.

t is, what feels like, an average afternoon in the Dubai Mall, relatively quiet, except for a few Emirati ladies drifting in and out of the luxury emporiums that encircle the Fashion Atrium and the odd tourist or two, map in hand, navigating their way down fashion avenue. Then, in the distance what can only be described as a moving mass of commotion appears, advancing at rapid speed towards the Dsquared boutique. On closer inspection, the two people at the epicentre of this energetic mass of cameras, prs, ridiculously good-looking men (could that be male models?) are instantly distinguishable, if you’re into fashion, as Dean and Dan Caten, the twin brother designers behind the Dsquared label. On arrival at the boutique it takes at least ten minutes before the twins are sat still (or at least sat), ready for their Velvet interview, such is the request for photos. Is it always like is, I wonder. “No, not really” Dan says coyly, although I suspect it’s more out of modesty then truth judging by the almost hysterical atmosphere that surrounds them. As identical twins they are still somewhat

easily distinguishable between one another but like to confuse things with their signature look of dressing the same, and if that’s not enough, finishing one another’s sentences, which makes transcribing this interview and knowing which twin has said what, a particularly difficult task. It doesn’t matter in the end, as they are two parts of the one entity that has now become a globally recognised fashion force, building their brand out of a labour of love, creativity and, clearly, brotherly support. Born in Toronto, the twins now live between London and Milan (“we’re on a plane every Monday and every Friday”), where they moved to work for Versace in the early nineties and now acts as a base for their own company, presenting their bi-annual collections at Milan Fashion Week. The outré style of fashion loving Italians is clearly a big influence on their collections, even when models are dressed down in denim the glamour is ramped up through high maintenance hair and makeup, excessive accessories and buckets of attitude.

For spring/summer 2013 they cite good friend and Italy’s number one “fashion maniac”, editor of Vogue Nippon Anna Dello Russo as an influence. “She actually inspired us for this show because she says ‘go excess, pile it on, pile it on like in the 90s excess, supermodel days.’” An ode to their fashion roots with clear references to the Versace woman of the nineties, the spring 2013 presentation was all leather mini-skirts, lashings of gold chains and porter caps, reminiscent of the era where Gianni’s runway Supermodels ruled. “There were two editorials we had a reference from and, you know, it’s fun. This is what the 90s meant to us. The girls back then they loved fashion.” And what about now? Is it difficult for them to cast girls that can give the personality and attitude that Dsquared is known for? “Today the models don’t maybe even care about it, back in the day they were living it, they weren’t just models, they loved the fashion,” says Dan ruefully as Dean concurs “now it’s their job to put on clothes so they don’t really care to dress up. There are still one or two like Cara (Delevingne) that love fashion, she’s got that same quality: fun, loving fashion.” I mention that she’s had an impressive show season and her star is looking set to shine even brighter to which they say in unison and without a hint of doubt, “she’s going to be the next Kate Moss because she has all those qualities. She’s beautiful.” Despite the lack of models that live and breathe fashion, Dsquared2’s runway shows are productions that require more

than a little personality from those that are selected to walk, being more like theatrical stage musicals than your average catwalk. “It’s kind of like making a film. We enjoy doing that. We build this collection, it has ideas, it has a theme, it has a story, so we want to put that story in a place, give it a sound. We take you on a trip for 12 minutes and we take you some place, have a bit of fun and it sets a mood.” The autumn/winter 2012 show was a High School Musical explosion of energetic prom queens and rockabillys in tapered cigarette jeans, pencil skirts and mohair cardigans with bouffant, beehive hair and sixties feline liner. A softer edged collection than what we’re used to seeing from Dsquared2 but not completely void of controversy when they accessorised their model high school students with cigarettes. “We had the cigarette to make her bad, we got hacked for that actually but it was ok in the end. I understand why – we were promoting cigarettes - but it was a look, making her bad.” The badness of Dsquared2’s sartorial personalities is perhaps what has given them such a strong identity, after all controversy is always a hot topic, but their more recent collections have seen a much more put together aesthetic than perhaps they have previously been known for. “I think with ‘the girl’ we’ve tried to grow her up a bit. Make her a little bit more mature. She’s always fun, always sexy, then there are some sweet little elements,”

explains Dean. photographer and music video director Jean Baptiste Mondino, wore a pair of Dsquared2 jeans on set of his job as Creative Director of Madonna’s music video for ‘Don’t Tell Me’ from her album Music (2000). Spotting Mondino’s deconstructed denims, Madonna demanded she wear them in the cowboy western inspired video. “We’d just done this demolition deluxe raw, American collection and we’d given some jeans to a friend and she said ‘I want to wear those in the video’, so he said ok I’ll get you the contact.” Next thing they knew they had Madonna’s stylist Arianna Phillips on the phone requesting they send a full collection over the following day. From that small introduction they went on to dress her and her dancers for their Music mini-tour, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now a firm celebrity favourite, do Dean and Dan find the power of celebrity as seductive as some of the other luxury brands? “We don’t go hunting them down. We do love them though. It’s

cool to have a cool celebrity wearing your clothes, but it’s also cool to have a kid on the street wearing your clothes,” reiterating that the Dsquared2 girl has a mind of her own when it comes to fashion, rather than following trends or watching what other people are wearing. “She’s individual too, she’s got her own mind, she knows what she wants, knows how she wants to look and will do it in her own way too. Individuality is what’s cool about fashion right now.” As we come to the end of our interview, we discuss the pros and cons of social media and how important it is to their brand to have a presence out there in cyber space. They’ve been told that they can’t have a company Twitter account as they “tweet too much personal stuff, which is what people want to know – it’s funny. I’m a real person and of course I do real things,” Dan says animatedly. “We have to fight for things now, now we’re at a certain level and they’re like ‘you can’t do that now’.” Is that enough to make them stop? “Stop

working? We do have fun and that’s the fun part. If we stop having fun then that’s when we’ll stop doing this.” Judging by the amount of fun we’ve had today sitting in the boutique, we’re in for a long and outrageously eventful Dsquared2 ride. Dsquared2 is located at the Dubai Mall

Party Season Pearls Decorative pearls have made quite an impact this season, moving away from, but not ignoring, a classic string to a luxurious fusion of coloured stones, precious metals and diamond details. On the runway, pearls appeared at Balmain, Mark Fast and, naturellement, at Chanel. A timeless investment, this is a trend to adhere to, adorning rings, necks and even your new season accessories with a bit of Mother Nature’s finest.

Azza Fahmy ‘Nostalgia’ Collection

The culturally rich heritage of Egyptian jeweller Azza Fahmy’s pieces is what gives them such a strong identity and, in turn, a strong following. Her work is informed by ancient Pharaonic and Ottoman civilisations, traditional Egyptian architecture and the artistic history of Islam, combined with her love of colloquial poetry with which she calligraphically scribes her intricate gold and silver collections. Her latest collection ‘Nostalgia’ composed of 28 unique pieces, is now available at Bloomingdale’s in the Dubai Mall.

