Why You Need a Will...

It’s important to make sure that after you die, your assets and possessions (known as your estate) will go to the people (known as your beneficiaries) you choose, such as family members and charities you want to support. Your estate includes your personal possessions, as well as assets such as: • Property (in the UK or overseas) • Savings and investments • Insurance funds • Pension funds If you die without a valid will, it could be difficult for your family to sort out your affairs. Your estate will be shared out according to the rules of intestacy. Under these rules, only married partners, civil partners, and certain close relatives can inherit your estate. If you and your partner are not married or in a civil partnership, your partner won’t have the right to inherit – even if you’re living together. Act now! Protect your assets and your loved ones before it’s too late.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about sustainability. Sustainability in design is obviously a hot topic, yet it comes from a place where the reality is the housing stock in this country is actually pretty poorly constructed, and when that happens it means we are immediately on the backfoot as far as sustainability and carbon footprint goes. This comes about because of that classic play-off between the environment and the wallet – they have never been good bedfellows and never will be, so we kind of get what we expect out of the equation.

What that means is that while our homes are typically not as sustainable or environmentally friendly as they might be, we compensate for that fact by trying to wrestle back a bit of positive contribution through our own daily lifestyle habits. In simple terms, that means all of us can turn the thermostat down, or look towards secondary glazing windows, or put more insulation in the attic. All of us can recycle more, can waste less, can grow our own vegetables, walk more, invest in electric technology, or simply just explore the idea of sharing more with our neighbours. All of these things reduce collective carbon and

environmental footprint, but most also share the idea of community and a common goal, and I think that’s just as important, because what you get from that is a project, and a resilience. Thus, when the big enemies come along, whether it’s Covid, or rising sea levels, or huge increases in the cost of living, it all means we don’t need to cower in the corner. Instead, we can act as communities and neighbourhoods, working together, growing stronger and more powerful all the time. Of course, real sustainability in construction really does come down to the building rather than the inhabitants, and that’s what we need to get across to the next generation of homebuilders. A lot of that will be about sharing what we have – after all, we have one planet, no back-up, and we know the resources are finite. We’ve perhaps made the mistake in the past of getting really hung up on carbon and its link to climate change and all that. In reality it’s all a bit more

complicated than that – it goes right from deforestation at the top to use of plastics and oil, the projection of the fish population, and a whole bigger side of sustainability that talks about things like high-performing concretes and cements that have a lot of recycled material in them… like blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash; like building with recycled stone and locally sourced wood materials, and investing in craftsmanship rather than mass-market ways of producing what we need.

When we source materials this way, we tend to value the relationship we have with them that bit more, so we are effectively redrawing the circle in a way that ensures we invest more in what we have. I’m really looking forward to a new wave of sustainability that goes right from the root, because as much as how we behave as people affects the environment, the way our homes are built in the first place determines so many of our actions, and the extent we need to go to in order to affect the same change.

Autumn Beauty Trends: Revealed From rustic to rugged, cosy to cool, autumn really is the season that offers so much, so get gorgeous over the next couple of months with these beautifying trends… we’ve even included a couple for the man in your life, too!

and truly back; so grab your lip liner and scarlet lipstick and prepare to pout your way through the autumn conversation.

Luscious hair Show off your shiny, luxurious hair this autumn as blow-dries make a comeback.

Longest lashes It’s easy to look sallow and tired as the days grow shorter, which is why it’s a great idea to open up those peepers with a little lash accentuation.

The end of 2022 represents a brave new world of hair, so think big, think voluminous, think like you just stepped out of a salon. Boardroom beauty Just as our work lives begin to return to normal, and the ‘work from home’ trend moves back to being the exception rather than the rule, so too does sophisticated, clean beauty return to the fore… whether it’s for the office or a social occasion. Think of matte skin, muted lips and perfectly groomed brows combining to create the perfect power look. And as for the men, well don’t be afraid to run a comb through those unruly brows for your own take on boardroom beauty. Statement lip For the last few years lips have been decidedly understated - either delicately glossed or hushed in fleshy tones. Yet after a slight renaissance over the past couple of years, the statement lip is now well 20

