Good to see local democracy in action, listening to both sides of the argument Diane before making a decision. The turn-out at this month’s Parish Council meeting was extraordinary but it showed when residents are passionate enough about a subject they will get involved. The decision taken by MPC was to continue with the ‘status quo’ and not to deactivate the zipwire or roundabout, but as you’ve Nora probably read on the front cover one item has been put out of action, albeit temporarily, due to a safety problem on the seat fixing. Likewise on the front cover you will see images of the gym equipment and table tennis table that will be installed in the same area in the near future - see the notice on page 16. Plans for a multi-use games area and upgrading of the skatepark are Henry also in the pipeline and funding is being sought for these. Interested in becoming a Parish Councillor? Then read the notice on page 6 for further details. The police report on page 11 makes mention of a dispersal order for nuisance vehicles at Manston Industrial Park. Will this stop the motorcyclist(s) using the top Diane road late at night as a racetrack - probably not!! Maybe there has been a problem on the industrial park for a number of years but it is only recently that we’ve been plagued by motorcycle(s) on the top road so the two areas may not even be related. MM have had recent reports that the main protagonist appears to come Diana up from the village to race his bike along the top road - if that’s you then be aware you have been reported and residents will continue the fight to get something done about it if you choose to continue. Some moan about the church bells early in the evening (which personally I love to hear!), however lots of unnecessary noise at night deserves action from the authorities - it just isn’t acceptable. late Kevin Also in the police report there is a piece about them starting a ‘kick boxing’ club in the village - so something else to help keep our youths occupied - it all helps to keep the boredom and anti-social behaviour down, so let’s hope it ‘takes off’. Well that’s about it, just room to ask -”Where’s Zac?”

NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER MISSED APPOINTMENTS QUESTION? Why should so many patients bother to make an appointment and THEN NOT TURN UP? ANSWER : I don’t know - BUT 137 PATIENTS DO !!!!!!! BECAUSE LAST MONTH 65 PATIENTS DID NOT attend their DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT! 72 PATIENTS DID NOT attend their NURSES APPOINTMENT! SO THAT’S 137 PATIENTS WASTING VALUABLE APPOINTMENTS and TIME! So we therefore must remind patients, that in accordance with NHS policy, action may be considered against repeat offenders. If you need to cancel an appointment it is very SIMPLE - Call the normal surgery number 821333 - Press 1 and just leave your details - AUTOMATICALLY! SO PLEASE - DON’T BE A TIME WASTER - DON’T NEED IT - CANCEL IT ! KEEP FORGETTING - REGISTER ! One day IT MIGHT BE YOU who urgently needs an appointment only to be told : “SORRY THEY’VE ALL GONE”! “I WANT GREAT CARE” CAMPAIGN (The Friends and Family Test) What do you really think about your surgery? Would you recommend us to your friends and family? This is the question that all practices now have to ask their patients and are contractually obliged to obtain a response. We therefore invite you to rate the care and treatment you receive from the surgery, and leave your comments at Naturally, all replies are in strict confidence. SEASONAL WINTER FLU VACCINATIONS Vaccination Clinics will be held on the following days, Saturday 4 October and Saturday 1 November between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm. Appointments are STILL available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. If you have any concerns about eligibility please speak to the receptionist. OUR NEW PROJECT Our next project is to purchase: “A PORTABLE ECG MACHINE WITH ASSOCIATED PRINTER” This has been identified as as being a valuable asset by the District Nursing Team and Health Visitors, considering the increase in the number of home visits that are having to be made. It will give them the ability, to identify any heart related problems, on site at the patients home, and obtain an immediate print-out to present to other health care workers if necessary. We will be launching this at the first Flu Day on Saturday 4 October and are very pleased to announce that this year our raffle will be sponsored by “Andraes Photography” who have donated some great prizes, especially for Christmas. Everyone who buys tickets will be given a voucher for a free photographic session. The raffle will be drawn at our Christmas Bazaar as usual. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Our Christmas Bazaar will be held on: Saturday 15 November at “Old SCchools” in Church Street Tables remain at £9 large or £6 small And of course “FREE ENTRANCE” Several tables have already been sold and only a few remain so BOOK NOW to avoid disappointment. SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00 noon on the following days for staff training: Wednesdays 22nd October and 19th November. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these periods. Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821 333 and you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111 to receive “non urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For Urgent/Life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. Letter from a Concerned Resident The recent letter sent by TDC regarding the changes to the Electoral Role and the creation of an Open Register is not clear. Having checked with TDC I discovered that you MUST request a form to prevent your name and address being on the open register and being sold to all and sundry. You can do this by phone or email; state how many voters there are at your address and TDC will send a form and pre-paid envelope for each person. The form is extremely simple and only needs to be ticked, signed and dated. If you do not want to be bombarded with junk mail and cold calling it is worth taking a few minutes to do this. Good luck. On Sunday 31 August 2014 we set off on the 10th Annual ‘Ride to Remember’ in memory of Jake Philpott. As always friends and family turned out for this very special bike ride. The weather was fantastic and we set off from the British Legion at 11am, about 45 people all dreading that head wind along the sea wall to Reculver, but as always they just dug deep and got the energy from somewhere and we had made it and then on through all those familiar lanes, and up all those killer hills, of course stopping at all the watering holes along the way. The day had a great atmosphere as we were joined at the stops by the younger members of our big family, including the “newest” two, Ryder, Levi and Jim's son and Dawson, Natasha and Dan's son, which was really nice.[and lots of dogs this year, a real family day out] The whole day was a massive success. Huge thanks go to Doreen and her now infamous curry and lasagne and Cynth and Sue for all their help too, thank you to Alan for having his truck on standby for pick-ups. But thanks most of all to all the wonderful people who joined us and made the day so special for Hayley and Dave. Lastly a special mention goes to Cobi Smith who at only 10 years old, completed the whole 24 miles, lost the skin off his knees from a skidding stop, but still managed to finish with a smile on his face, well done mate. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE P.S. See you all again next year xxx.