What the fashion pack are looking forward to in 2013

MADONNA MORGAN Founder and Owner of Maison Sez Boutique

orn in Canada but living in the UAE most of her life, Egyptian/ Lebanese boutique owner Madonna Morgan opened her multi-brand store in Abu Dhabi in March 2011. “I decided to open Maison Sez in Abu Dhabi as I had just moved there from Dubai and felt there was a gap in the market for luxurious Boutique shopping”. Stocking brands like Vivienne Westwood, Rebecca Taylor, Alice and Olivia, Hotel Particulier and Theory, Madonna carefully edits the collection to appeal to Maison Sez’ style conscious customers. “The boutique is all about glamour and elegance, so whether you’re looking for a floor sweeping gown or a simple summer dress you can find it at Maison Sez. We do buy into big trends from time to time but only a few pieces, as we like to see how our customers receive them”. The interior design of Maison Sez is also as talked about as the designer’s pieces they carry. Inspired by the London and Paris homes of famous Russian Ballerina

Tamara Karsavina, the style of the boutique has a distinctly European flair to it, with muted classic colours and dramatic marble flooring set off by sumptuous leather sofas and dark wood paneling. “I based the aesthetic of Maison Sez on the life and style of Tamara Karsavina, she was so inspiring”. When it comes to her own personal

style, Madonna lists Olivia Palermo and Audrey Hepburn as two of her every day style inspirations. “My look veers towards classic and feminine with a playful edge. I own a lot of tulle skirts, which are quite fun. High heels are an absolute essential too”. With 2013 almost upon us, Madonna is excited to see what developments the New Year bring for Maison Sez. “It has been so exciting to see how far Maison Sez has grown over the past year – I only want to strengthen that more and ensure our customers are always happy and keep coming back”. MADONNA’S 2013 HOT LIST What wardrobe additions are you planning to purchase next year?

For Spring 2013, I am definitely looking at monochromatic pieces, sheer light fabrics, lots of patchwork, and pretty feminine ruffled dresses. If there is one piece that I have been lusting over, it is a pair of Vivienne Westwood printed chunky sandals. I am obsessed with high heels so I spotted them as soon as they walked down the runway. Has your head been turned by any of next years trends?

For SS13, I really enjoyed seeing all the ruffled and frilled pieces walk down the runway. They offer a retro feminine elegant vibe that is needed in today’s fashion scene. Alice & Olivia’s collection is top of my list for SS13. I love how they combined primary hues with pastel palettes – super fresh and fun for spring! I also fell in love with the Sass & Bide S13 collection for their play on masculine and feminine cuts.

What trend will you be saying goodbye to in 2013?

I will be absolutely be saying goodbye to peplum pieces. I’ve seen enough of them, and many different variations, to last me a lifetime. Have you made any holiday plans for next year?

My travel schedules always get prebooked for fashion weeks, so that leaves me with very little time to go on a proper holiday. However, my favorite destination to date would have to be Barcelona - it combines my two favourite things I love doing during the summer – laying on the beach and shopping. My all time favourite hotel is the Art Hotel in Barcelona. Will you be making any changes to your beauty routine in 2013?

My beauty routine doesn’t really change. It’s something I have been doing for years now - it consists of removing my make up every night with a great make-up remover, intensive face wash twice a day (first thing in the morning and last thing at night), moisturising eye cream followed by a moisturising day/night cream.

Art Hotel in Barcelona

What beauty products will you continue to use in 2013?

La Prairie eye cream is something I will never stop using, it’s has a beautiful texture and is very gentle on the skin, I highly recommend it. Also, Estee Lauder’s mattifying primer works wonders. An essential addition to any makeup bag, especially when you live in a Middle Eastern climate.

When it comes to fashion buys, Laura is extremely focused. “I literally walk into a shop, do a 15 second scan and if I sense that something might be of interest, I wander in. If not, I move on.” A fan of a capsule wardrobe, plain white t-shirts from Alexander Wang, jeans by Cheap Monday and nude heels by Christian Louboutin make up her basic wardrobe. In her dream fashion life however, it’s a different story. “I would dress head-to-toe in Isabel Marant, Chloe and Celine, with the odd piece of

Zadig and Voltaire cashmere thrown in for good measure.” With 2012 drawing to a close, Laura has many a fond fashion memory of the year gone by that includes “getting my first pair of Topshop Jamie jeans and experiencing a comfort revelation, and hitting Christian Louboutin during the first day of the sale and walking out with two pairs of shoes that I had been eyeing up for months.” Chloe

aura Farrant is a full time digital marketing consultant and part-time fashion and lifestyle blogger. Having moved to Dubai 18 months ago, she now considers herself well and truly settled here. “I still miss London, where I was living before, but daily sunshine and a nice standard of living is pretty hard to beat.” Her fashion blog was born out of her deep love for clothing and accessories. She writes about everything from her latest buys and fashion inspirations to shopping trips and excursions in Dubai. “I am a self-proclaimed shopaholic who always looks for something new. Fashion fills that nicely because seasons change, trends evolve and the shops keep up by churning out new designs weekly.” Laura launched her blog in May 2011, and already has an impressive 6 million views under her cinched belt. But what does she think it is that makes fashion blogs so popular? “Personally, I have always loved seeing how other “real life” people put things together more than admiring celebrities. It’s more attainable and, in turn, more inspiring.”

Are there any restaurants in Dubai you want to try next year that you didn’t get around to this year?

LAURA’S 2013 WISH LIST What are you looking forward to in 2013?

More dinners at Zuma, Le Petite Maison and the Rivington Grill would definitely be appreciated. This doesn’t exactly fit in well with my other plan to be very healthy in 2013 but the way I see it everyone needs to treat themselves now and again and I should apply that theory to myself, right?

I always love the start of a new year. It’s the “start over” that is so appealing and trying to be better and make change is exciting. I want to be healthier, happier and really want to make my blog bigger and better – perhaps a redesign and posting with increasing regularity is on the cards. What’s on your accessory wish list for next year?

I have my eye on quite a few of the trends for Spring/Summer 2013. It’s always an exciting season when you live in Dubai because these trends often define how you look for the rest of the year. I loved the beautiful 60s Silhouettes as seen at Louis Vuitton and Moschino, the animal prints from Erdem and short suits like the ones at Michael Kors. I’ll be heading to Topshop, Reiss, H&M and Zara for a more affordable interpretation.

Have any upcoming fashion trends caught your eye?

I am addicted to Celine handbags – I am sure the staff in the Mall of the Emirates branch get sick of my face – and I would love to add another to my collection, preferably in a bright, obnoxious color. Failing that a Philip Lim Pashli bag in red with gold hardware from Boutique 1 would do very nicely.

What are your travel plans for next year?

I love travelling and would love to spend more time in Asia. I went to Thailand last year for the first time ever and I need to head back and explore the islands. Closer to home, a few weekend breaks at the St Regis Saadiyat Island will definitely be on the schedule. This is one of my favorite places in the UAE and the hotel I recommend to all my friends. What beauty products are you planning to try?

I am so excited that Laura Mercier has finally made it in Dubai – thank you Bloomingdale’s – so I really want to explore her line. Powder-wise, Burberry eye shadows are on my “must try” list. I have spied them at Harvey Nichols and the consistency is perfection. Lastly, Illamasqua nail polishes need some attention. Jo’Mina might be the color that distracts me from getting Gelish – it’s such a beautiful rich lilac.

