nother year has past and no year has been more eventful for Velvet than 2012. Big changes have occurred in the appearance of the magazine, but the message remains the same: localised content with an international appeal that covers the best in fashion, beauty, lifestyle and travel to give the Velvet reader a uniquely insightful experience to the best of everything that is available to you. This issue is a double for December/ January and showcases the things that we have loved, and will continue to love, this year and into the next in fashion, beauty, culture and style, whilst at the same time offering a comprehensive guide to gifting (A-Z Guide to Gifting, page 73). Where fashion begins, beauty follows and it is only fair that what we do for one, we should do for the other, so Simone Gannon, Velvet’s newly appointed Deputy Editor and professionally trained Makeup Artist (in a previous incarnation), has collated the definitive guide to our beauty most wanted (page 118) - products that have caught our eye and are the best of the available best. December is an important time for the UAE as on the 2nd we celebrate our

41st National Day. Young though we may seem as a nation and on paper, we have come leaps and bounds in reality, and growing with more vigour each and every year. We commemorate our founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in our new ‘Icon’ section (page 160) that acts as a platform for celebrating those people whom we respect, regardless of race, culture and industry. As it is the end of the year, we’re making our New Year resolutions and looking forward to what’s in store for us in 2013. Five stylish industry experts share their aspirations and inspirations for the upcoming year in our Look To The Future feature (page 60), and we sat down for an interview with Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 to discuss what’s in store for them and their upcoming spring ’13 collection (Two’s Company, page 50). Another issue crammed full of ideas, anecdotes and exclusive information to keep you going until our next issue in February, have a brilliant end to 2012 and an excellent start to 2013. London, Paris, New York, Milan…Muscat? 2013 is set to be the year that puts Muscat Fashion Week on the map This January, Muscat is set to become the region’s hub for Middle Eastern fashion as Muscat Fashion Week begins. Around 23 of the region’s most reputable design talents will show their latest collections to an international crowd of fashion editors, buyers and journalists over the three day event, being held at the stunning architectural triumph that is the French Embassy. The invitation only event has an invited list of designers that reads like the who’s who in fashion of the Arab world. Endamage, Dibaj and Nawal Al Hooti from Oman, Amina Al Jassim and Razan Alazzouni from Saudi Arabia, Hany El

Behairy from Eqypt, Krikor Jabotian and Sarah Baadarani from Lebanon, as well as designers from Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Bahrain and favourites from the UAE including Kanzi, Mauzan and Khulood Thani. The rumour mill has been churning out a number of exciting firsts for the fashion week, that if proved true could mean the accessories for the shows will be designed by a prolific international footwear designer. Watch this space. Muscat Fashion Week will take place 15th – 17th January, 2013 in Oman.

Showing in Muscat will ideally introduce Mauzan to the wider Omani market, as at this stage Mauzan isn’t stocked in Oman. We’re also looking forward to showing MAUZAN Mauzan to the numerous international buyers and fashion editors who are making the trip to Muscat Fashion Week. What do you feel about the other designers involved?

I’m looking forward to showing my collection alongside other Arabic designers. I think that we as Arabic designers are beginning to be more recognised and with a platform like Muscat Fashion Week, we can all look forward to be recognised and celebrated together. With an already international number of journalists due to attend, what are your hopes for Mauzan?

Mauzan already has many international clients and supporters. But this is something that we would like to grow and build on. It would be fabulous for Mauzan to become even more appreciated on an international level.

ackstage at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, I’m inside the “glitter tent”, the stuff of a 15-year-old boy’s dream. Out there dozens of the world’s most amazonian beauties are being primped and preened for what is generally acknowledged to be the biggest fashion show on earth. In here — a 10ft x 8ft curtained-off corner of the room — three of those models are stripped down to the teeny-tiniest of thongs to be spritzed with sticky body glitter. To say the atmosphere is intense would be something of an understatement. “Oh my God, that really is ridiculously glittery,” says one of the “tinsel ninjas”, surveying the arc of body paint she has just applied. “Oooooh, but it’s soooo pretty,” exclaims Doutzen Kroes. Ninja: “OK, if you’re happy. Now turn around so I can do the top of your butt.”