It’s important at this stage to state we’re not talking about stick-on lashes that weigh down your eyelids. Instead, the look focuses more on a combination of perfectly applied mascara and individual fake lashes, each applied just at the corners in order to create that gorgeous Sixties-inspired look. Pore-free skin Let’s be honest, flaky autumn flesh with dark shadows under eyes isn’t a good look for guys or gals, which is why you need to prime. The route to pore-free skin requires decent exfoliation, plenty of moisturiser and, naturally, a decent primer. Add concealer for where it matters and flourish in pore-free

perfection. Grunge goddess Finally, many of the looks to focus on this autumn and winter are all about high-gloss glamour, with grungy makeup offering something of a triumphant return. The message therefore is clear - sharpen that kohl eyeliner and revel in a rebel look which requires minimal skill whilst offering maximum impact. Team with a muted lip, flawless skin and dishevelled hair, don your surliest of scowls and hit the town.

They are very rare and typically customers have to travel long distances to get this very personalised service. As well as offering this service, the shop displays a comprehensive range of the finest quality ladies’ lingerie. The shop boasts a list of returning clients from many outlying areas throughout Yorkshire. The business is run from attractive and inviting ground floor retail premises, leased on a very affordable rent of just £550 per calendar month. The premises are currently zero-rated for business rates and therefore, the total overheads are very low. The business is priced very affordably and the owner is motivated to sell quickly in order to enable retirement. The premises may well be of interest to parties seeking high quality and affordable retail space within a bustling little village but surrounded by larger catchment towns. Meet Jayne! Choosing a new bra isn’t as simple as it first appears. Over the years our bodies change – after childbirth, when our weight goes up and down, during the menopause. Ideally, we should have our bra fitted every 6 months. But I’ve struggled over the years to find somewhere where I felt comfortable going for a bra fitting and that led to a gem of an idea which has grown over the years. And that was to open a bra shop which offered a comfortable and private environment with people who had experienced the same issues as you may be facing now. So, after undergoing professional training I opened Jayne’s Bespoke Lingerie, which does what it says on the tin. Our bras are bespoke, for people who struggle with buying a bra ‘off the shelf’. You may have a larger bosom or perhaps you are a smaller lady, either way, we will find you something to enhance your curves and make you feel a million dollars!

I offer a free fitting service. You can pop into the shop you don’t need an appointment. If you prefer a more private fitting you can book an appointment. Having a bra fitting can make a huge difference to your appearance and give you confidence! Many women have never had a bra fitting and have been wearing the wrong sized bras for years. They are missing out on so much, a well-fitted bra can improve your appearance and more importantly have health benefits. A well-fitted bra can improve your posture and alleviate symptoms caused by an ill-fitting bra such as pains in your back or shoulders.

What happens at my appointment? One to One consultation Many women are nervous the first time they have a fitting and don’t know what to expect. There’s no reason to be nervous we provide personal fitting rooms and cosy dressing gowns to preserve your modesty. We only need to measure your under band, the rest of the fit is by visually assessing your body shape and where your breast tissue is on your body. We prefer you to wear a bra as it lifts your breast tissue into the correct place, and we can give you your site from that assessment. Don’t

We’ll then bring you some new bras to try on, adjusting the straps until we get the fit just right.

Lots of new styles and colours to try This is the most exciting point in the fitting where you can explore styles and colours which really enhance your shape and, in some instances take pounds off! Gone are the days of unflattering bras that your mother used to wear or ill- fitting supermarket buys, welcome to a new world of confidence where you are proud to take off your clothes and explore the new styles and colours on offer.

Many of us will splash out on that special outfit and wear ill-fitting underwear. Your underwear really is the foundation of your outfit and should be your main priority. A well-fitting bra can improve your appearance and confidence, with and without your outfit!

human wellbeing, so produces something of a ‘double dividend’. 4. Keep the lawn long While it’s tempting to want to keep our lawns looking trim and pristine, longer grass means preserving the lifespan of pollinating insects and bees, which means the wildness of your garden can thrive as nature would prefer. 5. Eat less meat Meat and dairy combined are responsible for over 15% of climate-changing gases – that’s more than the contribution made by transport – so cutting down on that

Sunday roast is actually having a positive effect on the environment (as well as your waistline). 6. Shop less It is thought that a better understanding over expiration dates, and a greater reliance on our senses when it comes to working out whether food is safe to eat or not, would have a dramatic positive effect on food waste and, by association, the environment itself.

