BT - RACE TO INFINITY (as advertised on TV) Minster needs your support whether or not you use BT as your phone or broadband provider. BT tell us there are 2,288 telephone subscribers in this village, residential and business and it is in everybody’s interest to get the best service we can through our local telephone exchange. (2,280 votes would be great !!) Sadly you need access to a broadband connection to be able to vote, but once you’ve overcome that hurdle you can cast a vote for yourself, then maybe Grannie or Great Aunt Matilda, (you must log out before you can cast another vote) the only problem being you need their telephone number and postcode plus an email address to vote on their behalf (it doesn’t have to be their email address). You are only allowed one vote per household or business line, and voting closes at the end of December. So please “GET YOUR Recycle your empty Cartridges at the library, all money SKATES ON” and get voting. We could even be in with a raised will help us, here at MM Towers, to keep improving chance of winning £5k’s worth of computing equipment !! our services both for you and the community Vote at: www.racetoinfinity.bt.com

Minster Matters 3 November 2010 The ‘E’ Team EDITORIAL Christmas creeps ever closer and another year has nearly finished, I’m a year older and feeling it most days ! I must make mention here of the fact that Major Denise Ray Cooper of the Salvation Army is to leave us before the New Year begins, in fact I believe her last official day, here in the (Minster Window Company) village, is Boxing Day. I am sure you will all join with me in Property Maintenance wishing her all the very best in her new role what-ever and Building Work where-ever that may be. I am sure she will be truly missed Plastering * Rendering Amy within this community, as although she hasn’t been here very uPVC Windows & Doors long she has been accepted as a true friend by many and will be uPVC Fascia, Soffits & Guttering greatly missed when she has gone. Let us hope that is not too Repairs to existing double glazing long before we greet her replacement and that they too are Misted up sealed units replaced welcomed into our community as Denise was. Brenda Garage Doors * Decking As you will have already read on the front page we are starting a new recycling initiative here in the village, which will hopefully give another small income into our much needed Call on funds here at MM. We are able to recycle Ink Jet Cartridges Eve (NOT Epson or Brother) Toner Cartridges, Mobile Phones and PDA’s all of which will help to fund the magazine and our other enterprises such as Audio CD, Large Print issues and Braille copies. You can drop any of these into the library for us, A.J.Cliffe & Sons remember however any Toner Cartridges must be in their (Butchers) Ltd Diane original packaging we cannot accept them otherwise. Still Taking Our other BIG push this month is to get as many residents/businesses to vote in the BT Race to Infinity as noted Christmas Orders on the front page. Please take the time to vote as this will benefit Nora all telephone users in the village not just those who pay their Don’t Forget Our bills to BT, and it would also greatly improve the broadband World Famous access speeds. Further to that if we manage to get into the top 5 we will also be eligible to enter for a prize of £5,00 worth of Xmas Raffle computer equipment for the community. Scoring for the Sue improved telephone lines is done on the percentage of voters to Canterbury House, the number of subscribers on the exchange, so we are listed as having Monkton Road, Minster 2,288 subscribers on Minster exchange so to reach a score of 99% we Tel: 01843 821288 need 2,265 votes to be cast, where as somewhere like Ramsgate who have 19,975 would require 19,775 to reach the same target, so we are realistically in with a good chance if we can convince everyone possible to vote. Voting closes at the end of December so don’t delay in registering yours. Likely you will see me out on Late Night Shopping evening 23rd November promoting this, along with our cartridge recycling. Watch out for me by Attwells. We are still looking for a new Co-Editor, more so now, as the December issue may be Amy’s last. So if you’ve considered offering your services but still haven’t done so then now is the time by to let us know, especially if you’d like to take advantage of www.minstersalon.com some initial training 61, High St off your first from Amy before she Minster 73 High Street, leaves us. Well space visit to The Salon Tel: has beaten me again, so Minster, Ramsgate until next month take 824000 with this voucher 01843 821216 care. Where’s Zac ?

MARY PULLINGER Minster Matters were sad to hear of the passing of Mary who was well liked in the village and where she lived at Rivers Court. She was especially kind to us, always pressing us with a small donation every time we met her in the street. We are humbled at knowing such a wonderful person, may she now rest in peace. Editor

There was a riot of colour at October's meeting, when Helen Kendal-Tobias demonstrated a variety of attractive ways to tie scarves of different shapes and sizes. As well as Helen's many lovely scarves, members had brought some of their own to the meeting, and we were soon busy tying ourselves in knots! We were reminded of the plans for Dabble Day later in the month, and also reminded that it was not too late for nominations to stand for next year's Committee. Plans for entertainment at the Christmas Party are well in hand, and members were asked for suitable contributions to the Christmas Hamper, which will be raffled at the Party. Items were also requested for our home cooking themed stall at the village Christmas Fair. Although new members and guests are welcome to attend our next meeting on Tuesday, 9th November at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, it should be noted that it will be our Annual General Meeting, and there is no speaker.