Later that afternoon, encased in some of the most over-the-top creations ever classed as lingerie, Kroes and her gleaming curves will strut their stuff in one of two live versions of the show. The best bits are then spliced together to be aired on American TV on December 6, and globally in 184 other countries. The first show took place at the New York Plaza Hotel in 1995 (introduced by Stephanie Seymour), and since then it has become an annual event that’s right up there with the Oscars. The Victoria’s Secret circus has travelled to Miami, Los Angeles and Cannes and has grown to become a year-round production that employs more than 1,000 people and now costs an estimated £7.5m to stage. Justin Timberlake famously performed on the catwalk in 2006 —

singing Sexy Back, natch — and since then Will.i.am, Katy Perry and Kanye West are just some of the names to get involved. Tonight it’s the turn of Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars (“between them they have 140m Facebook and Twitter followers” the show’s executive producer, Edward Razek, loves to remind me). But, let’s face it, it’s all about the Angels. Beyond the glitter tent, they glide through the assembled throng of press and international production crews like so many satin-clad birds of paradise, in hot-pink robes that reveal acres of toned, tanned thigh, atop towering Nicholas Kirkwood heels (he did all the shoes for the show). Hair in rollers, tapping away at their BlackBerries, they move between the different make-up stations and circle the never-ending buffet, occasionally going in for a grape or a Diet Coke. It’s like being in with the flamingos at London Zoo — you can’t stop gawping. Of course, some of them have become

The night before the show, the celebrity tanner Jimmy Coco (Victoria Beckham’s go-to guy in LA) is on bronzing duty. When it comes to make-up, it’s all about “the glow”, says Tom Pecheux, also the creative make-up director for Estée Lauder, which means little more than “an upgrade” of the girls’ already gorgeous features. “Too much foundation, eyes, lips, it will kill the sexiness,” he says. “The Victoria’s Secret girls are meant to look sexy, but in a nice way.” Or, as Razek puts it, the Angels should look “like the girl next door, but when she just got out of bed. Our girls are healthy girls, it’s a wholesome message. But the notion that nice girls don’t wear lingerie is ridiculous.” He also insists that this whole extravaganza is a production put on by women for women. “Eighty per cent of our customers are women, as is virtually everyone who works in this business.” In fact, I later meet the company’s CEO, Sharen Turney, a ballsy blonde with her own (female) bodyguard in tow. She’s snuck her 18-year-old son into the aftershow party, and there’s Karlie Kloss in front of us, gyrating on the dancefloor to Sexy and I Know It. n hearing the name Longchamp, one has visions of an elegant French woman skipping along the ChampsÉlysées in Breton stripes and peddle-pushers, signature tote shaped canvas Pliage bag swinging from her elbow. A scene that is typically French, aesthetically Longchamp. Clean, practical and effortlessly chic, a Longchamp bag epitomises covetable French style, with its insouciant charm and brand of Je ne sais quoi that seems to hold such appeal to anyone who isn’t French - the 20 million people who own a Longchamp Pliage bag stand testament to this. “Le Pliage is one of the best selling bags in the world,” says Jean Cassegrain, CEO of Longchamp, “we sell more than three million a year. We should enter in the Guinness Book of Records,” he laughs triumphantly. And laugh triumphantly he

areas, and a 250sq metre space in Milan over three-floors that signifies the French house’s first move in to Italy. There are also plans to open more stores in 2013 on London’s Bond Street, in Brazil and more boutiques in the Middle East. What is it that makes the family owned and run French company such a roaring, global success? The obvious answer would be the accessible price points of what the industry likes to call “affordable luxury,” but that Jean Cassegrain likes to call “contemporary luxury.” The other answers would be their inherited reputation for quality over their 60 year plus life span and the rows of column inches they rack up on a regular basis for their ability to maintain all of the above, whilst remaining timeless and stylish at all times. over the past years has been the collaboration between designers and artists on various milestone projects, all of which are based on relationships that the house has built organically, rather than being an enforced marketing strategy. “We don’t want these collaborations to become systematic. Some brands over exploit it. We want to keep it natural and based on encounters,” Cassegrain says of the long list of much publicised creative affiliations. The most notable of which have been with controversial British artist Tracey Emin to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Le Pliage, the longstanding relationship with the American fashion designer Jeremy Scott, whose often pop-art inspired bags, now collector’s items, are on sale exclusively at Colette in Paris, and the hugely successful project with Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. Succeeding over all these though has been the clever coalition between the Cassegrains and Kate Moss, the World’s most talked about model and face of countless luxury labels over the years including Longchamp, a relationship that

began in 2006. In 2010, she launched a line of bags eponymously named Kate Moss for Longchamp, with her own design logo rubbing alongside that of maison. Another organic cultivation ensures Cassegrain. “We met with Kate for our advertising campaigns and got to know her at the photoshoots. My sister discussed a lot with her about products because she is obviously very interested in products and in fashion, and after two or three years they both