SIMPSON DENNIS ROOFING SERVICES Simpson Dennis is a family run business located in Mirfield. Customer satisfaction is the key to their success and many contracts are the result of word-of-mouth recommendation from many satisfied customers, who have been delighted with the prompt service, attention to detail and high standard of work that they have received from this firm. Their reputation has been built on strong foundations. Dennis has worked on major contracts around the country including restaurants for the Little Chef Chain, before starting his own business in Mirfield, 30 years ago. Simpson Dennis are approved by many leading insurance companies across the country, to not only carry out work on their behalf for insurance claims, but also to inspect new claims and produce a full report on their findings – a testimonial in itself to their excellent workmanship. “When searching for a roofer, people are often searching for the most competitive price, and when costs are under quoted for the job, you are often compensating in other areas such as quality of materials, service, time taken on the job and the

after care service. In my 30 years in business I have seen many companies come and go meaning that there is no aftercare provided and no guarantee on the work carried out” quotes Dennis. “It is a real shame when someone has made a long term investment such as this to their home; they find that when a problem arises, the firm they have used is nowhere to be seen. The old saying of “Pay Cheap, Pay Twice” unfortunately does mean just that when it comes to these things”. Simpson Dennis is quick to dissociate themselves from businesses like this and have often been called to fix problems for customers when the firm they have used originally have gone out of business. They cover a whole range of roofing services from small roof repairs, lead and chimney work, guttering and pointing, to large re-roofing contracts for the domestic market and only use the highest quality of materials. They are qualified and insured, which gives you the peace of mind needed, that they will carry out all work to a very high standard and can fulfil their guarantees.

Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Changing Spaces

HOME & GARDEN

Eight small changes that can transform any room. 1. Follow the light Lamps are the easiest way to positively alter the entire mood and vibe of a room. They’re cheap, come in a range of styles and looks to suit your interior, and the transformation is quick! 2. Go green Plants will bring life and colour to an otherwise drab space. They also improve your air quality, making them well worth the extra care and attention they require. And breathe… 3. Hang out Whether it’s a favourite record, childhood photo or quirky cartoon that made you smile once, art is a great way to really personalise your home. 4. Shelve it As well as providing an excellent way to maximise storage in a room,

shelves have the ability to become a feature in their own right if you fill them with interesting books and mementos. 5. Make a statement A unique piece of furniture can bring to life an otherwise unremarkable space, so hunt down that vintage cocktail globe or shabby chic chaise longue! 6. Go throw Is your sofa looking a little tired? Has your bed seen better days? Then throw a throw on it - the bold and brighter, the better.

7. Rug doctor A decent rug can really tie a room together, with the chance to complement colour, texture and the type of look you’re going for. 8. Reflect Mirrors will bring light and space to an otherwise gloomy room, if positioned towards windows and given the occasional wipe!

Mirfield Educational Charity It is always pleasing to hear when a scheme comes together. At their outdoor adventure centre at Little Deer Wood Shepley Bridge, Kirklees Adventure Trust offers opportunities for children and young people to take part in adventurous activities. In August 2020 the Trust had an archery range. Provided ten years previously as a temporary measure it was unsuitable for wheelchairs and people with mobility and balance problems. To increase the activities to be offered, the Trust resolved to install a multi-use games area on the site of the range. This was no small undertaking; the total cost would be over £64,000. Impressed by the ambition of an organisation that was named Charity of the Year at the Kirklees Inclusion and Diversity Awards in 2020, the Mirfield Educational Charity awarded the Trust a grant of £8,000. The pandemic hindered progress and hurdles have had to be overcome. However, in May this year the work was completed. In addition to archery, canoeing and climbing, the Trust can now offer access to wider choice of sports such as tennis, netball, basketball, football and cricket. This enables candidates to achieve the physical activity element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. 00 72

In October 2021, Mirfield Educational Charity awarded £7,000 to Crossley Fields School to re stock their library. In addition to the challenges and privations of the pandemic the school had the extra sadness of losing a well-loved teacher. Laura Croft had a passion for reading. That passion and her heroic battle against cancer, inspired a whole school topic: “Heroes and Villains”. That theme runs through many of the titles now available so that the children are excited, engaged and challenged to read texts that they may not necessarily have chosen themselves. Each class has at least forty books displayed in such a way that the children can see clearly what books are on offer. The charity is thus both delighted and humbled to be associated with a scheme that in attempting promote a lifelong passion for reading is at the same time a touching and fitting tribute.

