November 2009 EDITORIAL

The ‘E’ Team

Autumn’s definitely here, I know ‘cos I’ve had to put my coat on in the morning to walk the dog, but there again what a beautiful time of the year this is, with all the different colours in the foliage, and a myriad of birds about to migrate for the Winter. It’s one of Ray my favourite seasons, but I also look forward to the Spring when everything starts to come back to life and the birds make a welcomed return. Nights are drawing in and we turn the clocks back on Sunday 25th October so then it will be dark really early, meaning the festive Amy season will soon be upon us. Now’s the time to get your parties or your Christmas dinner organised. All the local traders who offer dining facilities, over this period, tell me they are getting lots of bookings, so if you’re thinking about letting someone else do the washing up then best you get out Brenda and get your table booked at the eatery of your choice. This month sees us welcoming new tenants in the village at The Saddler, also a new Italian Restaurant, Gozzi’s, at No77 High St, as well as new tenants at the Sportsman in Cliffsend so plenty of opportunities for us all to get out and sample their wares. Eve For those who wish to have a quiet Halloween evening in front of the telly we’ve reproduced the usual “No Trick or Treat” poster on our front cover that you can prop in your window to warn revelers that you wish to be left alone. Let’s just hope they heed the warning !! Diane The whole of the MM team send their congratulations to Nora (our audio editor) and her husband Barry who have just told us they are expecting their first child in March, so our recording studio will shortly become a nursery. I did say, if we could continue to use it after the little one was born, that we would quite willingly Nora learn a few lullaby’s in case we disturb the young one’s sleep, but Nora didn’t seem too keen on that idea (maybe she’s heard me trying to sing before !!!). We’ve heard on the grapevine that the footpath, we fought to keep, which runs along one edge of the new development, has now Sue been officially recognised as a public right of way, and has even been given an official footpath number, although we don’t know what that is. However the developers are appealing the order as it requires them demolishing one of the properties they’ve already built ‘and sold’. The possibility of a diversion is at present being looked at. We’ll keep you informed when we know any more. It just goes to show that sometimes it pays to stand up and be counted. We thank all those residents who have recently send us letters praising the magazine and saying just how much they like it’s new look cover. We like to believe it looks more professional and is a publication worthy of such a great community. With effect from this issue you will now be able to download it in a variety of ‘e-book’ formats for use in the majority of electronic book readers. That’s it, all my space filled for another month. Where’s Zac today?

Swine Flu Pandemic As everyone returns to school and work this is just a reminder to ensure you keep on your guard to help prevent the risk and spread of infection. Also, should the case arise, remember to bear in mind the need to have a nonimated "Flu Buddy" - some one who is able to collect medication on your behalf. Also, November sees the national roll out of the "Tamiflu" vaccine through GP's Surgeries, for the most serious and "at risk" categories. ** REMEMBER : CATCH IT ! BIN IT! KILL IT! ** Minster Surgery Flu Day This year was a tremendous success with over 800 patients attending the surgery throughout the day. A big thanks goes out to all those Health care professionals involved! Once again, thank you to all who contributed towards our raffle in aid of the Hospice. On the day, we raised well over £100 and currently, the total nears £150. The draw for the raffle will take place on October 30th at 1 pm in the surgery waiting room and all are invited to attend. It will be your opportunity to buy further tickets, and who knows, it could be that lucky winning one! All prize winners will be notified by telephone. Appointments There are still, on average, 3 APPOINTMENTS missed every day! Please, PLEASE REMEMBER TO CANCEL if you no longer need an appointment so that it may be offered and benefit someone else. Who knows, one day, it could be you who benefits! Please note that on making an appointment with the surgery, you will be asked for a brief description of the problem by the receptionist. This is purely to help direct you to the most appropriate health care professional, as the practice now offers many different facilities and of course, all information will be treated in the strictest confidence. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter. Training Day On Tuesday 10th November 2009 the surgery is holding another training day for members of staff. As a result, the surgery will be closed from 12 o/clock onwards that day. Any one who needs the services of a doctor during that time should contact "Doctors on Call" via the normal surgery number - 821333. Christmas Craft Fair and Bazaar November 21st approaches quickly! We only have a couple of tables left so contact us urgently if you are interested, as it promises to be a spectacular event! See our main advert on page 20 of this issue. Your Opinions Count If you have any comments or suggestions you wish to make, or want further information on any of the above please contact : Jean Taylor on 845072 or Ken Self on 821200

