Tues 5 May - Fri 15 May The shop will remain open for most of the time with some early evening closures possible to allow fridges etc to be relocated. We wish to apologise to our neighbours and customers for any inconvenience the work may cause. We are very thankful to staff and customers alike for giving us the inspiration to do this and we hope the refit will improve the enjoyment of your shopping experience with us. Ben told MM he intends this to be his final refit before he retires (maybe !!) EDITORIAL

Summer is on its way! Least ways we’ve had a few really nice days so maybe that was actually it, if you blinked you probably missed it. Another business is about to open its doors in the village. Mollie’s Coffee Diane House, formerly No79 and prior to that The Gossip Shop, is due to open on Monday 4 May. Time will tell if it proves to be any more successful than recent attempts to make a go of it, competition in that field is quite strong already so it won’t be an easy market to break into. Let’s hope they at least change the colour of Diana the frontage from that dull battleship grey to something more pleasing on the eye. For those of you who may be interested and I know some couldn’t care less (because they’ve told me so in no uncertain terms before) my health is much improved since the last time I was sat writing this column, so thank you to everyone who has asked after me, either directly or through my better half, I’m pleased to say Kevin I’m well on the road now to a full recovery. Please don’t forget to complete your scarecrow forms and get them back to us at the library before closing date Friday 15 May - let’s make this an event that visitors will want to come back to Minster to see again. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

APPOINTMENT QUESTIONNAIRE Thank you to all those many patients who completed our questionnaire during the past few weeks, and especially for all your very interesting comments and suggestions. All responses have been collated and the findings have been presented to the Practice Partners, who have assured us that action will be taken to resolve many of the issues raised, especially with respect to the appointment difficulties currently experienced by some of our patients. A summary of the results has been published and can be viewed on our notice board in the surgery. MISSED APPOINTMENTS - WHY ? We just cannot understand some people!! This merely worsens the problems experienced by some of our patients and is so selfish and unnecessary. Last month 56 PATIENTS DID NOT attend their DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT and 74 DID NOT attend their NURSES APPOINTMENT, SO THAT’S 130 PATIENTS WASTING VALUABLE APPOINTMENTS and TIME! DON’T NEED IT - CANCEL IT! - KEEP FORGETTING? - REGISTER! One day IT MAY BE YOU who urgently needs an appointment only to be told “SORRY THEY’VE ALL GONE”! OUR NEW PROJECT This year we wanted to purchase something that would be of benefit to all ages, from infancy to the elderly, and assist in the diagnosis of the patient’s illness and breathing difficulties, both at the surgery and in the patient’s home. The following has been suggested: A “Nellcor Portable Patient Monitoring System with Paediatric Connectivity” with an approximate cost of £1300. This type of Pulse Oximetry Monitor was only launched last year and would be a tremendous asset to the surgery and benefit to our patients. Further details can be found on our notice board and all monies raised at our Spring Fayre will “kick start” this project. Also, with funds already raised and following a suggestion made on our notice board, we are purchasing a BMI ( Body Mass Index ) height/weight analysis machine, this is intended for the sole use of our patients and will be located in the “Nurses Wing”. SPRING FAYRE Our Annual Spring Fayre will be held on: Saturday 16 May at the “OLD SCHOOLS”. Tables remain at £9 large, £6 small and of course “FREE ADMISSION”. Several tables have already been sold and only a few small ones remain so BOOK NOW to avoid disappointment. Please see our advert on page23 of this publication for further details. SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will be closed on the following days: Bank Holidays - Monday 4 and 25 May - all day. Staff Training from Midday on Thursday 21 May; Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 23 July. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times. Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive “non urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in May, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049 or via email to

Minster’s Own Hero Those readers watching The World At War series, currently being shown on BBC 2 in the afternoon, may well have not recognised Minster’s own hero in the form of Denis Power, who recognised himself, clearing mines on the beaches at Great Yarmouth. This is a still from the programme showing Denis moving the sand away from one of the mines that had been laid to prevent a German invasion.

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Thursday 28 May Neighbourhood Centre