SASHA SAROKIN Buying Manager of Accessories, NET-A-PORTER

orn and raised in Los Angeles, Sasha Sarokin relocated to London from New York when she joined NET-A-PORTER as Senior Buyer in 2008, having previously worked for Juicy Couture and Scoop. Her current role as Buying Manager of Accessories brought her to Dubai on a flying visit recently. “I’ve loved every minute of the trip here. The UAE is a very important market for Net-a-Porter, our customers here love fashion and are incredibly stylish”. With many abundant trends, brands and styles available in the big wide world of fashion, how does she navigate them all and select the most suitable for Net-A-Porter’s discerning customer? “We’re constantly inspired by the world around us but it really starts at Fashion Week and what’s on the runway and what people are wearing at the shows. We carefully choose products and brands that have a strong emotional draw for our customers”. In addition to trend scouting at the various fashion weeks, a big part of Sasha’s job is to meet with existing and emerging new designers. “I regularly view their latest collections and love discovering something new to wow our customers with. No two days are the same and I thrive on the buzz it gives me”. As for her own personal style, Sasha’s sartorial choices are a tightly edited collection of seasonal favourites with more classic pieces thrown in for good measure. “A beautiful crisp shirt or blazer is essential and I always complete my look with fun accessories.” At the

conclusion of her Dubai trip, it was time to get ready for the next leg of her journey, a whistle stop tour of Shanghai. “I enjoy meeting our customers and love the travel aspect of the job. I definitely want to travel more frequently to other countries next year and get to know what makes our customers tick”.

SASHA’S 2013 WISHLIST What fashion items will you be investing in next year?

Tote By Saint Laurant

What colour trends have caught your eye?

This season is all about white. We saw a lot of head-to-toe looks on the runway; I especially loved Valentino’s full-length white lace dress. The trend continues into accessories too - white single sole pumps are an absolute must-buy!

Rose Gold Hot Lips Ring By Solange Azagury-Partridge

valentino spring/summer 2013 sydney stella mccartney Autumn/winter 2012

The new reversible leather and suede tote from Saint Laurent Paris is the bag of the season and absolutely top of my wish list. Fine jewelry is a great investment too – I love Solange Azagury-Partridge’s rose gold hot lips ring.
It’s become a new classic.

With more travel on the agenda for 2013, what places are you looking forward to seeing?

Next year we’re off to Australian Fashion Week. I can’t wait to see the sights in Sydney and check out the fashion scene there. Holiday-wise, some of my favorite summer hotspots include Ibiza and Greece because the sun always shines and everyone is so chic. I always find time for a weekend away in the English countryside too - Babington House is a particular favorite of mine.

What beauty essentials will you continue to use next year?

I rely on a handful of simple products that work hard for me. Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser is a must-have for brightening skin tone particularly in the winter months, and when travelling, I carry Caudalie’s Face Mist with me. It’s really refreshing and super compact which makes it extrahandy when trying to pack light.

babington house

What will you be reading in 2013?

In addition to the fashion magazines of course, I’ll continue to read The Economist, and perhaps a revisit to one of my favorite novels; ‘The Fountainhead’ by Ayn Rand – a beautiful tour de force portraying the passion of a visionary architect.
Any culinary goals for next year?

Top of my list is the Ferran brother’s restaurant ‘41 Degrees’ in Barcelona – I can’t wait to try their 41 course tasting menu.

0 year old fashion blogger Aysha Mattar originally hails from Bahrain but has been living in Dubai for almost two years now. Although it took some time to adapt to the fast pace of life here, she positively loves it now and it’s slowly becoming her second home. She started her fashion blog in May 2009 as an outlet to figure out whether a career in fashion was really what she wanted. “I was working in an industry at the time that wasn’t really me and instead of jumping right in and trying to pursue a career in fashion I took time, through blogging, to figure out my plans”. Aysha started off with a few fashion courses overseas and eventually secured an internship with aspirational UK stylist Kate Ruth. “I asked her a billion and one questions, and slowly realized that this was what I wanted to be

Editor of doing for the rest of my life”. As for her personal style, it depends on her mood at the time but also comfort, with this usually winning out over any other elements. “I love my tank tops, shorts, lots of denim with more girly elements comprised of frills & lace. And accessories are a must, an obsession even. I’ve been investing more & more in them because to me, that’s what helps your personality shine through”. Inspired by the hippie artistic style of her Mother and eclectic style of her Aunt,

her top three label obsessions are Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney and Carven, the perfect embodiment of relaxed cool styling. “I’m also inspired by Alexa Chung, I love the fun and whimsical way she makes boy/girl dressing acceptable”.

AYSHA’S 2013 WISH LIST What’s on the covet list for next year?

I’m constantly updating my covet list! There are so many things, but if I had to name just three, they would be the Pamela Love for Nine West boots, Isabel Marant wedge boots and a clutch by Charlotte Olympia.

mara hoffman spring/summer ‘13

What designer collections are you looking forward to seeing?

I’m super excited about Stella McCartney and Jil Sander for next season and I seriously CAN NOT wait to get my hands on a couple of Mara Hoffman pieces. I’m so excited! Who do you think will do the best high street versions of the S/S13 trends?

Well initially from a trend perspective, I’m very excited about grunge and to see how that’s going to translate from the runways onto the streets. I’ve also been finding it hard to not obsess over pattern and print clashing and I can’t wait to see what Isabel Marant and 3.1 Philip Lim come out with. From a high street perspective, it’s impossible to walk into Zara and leave empty handed. They have the best interpretation of the new season trends.

Boots By Pamela Love For Nine West

What are your travel plans for next year?

I’m hoping to plan a trip to Italy, Tuscany in particular. There’s something about the place that feels super romantic & real. It’s top of my travel wishlist for 2013.

Charlotte Olympia Clutch At Harvey Nichols

What are your beauty goals for 2013?

I’m open to all sorts of experiences especially when it comes to makeup & skincare. I would love to know how to properly take care of my skin now that I’m in my thirties. From a makeup viewpoint, my Mother recently introduced me to Laura Mercier and I have to say I love the whole range. I’ve also got my eye on some Chubby Sticks from Clinic, they look so fun! Do you plan to do more recreational reading?

One of my resolutions for 2012 was to read at least 10 books, and I’m happy to report I’m on book 11 right now (Travels with a Tangerine by Tim Macintosh Smith), so I want to do that again next year. I love to spend a few hours reading fashion magazines too, no better place then beside the pool or on a plane.