November 2009 THE SALVATION ARMY, MINSTER NEW CORPS OFFICER Major Denise Cooper is settling in well and is so grateful for the thoughtful preparations for her arrival and also the incredibly warm welcome she has received from everyone at The Salvation Army and also the wider community of Minster. She is thrilled to have met so many people from within the village already and hopes to get to know many more over the coming weeks. ANNUAL APPEAL A big thank you to all who returned their Salvation Army Gift Envelopes during September. Over £4700 was raised in our Area and will be used to support The Salvation Army's work taking place in their Social Service Centres, community outreach and practical assistance provided through local Salvation Army churches. COMMUNITY SHOP The conversion of our old Hall is well under way and receiving many positive comments. The shop volunteers have been meeting regularly to prepare for the opening. We still need helpers to serve in the shop and to prepare goods for sale. You do not need to be a member of The Salvation Army to volunteer, we want the shop to be a community facility. If you are interested in helping please contact Val Hope on 823830. The next meeting for volunteers will be on Tuesday 3 November and will provide training in the use of the cash register, please contact Val if you are able to attend. SAD LOSS OF A DEAR FRIEND We are sad to acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and soldier, John Couchman. John is someone who is going to missed by so many at The Salvation Army, and also within the village. There are many people who have been quietly influenced, guided and helped by John, not least our friends from Joyful Noise, who were so special to John for over 20 years. John has made a huge contribution to village life and was well-known for his bike repairs and Sales, raising funds for Joyful Noise. Our thoughts and prayers go to his wife, Kathy, and his wider family at this time. STOP PRESS.!! THE SOUTH EAST (KENT) GET TOGETHER-MAKE MUSIC-HIKE-WALK GROUP Join us for a walk in Minster on Halloween (Sat 31st Oct). Dress up if you like. There’ll be a bit of Minster history along the walk and we’ll briefly haunt each pub as we pass for a drink! Visit the groups website or ring Diane on 07717 453106 for more info.

November 2009 MINSTER TWINNING ASSOCIATION Bonjour mes amis and welcome to more exciting news from the Association. AGM: The time has come once again for the Annual General Meeting of the Twinning Association which will take place this year in the Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday 11th November at 7.30pm. As we are losing our Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary, as reported in previous editions of this illustrious news outlet, we are looking for volunteers to fill these positions so that the Twinning can continue to contribute to the School Exchange and also to keep up the good relationship we have with our Twinning partners in Armbouts-Cappel. We also want the Twinning to continue to expand and fill this very valued aspect of our village culture. Nomination forms are available in the Library and also at the Attic, where Chairman Bob will be only too happy to give you his expert advice. So come along, step up and put your thoughts and ideas into practice. No previous experience is necessary as those of us who are leaving will be available to assist when and if required. Don’t let the children in this year’s Year 5 be the ones not to benefit from an exchange visit to France because we cannot fill these positions on the Committee. They love to go there and need your help this year to do so. So come along to the AGM and give your support. This is also my last correspondence as I too am reluctantly giving up this reporting job. So, if there is anyone our there who aspires to the art of public relations and can write a decent newsletter, then again, come along to the AGM and volunteer your services. Hope you have enjoyed reading my Twinning news over the years, if you haven’t well that could be your loss not mine. Remember the AGM - Wednesday 11th November Neighbourhood Centre - starting at 7.30pm. Remember Minster Does Matter................ Au revoir!

