New Bus The very first No11, standing in Church St, awaiting passengers, bound for Canterbury. Shows what persistent people power can do. Well done Yvonne

Whilst trying to retrieve something from the loft our beloved Editor found himself in a bit of a predicament when he lost his

footing and fell awkwardly, resulting (quite a while later after a few hospital visits) with his leg in plaster. You can see Ray here temporarily swapping his usual four-wheeled vehicle for the Minster Mobile. Be sure to sign his cast, but be armed with a metallic pen, as he purposely chose a dark colour to opt out of the signing. Hope it heals quickly and painlessly. ‘MUSEUM UPDATE’ The response, as I understand it, to the request in last month’s magazine for possible volunteers, to help with a **NEW** Museum has so far not been very encouraging, but thank you to those who have replied. Sadly this may mean the idea is dropped which would be a great shame, as I believe it could again bring visitors into the village, which in turn could help our local economy and enable local businesses to remain afloat. PLEASE if you feel you could offer an hour or two, just once a week, once a month or whenever then do get in touch. I’ve been asked where it might be and although I am not at liberty to give an exact location (I expect there are however a lot who do already know) I can say it is in the heart of the village, and not away from the village centre. If it happens it will be totally inside, no exterior grounds or exhibits, so no wandering around on wet days with an umbrella. Obviously this also means there will not be any extremely large exhibits or animals, but the organisers feel we will still have plenty to be able to offer villagers and visitors alike. Do you feel you could maybe help, even in a small way, if so please contact Danny Day via the library or any of us here at Minster Matters. **** A PLEA FOR NEW DELIVERERS !!!! **** (Sorry but it’s an UNPAID position !!) We here at MM are in desperate need of a few volunteers to take on the monthly delivery of our magazine in the following 4 areas: 1/ Laundry Road plus Minster House; 2/ The Lanes/Thorne/Sevenscore/Ebbsfleet/Cliffsend 3/ Freemans Road inc Kenton Gardens; 4/ Northern half of the new Heronsbrook Estate. If you feel you can help us with any of these please contact one of the team, all our details can be found in column one on page two. ‘BROKEN BONES’ So who’s seen me out and about this month on ‘Sue Lovelock’s’ disability scooter, which was kindly donated to the village, in her memory? I’ve even had to buy some new batteries for my ‘Freegled’ stair-lift ! Have I had a ribbing? You bet I have and it gets worse when I tell people what I did. In case you are one of the few who probably doesn’t know, I did a David Beckham on my right foot and broke 2 metatarsals, not however playing football but, by falling from the banister onto my landing. That’s where the giggling starts, what would I be doing on the banister, well there have been lots of suggestions some of which have been a bit rude, but in actual fact I was extracting a box from my loft and was too lazy to get the steps out. I completed the operation then lost my handhold, knocked myself out for a few seconds (I think) on the bedroom door frame, came to and found I was unable to stand on my right foot, resulting in 6 weeks in plaster, don’t think I’ll do that again !! They say we learn by our mistakes - let’s hope I do. Don’t forget if you need use of the disability scooter, on short term loan, please contact MM or the Parish Office. Full hire details are available on the village website. I’ve been really glad of it over these past few weeks, especially as I couldn’t drive my car. Some say I was ‘milking it’ but I couldn’t have got up into the village without it.