STEFANIE OST Fashion Model and founder of SO Famous

riginally hailing from Stuttgart, Germany, fashion model Stefanie Ost first came to Dubai five years ago for a modeling job. Six weeks later, having fallen in love with the UAE, she decided to prolong her contract and take up a media and communications course at Middlesex University. “I enjoyed myself so much during my time here and knew before my contract was up that I’d be staying on. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made”. With over 11 years experience as a successful high fashion model, Stefanie has had many incredible career highlights; from walking for Etro at Milan Fashion Week, shows for Roberto Cavalli and Christian Dior to covers for Elle, Harpers Bazaar and Marie Claire. Having amassed this wealth of experience and wanting to keep a firm foot in the industry, Stefanie decided to pour her expertise into SO Famous, a new modeling, etiquette and makeover academy, which also specialises in model career management, makeovers and image consultations. “I know the industry very well and decided it was time for me to help other young women with

the same dream I once had, to get started in the modeling industry – that’s why I founded SO Famous”. The academy is in partnership with international model agency Wilhelmina Models, thus giving it serious fashion credentials and making it the only international modeling agency in the UAE. “Under this division with Wilhelmina, we offer modeling courses and photo shoots for those looking to expand their portfolio, it’s a full spectrum service”. A result of being immersed in the fashion industry for so many years, Stefanie describes her personal style as

Stefanie’s 2013 Wishlist What’s on your accessory wishlist for next year?

I definitely need to get hold of a Hermes Birkin Bag as well as a Rolex Daytona in yellow or rose gold. Both are classics and in my opinion excellent investments.

What new wardrobe additions are on the agenda?

Leather dresses have really caught my eye recently. I believe a well-fitted leather dress or skirt is extremely appealing. I am also looking forward to the return of ’60s-inspired clothing – not sure about the animal print comeback though! Any holiday escapes planned?

michael kors autumn/winter 2012

I plan to getaway for a few days to the W resort in the Maldives at some point. St Tropez and Cannes are on the list for next summer too. Ideally I would also include a night or two in Hotel Cap du Eden-Rock in Cap D’Antibes, I absolutely love it there. Will you be changing your beauty regimen in 2013?

Because of my modelling career, I already know quite a lot about makeup. I’ll probably have a makeup consultation with our inhouse makeup artist though, since she is fabulous and I love picking up new tricks and techniques.

Are there any new products on your beauty wishlist?

I’m in love with La Prairie’s pure Gold Serum, I couldn’t live without it! So I’ll continue to use that. Will you be setting yourself any health or fitness goals in 2013?

Oh yes definitely! I already work out daily with my personal trainer but it’s my goal to tone up a bit more, build some muscles and, in particular, some defined abs. Strong is the new skinny! Moreover, I am aiming to have more time yoga and relaxing massages.

The women of the region are particularly fond of accessories and no one works them with such aplomb. From the perfect stiletto peeptoe heel, the latest in fine jewellery or bold sun shades, our love for accessories keeps on blossoming with each new delivery but not more so than for a statement bag. Luxurious exotic leathers, monograms, oversized or structured styles, whatever the weather we love nothing more than a beautiful piece of arm candy.

Grace, Dhs150

A great gift idea for fashion enthusiasts, style tomes look as good on a coffee table as their subjects do in action. The most highly anticipated launch of the year has to be Kate: The Kate Moss Book (Rizzoli). Put together by Moss herself in partnership with Fabien Baron, Jefferson Hack and the model scout who discovered her, Jess Hallet, it is a stylish retrospective of the career of probably the most famous model style icon in the world. Editing such a tome clearly proved a task for the team who obviously couldn’t rest on one gorgeous picture of Kate at work, so there are eight fabulous covers for us to choose from. Lucky us. Other recent releases to quench a sartorial thirst are fantastical fashion

photographer Tim Walker’s Story Teller (Phaidon), Chanel’s The Little Black Jacket by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld (Steidl), Creative Director of US Vogue Grace Coddington’s Grace: A Memoir (Chatto and Windus), and Roitfeld’s own retrospective Irreverent (Rizzoli). For those more dedicated collectors, Bottega Veneta have created a luxury edition of their first book Bottega Veneta (Rizzoli) encased in the atelier’s signature intrecciato leather. One edition only is available in each of the Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall boutiques for Dhs2,750 each.

Giving Back Being socially responsible has never been cooler. Looking good whilst doing good is the easy chic way to wear your heart on your sleeve. Whether it’s giving back to the planet through sustainable fashion or to communities around the world that create it, or by making a charitable donation through your spending, there are unlimited options of how to make the world a better place little by little, through supporting fashion. Velvet’s April issue, with supermodel philanthropist Natalia Vodianova on the cover, highlighted a number of pioneer’s in the industry and ways to give back without letting go of love for style. From Livia Firth’s Green Carpet Challenge (see com) worn most recently by Nicole Kidman, the much coveted label Beulah worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, to closer to home labels like Palestyle and Zanmi that have a generous edge, it’s time to buy into some positive luxury, ‘tis the season of giving after all.

Interior Accents

Interior accessories are a great gift for homemakers. From pillows to plant pots, chaise longues to candle holders, whether a statement or a token there’s a little bit of interior love to give to all.

No gift guide is complete without a sprinkling of gem-tastic jewellery. In the Middle East especially, we are fond of flashing a beautifully paved cocktail watch, playing with a layered pendant or two around our necks, diamond encrusted, naturally, and giving our daily look a knuckledusting of statement rings. For really gorgeous, unique and eclectic jewellery that indicates extra special effort was made, look no further than multi-brand boutique, Stone. A hot mix of exquisite jewellery lines all under one roof for the easiest chic-shopping. Stone boutique is located on the ground floor of the Village Mall in Jumeirah, Dubai +971 43427050

A leading trend for autumn/ winter 2012, heritage fashion is a look we’re getting enthusiastic about as we plan our travels to the cooler climates of London, Paris, New York and the ski slopes of Lebanon, Canada and Europe. Lead by Christopher Bailey’s tweeds, quilts and herringbones at Burberry Prorsum we love the classic British ‘countryside’ style he champions. The only look to wear this winter, home or abroad.

Ras Al Khaimah local Madiyah Al Sharqi’s contrasting tones and materials have caused quite a stir finding a home at Boutique 1 and Symphony boutiques, Bahraini beauty Sofia Al Asfoor’s bags debuted at Saks Fifth Avenue and Lebanese designers Dina JSR’s architectural creations and Sarah Baadarani have proved haute couture sensibilities are still very much a part of Middle Eastern aesthetic.

Party Bags

Online Emporiums MIU MIU

Still somewhat of a revolution, online shopping is taking the Middle East by storm as more and more home grown online boutiques are welcomed to the web. A brilliant way to shop fashion, beauty and lifestyle labels and collections that we may not receive to our local shopping malls, by spending online we can also enjoy tax-free benefits and the novelty of trying clothes on in the comfort of your own home – let’s face it, your own mirror is much more flattering. Most sites also have the added bonus of a “wish list” application where you share your most wanted list of fashion and accessories with the simple dispatch of an email to your loved ones.

Party season calls for the perfect party bag. Clutches, minaudieres, envelopes and pouches offer the ideal date for a night out on the circuit. Keep it neat with a box clutch, glam with embellishment, or for those who find it tough packing light: an oversized envelope. Whichever court you’re in there’s a party companion for all. A favourite style of Velvet’s has been Longchamp’s More is More collection of decadent, tactile clutches: sizeable and luxurious.

What are the top sellers for Saks this AW’12?