N.P. Plastering

From a concerned villager. Dry Lining ~ Screeding ~ Plastering Dear Sir, Coving ~ New Walls & Ceilings ~ Repairs I find it incredulous that the council have agreed to put double yellow lines References & Portfolio in the village at the request of the bus company. This would be the bus company that doesn’t run to time, the drivers are rude available on request and insulting, refuse to stop at certain stops and swear at the children on the Free Estimates & Advice bus! 01843 825 949 What right do they have to be given anything when I feel their service falls or way below what it should be! The double yellow lines are going to change the "centre" of the village 07969 825 085 beyond recognition and it is totally understandable why so many people want to leave the village as it has changed so much in the years I have lived here, not always for the better. MINSTER AND MONKTON There are those who work hard to keep the village a friendly and inviting place but the interference of outsiders is having a negative effect. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION 61 Augustine Road, Tel 821471 Leave the village to those who know what they’re doing before it becomes a ghost village! LIVE MUSIC - QUIZ NIGHTS - RACE NIGHTS (Name & Address supplied)

PETITION ACCEPTED AGAINST YELLOW LINES County Cllr John Davies, Chairman KCC (pictured right with MPC Chairman, Dennis Neville) accepted the petition against the yellow lines in Minster. Dennis Neville, expresses his thanks and concerns to Cllr Davies in the letter below. Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, Minster On behalf of the Parish Council and the residents of Minster I would like to thank you and offer a warm welcome to you, John, and your wife for coming to Minster to see us. We are most grateful to you for making the time available to meet us and to accept the petition which shows the strong feelings against the proposals of Kent Highways to impose yellow lines within certain areas of the village. I know that you will have been well briefed by Councillor Charles Hibberd. Nevertheless I would like to bring one of two matters to the forefront. This order is being imposed without any prior consultation and using what we consider to be very dubious information. Minster Parish Council has always been quite willing to enter into any meaningful dialogue with Highways together with the Police and also with any other interested departments, but we think that all options should be open to negotiations. Minster has been recognised as being a nice place to live in and we do not want Kent Highways to be capable of destroying our accepted way of village life. Dennis Neville, MPC Chairperson

The subject of October’s talk was “Joys of Christmas”. The speaker, Mr. Rob Masters (complete with musical tie!) reminisced about his time Tiled/Slate/Kent Peg/Lead-work as head teacher in a Faversham Primary School at Christmas time, carol Velux Installation/Loft Conversions singing in Boughton-under-Blean, and taking the role of Santa Claus at General Building Work the Village Fair. On the subject of which, we shall of course be taking a stall at our Specialist in Int & Ext Restoration Village Christmas Fair, with a home cooking theme and hampers, plus a raffle, for Fully Insured All Work Guaranteed which contributions were requested. Volunteers were also sought to take part in the entertainment at December meeting’s Party. 01843 825 599 / 07748 409 806 In conjunction with Bee Aware Action Week (highlighting the plight of the honey 63 High Street, Minster CT12 4AB bee), goodies at the coffee and chat morning in October contained honey: in the case of the Scottish recipe “Cranachan”, this also involved raspberries, oatmeal, double cream, and a wee dram! Needless to say, it was the favourite offering. Durlock Lodge Between now and Christmas, we shall be as busy as usual - Acol Group Meeting, Dabble Day, Sunshine Club outing to Bagham Barn, visit to the Alan Titchmarsh Show, Games evenings, Scrabble evening, Handicrafts and Crafts Group Meeting, as well as rehearsals for the party entertainment, and preparations for the Village Fair. The next branch meeting takes the form of our AGM, when the new committee will be elected. This takes place on Tuesday 10 November at 7.30pm in the Village Durlock, Minster, Thanet, Hall. Visitors and new members should please note that, whilst welcome, there will Kent CT12 4HD be no speaker now until the January meeting (details in future editions of MM). Phone 01843 821219

We have just had a successful AGM where Caroline was able to assure us that we now have funds for 2 years worth of Show in the bank. This is a better position than we have had for several years Thank you for supporting us, we can continue to do our job! There are spaces on the Committee should anyone else want to have a more hands on say in the Show, and what happens on the day. Karen in Attwells is probably your best contact. At the AGM we agreed to change the name to "Minster Show incorporating Monkton, St. Nicholas, Acol, Sarre and Cliffsend". This is intended to become a more modern zippy name and include the traditional villages. This is a change of name only - we will still have all the flower, fruit and vegetable categories in the marquee. Look forward to all your contributions towards the Show. It was noted that a number of younger people got involved - please carry on and thank you, as well as the usual "not so young" helpers! Several comments were made about the quality and size of the Parade - well done Minster. Please continue to make suggestions and comments to us, so we can improve your Show. NEWSFLASH!!!

