MINSTER SHOW Next Committee Meeting: Fri 14 Nov 7.30pm @ The Bell Inn (New members welcome) The Committee are actively looking for volunteer photographers for the 2015 Show - Good with a camera? Let us know. EDITORIAL Not much space for me to fill this month, well, now that I’ve got nearly everything in Diane that we were sent. Could have done with 2 more pages but hey-ho better to have too much than not enough. I never cease to be amazed just how well everyone supports us for which I thank you all as without you there wouldn’t be a magazine. Disappointed however with the amount of advertisers who ignore our regular invoices and fail to pay Diana their bills. We’ve removed 4 adverts this month through non-payment, the most we’ve ever done at one time. So if your advert isn’t in this issue then it probably means you haven’t paid!! Haven’t had a ‘poor parking’ picture just recently but we couldn’t resist the one above that’s parked right across the bottom of Domneva Road opposite the school, how Kevin selfish and lazy can you get? We’ve heard on the grapevine that our resident poet, Yvonne, has a serious brain tumour. From all of us here at MM we send her our best wishes and hope that she keeps fighting (and writing!). Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

THANK YOU On behalf of my mother, Pam, sister, Sandra, and brother, Robert, I wish to thank the many people who expressed such kindness and support following Dad’s death on the 5th September. The messages and cards were greatly appreciated. I thank, too, the villagers who came to the funeral on the 15th September, and particularly Paul Willins, an old friend of Dad’s, for arranging and leading the service. Fruit&Veg ~ Flowers&Plants ~ Sweets&Gifts We are very grateful for the generous donations to the Pilgrims Hospice, where Dad spent the last two days of his life. As a result, we were able to send a cheque for £1,000.00. Order a weekly fruit and veg box from us We look back with great pride upon a life lived in the service of the community today. of Minster. Dear Editor, I write with regard to your editorial and the PCSO’s report in your excellent magazine. Whilst I cannot condone “law breaking” the term ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR is surely a matter of opinion. The persecution of motor cyclists is nothing new. I have been one for 55 years. The accusation of racing on the public highway is probably a little strong, as is a dispersal order put in place by what we are given to believe is an over stretched police force. Maybe their time could be better used to detect burglary, theft, property damage and assault on the streets of Thanet. My point is that in the last few months I have heard complaints of :- church bells, children playing, dogs barking, lawn mowers, loud music etc., when all you have to do is to be able to tolerate other people wanting something different and just maybe Minster and the world would be a happier place. John Quittenden May I stress these are my personal views. “RELAX ERIC!” Each year outside the Village Hall is a wonderful display of hanging baskets. The containers arrive around the month of May. Eric has one ambition - The baskets MUST be on display for the Art Show in October. Eric sets to work, throughout the year, he waters, feeds, de-heads and snips. The hard work paid off and for the first weekend in October the baskets were fantastic. You can relax now Eric, your ambition has been achieved, that is until next year!!. The Art Show was very good as well. (name withheld on request) (Editor’s note: We see they are now adorning the Bell Inn)

Pub Quiz Once again the bell ringers of St. Mary’s have to thank Ken and Fiona of the Bell Inn for running a pub quiz for the benefit of the bell restoration fund and raising £418, bringing the total raised for that cause overall to £5,300. Thanks to Ken and Fiona for hosting the quizzes, Chris Sings for his Question-mastery, all the people who come along to make the evenings such fun, and to others who contribute so generously. Handbells The Band of Handbell Ringers are still on the lookout for new ringers to join the band. Handbell ringing is an unusual way of making music, as each member contributes to part of the melody and the overall sound, rather like an Indonesian Gamelan orchestra. Of course knowledge of music is a great help, but a feel for the tunes and learning the technique is a good start too. Currently the band is working on Christmas Carols. Why not come along on a Saturday morning to the Church, and join in? Tower Bells The Band of Ringers in the Tower has had a struggle to get to where they are today. It would have been so much easier to start one or two new ringers in an established and skilled band, rather than, as we have had to do, starting all beginners together. Despite this, progress has been made. The band is now reasonably competent in change ringing, changing places with other bells to vary the sound of the round. Recently we have started to learn to “hunt” which is initially more difficult as the changes have to happen on each pull of the rope, speeding up to move in one direction in the round, and slowing down to move your bell in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, starting to learn a new skill results initially in some awful noises from the tower (some of them from the bells). We apologise, but we have to learn, and the final result should be the typical sound of the English bell tower in full song. Strange fact about bell ringing: most people love the sound of church bells; those who don’t, seem to buy a home next to a church. There’s nowt so strange…