November 2010 PFIZER PLC COMMUNITY AWARD SCHEME Thanks to the above program, the Patient Liaison Group working with Minster Surgery, have been able to donate equipment worth nearly £500 to the Practice. This equipment will provide additional benefits and facilities to Patients which are not currently available, and consists of : 1. OXIOMETER - To enable a more accurate diagnosis for patients who are suffering from breathing difficulties. 2. BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORS x 8 - For patients personal use at home under the guidance of their GP. The presentation took place at 11.00am on Saturday 16th October at the surgery, where Dr C. Crosfield gratefully accepted the equipment on behalf of the surgery. Ken Self (Group Treasurer) explained the group submitted an application to Pfizer PLC a few months ago after identifying the need for such equipment, and was extremely pleased when advised of the success of the application. Originally, the application was for only 6 "Blood Pressure Monitors" but, on finding out about the scheme, "Field Pharmacy (Minster)" kindly donated an additional 2 Monitors, as well as supplying the equipment at an extremely competitive price! The equipment has been brought into service very quickly with Dr Crosfield already identifying patients who could benefit from their use.

Thank You ...... A “Big Thank You” to Steve Taylor, the Community Warden, who ‘saved the day’ for Dawn and Nick’s wedding by using his contacts at Highways to have the road resurfacing vehicles moved from being parked outside the Church Lychgate that day! Bob Coles The Salvation Army, Annual Appeal: “We believe in people” Many thanks to everyone in Minster and the surrounding areas, who gave generously towards our Annual Appeal once again this year. We are pleased to let you know that your generosity enabled us to collect around £5000 this year – an improvement once again on our previous years total. This money goes towards the social work of The Salvation Army in the UK, enabling us to care and provide for many people in various situations who are unable to help themselves. Next to the government, The Salvation Army is the biggest provider of social services in the UK, so your donation is much need and used wisely by The Salvation Army. THANK YOU!!! Thank you to all of you in Minster..... who helped us raise money for Charity at our Psychic Fayre in June. We had a good day and although less people attended than we had hoped we still managed to send a substantial amount to three non-government funded Charities, including Foals & Horses in Oswaldtwistle whom we have been helping for some 10 years or more now. Many thanks to all of you who took posters for us and for Eric at the Hall who helped us with all the setting up of the stalls. See our advert for another Fayre in November in Minster, we look forward to meeting some of you again then, and we thank you in advance for taking our posters! One last thing. Some of you may have been aware that my colleague Malcolm no longer attends my events. This is because he has decided to set up on his own now, and we at Northdown Centre wish him all the best with his venture, and hope he finds what he is looking for. Once again, thank you Minster! November 2010 MINSTER SHOW A.G.M. Report On behalf of the Show Committee, Minster Matters can report that the recent A.G.M. saw much more support than normal, in fact there were more apologies for absences this year than there were attendees last year. A group of about 30 villagers came along to hear what the committee had to say about the events and happenings of this year’s show, and after hearing a number of residents views it was unanimously agreed that the show should go on, but with the proviso that the village being responsible for the security of the site whilst the marquee is there. This may be just one night or it could be two, if the committee are unable to get the marquee company to come back and disassemble it on the Sunday. Committee member Danny Day stated that he has been assured there will be a police presence there next year, as both of our rural policemen have promised they will be on duty to cover both night and day for the whole weekend. However they obviously can’t give us a 24hr presence onsite so to that end it has been proposed to announce that the committee are looking for volunteers to assist in keeping the area secure especially overnight. There will soon be various points in the village where you can add you name to a list of possible volunteers for this job, and it is hoped that enough of the right sort of people come along to allow a shift system to be implemented, thus reducing the time each will need to commit. Please watch local notice-boards, Minster Matters and the show website for further details. It is hoped we may even be able to offer the facility to sign up via the web, but this is to be looked at before we commit to saying it is definitely so. The committee reported that overall it had been a very good show and although the financial gain was lower this year the funds are still healthy enough to see them through at least another 2 years. The Chair, Dominique, thanked all in sundry for their work prior to, on the day, and afterwards, her list being too long to reproduce here, but we don’t think she left anyone out. A committee has been formed for 2011 and it was good to see at least one totally new member come onboard to support the 2010 committee, who all re-stood for their current positions, and what was especially nice to see was that it was a village teenager who was showing a real interest in becoming involved. Well done Louise ! The first committee meeting, for the 125th show, will be on 19th November so if you have anything you would like them to discuss then please let Karen know in Attwells or contact another member of the committee.

Marooned at Minster, Shunt, Shunt, Shunt. Whilst in the silence we “wait and see” and I would that my tongue might utter The thoughts that rise in me. Oh well for the signal mans boy, that he smiles at our weary delay. Oh well for the stoker too, that he sings while we freeze on our way. And the empty train goes on, whilst our twentieth pipe we fill. But Oh for a sight of the train we want, and the sound of the engine that’s still. Shunt, Shunt, Shunt. Till a train rushing at us we see, but the brakeman’s van, as I mutter “Oh” Will never come back to me. “With humble and profound apologies our cartoonist is bitterly sarcastic in reference to the Minster Junction Scandal. The studied system of the railway company is to make all passengers detrain at Minster and wait on a cold, dreary and exposed platform”.