November 2009 Your Letters .... A Big Thank You to the Customers of “The Bell Inn” I would like to say a massive thank you to the customers of the Bell Inn. I have taken part in two charity events this year and have received an enormous amount of support from them. The first event was Race for Life in Palm Bay where they raised over £200.00 for Cancer Research. At the end of September my brother and I took part in the Palace to Palace bike ride from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle in aid of the Princes Trust. This is such an important charity raising money for disadvantaged young adults. We cycled 45 miles and the customers of the Bell Inn raised over £250.00. I would like to make a special mention to Geordie and Peter for their generous donations to both charities and together with Paul Finch they generously donated the contents of their football sweep stake to the Princes Trust. You have all been fabulous, generous and I just can’t thank you enough for your support. Zoe McDonald

Information Request Re: The Cedars Hello. In 1937 I was born in a house named The Cedars, High Street, Minster. Could you please tell me if the house still stands and if so, does it still have the same name? I left Minster with my family in 1940 therefore I have no recollection of my birthplace. Any information you can give me would be gratefully appreciated. Regards, Bernard Longley

November 2009 MINSTER BOWLS CLUB UPDATE You often see me write to praise the talent of the club bowlers in the competitions around Kent. This month I start by praising the talent of John Snowdon and his “mates”. They, after an excellent wartime type meal of ‘bangers and mash’ plus a pudding provided by Pam, Ken Wooldridge and helpers, gave us a variety show – two hours of laughter and enjoyment. Audience participation was to the fore in both parts of the show. How the roof stayed on was a miracle! The first half we saw Frank Lambert singing, Nobby Clark, dance routine with Clive Clark on the drums. As well, Ken Ralph singing “Sweet Caroline”, “The Wonders of You” and “Magic Moments”. Frank came back on to do the Phantom Flasher routine. The second half started with Elvis and Buddy Holly songs by Ken, Johnny House was Max Miller, Nobby did the stripper and jokes. Finally Frank brought the house down with the “One Arm Fiddler”. Now to the bowls news. The ladies challenged the men to a match. The winning captain donated the money raised to his charity. The men won, so I presented 160 to the “Wheels for Ralph” fund. Len Cooper’s triple won the Herne Bay Finals. Short mat has started. We gained 5 new members at the pre-season meeting. So mums, dads, and your children if you would like to get out on those dark evenings why not try and master the art of bowls on the carpets in the club! It’s great fun and it’s helping you keep fit at the same time. -Glynne Hibbert The results from the Minster Bowls Club Finals 19th -20th September Saturday: Men’s Handicap; B. Davis. Ladies Pairs; M. Griffiths and S. Townsend. Men’s 2 Woods; D. Martin. Mixed Triples; N. Wilson, E. Foster, and M. Hedges. Mixed Pairs; R. Foster and S. Davis. Ted Norman Trophy; D. Martin. Men’s Morning League; B. Davis and G. Hibbert. Sunday: Mixed Triples; D. Hughes, P. Fairbrass, and B. Giradot. Men’s Pairs; B. Davis and D. Washer. Bert Cooper Trophy; R. Foster. Ladies Handicap; P. Miles. Ladies Championship; S. Pritchard. Men’s Championship; D. Martin.