felt confident with each other and wanted to do something together.” The hugely popular natural progression is now in its third year, but Cassegrain is doubtful that another icon could make the grade to design a collection like Moss’ any time soon, saying somewhat protectively “the celebrity thing is very difficult - to associate the brand to a celebrity.” The latest face in the always-playful campaigns is a model that is still well known, but who has a less public persona - although she does have over 400,000 followers on Twitter. “It’s a year since Coco Rocha has been the

model in our advertising and I think she embodies the brand quite well as she is fresh, dynamic and smiling. The positive energy is very much in line with the brand.” In the latest campaign for autumn/winter 2012, Rocha is seen carelessly riding a bicycle in the snow in Paris. Longchamp’s new local address in Mall of the Emirates is an elegant edit of their best-selling collections. Le Pliage, of course, takes centre stage with a dedicated wall showcasing its many colours, whilst other popular new season pieces from the Kate Moss for Longchamp and this year’s More is More collections also have pride of place. Also on display is a capsule edit of the ready-to-wear, matching beautifully with the bags, which Cassegrain says “ is useful because as a new season begins and you go to the stores you have the mannequins and you understand the feeling of the season much

better, it gives more of a dynamic than being just about the bags.” Judging by the 3 million Pliage bags sold each year, it’s unlikely would have a problem even if it was just about the bags.

Two’s COMPANY I

Dsquared2’s high energy duo are a fantastical fashion force to be reckoned with. Natascha Hawke reports.

t is, what feels like, an average afternoon in the Dubai Mall, relatively quiet, except for a few Emirati ladies drifting in and out of the luxury emporiums that encircle the Fashion Atrium and the odd tourist or two, map in hand, navigating their way down fashion avenue. Then, in the distance what can only be described as a moving mass of commotion appears, advancing at rapid speed towards the Dsquared boutique. On closer inspection, the two people at the epicentre of this energetic mass of cameras, prs, ridiculously good-looking men (could that be male models?) are instantly distinguishable, if you’re into fashion, as Dean and Dan Caten, the twin brother designers behind the Dsquared label. On arrival at the boutique it takes at least ten minutes before the twins are sat still (or at least sat), ready for their Velvet interview, such is the request for photos. Is it always like is, I wonder. “No, not really” Dan says coyly, although I suspect it’s more out of modesty then truth judging by the almost hysterical atmosphere that surrounds them. As identical twins they are still somewhat

easily distinguishable between one another but like to confuse things with their signature look of dressing the same, and if that’s not enough, finishing one another’s sentences, which makes transcribing this interview and knowing which twin has said what, a particularly difficult task. It doesn’t matter in the end, as they are two parts of the one entity that has now become a globally recognised fashion force, building their brand out of a labour of love, creativity and, clearly, brotherly support. Born in Toronto, the twins now live between London and Milan (“we’re on a plane every Monday and every Friday”), where they moved to work for Versace in the early nineties and now acts as a base for their own company, presenting their bi-annual collections at Milan Fashion Week. The outré style of fashion loving Italians is clearly a big influence on their collections, even when models are dressed down in denim the glamour is ramped up through high maintenance hair and makeup, excessive accessories and buckets of attitude.

For spring/summer 2013 they cite good friend and Italy’s number one “fashion maniac”, editor of Vogue Nippon Anna Dello Russo as an influence. “She actually inspired us for this show because she says ‘go excess, pile it on, pile it on like in the 90s excess, supermodel days.’” An ode to their fashion roots with clear references to the Versace woman of the nineties, the spring 2013 presentation was all leather mini-skirts, lashings of gold chains and porter caps, reminiscent of the era where Gianni’s runway Supermodels ruled. “There were two editorials we had a reference from and, you know, it’s fun. This is what the 90s meant to us. The girls back then they loved fashion.” And what about now? Is it difficult for them to cast girls that can give the personality and attitude that Dsquared is known for? “Today the models don’t maybe even care about it, back in the day they were living it, they weren’t just models, they loved the fashion,” says Dan ruefully as Dean concurs “now it’s their job to put on clothes so they don’t really care to dress up. There are still one or two like Cara (Delevingne) that love fashion, she’s got that same quality: fun, loving fashion.” I mention that she’s had an impressive show season and her star is looking set to shine even brighter to which they say in unison and without a hint of doubt, “she’s going to be the next Kate Moss because she has all those qualities. She’s beautiful.” Despite the lack of models that live and breathe fashion, Dsquared2’s runway shows are productions that require more

