9. Curiosities 1. Why do irons have a triangle shape? Because, that way, the wide part can iron large clothes and large parts of clothes; and the narrow end or tip can iron small clothes or small parts.

2. Irons existed in the 4th century, but the name “iron� began in the 18th century.

Personal Comments • Irons keep clothes looking good and new for a long time. • In the future they will be cold not hot; they will work with solar power instead of electricity; and they will work alone, like robots, without a person: they will be intelligent. • Irons have evolved a lot since the 4th century. In the past women had to be very strong to hold an iron because irons were very heavy.