REMEMBRANCE TIDE - A SPECIAL EVENT. Recent visitors to the cemetery at St Nicholas-at-Wade might have noticed a brand new Commonwealth War Graves headstone, commemorating Private George Ernest Foad, of the Queen's Royal West Surrey regiment, who died in 1917. Until recently, practically nothing was known about this soldier, save that his name is among those inscribed on the Monkton Village War Memorial. Enquiries locally revealed very little information and he was not mentioned in the official records immediately available. In recent months further research has been carried out by Mrs Janet Graham, Headteacher of Monkton Primary School, and myself, and we now have a fuller picture. George Foad was born in 1889 and lived in Monkton, working first on the land, and then as a colliery tip man ( at the newly opened Chislet Colliery?). He enlisted in the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment in 1915, and was graded fit for active service. He completed basic training but, just before he was to be posted to the Western Front, he became ill with pleurisy. His condition deteriorated over the following months and he was eventually invalided from the service on pension, with a good military character, in July 1916. He died nine months later at his parents’ home at Gore Street New Cottages, from tuberculosis of the lungs and peritoneum. He was 27. Private George Foad was buried in the Cemetery following a service in St. Nicholas' Church conducted by the Vicar of Monkton, the Revd Fabian Brackenbury. [George's mother, Emily, was a St Nicholas' girl.] In more recent years, the unmarked grave has been entirely forgotten, but the clear picture we now have is of a man who had tried hard to do his bit, and it is good to know that his contemporaries in Monkton saw to it that his name was included among those commemorated on the village war memorial. The results of our research were submitted to the Ministry of Defence, who agreed to authorise the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to erect a headstone on Private Foad’s Grave. The stone was finally put in place in May this year, and it is hoped to arrange a short ceremony of Dedication on the Saturday 822954 Minster P.O. before Remembrance Sunday, November 7th, in 821291 821291 for the ‘Exciting’ the presence of descendants of the Foad family. Suzannah with new lines of Gifts Mrs Janet Graham and I are very grateful to Pte Foad’s Headstone all those who have helped us in this venture, for all ages and occasions particularly the St Nicholas-at-Wade & Sarre Parish Council, and Mrs Julie Francis, the former Clerk to the Council who quickly located George We now have in Foad's grave in the excellent cemetery records, and liaised with the War Graves Commission over arrangements for installing the memorial stone. stock a fresh range of Christmas Gifts and Cards The Council also kindly waived their fees in this case. November 2009 Thank you’s & Announcements...... Thanks from Robert and Gwen Heath We would like to express our gratitude to the wonderful Ambulance Crew for their quick response to our call, and the care when they arrived. Special thanks to Jamie Baker for his calming influence. (Missed last month’s MM deadline so Thanks is shown in this month’s publication)

Silver Wedding Anniversary Meal My husband and I have just celebrated our silver wedding anniversary. We booked Morton’s Fork for our celebratory meal. We felt we wanted to contact Minster Matters to pass on our praises for the fantastic meal and service they provided. We were able to decorate the restaurant with photos, banners and balloons. Amie and Jamie who were holding the fort whilst Shaun and Liz were away, did a fantastic job, they couldn’t do enough for us. There were 24 of us in total, the food was excellent and the service second to none. The evening ran like clockwork and everyone had a lovely time. We have been in the village for nearly 3½ years and always try to support our local businesses. We found the perfect venue right on our doorstep and wanted to pass on our recommendations. A big Thank you to all at Morton’s Fork for making our celebrations a success. Shawn and Rachel Miles, Tothill Street

Art Show Thanks Thank you to all who helped and supported us with refreshments during the Art Show - we made £317 for church funds. Janet Walmsley

SCOUTS FLAG APPEAL We believe that there is a Scout flag still in existence, but nobody knows where. I understand it is pale blue with Minster Scouts embroidered on it. If anyone has it or knows where it is we would be VERY pleased to have it back. The new Troop is doing well, growing by the week -we started with 8 and now have 13 - and both kids and leaders are really enjoying it. Over half have never been involved in Scouting at all before. We have a busy term planned and all seem to be enthusiastic and willing to join in. We will be doing a skills day at half term. We had some response from tour ‘wanted’ on FreegleThanet, and have been given shelves and equipment from a youth group that had to close down, but we could still do with maps, out door games and a notice board. Many thanks for your help and support, Barbara