Minster School Councillors Visit to Margate Council Chambers The KM Charity Team invited our year 5 and 6 School Councillors to Margate Council Chambers to discuss green travel and pollution issues around Thanet. We joined other schools from Thanet in the Council Chambers and had the opportunity to speak through the microphones when we had a question or something to contribute to the discussion. The children were all very interested in hearing Amanda Berry from the Environmental Health Team explain that Thanet’s main pollution hot spots are Birchington Square, St Lawrence High Street and Boundary Road. The council measures the pollution levels constantly and have found the levels peak at rush hour, when children are going to school, and in the afternoon, when children are coming home from school. Simon Dolby, from KM Charity explained that with the green travel initiative, of which Minster School is part, we can reduce the levels of pollution us and our children breath in every day. Ben said “It was so much fun being there. It made me feel so important to be sitting in the seats that the councillors use! The best part was using the microphones; I asked the question: How much will pollution increase in the future? Amanda answered: That depends on how many cars are on the road.” At Minster School, we are promoting green travel through our two walking buses. The one from Tothill Street has been running for over 10 years now, thanks to dedicated volunteers. We also encourage children to walk to school, by joining in with our Minster Mountain Challenge and WOW (where we collect data to see which class has the most children walking or scootering to school on a Friday). We are always looking for ways to reduce the congestion around the school, for the safety of our pupils. Ali Gillatt FLO

MISSING !!!!!!! BLUE from Cheney Road Blue has been missing since 22nd September and really needs to go home. Please check your sheds, garages etc. When last seen he was wearing a collar and tag and he is chipped. He is a neutered British Blue Shorthair and his very young owner Frankie is truly missing him. To report a sighting or to return him to his owner please ring Amanda on 07976 834 250. Thank you.

Zac’s Musings Well I’m not a lover of cats but I feel for the owners of Blue above who is missing from home. I know I’d hate to be lost so please keep an eye out for him. I have to tell you that I think I’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country since I was last here, well it seemed like it to me anyway. No I didn’t go with Jon and Chris on their round Britain trip, I’m definitely not into 50 hours of non stop driving. No, we only went to Wales - first to the far North and then right down to the far South. Travelling up and back in torrential rain, it was horrendous. Spent the first 4 days in a tin box, well ok it was a caravan, but the rain beating on it made it sound like a tin box. Then we had a couple of days with some of the grandchildren which was pretty good, but it’s so much better being back at home in my own bed, that was definitely far enough for me. Apart from rain and thunder we also had fireworks whilst we were away and they terrified me. Remember it is Guy Fawkes very soon so if you’re like me and don’t enjoy fireworks then let’s hope we don’t have them going on until very late in the evenings, which often happens, I really don’t believe some people even consider how it affects some of us - PLEASE consider those of us who don’t understand, thank you.

Wasted Space Time comes, time goes, tide’s ebb, tide’s flow. Spring returns, and in life lessons are learned. One strives to achieve, all in life, we think we need, when in reality, it seems to me, this is not always a necessity. As long as one has a happy home, where love and security, both are known, all the rest is “wasted space”, as long as you can look the world in the face. Can say, in truth, you have done all you can, to help wherever possible, your fellow man, no hopes or dreams need to be shattered, for you have achieved in life, all that really matters. Yvonne

Dear Editor, I note that Kent Police have had the brilliant idea of starting a kick boxing club in the village. Why stop there? Perhaps the idea might be expanded to include a G.B.H. club or some other offensive, anti-social activity. Better still we could have a practice area outside Ben’s every evening with a policeman to control it. (name withheld on request)

MINSTER WI October’s monthly meeting on Tuesday 14 began with the President welcoming the many visitors to Minster’s “hands on” craft evening in the Village Hall. Sarah then described the recent Bruges trip as a great day out, thanking Liz and Cathy for organising everything so well. More thanks went to Glenda and her helpers who did the cream teas at Saturday’s Minster Playhouse production. Secretary, Liz, then distributed packs of felt etc and members enjoyed a really sociable, creative time making their own Christmas decoration. Following a photo call and then refreshments, Sarah outlined the procedure for the AGM on 11 November when officers and committee members are appointed. After the business part, there will be a guest speaker talking about her baking experience. The President then set members a challenge – which will be judged by the guest speaker and sampled by all! Before the raffle Sarah gave out details of the Christmas Party and hamper contributions, as well as the Centenary Baton route on the 11 December and the Civic Carol Service at the Lych Gate on the 16th. At 9.35 she then closed what had been a particularly relaxed and enjoyable meeting. Forthcoming events: Games Evening – Wednesday 26 November @ 7.30pm to 10.00pm Village Hall Committee Room