STOP THE PRESS… VILLAGE GREENGROCERS TO REOPEN SATURDAY 8TH OCTOBER UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP. We are very pleased to officially announce the long awaited re-opening of the Village Greengrocers, soon to be re-labelled “Greens of Minster”. Having lived in Minster for many years, we felt it was a sad day when Stan finally closed his doors for the last time and another shop was lost from the village. We feel very privileged to live in Minster and love the strong caring community atmosphere that is apparent. We felt we had to do something to bring this resource back into use for us all to enjoy. You will see a lot has changed to the look of the shop, which we hope will be to your liking. Along with the expected high quality fresh fruit and vegetables on offer (not forgetting the friendly staff), we have added to the service: traditional sweets, fresh/dried herbs, dried fruit and nuts, cut flowers and florist service. We will also offer a gift service for that special person/occasion in mind, all made up from our quality stock, so please come in and see us for that gift with the personal touch. Our main objectives have been for sourcing quality, local stock and supporting local business whilst maintaining a keen eye on price. In the future, we hope to be able to expand our services further and are also open to your suggestions. We very much look forward to welcoming you in and being of service. With kind regards to you all, Toni and Caelan RECORDING STUDIO IN MINSTER - During 2010 I built and equipped a small recording studio in the garden of my home primarily for my own use, but it seems that there are a number of people who enjoy recording here in Minster, so I have decided to offer people the opportunity of visiting the studio and recording a song of their choice to a pre-recorded professional backing track, which they can take away on CD. The charge is normally £99 (however I am offering a special £75 rate for Minster Matters readers) for a 2 hour session, including the CD. For this they will get all the help they need including a Recording Engineer to obtain the best result from the visit, what they do with the CD from then on is up to them - The Next X Factor Winner?? Welcome you!

Would you be prepared to donate a few items for Christmas Shoe Boxes? The Shoe Boxes will be distributed to children living in poverty in Africa, Asia and Europe by Smile International in December (Charity Number 1079730). Some of the children will be orphans, others live in refugee camps, but all of them live in deprivation. For the majority of children, the Christmas Shoe Box will be their only Christmas present, and it will be much appreciated and will generate lots of excitement! Smile International is a charity passionate about helping to relieve poverty through the distribution of humanitarian aid, the Christmas Shoe Boxes is one of their projects. Karen and Jenny at Attwells newsagents have kindly volunteered to act as a collection point for Shoe Boxes or donation of contents. To spread the cost, we are asking the people of Minster to donate one or two items, (If any enthusiasts would like to do a whole Shoe Box on their own, that would be great!). The contents/donations can include: * a bar of soap and a flannel * tooth brush and tooth paste * hair brush, comb, hair slides * small toys, such as a doll, car, skipping rope, ball, bag of marbles, snap or other playing card games, writing and colouring materials - (All toys can be purchased at Attwells , along with stationery packs specially -made by Karen and Jenny). Lukas Jones, For further information about the charity Smile Volunteer Shoe box helper with some of International, leaflets are available at Attwells or phone me the 300 Shoe boxes on 823319. collected in 2010 Any items for the Shoe Boxes can be left with Karen and Jenny or delivered to Mary Lord at 33 Tothill Street (leave in the front porch) or delivered to me at 101 Tothill Street, by 20th November please. In grateful anticipation, Kate Humphreys. The Queens Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated by an extended Bank Holiday weekend , Saturday 2nd - Tuesday 5th June 2012. The Parish Council are considering how best to celebrate the event. To help them make a decision it would be helpful to know what events are already being planned by streets / organisations / businesses in the village. If you are planning an event or if you have particularly strong views on how the occasion should be marked and are willing to help organise an event then please let the Parish Council Clerk know. JAKE PHILPOTT MEMORIAL BIKE RIDE On Sunday 28th August, family and friends set out on the “7th Annual Jake Philpott memorial Bike Ride.” We start from the British Legion with blue sky and sunshine. We head off to Minnis Bay and along with other Bank Holiday visitors, stop for our first refreshments, but we must get going and get the long sea wall to Reculver out of the way; it always seems the worst bit; And it didn’t disappoint, because just over halfway the heavens opened and it was to be our first, but not last, soaking of the day. So we stop at the King Ethelbert, a drink and a dry off and then it’s off again “up hill and down dale” as they say with sunshine and showers thrown in, but everyone’s smiling and there are loads more stops to go yet so let’s get going... The Gate (nice food)... The Grove Ferry (great garden), The Rising Sun (dry seats)... The Dog and Duck (soft seats!!!) ... The British Legion... (we are back!!!) Thank you to Cynthia, Doreen and Sue for making sure we had plenty to eat when we arrived back after what was a gruelling, but satisfying and very enjoyable day. This year people kindly donated money, which will be going to Brighton Neurology Unit, where Ricky Atkins spent 2 weeks recovering from head injuries earlier in the year. Thank you to all of you who took part. It was a wonderful day. See you next year xxx