I am assuming that there was a report of complaints in a previous edition of the newspaper and will attempt to find it. It is probable that at this time the South Eastern Railway Company, who built and operated the line, did not have a “run round” facility, to enable the steam engine to change ends of the train. This would have required a “shunt manoeuvre”, and would possibly (for health and safety reasons!) have been considered “unsafe” for passengers to remain in their carriages whilst this manoeuvre was carried out. My thanks to Barrie Wooton for the finding of this article. Danny Day (Minster Local History Archive)

1. Rubbish bags (ALL) are to be collected on sight by street cleansing vehicles. Waste freighter crews will do this on, and between, collection rounds when it is safe for them to do so. Street cleansing vehicle drivers must pick up rubbish from spilled bags before moving off. Waste freighter crews must collect spilled rubbish from split bags wherever possible according to the circumstances, but the expectation is that this will be done. Evening collections by street cleansing teams are arranged for known problem areas and hot spots. Teams assigned to this role must collect black bags wherever seen, especially from regular abuse locations. 2. Refuse freighter crews must use discretion regarding bags of “side” waste, and must pick up litter seen on pavements and gutters on their round. 3. Wheelie bins must be placed in a safe position after tipping. Take account of wind, access etc. 4. Litter must be collected on sight by street cleansing and ground maintenance team members on roads, verges and roundabouts on high traffic volume roads. A daily litter pick must occur for “Gold Routes”. This includes plastic bags, etc. Hanging from trees and bushes. Initial “Gold Routes” are Birchington to Margate Station Green; and Eaton Road to Westwood Cross, then through the Haine Road and New Haine Road to the Lord of the Manor roundabout. 5. Members of the street cleaning teams must pay close attention to detail on their rounds. Cigarette butts and accumulated dirt must be swept, and weeds removed wherever seen. Look out also for rubbish bags dumped in out of the way locations. 6. Rubbish bin doors must be closed and locked EVERY time. A temporary securing arrangement must be sourced if the bin cannot be replaced immediately. 7. Grit sweeping and gutter clearing is a priority on high traffic volume routes. “Gutter clearing” means the removal of accumulated dirt and grass growing between pavement and road. 8. Litter must be collected on sight in parks and play areas. Cleanliness is hugely important when residents and visitors use our parks and amenities for leisure and recreation. 9. No grass should be cut until any strewn litter is collected. Shredded paper and plastic remaining after the grass is cut is unsightly and shows a lack of commitment and pride. 10. Redundant notices and signs must be removed immediately, including attachment string, etc. In date posters advertising events can be left - use discretion. Martin Wise, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services. July 2010.

Dorothy Joan Sandwell (nee CHAPMAN) 1932 - 2010 Known to her family and friends as Joan, she went to Minster Primary School and then to Ellington, Ramsgate and was a member of the St Mary’s Church Choir with her friend Eileen Baynton. Joan worked at Sandringham Cafe, Advance Laundry, Astra Fireworks and Hill Joan 2005 Joan and House Hospital. Eileen Joan did her courting in Minster and her sister, Sylvia, remembers “Being dragged around with her and her boyfriend, Norman, who was a miner at Chislet Colliery, on the orders of their mother, so they didn’t get up to anything naughty!” Joan and Norman married in 1953 and remained in Minster with their 2 children, Susan and Raymond, until the early 1960’s. They frequently came back to Minster to see both their family and friends. A TREASURED FRIEND

Mary Pullinger A light has gone out in our lives, at the Passing of Mary Pullinger, here at Rivers Court. MARY I feel certain, that. What I am to say is, fact. We are never alone, when we die. An angel will be standing by our side. To welcome us with open arms. To think like this, will certainly not harm. So, when one of us has to say goodbye. Although I know we need to cry. I realise sad partings make us - sigh. The angel’s face we will recognise. I know this to be true, and I am not that wise. When we close our eyes for the final time. There is no need to ever worry, for everything will be fine. Yvonne Mary loved my poetry and little books, and wanted a copy of everything I wrote. She was my champion of champions.

They sing follow the yellow brick road. They like Dorothy Obviously there are more, but if I did them all it would take for because she squashed the witch with her house. Alice in Wonderland Today I am writing about Alice in wonderland because it is a really good film featuring Johnny Dep. lots of interesting things happen and it is a very exciting film. Alice in wonderland is a epic 3d film adventure made by Tim burton.19 year old Alice returns to the wired but wonderful world of which she adventured when she was much younger meeting the white rabbit, the mystical cat, the dormouse, the caterpillar and of course the strange mad hatter. Thank you for reading, this was made by Kathryn FGoldfinch.

We hope we have a great time with her at Hindleap and the rest of the school year. By Olivia and Emily