Well same here, it’s been very quiet at home just a bit of hair pulling from you know who whilst he was putting this issue together, but I’ve known it to be worse. Seems it has been Mum who has had most of the problems this month. Mosquito’s those vicious little flying bugs that eat you whilst you sleep!!! They’ve been the bane of her life, firstly whilst out gardening and then later in bed. I’ve heard her say she’s been ‘eaten alive’. I know other residents have spoken to Dad on the phone about them as well, particularly asking if the dykes etc are being sprayed this year to kill off the larva. Well I don’t know what the policy is on that but maybe someone reading this (if of course anyone actually does), will be able to enlighten us as to whether or not that is likely to happen. Well it looks like I’ve run out of space to say much more, maybe I’ll have other adventures to tell you about next month - stranger things have happened!!

JACK’S BORNEO TRIP I’m back!! and I've had an amazing time in Borneo. Project work included building foundations for a kindergarten, cleaning the beaches of debris, building a community toilet, reconditioning village wells, restoring a youth centre, clearing areas to allow us to plant 220 trees, and clearing 5 kilometres of forest trail. I slept in a hammock in the jungle, stayed in mud huts in a rural village, showered with water straight from a muddy river and came across some very large spiders!! I have experienced so much in my expedition and the knowledge and skills I learnt will stay with me forever. I want to thank everybody who has helped me with all my fundraising and for all the support people have given me. The people of Minster have been amazing and so have friends and family. People have helped me in so many different ways and thanks to all your kindness and generosity I have had the trip of a lifetime. To welcome me back home after my month long expedition we had a wonderful meal at Minster Tandoori with 40 of my friends and family where we all enjoyed lovely food. Thanks to Ali and his staff for all their hard work. And once more a massive thank you to everyone who helped me to achieve my goal. Residents of Minster, I would like to start by thanking those of you who attended the recent Parish Council meeting and provided an extremely valuable input into the discussion around the new play area. This was a community issue that produced varied opinions, yet the discussion remained polite and constructive throughout which as a police representative I was truly grateful for. Kent Police, along with Minster Parish Council, and other community partners have continued to identify potential youth activities which can be instigated in the village, and we are actively working together to develop more facilities in the area for younger residents. There is currently a ‘Rural Youth Service’ club running every Friday evening at the pavilion and to date attendance has been strong, with positive feedback from those present. I will be attending as regularly as possible, and would encourage anyone interested to attend as well as it is an excellent resource in the community, and they are seeking feedback from younger residents in the village as to what activities they would like on offer. Kent Police are also looking to develop a kick boxing club in the village in the immediate future to supplement existing youth activities. This will be a unique service