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION A big thank you to the Royal British Legion, the organisers, caterers, helpers and supporters of the quiz on 11 October. The winning team were 7 UP, but it was a very close contest. We need support from the same teams and more to try and knock 7 UP from their position! - and 7 UP to return to retain their title. (Hopefully we will plan another quiz in the Spring, but you will be kept informed. ) The American style raffle was again very successful, with about 15 prizes being well accepted. Thank you to everyone who donated the gifts. Would all the teams who joined in the quiz and enjoyed the evening, please ‘like’ us on our facebook page, facebook.com/minstertwinning. Thank you. The AGM is to be held on 14 November in the Neighbourhood Centre, commencing at 7.30 pm when there will be an election of officers. The secretary has informed us that she will be standing down. We hope to have a good attendance from the village as we are keen to hear your thoughts about the Association and how we can support the village in the future. We are also looking for volunteers for helping with our events. On Saturday 29 November we have a table at the Christmas Bazaar in the Village Hall, so we hope to see as many of you as possible there to support it. Shortly, we will be having a meeting to discuss our plans for next year, with some exciting events proposed. We hope to have a list of dates in the New Year with these planned events, so please keep a check on the website www.minsterarmboutstwinning.org.uk and of course Minster Matters. It was mentioned in last month’s MM that we are looking for anyone who would like to join us on a coach going to Armbouts Cappel for the Anniversary Day that the French will be hosting on 24 May 2015. Please let Carol know if you’d like to come: 07745 683 466. In the meantime, we hope to see you on 14 November.

Minster Show AGM The AGM was held on Friday 3 October in the Neighbourhood Centre. The Treasurer was pleased to announce that there was a profit of £880 made, taking into account all the expenses and income generated this year. This profit is banked in order to ensure that should the Show be rained off in 2015, there would still be a Show in 2016. Therefore, it is important that everyone pays and plays their part in helping us to maintain this Show as part of the annual cycle of the village. I am very aware that a large number of people really stepped up and spent much of their day supporting us selling raffle tickets / manning stalls / helping with parking and litter - and Thank You; because without you it would not be the success that it is. However, I am also aware that some people begrudged paying the £3 entry. The Show cost in the order of £7,500 and our only sources of income are stall fees and gate entry. I am proud to be Chair of the Committee. I know how hard we try to ensure that the Show is worth your money and maintains Minster's heritage. If you have any ideas or wish to support / help on the day in any way please chat to Karen in Attwells or phone myself on 07815 083 163 (you may need to leave a message) and we will listen. Dominique

Round Britain Reliability Run… Every other year CLUB TRIUMPH organise the 'Round Britain Reliability Run', a 2000 mile test of car and driving teams. We were team 105 of 108 leaving from Enfield in North London at 6pm on Friday 3rd October. Our aim and purpose was to travel around Britain non-stop. We had 19 checkpoints at which a Club Triumph official signed our road book. We had 1 hour windows to arrive at the allotted checkpoints. After travelling through the night via Edinburgh Airport and Inverness we arrived at 7.50am at the Seaview Hotel in John O'Groats for a well-earned breakfast and a 1 hour stop. We then began to head South and travel through some spectacular scenery on route back to Stirling, then via Loch Ness, around Glasgow and eventually back across the border at Gretna and down towards Carlisle, sometimes all alone, other times in a Triumph convoy. 9 checkpoints had been signed off by the time we entered Wales, a big test for both man and machine through the night then back to England over the Severn Bridge. We then headed West to Cornwall and at day break on Sunday morning we arrive at Lands End for another 1 hour stop and some well earned breakfast. On leaving here we headed back to Bude along the coast then South over Bodmin Moor and eventually to Dartmoor, another challenge for both car and occupants. We had been on the road for 40 hours by now but we were rewarded with more beautiful scenery. Wimborne was our penultimate stop on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset where we enjoyed a vast array of homemade cakes by Club Triumph wives, they were very welcoming to us all. After our last stop at the TR register in Didcot it was back to London and the finish. On approaching London the traffic was horrendous as usual and we finally arrived at our destination at 8.45pm on Sunday night after 2250 miles and 75 gallons of fuel in just over 49 hours. WHY do we did it..........., this was the 24th running of the RBRR and it has so far raised in excess of £350,000 for various charities over the years, this year's charity is Macmillan Care and by the time all sponsorship is collected between £50,000£60,000 will have been raised, this year. Our car, a 1970 Triumph 2.5 PI (44 years old), averaged a respectable 29.9mpg. Martin and his crew at Minster Garage spent a month checking and double checking the car for its journey so a big thanks goes to them because it never missed a beat, although we will need some new brakes and a couple of wheel bearings before we set off on another journey. In the alternate years the 'RBRR' Club Triumph run another event called the 'Ten Countries Run'. This is another long weekend drive going through France, Monte Carlo, Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium then home to England. WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S We need to have all willing donations collected and sent to Club Triumph by the end of November. Many thanks, Jonathan, Chris and Peter TEAM 105