SALVATION ARMY NEWS It seems as if there are many people celebrating 125 year anniversaries in 2011. As well as The Salvation Army being present in Minster since 1886 it seems that the Minster Show began then too. Also celebrating are Coca Cola, Anchor Butter, Tynecastle Stadium (the home of Hearts of Midlothian Football Club, Edinburgh) and the population of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Another Great British landmark, Tower Bridge, in London is also 125 years old this year. It’s not that long ago that some Americans thought they had bought the bridge only to find out later that is was a much less grand London Bridge they had purchased!! As we continue celebrating at the ‘Army’ we hope that some of you might join us at one of our events. We have our Harvest Festival Sunday on 2nd October, our Friendship Club Weekend on 15th / 16th October and our ‘Christmas Sale’ on Saturday 19th November. See our noticeboards for details. Christmas will soon be upon us and then another New Year to celebrate and add to the other 125!!

Thank you’s and messages.... QUILT EXHIBITION At the end of May 2011 Abbey Patchers held a quilt show in St Mary`s Church, Minster. Many beautiful quilts were hung and draped, the most popular quilt voted by visitors was “The blue basket “made by Diana Hockley. The raffle quilt was won by Betty Southgate and a cheque for £1070 was later presented to the Alzheimer’s Society. Thank you to all who visited the show and the next one will be in 2013. Tina Parker (Abbey Patchers) www.thanetquilters.org RIVERS COURT RESIDENTS DELIGHTFUL AFTERNOON AT THE ABBEY On the afternoon of 26th August at 2.45pm Residents from Rivers Court were invited to the Abbey for afternoon tea and a tour of the Abbey. Sadly it began to rain, but we were welcomed with such friendship and shown into a delightful room to view the video of the history of the Abbey. This was quite beautiful. After this we were given a most tasty tea of cucumber sandwiches, scones and chocolate cake with tea and coffee. Waited on by the Nuns with such obvious pleasure. I would like to thank the Nuns for their invitation from the members of Rivers Court who accepted the invitation. A wonderful treat, in a most pleasurable place. All the Nuns met us with a smile on their face. The Ambience that one feels was a pleasure to all, That surrounds you when once inside the Abbey Wall. St. Mildred lies below where the flowers grow, Our Patron Saint of Thanet, of course this we all know. (Yvonne)

COMMENDATIONS TO CHURCH CHOIR I have just returned from Church in the village, and I had to commend our choir for their professional and superb singing. As good as anywhere I have heard in Canterbury Cathedral where sometimes choirs come from across the Kingdom. I honestly feel they deserve a mention in M.M. Must not forget our organist also, he is unbelievable in his rendition of the hymns and anthems. (Yvonne)