provided by officers of Kent Police; hopefully it will be an exciting, new activity for people to try and will attract a large number of people. Kent Police have also successfully introduced a dispersal order at the Manston Industrial Park which has been affected by nuisance vehicles for several years now. The order will allow us to disperse any vehicles associated with anti-social behaviour from the area for 24 hours, and if they return without a legitimate reason they will be liable to arrest. Kent Police will be dedicating considerable resources to this tasking, and we remain optimistic it can have a significant impact on the number of vehicles attending the area. The order will commence on Friday 19 September 2014, and will be active to the 19 December 2014. Lastly as we approach the darker evenings the emphasis turns to home security. Kent Police will be giving out advice to residents about how best to secure properties, but they are also more than happy to attend community groups to deliver talks as well. So if you would like this service please feel free to contact me to arrange our attendance. Kind regards PCSO Steven England

MINSTER WI After her Presidential welcome to members and visitors to the September meeting - and Jerusalem - Sarah thanked those who made the Minster Show float and stall such a success, raising £151.70. She reported that the evening was lovely and could become an annual event to be enjoyed by members and their families every August. The September speaker, Rosemary Crippen astounded everyone with her talk entitled ‘Beads, Bangles & Embroidered Books’. Her ideas and brilliant designs were fascinating to see and members really applauded Rosemary’s skill. Next month’s meeting will have “hands-on craft” instruction with members producing their own Christmas decoration. Following refreshments, Sarah outlined future events, such as the WI Centenary celebrations, next year, when afternoon tea at the Sands Hotel, Margate is proposed. Also trips to Bruges and Ypres in October. Sarah appealed for teapots, trays etc for the “Steel Magnolias”cream teas, a fund-raising event at the end of September in conjunction with Minster Playhouse. Following the raffle Sarah closed the meeting with her thanks to everyone for the support she has received during her first year as President. MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING Hello All The Race Night we held at the Royal British Legion on Saturday 6 September was a fun and successful event, although the attendance was lower than we would have liked. However, there was a goodly noise as the horses were cheered on to the winning post. Many thanks go to the Legion for providing both the helpers and the venue and also for joining in the goodwill, especially the two younger helpers who did rather well on the raffle. The new way of drawing the raffle was novel and well accepted, once it had been fully explained. Winning your chosen prize only added to the expectation and pleasure of the evening. The funds were enhanced by the re-donation of the hamper as it subsequently raised another £25 in the auction. We will definitely adopt this method at some of our other events. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported us so well. The Association entered a team for a Quiz being held in support of the RNLI on Saturday 13 September and we’re pleased to say that second place was attained. We need more practice! Our Quiz Night is running at the Royal British Legion on Saturday 11 October, 7.30pm for 8.00pm. We need teams of 6 to 8 people at £5 per person, which as always will include a delightful buffet. We will also be holding a raffle on the evening. This is proving popular with 4 tables booked already. Please ring Carol on 07745 683 466 to secure your place. The AGM will be held in the Neighbourhood Centre this year on Friday 14 November at 7.30pm, please come along, so that you can give us some ideas of things you’d like us to do in the village. All welcome, remember to use the side entrance. Although the Anniversary Celebrations seem a million miles away, it is something that needs thinking about soon. The event will be in ArmboutsCappel next year and we are hoping to have enough people interested in joining us so that we can book a coach for Sunday 24 May 2015. Again please contact Carol on 07745 683 466. Remember you can find us at: or on our Facebook page. Thanks as always.

Charity event for 'Breast Cancer Campaign' Mick and Pauline Bedwell would like to thank all those who attended the 'Off Key Music Festival' on Saturday 23 August. Our thanks especially go to our wonderful friends and family who helped make this event such a success, without their help it would not have been possible. The whole thing came about because we had been so impressed by the accomplishment of our friend Graham Burns running the London marathon earlier this year whilst singing karaoke for 26.2 miles in aid of 'Breast Cancer Campaign', that we decided to do something to help Graham boost his 2014 fund raising total up to £10K! Breast Cancer Campaign asked him to run the Great North Run in September - not really expecting him to raise any more money - they wanted to use his recently acquired fame to attract attention for the charity. Denise Lewis had interviewed him on Tower Bridge - he was on the television!