in the Kids’ Zone. At their meeting in May the trustees made a grant to cover the cost of this attraction which will feature tightrope walking, trampolining and stilt walking in a way that is both educational and fun. Also in May the trustees awarded £1,000 to Upper Hopton Cricket Club towards the cost of replacing the square whilst £3,500 was awarded to an individual towards the cost of tuition fees as she embarked upon a further degree. The trustees look forward to meeting again on 11th October 2022 and are keen to receive applications for grants for educational purposes on behalf of people under the age of 25 who live in Mirfield. Further information may be had of the Clerk, Malcolm Parkinson parkinson922@btinternet. com who would be pleased to receive applications by 30th September 2022

Return of The Mirfield Show! The time is fast approaching and we are very excited to bring back Mirfield Show from an absence of two years. Put Sunday 21st August in your diary for a fun packed day for all the family. As this is a special year for our country the main theme of the day is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. You will see references to this fantastic achievement all through the Show. Our Main marquee will be the hub of most of our competitions including flowers and vegetables, baking classes, children’s classes, handicraft, and creative writing. Also in the main marquee will be our small livestock displays including a return of Eggucation – egg hatching on the day and throughout the day. Made in Yorkshire will be hosting the craft marquee, Yorkshire made products as well as artisan products too. Joining them in the craft marquee will be “free crafts for kids”, supported by Natasha Jackson Ceramics and Woven in Kirklees. There will also be a packed “high street” of stalls on the field for a spot of shopping. The main ring will start off with the horse and Pony Show. Later it will also be featuring the Stannage Stunts team 00 76

who do amazing things on motorcycles, as well as an owl display, the ever-popular local dance schools, a visit by the Rockwood Harriers hound pack. The day will finish off with a special “End of the Show” show featuring singer and actress, Karen Clegg, and guests. Bring, or better still make, your own Jubilee flag and get ready to wave it and join in with the show and party. Karen will be judging and there will be a prize for the Best Flag. Around the field and into Crowlees school grounds there are many, many more attractions. These include Pinxton puppets, Music stage, Grange Moor Brass Band, Fun Dog Show, Children’s soft play area, Kidz zone, bungee trampoline, ride on train, agricultural demonstration, goats and milking demonstration, bees, and lots more. As always there will be a bar and plenty of opportunities to buy delicious food – or maybe just bring your own picnic.

Eat,Drink, Drink,Repeat Repeat Eat,

Dog Days aren’t over Almost 45% of dogs in the UK are classed as veterans, and if we respond quickly and proactively to the early signs of old age, we have the chance not only to make those latter years happy, but to actually prolong them. Here are five ways to keep your dog alert and alive for longer. 1. Adapting exercise Your buddy may not be able to embark on the long walks they used to, so try to adapt the strolls so that the distance is sensible, the terrain is kind on ageing paws, and the excursions are perhaps shorter, but more regular – so three casual outings a day rather than one long slog. And on these walks, it’s also worth considering the fact that as dogs age, so too does their hearing and eyesight deteriorate, so try to keep them close to you at all times. 2. Social contact Typically we find ourselves fawning over puppies and younger dogs. While our older friends have enjoyed all that pampering in their youth, the veteran pooches are these days more ignored, so it’s important to reach out and connect with them. 82

Consider yourself to be a foodie? Then Consider to be a foodie? Then you willyourself love these destinations where you will love these destinations where the cuisine is the top tourist attraction. the cuisine is the top tourist attraction.

Sure, you might not get the same bountiful response, but typically older dogs live with older owners in quieter communities, so interacting with them when out is a great way to keep them connected. 3. Good food The older our pets get, the more we need to help them replenish,

and diet is especially important if we are to ward off aches and pains as best we can. Buying food relative to the dog’s age is vital, as is factoring in the idea that your pet may prefer to eat lying down if being on their feet for too long is painful. Beware though, eating in a flat position can lead to digestive issues, so try to split food into several portions throughout the day. And just because your animal

is in his or her later years, it doesn’t mean that the appeal of a treat lessens, so keep them excited and full of joy with tasty snacks and chews. 4. Grooming The feeling of contact and kinaesthesia is something every dog likes, and by putting in place a regular grooming routine, not only can you achieve this, but it will also afford you time to check for lumps, bumps, inspect bites or patchy areas on your dog. Effectively, you’re offering a health check and a massage in one! 5. Water The secret to all life - ensuring a plentiful supply of water is one thing, but encouraging your dog to drink as much as possible is really important. It will keep them active, alert and on the move, as well as making them more likely to want to venture out into the fresh air for a toilet break.