Last months report praised the ladies for their success. This month the men have come up trumps. The Bernard Annand trophy for all Non County Badged Players was won by Minster. As six of the original team were not available for the final rounds due to the tour, the highest praise and congratulations goes to Brian Trinder, Alan Razzell, Jim Boyle, Peter Fairbrass, Len Cooper, Dave Martin, Mike Boston and Bill Hodgkinson, for beating Canterbury BC in the final. The same weekend saw Bill Hodgkinson, Dave Martin, Brian Trinder and Alan Razzell win the Jubilee Pairs Competition. Norman Wilson, Dave Martin and Len Cooper came back as losing Finalists of the Isle of Thanet Triples, very well done chaps. The tour to Bournemouth arranged last year by Maurice Bridges, now deceased, was a great success, 'thank you Maurice'. The weather cancelled one of the four days bowling but of the other three Minster won two. Our hosts were pleasantly surprised when immediately prior to each game, under the conductorship of Myrna Elson we sang the Club Song. The first part of the chorus is still heard coming from some of the male bowlers. So if you hear "LONG JACK, SHORT JACK" in passing, they were on the tour! Margaret Griffiths having taken over the reins, worked hard to make the trip successful. If you are reading this and wondering what to do through the Winter, need some activity, would like an indoor sport, why not try Short Mat Bowls? Come along for one or two taster sessions, they will be free, with equipment supplied. That's right, nothing to pay for the taster sessions! Late Late News….. Broadstairs Open Sylvia Pritchard Ladies Singles Winner. Maureen and Brian Hedges Plate Winners in the Mixed Pairs. Tilmanstone One Day Open Competition The Minster triples team of Miriam Smith, Jean Thorp and Sylvia Davis came away with the Winners Award, congratulations! Glynne Hibbert

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI Septembers meeting got off to a flying start with a hilarious talk 'Crossing America with a wheelchair' from Author and Professional speaker Ann Chance. This was a much anticipated talk as Ann is such popular a speaker that we had to book her 18 months in advance. Anns' antics with her disabled friend whose wish to see the Grand Canyon from the air prompted the trip were both funny and thought provoking. Members lost no time catching up with friends after the summer (?) break and have much to look forward to in the coming months. Dates for the diary: 29th September: Games Evening at Village Hall 8th October :Dabble Day Next Meeting 11th October at 7.30pm. Speaker- Dr Peter Giles. Members and visitors welcome. TRI FOR 3! KATIE SWIMS, CYCLES AND RUNS FOR 3 CAUSES My name is Katie Hogben and on 7th November 2011 I am flying to Cambodia for 2 weeks to teach English to underprivileged and orphaned children. I am a recent English and American Literature graduate from the University of Kent at Canterbury, and am currently working as a PA for a local businessman, but wanted to do something that really made a difference. This is how I came to plan my trip to Cambodia. I will be travelling to the city of Siem Reap in north-western Cambodia. The focus of the company I will be travelling with is on conservation, education and exploration. By teaching the children, both in the classroom and by doing out-of-school clubs with them, the hope is to equip them with the tools to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty, opening up opportunities that we in the Western world take for granted. Volunteering like this is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I hope to be part of a scheme that really makes a difference. Due to the costs of this trip, I am doing some fundraising. On 22nd October (date possibly subject to change) I shall be doing a novice triathlon – ‘Tri for 3’ – to raise money for three causes. 400m pool swim, 10km cycle, 2.5km run. Three disciplines for three causes! Along with raising sponsorship to help fund my trip to Cambodia, I wish to raise money for two other causes too: The St. Thomas Lupus Trust and CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). I have great affection for the St. Thomas Lupus Trust as I myself was diagnosed with Lupus early this year. Having suffered greatly for some months, but being lucky enough to be diagnosed and helped remarkably swiftly, I wish to help the Lupus unit at St. Thomas’ Hospital which is recognised throughout the world for its clinics, its teaching and its research. There are now 5,000 patients on the register at the unit, making it almost certainly one of the largest in the world. Lupus is an auto-immune disease and can 1P/9 affect any organ of the body, being often referred to as the ‘great mimic,’ so having this unit where experts can deal with the many different features of this distressing disease is indispensible. The second cause I wish to raise money for is CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), a charity that means a lot to a friend of mine who suffered from heart problems in her late teens and early twenties, and thus a charity close to my heart. Donations to this charity help to fund their ECG screenings that hope to Dog Grooming Service prevent Sudden Death Syndrome, and recognise and deal with cardiac abnormalities. All Breeds Welcome Any money I raise from ‘Tri for 3’ will be split equally between the three causes. Kind Professional Service I have a Facebook page for the triathlon – ‘Tri for 3! Katie swims, cycles and runs for 3 causes’ Fully Insured with further links and details, and have set up a special bank account for this event, details below. All donations, whether cash, cheque or wire transfer, will be split three-ways equally between the three causes. Professionally Trained Account number: 9 0 9 1 2 7 4 8 Sort code: 6 0 - 0 4 - 2 7 Gemma & Sandie Any support you could give or exposure regarding my cause would be gratefully received. I wish to raise as much money as possible for these causes, so your input would be indispensible! 69 High Street, Minster, My contact details are: 07969 855 046 or email me at katiejanehogben@hotmail.co.uk CT12 4AB Many thanks for taking the time to read this letter! (Co-Editors note: A new member to the team, Minster Matters would like to wish Katie every success 01843 825 841 in her ‘Tri for 3’ and trip to Cambodia and look forward to hearing all about it when Katie returns.) 1P/1