Minster Matters

Those of you who know Graham will know why we choose a 'Music Festival' as our theme for a charity event! Graham was (obviously) the star… singing his heart out, as he did on marathon day and recently on the Great North Run. We invited other talented people to come along and perform on the day. Great fun was had by all. The sun shone as well as a couple of light showers (it was a festival after all!). Approximately 180 people came along and they all seemed to enjoy themselves AND we raised over £2,500 for Breast Cancer Campaign!

A MOVING EXPERIENCE IN MINSTER Having lived very happily in Minster for more than 10 years, my friend and I wholeheartedly agreed with the sentiments expressed by ‘Yvonne’, in the September Minster Matters, about the pleasures of living in Minster village. Until August 4th that is, when, with our family of small dogs, we moved to a new address within the village and, during the next 3 weeks, experienced a series of events from which we are still reeling! Just 4 days after the move, I tripped over a doorstep and fell heavily, dislocating my shoulder, spraining my ankle and sustaining severe bruising to one side of my face and head, was taken by ambulance to A&E and returned with my right arm in a sling, to face four weeks of sleeping in an armchair. Our neighbours, a friendly young couple with a new baby, who lived at the end of a nearby terrace of seven houses, called in offering sympathy and support, including the use of their two road cones to help save a parking space outside our new home, as I was virtually unable to walk and my friend needed to take our dogs out in the car once each day, in addition to caring for me. Another neighbour almost immediately expressed her anger about our use of the cones and, when my friend explained that we were using them because I am already registered as a disabled person and my difficulties had been exacerbated by a fall, she replied that 'everyone has problems'. A Police Officer called at our house to tell us that a rear window of my car, parked outside our house, had been smashed in. A second neighbour made her disapproval clear to my friend, who again explained our exceptionally difficult circumstances, and about my application for a disabled parking bay. The neighbour replied that 'everyone' disliked the use of the cones, but denied that anyone living in the terrace would have vandalised my car. Water dripped through the ceiling from a faulty plumbing connection in the upstairs WC. A third neighbour, walking home from the British Legion Club, picked up the cones and threw them into another neighbour's garden. I asked him why and he accused me of thinking I owned the whole road. I explained that our need to park outside our house was temporary and due to the extreme difficulties we were experiencing. He responded in an alarming manner, standing over me, jabbing his finger in my face and spilling out a torrent of threatening, abusive, sexist and homophobic foul language, all accompanied by a strong stench of alcohol. Severely shaken by this experience, I later fell a second time, severely wrenching all the muscles, tendons and ligaments in my left arm, rendering me completely ‘armless’ and with only one fully functioning leg! On route to shop for food, my friend was halted just outside the village by a flat tyre, later described by the attending AA man as a 'slit'. My friend dropped a large worktop on her foot, splitting her toe and causing severe bruising which limited her ability to walk

October 2014 or drive, and left us struggling to cope with just two working arms and legs between us! Our microwave oven ‘blew up’. Throughout this time our ability to contact the outside world was very limited. We waited 10 days for our landline to be connected following a visit by a BT engineer; our broadband access was finally achieved after four weeks, several visits from our personal computer guru (thank you Ray ), a new router, junction box and splitter; and we realised that our mobiles would only work in half the house or at the end of the garden! Our dogs, oblivious to the chaos all around them, settled quickly and happily into their new home, adapted well to the steep stairs (apart from one who runs up but then sits at the top crying to be carried back down) and thoroughly enjoyed the novelty of having me sleeping in the sitting room with them. The experience of our first 3 weeks in our new home has certainly been memorable!! However, we have now spoken with the residents of the remaining 4 of the 7 houses in the terrace, and established that none of them supported the unkind and unpleasant behaviour of the first three neighbours. This knowledge and the kind and generous support of numerous other Minster residents have served to restore our belief that Minster is a good place to live, and its residents are (mostly) friendly and caring people. We look forward to more happy years living in this beautiful village so blessed by Saint Mildred and her famous hind!