than a little personality from those that are selected to walk, being more like theatrical stage musicals than your average catwalk. “It’s kind of like making a film. We enjoy doing that. We build this collection, it has ideas, it has a theme, it has a story, so we want to put that story in a place, give it a sound. We take you on a trip for 12 minutes and we take you some place, have a bit of fun and it sets a mood.” The autumn/winter 2012 show was a High School Musical explosion of energetic prom queens and rockabillys in tapered cigarette jeans, pencil skirts and mohair cardigans with bouffant, beehive hair and sixties feline liner. A softer edged collection than what we’re used to seeing from Dsquared2 but not completely void of controversy when they accessorised their model high school students with cigarettes. “We had the cigarette to make her bad, we got hacked for that actually but it was ok in the end. I understand why – we were promoting cigarettes - but it was a look, making her bad.” The badness of Dsquared2’s sartorial personalities is perhaps what has given them such a strong identity, after all controversy is always a hot topic, but their more recent collections have seen a much more put together aesthetic than perhaps they have previously been known for. “I think with ‘the girl’ we’ve tried to grow her up a bit. Make her a little bit more mature. She’s always fun, always sexy, then there are some sweet little elements,”

photographer and music video director Jean Baptiste Mondino, wore a pair of Dsquared2 jeans on set of his job as Creative Director of Madonna’s music video for ‘Don’t Tell Me’ from her album Music (2000). Spotting Mondino’s deconstructed denims, Madonna demanded she wear them in the cowboy western inspired video. “We’d just done this demolition deluxe raw, American collection and we’d given some jeans to a friend and she said ‘I want to wear those in the video’, so he said ok I’ll get you the contact.” Next thing they knew they had Madonna’s stylist Arianna Phillips on the phone requesting they send a full collection over the following day. From that small introduction they went on to dress her and her dancers for their Music mini-tour, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now a firm celebrity favourite, do Dean and Dan find the power of celebrity as seductive as some of the other luxury brands? “We don’t go hunting them down. We do love them though. It’s

cool to have a cool celebrity wearing your clothes, but it’s also cool to have a kid on the street wearing your clothes,” reiterating that the Dsquared2 girl has a mind of her own when it comes to fashion, rather than following trends or watching what other people are wearing. “She’s individual too, she’s got her own mind, she knows what she wants, knows how she wants to look and will do it in her own way too. Individuality is what’s cool about fashion right now.” As we come to the end of our interview, we discuss the pros and cons of social media and how important it is to their brand to have a presence out there in cyber space. They’ve been told that they can’t have a company Twitter account as they “tweet too much personal stuff, which is what people want to know – it’s funny. I’m a real person and of course I do real things,” Dan says animatedly. “We have to fight for things now, now we’re at a certain level and they’re like ‘you can’t do that now’.” Is that enough to make them stop? “Stop

working? We do have fun and that’s the fun part. If we stop having fun then that’s when we’ll stop doing this.” Judging by the amount of fun we’ve had today sitting in the boutique, we’re in for a long and outrageously eventful Dsquared2 ride. Dsquared2 is located at the Dubai Mall

For Spring 2013, I am definitely looking at monochromatic pieces, sheer light fabrics, lots of patchwork, and pretty feminine ruffled dresses. If there is one piece that I have been lusting over, it is a pair of Vivienne Westwood printed chunky sandals. I am obsessed with high heels so I spotted them as soon as they walked down the runway. Has your head been turned by any of next years trends?

For SS13, I really enjoyed seeing all the ruffled and frilled pieces walk down the runway. They offer a retro feminine elegant vibe that is needed in today’s fashion scene. Alice & Olivia’s collection is top of my list for SS13. I love how they combined primary hues with pastel palettes – super fresh and fun for spring! I also fell in love with the Sass & Bide S13 collection for their play on masculine and feminine cuts.

What trend will you be saying goodbye to in 2013?

I will be absolutely be saying goodbye to peplum pieces. I’ve seen enough of them, and many different variations, to last me a lifetime. Have you made any holiday plans for next year?

My travel schedules always get prebooked for fashion weeks, so that leaves me with very little time to go on a proper holiday. However, my favorite destination to date would have to be Barcelona - it combines my two favourite things I love doing during the summer – laying on the beach and shopping. My all time favourite hotel is the Art Hotel in Barcelona. Will you be making any changes to your beauty routine in 2013?

My beauty routine doesn’t really change. It’s something I have been doing for years now - it consists of removing my make up every night with a great make-up remover, intensive face wash twice a day (first thing in the morning and last thing at night), moisturising eye cream followed by a moisturising day/night cream.

