Personal Training is for Everyone! Have you thought about getting in shape, but need a little motivation and a personalized plan to help meet your goals? Then meet Nevena, a UAB Campus Rec personal trainer that does it all! She is finishing up a master's in Clinical Nutrition and Diatetics at UAB and can show you the ropes at the Campus Rec Center! Whether it's on the track, in the weight room, or in the pool, she can help direct your workouts in order to reach your fitness goals. Nevena is a firm believer that personal training is for everyone and carefully gears her plans according to clients' needs. She says, "sometimes, it is just stretching... sometimes it's only cardio... and sometimes it's only pool training." But regardless, it's up to you and your specific goals! One of her many personal training success stories came from a female client that had never ran a day in her life. After training with Nevena and gaining motivation, the client was able to drop over 30 lbs and "step by step, she came to run a half marathon in two hours!" You can be a success story, too! There are so many resources and equipment that the UAB Campus Rec Center offers! Nevena is a big fan of accessories such as gliding discs, BOSU balls, kettle bells, medicine and exercise balls, bands, and dumbbells. She believes "that the best workouts can be done without machines. Using accessories teaches people proper technique and how to exercise in convenience of their homes." She not only trains and creates personalized workout plans, but also instructs Ufit classes such as Spinning, Abs, Sets & Reps and Body Blast. If you are interested in personal training, group training or taking any of the Ufit classes, then do not hesitate to contact your Campus Rec facility at fitness@uab.edu.

Diversify Your IM Sports Repertoire! During the spring semester UAB Intramural Sports will be rolling out a variety of Intramural sports for participants to partake in. We will be offering our traditional league sports: Basketball, Indoor Soccer, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Softball, as well as our newest addition, Indoor Flag Football! I know what you’re thinking, are they allowed to offer two semesters of Flag Football!? Isn’t that too much of a good thing!? Well yes and no. We feel that Flag Football is something that the students, faculty, and staff at UAB just can’t get enough of. In order to make the experience different for returning Flag Football players, we have decided to move the game indoors to the gym.

Did You Step Up? Campus Rec just hosted the 8th annual Health and Wellness Fair "Step Up to Wellness" this past Friday, February 3, 2011. More than 60 organizations attended to help inform the community on how to live a healthy lifestyle!

To go along with playing on a smaller playing surface, we have tweaked some of the rules in order to accommodate competitive game play. The biggest difference between offering indoor versus outdoor is that Indoor Flag football will be played 5 on 5. Traditional Flag Football is played 7 on 7 but the playing field is much larger. We expect this 5 on 5 game of Flag Football to be faster paced with both teams finding the end zone more often. It is essentially an arena brand style of football that should be fun to both play and watch! A complete list of rules will be coming soon, so be sure to continue checking out our intramural page on our website at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter so that you can study up on the league’s nuances. We are also offering a large variety of events and tournaments in the Spring. These events and tournaments include:

Step Up to Wellness offered many opportunities to test attendees' health including free body fat testing, blood pressure screening, fitness testing, and much more. The Trak Shak was on deck to watch you walk and recommend correct shoes and local Spa’s educated on skin rejuvenation. Other vendors included Balance Chiropractic, Alabama Organ Center, American Red Cross, Pregnancy Test Center, EatRight, and many more. This free event was fun and informative!

We want to put our best up against the best competition around the country.

The Few, the Proud, the WFR Certified! Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is the most recognized level of training for wilderness protocol. This course is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. This course will teach you how to save lives and reduce further injury in emergency situations when medical assistance is not readily available. If interested in the gaining certification, then contact the OP office at 205- 996-4913 or outdoor@uab.edu.

New Classes are Making a Splash! The Aqua Zumba class is turning into a tidal wave of success! The class which started on January 11, 2012 has maxed-out the provided space ( lap lanes 1 & 2 ) on both of its previous meetings and if the patron numbers continue to grow - a request for a third lap lane is being considered! The Scuba Diving class is making bubbles, according to Mark Di Giorgio, Padi Master instructor; the numbers are good for a start-up class. So if you are interested in getting your feet wet and learning to dance or dive in the water, check our UFit schedule online at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter and join us today! Please keep in mind that the aquatics staff is able to accommodate special needs upon request, i.e. swim classes for females with a female instructor and the “water Joey,“ which is aquatic exercising for expectant moms - for more information please email or call Donald Sanders at drs@uab.edu or 205-996-5037.

Sink or Swim! Will a concrete canoe sink or float? When UAB Senior Civil Engineering majors are in charge, the answer is float... in a Blaze of Glory! And of course you know that UAB Campus Rec Aquatics Director Don Sanders would not anything sink in his pristine pool! Daniel Brown, Matt Coe, Ethan Parker, Joe Phillips, and Paisley Marotta are ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) members preparing for the Southeast Student Conference competition. This test model, coined Blaze of Glory, weighs approximately 170 lbs and measures about eight feet in length. These engineering masterminds started from scratch. After a lot of hard work, time, and personal funding, they are now focused on building the full-sized, 20 feet long concrete canoe in order to race in the competition. The competition is March 22-24 in Tallahassee, Florida and more information can be found here: www.eng.fsu.edu/asce2012/competitions.php. Good luck crew, and GO BLAZERS!

Keep it up and follow these helpful tips! Nutrition Tip: Pair your meal with a cup of fat-free or low-fat milk. They provide the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories. Don’t drink milk? Try soymilk (soy beverage) as your beverage or include fat-free or low-fat yogurt in your meal. Courtesy: United States Department of Agriculture Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (June 2011).

Fitness Tip: Did you know that you spend the same amount of calories if you run 1 mile in 20 minutes or 1 mile in 5 minutes!! So it is distance what counts. If you are in a crunch with your time, do a shorter workout with higher intensity. Training Tip: TO BURN FAT OFF YOUR MUSCLE, DO MULTIPLE SETS USING LIGHTER WEIGHTS AND HIGHER REPETITIIONS! Take minimum rest between sets in order to keep your heart rate up!! Example: 10 pushups (or modified pushups on your knees) followed with 15 body weight squats would be one set. Do 3-5 sets with minimal rest in between sets. You can also participate in one of these new UFit classes offered through March 18th: Sun: Dance at 5pm M/W: Crunk at 6am Tues: Water Tone & Walk at 6:30am - pool Wed: Aqua Zumba at 5:30pm - pool Thurs: Spin Class at 6am Fri: Yoga-lates at 7:30am