IN REMEMBRANCE 1914-18 (Some 750,000 British and Commonwealth Servicemen were killed in The Great War)

From factory, farm and workhouse We answered Kitchener’s call To fight for King and Country In the war to end them all It will be all over by Christmas That’s what our Generals said But Christmas came, the war went on And many of us were dead At Mons we fought, at Ypres, the Somme Messines and Passchendaele For honour and for glory Determined not to fail Just one more push is all we need That’s what our Generals cried But the Generals did no pushing It was us who fought and died For four long years the sacrifice Was ours and ours alone And all we have to show for it Are names carved into stone So was our sacrifice worthwhile Or was it all in vain And will our sons be called upon To fight this war again.

HALCYON DAYS Halcyon days, those halcyon days When kippers were fourpence a pair When the pub had an outing to Ramsgate And we spent two and six at the fair When mum had a port and lemon And dad won a watch on a chain But those days are now gone forever Never to come back again. Vic.

Harvest Festival

Roald Dahl Week This term we had a Roald Dahl week. Each year group read a Roald Dahl book and based their English lessons around that book. Here are the books we enjoyed. Yr R - The Enormous Crocodile Yr 1 - Fantastic Mr. Fox

On Thursday all the students went to the church for our Harvest Festival. In KS1, the children created a rainbow to show how God provides such a wide variety of food. In KS2, each year group performed their own piece to the parents. Our chosen charity this year was Farm Africa and the school had its very own “Wear your wellies for Farm Africa” day. We would like to thank everyone for their contributions. The school managed to raise a staggering £205.00.

Yr 2 - James and the Giant Peach Yr 3 - The BFG

Year 4 Church Visit

Yr 4 - George's Marvellous Medicine

To support their class learning, Year 4 paid a visit to St. Mary’s Church last week to find out more about the Christian Church Calendar. The Reverend Braddy explained how certain festivals and fasts are marked by the different colour robes he wears and that the church also displays a particular colour for each time on the calendar. The children had a great time and Reverend Braddy kindly chose some children to try on his robes. The children had lots of questions and found out how old the church is and how different parts of the church were built by three of our house namesakes; the Romans, Saxons and Normans.

Yr 5 - The Twits Yr 6 – Matilda On Friday we had a Dahlicious Dressing Up Day!! Thank you for making such an amazing effort with your costumes and raising over £250 for the Roald Dahl charity.

You were all gloriumptious!

Dance Off House Competition The first of our mini house competitions took place at the end of last week, a house dance-off. Children from Years 1-6 danced their socks off on Thursday lunchtime and our judges had a tough time deciding on five children from each house to dance in Friday lunchtimes final. Our very own dance teacher, Miss Harwood, had an even bigger task choosing the winners, but finally made a decision that Harry and Rhianna had impressed her most with their “moves”. Congratulations to the winners who have earned an extra 25 house points for both Viking House and Norman House. Well done and thank you to all the children who came along to dance and support their house.

“Frozen” Lunch Last Thursday, we held a Frozen themed lunch. For the price of £2.50 the children received their “Frozen” meal and were instantly entered into a raffle. The main prize was an Olaf Teddy and the runners up received a Frozen sticker book and colouring set. Even the packed lunches had fun whilst listening to Frozen songs in the lunch hall.