La Prairie eye cream is something I will never stop using, it’s has a beautiful texture and is very gentle on the skin, I highly recommend it. Also, Estee Lauder’s mattifying primer works wonders. An essential addition to any makeup bag, especially when you live in a Middle Eastern climate.

I have my eye on quite a few of the trends for Spring/Summer 2013. It’s always an exciting season when you live in Dubai because these trends often define how you look for the rest of the year. I loved the beautiful 60s Silhouettes as seen at Louis Vuitton and Moschino, the animal prints from Erdem and short suits like the ones at Michael Kors. I’ll be heading to Topshop, Reiss, H&M and Zara for a more affordable interpretation.

orn and raised in Los Angeles, Sasha Sarokin relocated to London from New York when she joined NET-A-PORTER as Senior Buyer in 2008, having previously worked for Juicy Couture and Scoop. Her current role as Buying Manager of Accessories brought her to Dubai on a flying visit recently. “I’ve loved every minute of the trip here. The UAE is a very important market for Net-a-Porter, our customers here love fashion and are incredibly stylish”. With many abundant trends, brands and styles available in the big wide world of fashion, how does she navigate them all and select the most suitable for Net-A-Porter’s discerning customer? “We’re constantly inspired by the world around us but it really starts at Fashion Week and what’s on the runway and what people are wearing at the shows. We carefully choose products and brands that have a strong emotional draw for our customers”. In addition to trend scouting at the various fashion weeks, a big part of Sasha’s job is to meet with existing and emerging new designers. “I regularly view their latest collections and love discovering something new to wow our customers with. No two days are the same and I thrive on the buzz it gives me”. Next year we’re off to Australian Fashion Week. I can’t wait to see the sights in Sydney and check out the fashion scene there. Holiday-wise, some of my favorite summer hotspots include Ibiza and Greece because the sun always shines and everyone is so chic. I always find time for a weekend away in the English countryside too - Babington House is a particular favorite of mine.

I rely on a handful of simple products that work hard for me. Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser is a must-have for brightening skin tone particularly in the winter months, and when travelling, I carry Caudalie’s Face Mist with me. In addition to the fashion magazines of course, I’ll continue to read The Economist, and perhaps a revisit to one of my favorite novels; ‘The Fountainhead’ by Ayn Rand – a beautiful tour de force portraying the passion of a visionary architect.

Top of my list is the Ferran brother’s restaurant ‘41 Degrees’ in Barcelona – I can’t wait to try their 41 course tasting menu.

Well initially from a trend perspective, I’m very excited about grunge and to see how that’s going to translate from the runways onto the streets. I’ve also been finding it hard to not obsess over pattern and print clashing and I can’t wait to see what Isabel Marant and 3.1 Philip Lim come out with. From a high street perspective, it’s impossible to walk into Zara and leave empty handed. They have the best interpretation of the new season trends.

One of my resolutions for 2012 was to read at least 10 books, and I’m happy to report I’m on book 11 right now (Travels with a Tangerine by Tim Macintosh Smith), so I want to do that again next year. I love to spend a few hours reading fashion magazines too, no better place then beside the pool or on a plane.

Camille Rowe is the kind of girl that many girls want to be. She is fresh, funny and very sexy all at the same time. She is extremely feminine but then also like a tomboy, so she emulates all the contrasts that Zadig & Voltaire is about. She was the perfect choice! Camille is quite a new face on the scene and has taken over from Erin Wasson. How do you feel this impacted the campaign?

There is only one Erin Wasson - she is like a female version of Mick Jagger! She is SO rock ‘n’ roll. When we worked together, every piece of my collection seemed to have

been made especially for her as if she always had that piece in her closet. For us, it had a fantastic impact all over the world, but after three campaigns we had to move on. As I said, Camille is also a true Zadig girl, but in a different way. Her freshness and personal attitude made people love our new campaign. All the French fashion editors love her, which has helped us gain a lot of good coverage in the best French magazines. What inspired you to go down the Rock N Roll route with your line?

Thierry Gillier, the founder of Zadig & Voltaire, had a vision of how he wanted to dress a woman. He wanted to create a new style of fashion, very simple yet contemporary. He wanted the woman to stay cool without becoming a fashion addict, and keep a very young attitude regardless of her age. He invented a style full of contradictions, where a dress is worn over a pair of jeans, or with bikerboots and a men’s blazer. He also loves layering fabrics like cotton, silk and cashmere, giving a ‘just thrown on’ style. It was all this combined that gave the line its typical rock ‘n’ roll look! I took over the creative direction six years ago now and with my Swedish background and masculine way of dressing, I followed his direction in a natural way! I always have icons like Patti Smith or Charlotte Gainsbourg in my head, so Zadig will always have this rock attitude. Describe the tone of your AW2012/13 collection. Who does this appeal to?