It’s been a great season this Fall and in particular the Cocktail pant has been a huge winner and is one of my favourite trends. I’m also loving all the statement knitwear that has been fun and quirky and I’m still lusting after Jil Sander’s letter V neck. Faith Connexion If you haven’t invested Dhs2,075 in the essential Biker Jacket this season then there is still time whilst stocks last and the Tuxedo Jacket is still an ultimate staple and so in for Spring Summer 2013.

Jewellery is a very popular gift – what brands are Saks championing right now?

We have expanded our accessories department over the last season and now have the best names including Erikson Beamon, Mawi, Oscar de la Renta, Eddie Borgo,Rosantica and Kenneth Jay Lane - There is something to suit everyone from edgy designs to elegant gemstones. New for SS13 we are very excited to introduce Coralia Leets, Vanessa Tugendhaft and Tom Binns to the mix.

Which local designers do you love for AW’12? Kanzi – their abayas and kaftans are so beautiful and regal. They really have broken boundaries in abaya design and quality in the region.

TIMELESS TUXEDO Undoubtedly the most timeless style of jacket a woman, or man, can own. Slung over jeans it’s effortless, over a dress it’s glamorous, and over underwear it’s scandalous. Just see Kate Moss.

What’s been the ‘it’ bag of the season? The Marc Jacobs ‘Antonia’ bag – it’s a gorgeous, no-fuss bag with a simple chic design that carries all your essentials. It also comes in amazing colours – I had a difficult time choosing which one I wanted!

We have amazing new brands coming into Saks for SS13 which we are very excited about! In store for December are two of my favourites - The Row and It’s party dressing time – who Vionnet. The Row is super hip should we go to for the best and are breaking boundaries party dresses and dancing in design and quality. This shoes? And if you want something a little more relaxed Buy items that are timeless: A little black dress (no then Iro’s Sequin Jackets are super fabulous and one does it better than Azzedine Alaia); a Tuxedo you wont go unnoticed! For the ultimate in Party Jacket (timeless and a must for Spring Summer Shoes Rupert Sandersons Marilyn Crystal Lips 2013); a pair of statement shoes – the Walter Sandals are a real statement his Fall and also I am Steiger “claw” heel booties are super high and loving the Lucy Choi Adelite Gliiter pump in Gold amazingly comfortable and a leather biker Jacket and Silver…they go with everything. Zadig & Voltaire Zadig & Voltaire’s Creative Director Cecilia Bonstrom shares her thoughts on life in fashion’s fast lane with some rock ‘n roll anecdotes along the way. The rock ‘n roll sensibility of Zadig & Voltaire is epitomised by the young hip faces that represent it and the cool, creative types that wear it. Everyone from indie chicks like Chloe Sevigny and Lou Doillon to the more polished Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Emma Watson have a piece of Zadig & Voltaire’s deconstructed cool hanging in their well

edited wardrobes. The ultimate way to channel innate French style, with its nonchalant attitude and give-a-damn aesthetic, Zadig & Voltaire’s look is one that was first championed by the ex-poster girl, bad-girl model Erin Wasson and is updated for autumn/winter 2012 with a softer, more feminine appeal, represented by their new face, the pretty flawless Camille Rowe. Camille Rowe is the face of this year’s campaign, how does she embody the Zadig brand?

Camille Rowe is the kind of girl that many girls want to be. She is fresh, funny and very sexy all at the same time. She is extremely feminine but then also like a tomboy, so she emulates all the contrasts that Zadig & Voltaire is about. She was the perfect choice! Camille is quite a new face on the scene and has taken over from Erin Wasson. How do you feel this impacted the campaign?

There is only one Erin Wasson - she is like a female version of Mick Jagger! She is SO rock ‘n’ roll. When we worked together, every piece of my collection seemed to have

been made especially for her as if she always had that piece in her closet. For us, it had a fantastic impact all over the world, but after three campaigns we had to move on. As I said, Camille is also a true Zadig girl, but in a different way. Her freshness and personal attitude made people love our new campaign. All the French fashion editors love her, which has helped us gain a lot of good coverage in the best French magazines. What inspired you to go down the Rock N Roll route with your line?

Thierry Gillier, the founder of Zadig & Voltaire, had a vision of how he wanted to dress a woman. He wanted to create a new style of fashion, very simple yet contemporary. He wanted the woman to stay cool without becoming a fashion addict, and keep a very young attitude regardless of her age. He invented a style full of contradictions, where a dress is worn over a pair of jeans, or with bikerboots and a men’s blazer. He also loves layering fabrics like cotton, silk and cashmere, giving a ‘just thrown on’ style. It was all this combined that gave the line its typical rock ‘n’ roll look! I took over the creative direction six years ago now and with my Swedish background and masculine way of dressing, I followed his direction in a natural way! I always have icons like Patti Smith or Charlotte Gainsbourg in my head, so Zadig will always have this rock attitude. Describe the tone of your AW2012/13 collection. Who does this appeal to?

For this collection, I had in mind an angel! A golden angel and a dark angel, because I think there are two sides to every woman. Sometimes she wants to look soft, and other times stronger, much more rock ‘n’ roll! The silhouette for both looks is the same, with skinny jeans or tight leathers combined with big chunky sweaters. The dark angel wears black leather pants and oiled textures whereas the golden angel is dressed in golden dresses and cream coloured cashmere sweaters. Who inspires you? Do you have a muse?

I get inspired from seeing people on the

Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley in a jacket from Zagid & Voltiare AW’12

streets, surfing online blogs, assisting at art fairs and reading contemporary art books. I live and breathe the brand and am constantly having new ideas come into my head. I note everything in a notebook so I’m always one step ahead with the following season. What’s been your personal highlight in the growth of the Zadig brand?

Zadig & Voltaire was already a magic brand when I started, but I have added a more structured element to its identity. Before me, it was mostly about the knitwear and cashmere, but since I joined the team we have become more and more known for our blazers. It’s a real passion for me to choose the materials. It usually takes five weeks each season to find the perfect textures but I have so much fun doing it. I only choose French or Italian fabrics and take great pride in creating well-cut blazers in very noble materials. Describe your personal look?

I always wear black whether I’m working or not. I love wearing flat boots, black jeans and a black men’s cashmere sweater.

Erin Wasson stars as the face of Zagid & Voltiare SS’12

What is main influence behind the upcoming Spring collection?