‘Dark’ Standing in front of the house that creaks in the wind and towers above my head was like looking into death’s eye. Despite all of the thoughts that raced around my head I was determined to go into the dark house. “Go on wimp, go in then, if your phone is really worth it then you will go in!” Laura and her friends laughed as she threw my brand new phone into an open window of the house, “Why did you do that?” my voice was quiet and timid so Laura laughed and walked away, “See ya later loser!” Laura yelled back at me. A couple of tears fell onto the ground beneath me before I stepped towards the door of the house. There was no door to the dark howling house, my footsteps echoed through the house and the floor boards creaked beneath me. Laura threw my phone into the first storey window which meant climbing stairs. I found the stairs and walked up them with great caution. Nevertheless I found myself falling through the stairs and into the basement, fracturing most of my ribs and breaking my leg so I could not move from the house, and of course Laura did not tell anyone where I was, which left me in the house, in the dark and alone. Wheels for Ralph Fashion Show A couple of weeks ago on Wednesday, Minster Church of The great fire of Minster England Primary School had a fashion show for Ralph who is a On Wednesday night at 9:00, a big fire happened disabled boy and a brother to 2 of our students Holly and behind my best friend’s house her dog lily was so Amber. It was in the evening that lots of people came into our scared. So was her friend Danielle so scared that I school hall and put on a fashion show so that Ralph’s mum would be hurt? But I wasn’t so yeah for me. Me/ could have enough money to get him a wheelchair. My friend Jenny I was so scared that the fire would come and Danielle was actually in the fashion show and she wore a burn my house down because I am having a new purple, black and white dress with black leggings and a black roof put in so it was very weak that day. Then I dress with decorations. Year 6 did a dance for Ralph and it was couldn’t get to sleep so I went up stairs with my little a huge hit. So, if you did see it I and Danielle hope you had a puppy Lily so yeah I was scared. My big brother Tim good time! went outside to film it with his video camera [how By Danielle and Libby scary]. Meanwhile at Daniele’s house she was crying and hugging her mum/Sarah. Back at my house I was crying to because I didn’t want to die at that age of 11. I had just turned 11 on the 1st of September. On 25th September 2009, Minster Church of England Why Bullying is Nasty Primary School had their Harvest Festival. This year the Bullying is truly nasty because millions of people get theme was colour. All of KS2 went down to the church in nasty bruises every year, If you se it tell your family, the morning. We all sang lots of songs that are to do with an adult or the nearest person you can find people colours. The songs were: don’t like it if its happening to them and I’m sure you Autumn Days, Water of life and Who put the colours in wouldn’t like it if it was happening to you. Jake the rainbow? My class did the colour Orange because we are Orange Class. All of the other classes did the colour of HORSES their class. I had a lot of fun because me and the rest of Have you ever looked at how wonderful these Year 6 got to sit in these really cool stands. I was really creatures are and they say dogs are mans best excited because it has always been my dream to sit in friend but it should be horses and ponies that are them. Anyway, I hope that all of the people who came had named mans best friend. They give you joyful rides a lovely time and because Year 6 won’t be here next year, I that anyone would enjoy and no one could say that hope that you all have a lovely time then as well! it is not fun. You just sit there and they do all the work for you. Also you can feel the cool breeze of the wind just brush gently along your cheeks. They MINSTER are the most wonderful pets and if you take them to Minster won the Kent village of the year award and I shows you can win loads of rosettes and medals am not surprised because Minster is the best village and trophy’s and even gymkhanas its a lot of fun. I have ever come come across and that is why I go By Sophie Stevens to Minster school. It is a very peaceful place like the Gossip shop do delicious food and drinks and Archie’s fish and chip shop they do all the fish you Half Term is Nearly Here can think of. The hard ware shop is owned by a real Half term is next week so you know what that means no happy chappy man and he has all the bits and bobs work for a week!!!!! When Half Term comes I know you need. Londis does all of latest mags the lot. By what I want to play with my friends all day until it’s time Sophie Christina Stevens!!!! to go home. By Rosie Malloy