For this collection, I had in mind an angel! A golden angel and a dark angel, because I think there are two sides to every woman. Sometimes she wants to look soft, and other times stronger, much more rock ‘n’ roll! The silhouette for both looks is the same, with skinny jeans or tight leathers combined with big chunky sweaters. The dark angel wears black leather pants and oiled textures whereas the golden angel is dressed in golden dresses and cream coloured cashmere sweaters. Who inspires you? Do you have a muse?

streets, surfing online blogs, assisting at art fairs and reading contemporary art books. I live and breathe the brand and am constantly having new ideas come into my head. I note everything in a notebook so I’m always one step ahead with the following season. What’s been your personal highlight in the growth of the Zadig brand?

Zadig & Voltaire was already a magic brand when I started, but I have added a more structured element to its identity. Before me, it was mostly about the knitwear and cashmere, but since I joined the team we have become more and more known for our blazers. It’s a real passion for me to choose the materials. It usually takes five weeks each season to find the perfect textures but I have so much fun doing it. I only choose French or Italian fabrics and take great pride in creating well-cut blazers in very noble materials. Describe your personal look?

I always wear black whether I’m working or not. I love wearing flat boots, black jeans and a black men’s cashmere sweater.

What is main influence behind the upcoming Spring collection?

The upcoming collection is all about Los Angeles and Coachella. I recently visited LA on a research trip to find vintage pieces, which is when I got the vision for Spring/Summer 2013. Zadig & Voltaire usually has a masculine look yet I’ve ended up with many feminine pieces in this collection. Think raw-edged sheer silk, tie & dye prints, vintage looking cotton with lace, colourful leopard prints on thin cashmere and golden blazers. All these pieces are to be combined with a leather jacket or skirt, military-themed pieces, or printed and embroidered shorts - It is a true rockstar look! For this season I have chosen a very different looking model than before... A Patti Smith looking girl with a lot of personality. You will discover it soon! ong before entering Amara Spa, the benefits of booking its Mother-to-Be package can be felt – the peaceful gardens of Park Hyatt Dubai and its views over the Creek are enough to bring out an inner glow in even the most frazzled expectant mum. While the virtues of the spa have been extolled numerous times over, their maternity package is particularly well construed, divided as it is into a one-hour full body massage and a 45-minute facial. Designed for those in their third trimester, the package tackles all of the most common pregnancy complaints, addressing hormonal breakouts, calf cramps and lower backache while simultaneously restoring a sense of calm. As with all Amara Spa treatments, the Mother-to-Be package begins with a signature foot ritual in which the feet are bathed in warm water in the sanctum of a private courtyard. The full body massage is then performed lying down, on one side and then the other, propped up by cushions and towels. The belly and breasts are avoided by the therapist, whose deft hands nevertheless soothe knots and tension in all other parts of the body

with the help of Aromatherapy Associates massage oils, perfectly safe in pregnancy. The massage ends with an invigorating head rub, clearing the mind, restoring alertness and preparing the face for the impending 45-minute facial. Delightful cake ideas for an impressive homemade afternoon tea STICKY TOFFEE CAKE

Green Tea Scones

Warm, rich and decadently sticky, this melt in the mouth cake is a great afternoon pick me up

A modern twist on the classic afternoon tea scone, green tea adds a unique flavour and a hint of colour.

Ingredients 225g dried dates 300ml of water 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 170g soft light brown sugar 110g butter, room temperature 1 tsp vanilla 2 eggs, beaten 170g self raising flour

Ingredients 250g plain flour 1/3 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon green leaf tea 70g butter 150ml milk 1 egg, separated

For the icing 6 tablespoons double cream 85g soft light brown sugar 30g butter 30g icing sugar, sifted

Preheat the oven to 180*C. Butter and base line a shallow 28cm x 18cm baking tin. Cut each date into three or four pieces. Place in a saucepan with the water. Bring to the boil, and then boil uncovered, for about 10 minutes, until all the water is absorbed and the dates have softened. Remove from the heat. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda and set aside to cool. Cream together the butter and brown sugar. Stir in the vanilla. Gradually beat in the eggs and then fold in the cooled date mixture. Stir in the flour. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan. Smooth the surface. Bake for 35 minutes, until risen and just set. Remove from the oven and leave in the tin for 15 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. For the icing, gently heat the cream, sugar and butter together in a small pan until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to the boil and then cook, uncovered for 4 minutes, until golden. Do not stir. Leave to cool. When cold, beat in the icing sugar until smooth. Using the back of a wet spoon, spread it over the cake. Leave to set before cutting into 18 rectangles. Serve with fresh coffee or as a naughty dessert.