The upcoming collection is all about Los Angeles and Coachella. I recently visited LA on a research trip to find vintage pieces, which is when I got the vision for Spring/Summer 2013. Zadig & Voltaire usually has a masculine look yet I’ve ended up with many feminine pieces in this collection. Think raw-edged sheer silk, tie & dye prints, vintage looking cotton with lace, colourful leopard prints on thin cashmere and golden blazers. All these pieces are to be combined with a leather jacket or skirt, military-themed pieces, or printed and embroidered shorts - It is a true rockstar look! For this season I have chosen a very different looking model than before... A Patti Smith looking girl with a lot of personality. You will discover it soon! Zadig & Voltaire is available in Galeries Lafayette

Banish the unsightly dark circles under your eyes with Clinique’s latest beauty pick me up

he number one beauty concern for women in recent years is dark circles under the eyes. Whilst many women are all too aware of the familiar factors that lead to the formation of dark circles, including fatigue, stress, age, dehydration and genetics, very few actually taking steps in their everyday lives to combat them. Clinique’s Regional Education Manager Blair Graham explains that “although certain traits are inherited, many women often overlook simple everyday actions that can minimize undereye circles”. He recommends getting a good night’s sleep, keeping hydrated throughout the day and making a conscious effort to minimize the presence of stress. Sleep, in particular, is very important. “When it comes to bedtime try and resist crawling in to bed with your laptop, iPad or Smartphone and use this time to get some quality sleep – 7.5-8 hours is a reasonable amount.” Clinique’s new formula works by providing instant moisturisation under eyes and by implementing a brightening action with their new Translucent Optics Technology. Key ingredients of Vitamin C and Mulberry Root work together to minimize the appearance of darkness, green tea extract soothes and calms irritation, while whey protein and Siegesbeckia Orientalis Extract promote skin’s natural collagen production to strengthen thin, delicate skin underneath the eye area. The combination of these elements results in a

Banish Dark Circles 1. Drink plenty of water - a minimum of 2.5 liters of water each day 2. Avoid touching your eyes, as this can encourage dark circles to form 3. Try and get a minimum of 7-8 hours sleep a night. Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector is the latest addition to the Clinique Even Better range. Designed to combat skin discolouration, hyper pigmentation issues and uneven skin textures in all skin types, it’s the ideal choice for those with problematic skin.

revolutionary new formula that instantly lessens the appearance of dark circles on all skin tones from fair to deep. Not only that, the applicator is designed to help too. “A special metal was selected so that when you’re applying it, the applicator actually helps micro-circulation around the eye area” says Blair. “Our research and development team carefully worked on its shape too, the ergonomic design fits the eye area perfectly and helps to break up fluid congestion”. Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector is lightweight, oil-free, and easy to use and helps prime the skin before makeup. For best results Blair recommends applying it twice a day straight from the applicator, using your fingertips to smooth away any excess product. The Spa treatment

Mother-to-Be at Amara Spa

ong before entering Amara Spa, the benefits of booking its Mother-to-Be package can be felt – the peaceful gardens of Park Hyatt Dubai and its views over the Creek are enough to bring out an inner glow in even the most frazzled expectant mum. While the virtues of the spa have been extolled numerous times over, their maternity package is particularly well construed, divided as it is into a one-hour full body massage and a 45-minute facial. Designed for those in their third trimester, the package tackles all of the most common pregnancy complaints, addressing hormonal breakouts, calf cramps and lower backache while simultaneously restoring a sense of calm. As with all Amara Spa treatments, the Mother-to-Be package begins with a signature foot ritual in which the feet are bathed in warm water in the sanctum of a private courtyard. The full body massage is then performed lying down, on one side and then the other, propped up by cushions and towels. The belly and breasts are avoided by the therapist, whose deft hands nevertheless soothe knots and tension in all other parts of the body

with the help of Aromatherapy Associates massage oils, perfectly safe in pregnancy. The massage ends with an invigorating head rub, clearing the mind, restoring alertness and preparing the face for the impending 45-minute facial. Although Amara Spa facialists usually favour Anne Semonin products, pregnancy calls for a gentler approach. Carita is therefore used throughout the process which includes a gentle cleanse, tone, exfoliation and moisturising mask - thankfully, the whole range has a very subtle fragrance, an essential for those whose sense of smell is particularly sensitive in the weeks before the stork arrives. The package ends with a light lunch, pre-ordered upon arrival and served either within the spa or beside the hotel’s immaculate swimming pool. Guests are invited to choose a juice, tea, water, light dish and dessert to be sampled in a blissedout haze, which even the decidedly tangy mint lemonade isn’t acerbic enough to lift. Mother-to-Be package includes a 1 hour Stress Release Massage followed by a 45 minute Carita facial and a light lunch, Dhs850, at Amara Spa, Park Hyatt +9714 6021234,

Pretty Pastel Pastel hair colours are becoming increasingly popular with A-listers, from Kelly Osbourne’s soft lavender locks to Katy Perry’s blue and purple ponytail. The best way to see what colour suits you best is to try chalking first - a temporary hair dying technique that uses chalk to colour the hair so it won’t force you into a long term commitment if it doesn’t turn out right.

Crazy Crimping Milla Jovovich and Taylor Swift’s crimped hairstyles are two beautiful examples of why this look works. While wider crimps have become more popular on the runway with the return of the 80s, narrower crimps are also making a come back. The key to successful crimping is to make sure you don’t use a crimping iron on wet or damp hair and apply a good heat protection product before styling.

Lifestyle NEWS

The Best inases new rele

All the best in this month’s literature By Laura Collacott

Kylie: Fashion Kylie Minogue and William Baker, Thames and Hudson Kylie has released this book to coincide with her celebration of 25 years in the business. It charts her relationship with fashion and designers throughout her career, examining the highs and lows and noting that fashion can act as a real souvenir of particular times.

The Seamstress Maria Dueñas, Penguin, 2011

Set in the exotic locations of Morocco, Spain and Portugal during the wartime years of the early twentieth century, this book explores the political circumstances of the Spanish Civil war and Franco’s Spain through the eyes of an impoverished, hardworking seamstress. Sira trains alongside her mother as a child and shows a natural flair for dressmaking that serves her in extraordinary, unseen ways as her life takes sharp turns through love, loss, friendship and war. Dueñas weaves a masterful fabric of characters and interactions that keep the reader absorbed for hours. The ends seem to tie up a bit too neatly in the conclusion, as if the author got bored of her own story, but the rest is so beautifully written we can forgive a clichéd ending.

Diane von Furstenberg and the tale of the Empress’s New Clothes Camilla Morton, HarperCollins Camilla Morton reworks the cautionary tale of vanity from a fashionista perspective. Style blends with fairytale in this book celebrating the life of the famous fashion designer, with illustrations created by staff from the icon’s own studio. Frivolous fun.

An Extraordinary Theory of Objects: A memoir of an outsider in Paris Stephanie LaCava, HarperCollins Stephanie is an awkward girl uprooted from her home country by her father’s job and moved to France. She finds solace in the beauty of objects around her as she deals with deep anxiety brought on by her circumstances, eventually revisiting France in adulthood to make peace with her inner child.

Delightful cake ideas for an impressive homemade afternoon tea STICKY TOFFEE CAKE

Green Tea Scones

Warm, rich and decadently sticky, this melt in the mouth cake is a great afternoon pick me up

A modern twist on the classic afternoon tea scone, green tea adds a unique flavour and a hint of colour.