Embrace Your Space Using technology to improve where we live Embrace Your Space People powered innovation to improve where we live A major challenge takes place in East Kent this Autumn that aims to bring people and communities together to develop innovative ways of using technology to improve their area and we would be very grateful for your help in promoting this using the enclosed posters. ‘Transformed by You’ is asking people to put forward their ideas and bring them together with developers to find technology solutions. In the context of the huge challenges facing public services and society today, finding radical and effective ways of meeting social need is vital. This Transformed by you event, is the first project locally that seeks to bring local services and communities together to find practical ways to unlock the energy, enthusiasm and vast potential for innovation amongst communities, local groups, technology entrepreneurs and the frontline of public services. The challenge ‘Embrace Your Space’ is now open and people can start to put forward ideas or solutions to local issues through the website at Through the site people can make suggestions, comment on ideas put forward, link with others to form project groups and vote on ideas. The challenge takes place between early September and 29 November in three stages: Come up with bright ideas: People are invited to submit ideas for the challenge. This can be something they'd like to see solved through technology or propose a solution themselves.

They can look at and comment on the ideas others have put forward and even suggest improvements. This phase is about people and communities coming together to share ideas and find solutions. The ten best ideas submitted by 19 October will win prizes at the end of this stage. Development: As the ideas come in, local digital developers & designers are invited to come up with solutions and suggestions to them. You can work together on the ideas to ensure they are heading in the right direction. Transformed by you day - 29 November University of Kent People are invited to come along to the day to help turn their ideas into solutions and present them to a panel of judges on the day. An overall winner of the challenge will be chosen and a prize given to enable the winner to develop their solution further. People can sign up for the day now at The project is run by The Kent Connects partnership (strategic IT partnership for public services in Kent) which has a long history in delivering Transformed by You events. This year's East Kent event is being run in partnership with the University of Kent, Barclays Bank, and Deeson Group. We are also running a series of Recycling Roadshows around Thanet during September and October to offer people information, support and advice.

The Passing Years How amazing is life’s span. Imagine, I’m sure you can. A baby, first born, perhaps in the morn. Then one year, two; A decade later, can you? As the years pass; In the blink of an eye. One becomes, twenty, thirty and more. Until if fortunate, 60 be the score. Perhaps, seventy, even eighty, some more fortunate than others said before. Look at the photos, compare the eyes. You can see the child in the elderly lined face; Experienced and wise. Yvonne (now 80 years of age)

October 2014 School Council

House Captains At the end of the summer term, the new house captains were presented with their badges and some good advice from their predecessors. The new house captains were reminded that being a house captain meant to encourage and support everyone, to be resilient and do your very best. Being a house captain also means you need to work as a team and that good sportsmanship is really important. This year, the house captains are planning two mini house challenges each term that will take place at lunchtimes. This term there will be a Jenga competition and a dance-off. Saxon House

On Friday 12th September we held our School Council elections. Each junior child who wanted to run for a School Council position presented their mandate to their class before the class voted via a ballet box. We were joined by Jonathan Cole, one of our local Parish Councillors, to announce the winners in the afternoon assembly. The School Council will help to run our ‘Healthy School’ and ‘Eco-School’ awards as well as being the ‘voice’ of the children. Mrs Newman would like to say “thank you to all the children who ran for School Council and congratulation to those who were successful”. PALs (Playground Activity Leaders) On the first Monday of the term some Year 5 children spent the day with Mr McCarthy learning how to become PALs, this stands for Playground Activity Leaders. In the morning they were taught the skills they would need to lead playground games, such as good communication. There were lots of warm up exercises using the activities already on the playground. Some of the games they played were the human alphabet and the electric skipping rope. In the afternoon the PALs planned their own games and tried them out on each other.

Prefects Our new Prefects were also chosen at the end of the summer term. The Prefects at the moment are for terms 1-3 and then they will hand over the role to other Year 6 children who become Prefects for terms 4-6. The Prefects have already been busy helping Mrs Newman with this year’s school council vote. They will also be greeting the parents at the Key Stage 2 Harvest Festival at the church. The role of the Prefects is to set a good example and encourage other children to do the same and also to lend a hand to the adults when they need help with a task.

PALs are on the playground every lunchtime from 12.20 until the end of lunch and are there for everyone. Whether you are feeling a bit lonely one day or want to join in every day, everyone is welcome to join in.