Zac’s Musings Must be the silly season again, there’s been lots of Spring cleaning and DIY going on at home. The old boy has had to do his other job (repairing computers) upstairs on the spare bedroom floor as the dining room was ‘out of bounds’ whilst the painting was in progress. He appears to be ‘on the mend’ after his recent bout of ill health, as he looks to be putting some weight back on and he’s far less grumpy, so let’s hope the trend continues. A new picture this month - this is me lazing in the armchair keeping a watchful eye on the telly, my usual afternoon occupation.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION The quiz held on the 28 March at the RBL was the best we have had for some time with 11 teams entering. The winning table on this occasion was a mix of Minster and Birchington villagers, who displayed magnificent skills in all the categories. They have thrown down the gauntlet for the next quiz which will be in the Autumn. Will your team beat them? The American style raffle was, as always, well supported. Our thanks go to the RBL, the quiz master and the staff for a great time and buffet. This event has become popular with both villagers and outsiders alike. Sunday 28 June, Anniversary Day in Armbouts Cappel. There are possibly a couple of seats still available on the coach, so please ring Barbara on 07874 214 279 for final enquiries. 1 August and 14 November are the dates planned for 2 future race nights, so keep your diaries free for those. Enjoy the sun and start revising for the next quiz!! Tower Bells There are five bells in St. Mary’s tower. The oldest dates from about 1580 and the youngest from about 1640. Since that time those bells have been rung to call people to church, to announce causes of national celebration and mourning, and to celebrate weddings and Christenings in the village. To those who like and enjoy the sound of the bells, they represent an almost unbroken link with the past and the traditions of our country. Because the ringing of bells by rotating them under the control of a rope, which needs skill and experience to achieve, is an essentially English custom the sound of bells in peal is one of the great auditory hallmarks of England, and Englishness. The occasions when the bells are rung, apart from Services, Weddings, and funerals, are usually times of national importance. They are rung for remembrance services, and then the bells are rung “half muffled”. That means that the clapper has a muffle on one side so that the bell rings with a dull, soft tone on one stroke and then its normal “open” sound on the next. For the death of a monarch the ringing is fully muffled. They may be rung unmuffled as joybells to celebrate the birth of a royal baby or any child, and they are rung at Christmas to celebrate the birth of Christ and at New Year, to “ring in the New”. The ringing of our church bells is a part of our heritage. If you would like to know more about them call in on practice night, Wednesday at 7.30 and you will be very welcome, while the handbell ringers practise at our church on Wednesday nights at 6pm and Saturday mornings at 10am and also welcome newcomers who want to give this team-based music a try.

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI President, Sarah Eaton-Brown, welcomed members and guests to the monthly meeting at 7.30pm on the 14 April. After Jerusalem and various notices from Sarah and Secretary Liz Shervington, the evening’s speaker, Miss Maybe, was ” talk was a real treat, not only did she look introduced. The “ stunning, she dressed two volunteers in “basques” and took them through some rather saucy moves. Her amusing delivery richly entertained everyone and the following refreshment break was very relaxed. Sarah then outlined various plans for the coming months including the Minster Show stall and float, a meeting with Tonbridge WI in Tenterden, May’s Federation Holiday at Denman College, the Scarecrow Competition, the Dabble Day subjects which will include felt making, card or box making and hand bells Our next meeting is one week earlier than normal - on the 5 May. It is the Members Only Resolutions Meeting which will include a competition and judging of 4 cupcakes, cheese and wine will also be served! Diary Dates: Monthly Meeting – Tuesday 5 May, 7.30 at Village Hall (Members Only) Tuesday 19 May - Monthly walk : Sunshine Outing – details to follow Wednesday 27 May - Games Night, Village Hall Committee Room – all welcome

Thinking of a name also helps to develop their character. First create a basic design and gather your material together. A traditional scarecrow was usually a crossed timber figure that was dressed and stuffed to give him volume. If you have never made a scarecrow before, you have a real treat in store.

STUCK FOR IDEAS? Here are some useful web addresses scarecrow.aspx (lots of images of interesting characters here) Also ‘YouTube’ has many ideas and tutorials that may help! For those without Internet access here are some useful scarecrow building tips! Getting started A scarecrow is simple to make and will provide a great opportunity for the whole family or a group to share in its creation. Each one will be individual and you’ll be surprised at the personality they take on.

How to make a simple scarecrow What you need: Two pieces of timber, one slightly longer than the other. Nails or screws and string or wire. An old pillow case, tights or a small flour bag for the head. Needle and thread or stapler. Straw, or other material for stuffing. Clothes, from a local charity shop or from your own wardrobe! Building your scarecrow Attach the two pieces of timber together to form a cross. Make sure that the arms are not too long for a shirt or jacket to be put on later. If you are using stockings for the head, cut off the legs and put one inside the other for extra strength. Stuff it in the shape of a head. Tie the head loosely at the neck end. Paint a face on with acrylic paint or permanent marker, or stitch features with wool or thread. Slide the head onto the short end of the vertical pole, then attach to the body by tying with string or wire. An old football, gourds or cut out discs could also be used for heads. From here, use your own creativity. Drape any clothing onto the poles, stuff and tie off at the wrist, ankles and waist. Attach strands of wool, straw or other fibre under a hat. Tie gloves to the outstretched ends of the crossbar… AND… above all remember rule 14!!

SPECIAL PEOPLE NEVER DIE Time will stop for no one It just keeps passing by Until you lose someone you love Then time just seems to fly It only seems a moment Since my sister passed away It just don’t seem possible It was a year ago today Others may be crying But no tears will leave my eye As you will always live within my heart I have no need to cry It wasn’t you we buried That was just your empty shell And although I cannot see you I know you’re here right now As I travel through my lifetime I know we’ll never part You will be with me every moment Living deep inside my heart When I go to sleep at night I share my dreams with you I can see you are at peace now There’s no more pain for you Your sadness and your sorrow Have left and gone away To be replaced by only happiness Your smile is back to stay I can really see you I can hear you in my mind If I search through my memories You’ll be the one I find I know one thing for certain When it’s time for me to die I will take you to a place with me A place where angels fly Yes we will go to Heaven Together you and I Where we will share eternal love Special people never die … God Bless You Sis … I dedicate this poem To my youngest sister Val And hope that it will comfort her And make her better now D.