Ingredients 225g dried dates 300ml of water 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 170g soft light brown sugar 110g butter, room temperature 1 tsp vanilla 2 eggs, beaten 170g self raising flour

Ingredients 250g plain flour 1/3 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon green leaf tea 70g butter 150ml milk 1 egg, separated

For the icing 6 tablespoons double cream 85g soft light brown sugar 30g butter 30g icing sugar, sifted

• •

Preheat the oven to 180*C. Butter and base line a shallow 28cm x 18cm baking tin. Cut each date into three or four pieces. Place in a saucepan with the water. Bring to the boil, and then boil uncovered, for about 10 minutes, until all the water is absorbed and the dates have softened. Remove from the heat. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda and set aside to cool. Cream together the butter and brown sugar. Stir in the vanilla. Gradually beat in the eggs and then fold in the cooled date mixture. Stir in the flour. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan. Smooth the surface. Bake for 35 minutes, until risen and just set. Remove from the oven and leave in the tin for 15 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. For the icing, gently heat the cream, sugar and butter together in a small pan until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to the boil and then cook, uncovered for 4 minutes, until golden. Do not stir. Leave to cool. When cold, beat in the icing sugar until smooth. Using the back of a wet spoon, spread it over the cake. Leave to set before cutting into 18 rectangles. Serve with fresh coffee or as a naughty dessert.

• •

• •

Sift together the four, baking powder, salt, green tea and sugar. Cut the butter into small pieces. With your fingertips, mix the butter into the flour until it becomes dry and flaky. Combine the milk and egg yolk, and pour the mixture into the flour a little at a time. Mix and knead into a moist dough, but not so moist that it becomes moist. Preheat the oven to 180°C Place the dough on a floured board and knead slightly until smooth. Roll out to a thickness of 2cm and cut out shapes with a cookie cutter or the rim of a glass. Brush the tops with a little egg white, place on a baking sheet, and bake for 12-15 minutes, until slightly brown. Serve with clotted cream and your choice of jam. Rhubarb, in particular, is a winner.

Serve Green Tea Scones with your favourite jam, clotted cream and aromatic loose leaf tea.

long bar

Sanderson Hotel This incredibly hip celebrity favourite designed by Philippe Starck is the only place to stay in London if you’re into fashion and design. The eclectic haven, located within walking distance of the city’s best shopping, has a great, energetic vibe that’s typical of the fashion capital. The lobby is scattered with baroque furniture contrasting against a Salvador Dali lip sofa, modern art and sculptures. The rooms are each individually designed with unexpected elements such as pictures on the ceiling, glass-walled bathrooms, Voltaire handwritten rugs and are peppered with a mix ‘n match of quirky accessories.

Though most time spent in London is out of the hotel exploring, in the evenings, the Long Bar is the glamorous post-work hangout of the city’s media types, so the atmosphere is electric and a great place for people watching. Suka, the India Mahdavi designed Malaysian restaurant is also a popular destination for dining with stylish Londoners. For those in need of a little rest and relaxation after days spent taking in the sights and energy of the city, Sanderson’s Agua Spa is a fluffy white cloud of calm.

The menu features the exclusive treatments of beauty favourites Eve Lom, Natura Bisse and Jurlique and accommodates both men and women. Berners Street, London, W1, +44 (0)207 3001400;

hen Geox and Red Bull invited Velvet as a guest at the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix, there was little doubt that it was going to be an out of this world experience. Two names synonymous with the sport that epitomises the high-octane glamour of international travel, beautiful women, fast cars and, of course, the F1 Drivers themselves, the invitation was one not to be missed. It is well documented that there are few race tracks in the world that have the same

wow-factor as that of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Positioned on Yas Island, the track zips around the 5* hotels, under the Yas Viceroy so guests inside can spectate from the hotel, and around the multi-million dirham yachts that line the marina. As a fashion magazine, it may not be obvious that there is an affiliation with the world’s fastest sport, apart from of course the glamour, but when one of the sponsors of a xxx winning team is Italian footwear brand Geox, the association becomes clear. Mostly known for their practical shoe designs, collaborations with the designer

Patrick Cox and high fashion shoes. On the other end of the spectrum, Geox are also the creators of the high-tech, fireproof protective shoes that the Formula 1 Red Bull team racing drivers, lead by Mark Weber and Sebastien Vettel, wear. An amalgamation of exciting experiences for the senses, from the fanatical fans lining the track, the jawdropping model types in barely-there shorts, tanned limbs that go on forever, beautiful people, champagne and corporate hospitality the Grand Prix is an unmissable day of excrutiating amounts of fun.

The way the Formula 1 girlfriends dress when they attend the Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton’s girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger chooses a capsule wardrobe of white vests and jeans, whilst Jenson Button’s Japanese model girlfriend, Jessica Michibata, stays feminine in pretty dresses.

Fashion Note: NEVER wear high heels, flats are much more stylish at a sporting event, let alone more comfortable. If you must add some height then at the very most go for a wedge. Geox has some great flat shoes in sticking with the theme.

Having spoken to several matchmakers and met with objections and continued insistence that the rich only marry within their circle and only into their own fabric, she continued unfazed even when she was told the elite or famous would only appreciate the educated, well connected and cultured. Being beautiful and gorgeous was a wonderful and welcome plus. She began by using the photos she had saved of Samsara – Samsara with her horses and foals, Samsara with her pet dolphin, Samsara at her house in Monaco, Samsara and her jewelry, her paintings, her exotic white pet tiger and finally Samsara’s Rolls Royce. She met with the matchmaker under the assumed guise of the representative of Lady Lulu. No one could have been a better representative for her public relations and no one could have been a better tool in that situation. She selected what Lady Lulu would approve of and determined the best way forward. She would do the introduction via telephonic conversations and blackberry chats would be the perfect medium for the inevitable exchange of images. She could take her sweet time and she could properly welcome the suitor into her web. And the wedding date would be set for three months from the first conversation and it was to be absolutely non-negotiable. A catch of a suitor was furnished with images of his prized bride to-be; he was impressed and so very grateful for the introduction. She had deliberately chosen

She had sent messages to him asking if he did not like how she looked when he saw her and explaining how she had to act indifferent because everything is on camera in Bahrain, and was in fear of her reputation being tarnished had she done so. The Prince called Samsara and said that he was in love with her, but respected that she was happily married. He told her that her friend had deliberately tried to trick him into marrying her using her. Had he not insisted on seeing her, he would have been married to the wrong girl. He was angry, hurt, feeling cheated never spoke to Lulu again. Once confronted the friendship between the girls instantly crumbled to dust. The Legend of

The birth of the Union that united the emirates into a nation. This is the story of our father. By Sheikha Hend Al Qassemi

t was the day before Eid. He was sick and his health was failing. The doctors had ordered him to bed and expected him to rest. He heard them and nodded politely as his family expressed their concern for him. Anxious members of the court moved to cancel the Eid Majlis, turning away the general public and royals who had come to convey their regards on the blessed occasion. He awoke at dawn, concluded his prayers and sat waiting in the center of majlis for his loyal subjects; his brothers. No one came because the gates had been closed. He stood slowly and tepidly, bones creaking, feeling his 85 years. He took a few steps towards the large doors and to his surprise, found them closed. His voice bellowed with anger as he demanded that the gates be opened and that his people be let in to see him and for him to see them. Without delay the grand doors to the Majlis were opened and Sheikh Zayed received every last visitor. A genuine prince of hearts, Sheikh Zayed amongst his people, was loved and adored. Admired and idolized. He was their father. So it came to be, that on the last Eid that his body could carry him, he stood and received his people with open arms and a smile. The following year, God laid claim to his trust and Sheikh Zayed passed on in Ramadan, a few days before Eid. Sheikh Zayed was a compassionate man. He passed away over a decade away, and the entire Arab nation still weep his passing.