Sift together the four, baking powder, salt, green tea and sugar. Cut the butter into small pieces. With your fingertips, mix the butter into the flour until it becomes dry and flaky. Combine the milk and egg yolk, and pour the mixture into the flour a little at a time. Mix and knead into a moist dough, but not so moist that it becomes moist. Preheat the oven to 180°C Place the dough on a floured board and knead slightly until smooth. Roll out to a thickness of 2cm and cut out shapes with a cookie cutter or the rim of a glass. Brush the tops with a little egg white, place on a baking sheet, and bake for 12-15 minutes, until slightly brown. Serve with clotted cream and your choice of jam. Rhubarb, in particular, is a winner.

Serve Green Tea Scones with your favourite jam, clotted cream and aromatic loose leaf tea.

hen Geox and Red Bull invited Velvet as a guest at the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix, there was little doubt that it was going to be an out of this world experience. Two names synonymous with the sport that epitomises the high-octane glamour of international travel, beautiful women, fast cars and, of course, the F1 Drivers themselves, the invitation was one not to be missed. It is well documented that there are few race tracks in the world that have the same

The Prince decided to take matters into his own hands and proceeded as a gentleman would in his position. After finding out from her car plate number who she was, he approached her father and went to have coffee with him in the majlis. He proposed to his daughter, Lulu. The only problem was that his only one of his daughters was of marriageable age and her name was Samsara. And he had only one daughter that matched the description mentioned, but she was already married? Oh, and Lulu was her friend/ entourage. Maybe he was confusing the girls? Being a gentleman, as embarrassed as he was, he left and apologized for the mistake. He had fallen in love with a mirage. Hurt and angry he stayed in the Bahrain for a few days and ignored all calls and messages from Lulu. She had sent messages to him asking if he did not like how she looked when he saw her and explaining how she had to act indifferent because everything is on camera in Bahrain, and was in fear of her reputation being tarnished had she done so. The Prince called Samsara and said that he was in love with her, but respected that she was happily married. He told her that her friend had deliberately tried to trick him into marrying her using her. Had he not insisted on seeing her, he would have been married to the wrong girl. He was angry, hurt, feeling cheated never spoke to Lulu again. Once confronted the friendship between the girls instantly crumbled to dust. Needless to say Lulu became the black sheep in her crowd after the debacle became known and Lulu moved to Saudi Arabia to her family and remains unmarried, working at her mothers’ hair salon. Zayed

The birth of the Union that united the emirates into a nation. This is the story of our father. By Sheikha Hend Al Qassemi

I

t was the day before Eid. He was sick and his health was failing. The doctors had ordered him to bed and expected him to rest. He heard them and nodded politely as his family expressed their concern for him. Anxious members of the court moved to cancel the Eid Majlis, turning away the general public and royals who had come to convey their regards on the blessed occasion. He awoke at dawn, concluded his prayers and sat waiting in the center of majlis for his loyal subjects; his brothers. No one came because the gates had been closed. He stood slowly and tepidly, bones creaking, feeling his 85 years. He took a few steps towards the large doors and to his surprise, found them closed. His voice bellowed with anger as he demanded that the gates be opened and that his people be let in to see him and for him to see them. Without delay the grand doors to the Majlis were opened and Sheikh Zayed received every last visitor. A genuine prince of hearts, Sheikh Zayed amongst his people, was loved and adored. Admired and idolized. He was their father. So it came to be, that on the last Eid that his body could carry him, he stood and received his people with open arms and a smile. The following year, God laid claim to his trust and Sheikh Zayed passed on in Ramadan, a few days before Eid. Sheikh Zayed was a compassionate man. He passed away over a decade away, and the entire Arab nation still weep his passing.