Year 6 Transition Day at Castle Hall Academy Going from primary school to secondary school can create a wide range of emotions for students and parents; apprehension, anxiety and excitement to name a few. That’s why it’s important for Castle Hall Academy (part of Impact Education Multi Academy Trust) to form strong relationships and build trust with their upcoming students before they start in September. Transition days allow primary students to meet their new classmates for the following academic year, while getting them comfortable in a larger setting through a mixture of engaging lessons. This year Castle Hall Academy hosted a record number of first choices from all Mirfield primary schools. The academy was inundated with positive feedback from families, with one parent saying “My son has really enjoyed transition day and is looking forward to starting in September” and another saying “My daughter said her day was very interesting and she enjoyed everything” Students sampled their knowledge-rich curriculum throughout the day, from being hands-on during an experiment in a science lesson, to speaking another language in a Spanish class. The students also made full use of the extensive outdoor space at Castle Hall Academy by taking

part in a variety of PE lessons on the playing fields. After indulging in a delicious lunch from Impact Education Catering (holding a 5-star rating across all Impact Education acadmies), the academy also invited Animals UK to host an exciting workshop with a significant emphasis on making learning fun whilst ensuring the lesson was educational and interactive. Students held a variety of animals and insects, including a tarantula, a fox ferret and many students chose to hold a 6ft long snake! Following a very positive day, the academy awarded students with a certificate that displayed one of their Characteristic of Good Learners; Reasoning, Resilience, Responsibility, Reflection and Respect. The academy was very pleased at the amount of positive feedback they received and that students left feeling

more confident about starting in September - “My daughter has much more confidence about high school now after today” and ‘Thank you for today my son loved it, he feels much better now after seeing familiar faces from previous visits and open evening”. If you’d like to know more about Castle Hall Academy, please visit their website: www.castlehall.com or contact the academy on: 01924 520500 or office@castlehall.com. Colour Conflict The fashion experts seem to be at odds with one another. Some believe autumn and winter fashion will retain the pastel shades that have patterned so much summer sheen; others are ready to embrace the greys and blacks of rainy days that will surely follow as the months trip by.

All questions are general knowledge based. Unscramble the shaded letters to find the name of one of the advertisers in our magazine. Send your entries to Jenna@themirfieldword.co.uk and one of the lucky entries will win £50.00 to spend with any of the business features this month... Good Luck!

Which suits you best? Look great in greys Sustainability has been a massive theme on the runways for a good few years now, yet the colours on show have often gone against a mood of caution and care. That’s why the adoption of grey shades is an interesting shift in 2022, with designers intimating the colour represents a change of pace, where thought and intelligence in grey knocks back the buoyant, acidic tones that patterned the shop windows in previous years. Black to basics While, in the past, black has found itself mixed with bright shades to provide contrast, for the latter months of 2022 the message is to embrace the very darkest, deepest and shiniest elements of this moody colour. Ink blacks are the perfect exemplar of this image according to the fashion houses, with a typically neutral

colour being encouraged to take centre stage. Keeping in with pinks and purples Once considered the choice of the very old, the very young or the reckless, pinks and purples is very much in. From dusky and elegant pinks at Marc Jacobs, to more violent blue and peach shades at Matty Bovan, the beautifully coloured tones have spread right the way through to hair colour. Yellows and oranges The lighter the pastel shades you adopt, the more you need to factor in the limitations of paler complexions. That said, lighter tones perfectly complement delicate shades such as dreamy lilacs (whereas darker skins look fab with bold yellows and rich peach hues). Nature’s nod Any kind of green or blue shade generally feels more outrageous when it comes to our clothes colours, but these can still retain a feminine edge, particularly

when you choose a lighter tint. Beige has had its day The move to brown in recent years is as a direct reaction to beige, which many consider has been overdone in the past couple of years. While beige offers a versatility that brown doesn’t, the fashionistas have put their weight behind a brazenly 1970s look. And don’t forget about… white While other colours and tones may be tipped to dominate, the old favourite white will always be cleaning up in the background. Famously versatile, endlessly expressive and with more shades and variations than any other colour, the only downside to white is the washing powder bill!