His charity and peaceful intervention in political and poverty stricken places was noted and internationally acclaimed. Upon his passing, weddings bells were silenced for two years upon the people’s own self accord. The public could not bear to have a loud or big wedding with his death leaving a hole in our lives. In the early fifties, he had rejected a £30 million bribe offered to him to allow Aramco to explore oil in a disputed territory. He left to Geneva, accompanied by his brother Hazza in 1955, where he gave evidence. The British, whom were keeping the peace, then, saw justice through. In 1958, oil was discovered, and the veins of life began sprouting across the towns of Abu Dhabi and Alain. The United Arab Emirates was born with six emirates from the original nine. Bahrain, Qatar and Ras Al Khaima had all declined. The following year Ras Al Khaima made the decision to join the federation. It was agreed that each Sheikh would rule for five years, and after difficult negotiations, they signed and went ahead with the Union. At the time, Ras Al Khaima had the highest population, Qatar the most money and Bahrain the best work opportunities. When Zayed was appointed president, his grace and generosity left little to be desired and so it came to be that he was reappointed in 1976, 1981, 1986 and 1991. After which he was declared an honorary and permanent president of the UAE. It was evident that he was a leader that was

born to guide the people towards a better future and as such he fathered the Emirates first successes well. Regarded in his time as a liberal Muslim ruler and head of state, he permitted free worship and private media but within the limitations of the local culture and the respect for tradition and heritage. Forbes magazine estimated his fortune around USD 20 billion and the Abu Dhabi sovereign fund portfolio was over US$1 trillion in investments in the USA alone. Part of the wealth can be attributed to the fact that Abu Dhabi sits on a tenth of the worlds’ oil. CNN and well-reputed publications have stated that Abu Dhabi is the richest city in the world. As wealthy as he was, he enjoyed a relatively simple lifestyle. His daily breakfast consisted of dates with his morning coffee after which he would proceed with receiving the public. For leisure, he was a keen rider and falcon hunter, a sport he excelled in and his dogs. He abandoned this hobby eventually as he came to feel very strongly about conservation of the environment, and he was adamant that he set a good example for his people. After all, he was the Sheikh that had expressed a vision for a green and environment friendly UAE. And he continued to work towards achieving this vision throughout his life. With the success of his green efforts and initiatives, he was sure that his people would follow his example – as they followed him in his pursuit of knowledge and a fair and just

representation of Islam. He wanted nothing more than to save the fragile wildlife of the desert. Today his son, Sheikh Khalifa carries his legacy and is following in his footsteps by creating a US$1 billion sustainable city within Abu Dhabi, which is 80% of the total area of the UAE. During the course of Zayed’s life, he funneled the revenue from the oil towards the construction and formation of institutions, hospitals and universities and as they were built up, roads were laid to make access to each addition to the urban landscape easier. Charities were initiated near and far, both in his name and anonymously, and this good gesture of schools, hospitals and orphanages were felt like a heart beat throughout the world in Europe, Asia and Africa. The New York Times in April 1997, had asked Zayed why there was no elected parliament or congress, and this was his answer: “Why should we abandon a system that satisfies our people in order to introduce a system that seems to engender dissent and confrontation? Our system of government is based upon our religion and that is what our people want. Should they seek alternatives, we are ready to listen to them. We have always said that our people should voice their demands openly. We are all in the same boat, and they are both the captain and the crew. Our doors are open for any opinion to be expressed, and this well known by all our citizens. It is our deep conviction that Allah has created people free, and has prescribed that each individual must enjoy freedom of choice. No one should act as if they own others. Those in the position of leadership should deal with their subjects with compassion and understanding, because this is the duty enjoined upon them by Allah, who enjoins upon us to treat all living creatures with dignity. How can there be anything less for mankind, created as Allah’s vicegerent (Khalifa or Caliphate) on earth? Our system of government does not derive its authority from man, but is enshrined in our religion and is based on Allah’s Book, the

Quran. What need have we of what others have conjured up? Its teachings are eternal and complete, while the systems conjured up by man are transitory and incomplete.” Land, homes, schooling and medical care were offered for free. Financial support was given to anyone who approached with an approved business plan, especially if it were coming from a group of eager team-working nationals and individuals. Abu Dhabi prospered and grew, and with this growth he allowed the erection of temples, churches and places of worship to the large number of growing expatriates. This leniency reflected well on the tourists and the workers. Yet all within the borders that respected the local culture of exposed skin and limited public display of affection. Women, via his wife, Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, were driven forward and encouraged to be more. Education, driving, working opportunities flourished and the once shy females began to hold managerial positions in the emirate and were the first to appoint a lady judge too. A strong woman, Sheika Salama, his mother, had had a powerful position when she was alive, raised him to respect and rear women. She helped guide and council her children when they were rulers, and requested that blood never be spilt between the brothers. Such was her word strong, that all obeyed it like it was a law engraved on stone. This was the father of our nation. And this is why he is remembered fondly.

The Year of Blake

From her critically acclaimed, starring role in Savages, commencing the final season of Gossip Girl to becoming the face of Gucci Premiere and marrying Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Reynolds, 2012 has without a doubt been the year of Blake Lively. With a slew of film releases planned for next year, including collaboration with renowned director Steven Soberbergh, 2013 is shaping up to be another great year for Miss B.

Kristen Stewart’s Fashion Velvet Cover Girl Hanaa Ben Abdesslem

Standing at a willowy 5’10, Velvet’s big summer issue cover girl Hanaa Ben Abdesslem took the modeling world by storm in 2012. The Tunisian beauty broke records and boundaries by landing a cosmetic campaign with Lancome, the first Arabic woman to do so, and had her pick of the shows, walking for Chanel, Givenchy and Ralph Lauren, amongst others. With so many achievements to her name after a mere two years in the industry, her star can’t help but shine even brighter in 2013.

Up Close & Personal with Olivia Palermo

Velvet had the pleasure of meeting and photographing style icon and front row favourite, Olivia Palermo for our new season September Issue this year. Spending the day sharing style anecdotes, talking about her gorgeous model boyfriend Johannes Huebl and sifting through rails of beautiful pieces from Chanel, Lanvin and Dior, was so pleasant it didn’t feel like work at all!

What caught Velvet’s attention in 2012… Najwa Karam’s Style

Relationship scandals aside, Kristen Stewart’s style status was cemented in 2012 with one display after another of fashion forward ensembles. Highlights included a beautiful Marchesa black and white lace creation at the London premiere of Snow White and The Huntsman and head to toe Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière at the labels Paris Fashion Week show.

Arab’s Got Talent was compulsive viewing for the Velvet team this year both for the entertainment factor and Najwa Karam’s style. From glorious gowns and stunning Mouawad jewellery to beautiful hair and makeup, she became a firm fashion favourite in 2012.

Sacrebleu! Shoes!

Shoe heaven arrived on our shores in November with the opening of Level Shoe District in Dubai Mall. The largest shoe department in the world, it houses four immense multi-brand areas dedicated entirely to shoe favourites like Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Aennis Eunis and Sergio Rossi, amongst many others.