His charity and peaceful intervention in political and poverty stricken places was noted and internationally acclaimed. Upon his passing, weddings bells were silenced for two years upon the people’s own self accord. The public could not bear to have a loud or big wedding with his death leaving a hole in our lives. In the early fifties, he had rejected a £30 million bribe offered to him to allow Aramco to explore oil in a disputed territory. He left to Geneva, accompanied by his brother Hazza in 1955, where he gave evidence. The British, whom were keeping the peace, then, saw justice through. In 1958, oil was discovered, and the veins of life began sprouting across the towns of Abu Dhabi and Alain. The United Arab Emirates was born with six emirates from the original nine. Bahrain, Qatar and Ras Al Khaima had all declined. The following year Ras Al Khaima made the decision to join the federation. It was agreed that each Sheikh would rule for five years, and after difficult negotiations, they signed and went ahead with the Union. At the time, Ras Al Khaima had the highest population, Qatar the most money and Bahrain the best work opportunities. When Zayed was appointed president, his grace and generosity left little to be desired and so it came to be that he was reappointed in 1976, 1981, 1986 and 1991. After which he was declared an honorary and permanent president of the UAE. It was evident that he was a leader that was

born to guide the people towards a better future and as such he fathered the Emirates first successes well. Regarded in his time as a liberal Muslim ruler and head of state, he permitted free worship and private media but within the limitations of the local culture and the respect for tradition and heritage. Forbes magazine estimated his fortune around USD 20 billion and the Abu Dhabi sovereign fund portfolio was over US$1 trillion in investments in the USA alone. Part of the wealth can be attributed to the fact that Abu Dhabi sits on a tenth of the worlds’ oil. CNN and well-reputed publications have stated that Abu Dhabi is the richest city in the world. As wealthy as he was, he enjoyed a relatively simple lifestyle. His daily breakfast consisted of dates with his morning coffee after which he would proceed with receiving the public. For leisure, he was a keen rider and falcon hunter, a sport he excelled in and his dogs. He abandoned this hobby eventually as he came to feel very strongly about conservation of the environment, and he was adamant that he set a good example for his people. After all, he was the Sheikh that had expressed a vision for a green and environment friendly UAE. And he continued to work towards achieving this vision throughout his life. With the success of his green efforts and initiatives, he was sure that his people would follow his example – as they followed him in his pursuit of knowledge and a fair and just

representation of Islam. He wanted nothing more than to save the fragile wildlife of the desert. Today his son, Sheikh Khalifa carries his legacy and is following in his footsteps by creating a US$1 billion sustainable city within Abu Dhabi, which is 80% of the total area of the UAE. During the course of Zayed’s life, he funneled the revenue from the oil towards the construction and formation of institutions, hospitals and universities and as they were built up, roads were laid to make access to each addition to the urban landscape easier. Charities were initiated near and far, both in his name and anonymously, and this good gesture of schools, hospitals and orphanages were felt like a heart beat throughout the world in Europe, Asia and Africa. The New York Times in April 1997, had asked Zayed why there was no elected parliament or congress, and this was his answer: “Why should we abandon a system that satisfies our people in order to introduce a system that seems to engender dissent and confrontation? Our system of government is based upon our religion and that is what our people want. Should they seek alternatives, we are ready to listen to them. We have always said that our people should voice their demands openly. We are all in the same boat, and they are both the captain and the crew. Our doors are open for any opinion to be expressed, and this well known by all our citizens. It is our deep conviction that Allah has created people free, and has prescribed that each individual must enjoy freedom of choice. No one should act as if they own others. Those in the position of leadership should deal with their subjects with compassion and understanding, because this is the duty enjoined upon them by Allah, who enjoins upon us to treat all living creatures with dignity. How can there be anything less for mankind, created as Allah’s vicegerent (Khalifa or Caliphate) on earth? Our system of government does not derive its authority from man, but is enshrined in our religion and is based on Allah’s Book, the

Quran. What need have we of what others have conjured up? Its teachings are eternal and complete, while the systems conjured up by man are transitory and incomplete.” Land, homes, schooling and medical care were offered for free. Financial support was given to anyone who approached with an approved business plan, especially if it were coming from a group of eager team-working nationals and individuals. Abu Dhabi prospered and grew, and with this growth he allowed the erection of temples, churches and places of worship to the large number of growing expatriates. This leniency reflected well on the tourists and the workers. Yet all within the borders that respected the local culture of exposed skin and limited public display of affection. Women, via his wife, Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, were driven forward and encouraged to be more. Education, driving, working opportunities flourished and the once shy females began to hold managerial positions in the emirate and were the first to appoint a lady judge too. A strong woman, Sheika Salama, his mother, had had a powerful position when she was alive, raised him to respect and rear women. She helped guide and council her children when they were rulers, and requested that blood never be spilt between the brothers. Such was her word strong, that all obeyed it like it was a law engraved on stone. This was the father of our nation. And this is why he is remembered fondly.