The classic story of Beauty and the Beast is retold on the Minster Playhouse stage, but as an hilarious pantomime version. The classic characters from the story are there – Beauty plus her Beast and a whole host of others, such as Belle’s ugly sister, Smelle, and their long suffering father, Claude, to name just a couple. Vampire Pigs School Page Editors Vampire pigs are really cool. They start off as this month baby piggies with tiny fangs. Then they grow up were and turn into vampires. Beatrice Cocks By Livvy and Jessica Fright Harvest Festival On the September we had to do a harvest My holiday to Greece festival in Saint Marys Church. A few weeks ago, on a Thursday I went to Greece. We At the harvest festival we sang a lot of songs about went to a little village called Kontarena near Vassiliki! thanking God for all of the crops and food we have. We stayed at my granddads house. He has a lot of By Livvy and Jade Friends. He also has a huge boat called Galatea Savage 42. In the Vassiliki harbour. I enjoyed it in Greece very much By Jodie Ellis 16th

Autumn Leaves Autumn leaves blow about In the wind children shout Up there in the trees Leaves fall over you and me The people are snug in their blankets watching TV Whilst they watch they drink their lovely cup of tea Underneath the crispy leaves creatures crawl about They make themselves very warm to sleep the winter out My friends and I kick the leaves They go everywhere we kick and kick and kick And we are nearly on our knees Not a sound at night when people are in bed They lay down their sleepy heads whilst the wind blows about. by Annabelle

Hornby Hornby are a company that make electric trains. You can get all different trains, carriages and accessories for your track. You have a choice of trains, some you can make puff out smoke. There are also some really old ones, some go fast, some a bit slow, there are steam trains and modern trains. By Richard Hulks I am going to France I am going to France for my Dad’s birthday and he will be 40. We are going to go in the pool and we will go in the sea to have a swim. My dad will surf and I might have a go if it is not too cold. My sister might have a go too. We are sleeping in a hut and we are going for two weeks. My Mum, Dad, Sister and I are going. We are all going to have lots of fun! By Beatrice Cocks

Miss Wood Miss Wood is the best teacher I have had in school, but the only problem is that she absolutely loves chocolate and so do I. She is really really fun!!!! She makes lessons really exciting. By Jessica Fright Nature is a beautiful thing. Nature is something that lives on the planet. For example, Insects - Animals - Plants - Trees We have to look after our nature otherwise we would not be alive because trees give oxygen and animals give us things we need to help us survive for example, worms make compost and give us the compost. By Annabelle Fleming and Grace McDonald. Buckingham Palace During the summer holidays I went up to London. On the first day in London I went to Hamleys the biggest toy shop in the world and the M and M shop which we think is the biggest in the world. On the second day I went to Buckingham Palace. In the Palace I saw lots and lots of rooms. My favourite 2 rooms were the room with the wedding cake in and the room with the wedding dress, earings, shoes and bouquet. In that room they had a 10 to 20 minute video to show how the lace was chosen and sewn on. The wedding cake in the cabinet was the real cake. It was amazing! By Alice Cox
