Another quick update on the calendar. Thank you to everyone who has signed up and added events, thanks also to those who have passed on lists of events for us to add for you. We are extremely pleased with the uptake so far and are now well on our way to fulfilling our goal of having all events listed in one place for the benefit of everyone. I can now see it becoming a useful tool for residents and visitors alike, so let’s keep up the good work and remember to add to it regularly. Ray, Editor

We hereby give notice that the inaugural AGM of the MBA will take place on Thursday 29 May 7pm for 7.15pm at the Sports Pavilion in the Recreation Ground, St Mildreds Road. Both MBA members and non-members are welcome to attend and we’re looking to you to come up with thoughts and ideas to take us forward to the next step. We believe we have met our goals for 2013/14 in that we’ve set up the website and produced both a flyer and a directory. Sadly we’ve lost our Hon. Secretary, Charlotte Robinson, due to pressures of work, so we are looking to fill her post and a number of other vacant positions on the committee. Do come along if you have a business in Minster, Monkton, Acol, St Nicholas, Sarre, Manston or Cliffsend. We accept membership applications from all these villages and we’d be pleased to see you.

EDITORIAL Firstly and probably most importantly, I need to say we have sadly found it necessary to increase our subscription charges to account for a rise in both printing and postage charges. We have endeavoured to keep these as low as possible however. New charges are listed on page 2 of this issue. Diane Secondly, on behalf of Minster Matters and the village as a whole I’d like to take this opportunity of welcoming our new Vicar and his family to the village. We all look forward to meeting you and working alongside you. I am told that some of the new play equipment mentioned on the front cover is suitable for use by adults as well as children, but we don’t want to see Diana mums and dads hogging the zip wire or the swings. You must let the youngsters play as well, it’s only fair!! I’m also told that this area could be enhanced in the future with some outdoor gym equipment and possibly other bigger and better things, so keep watching that space, we might all turn into Kevin fitness junkies. Apologies if we’ve ‘squeezed’ your article or poster to get it in this issue, we really had too much for 32 pages but not enough for 36 so some items have had to be scaled down somewhat to be able to include them. We’ve got in as much as we could. So that’s it for this month, just my usual question - where’s Zac?

DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER FOR OUR NEW WEB SITE ! A new more “user friendly’ web site is now available giving Patients access to new on-line services, for example: Ordering repeat prescriptions, making appointments, travel advice for immunisations, access to your own personal details, to verify and amend as necessary. All information will be protected by your own “personal password” to maintain confidentiality and security, and will be accessible on your computer or via a mobile device using a free “App”. Contact the surgery to obtain your registration details and personal ID, then log on at the usual address, . APPOINTMENT REMINDERS VIA SMS TEXT MESSAGE This service is now available to all patients, and hopefully will help overcome the number of “missed appointments”. A text message is sent to your mobile advising you of your forthcoming appointment. If we have your mobile number on record this will be carried out automatically. If you wish to be included in this system, please advise the surgery. MISSED APPOINTMENTS LAST MONTH!!! As if to emphasise the need for such reminders, although last month’s figures are slightly less than previously, they are still unnecessarily high! Last month 77 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 25 did not attend their nurse’s appointment! That’s still 102 patients wasting valuable appointments - so next month - please help us get that figure under 100 by…….. DON’T NEED IT - CANCEL IT ! - KEEP FORGETTING - REGISTER ! SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close at 12.00noon on the following days, Bank Holidays: Monday 5 and Monday 26 May Training Days: Tuesday 13 May, Wednesday 11 June, Thursday 10 July. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these periods. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the “NHS 111 Service” via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on “111“, to receive “non urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial “999“ as normal. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in May, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049.

May 2014

Dear Minster Matters, I am helping Steve and Sam Philpott raise funds for the ‘Minster Great War Memorial Project’ to honour additional men from Minster and Monkton who are not currently listed on our village memorials. Since 2009 I have been tracing the lives of the Minster and Monkton men who fought in the Great War and were lost; I have spent 5 years visiting where they fought, where they lived and where they died, gathering stories and paying my respects. My own great grandfather died in the Dardanelles in July 1915 and is not listed on his own town's memorial, so I understand what it feels like for the families of the missing Minster and Monkton men that Steve and Sam Philpott have found.

Julie Seales WAR MEMORIAL FUND In this the 100th year since the start of WWI we are raising funds for an additional war memorial to enable us at long last to honour all our known dead from that conflict. We have found that about 30 soldiers from ‘The Great War’ are missing from the existing memorial. We would like to thank Minster Parish Council and patrons of ‘The Hair of the Dog’ for money raised to enable us to procure birth certificates for these missing men - documentation we need to be able to proceed with our efforts. If you feel you would like to help towards our goal you can make donations at any of these places in the village: The Saddler Inn, The Bell Inn, The Hair of the Dog Micro-pub, Attwells Newsagents, Royal British Legion Club or via Minster Matters at the library. Thank you in anticipation, Steve Philpott

DO YOU WEAR DENTURES? Dentures have been a taboo subject in the past for some people and so many people don't realise that nearly 1 in 5 adults have a need for dentures. If you are in the position to need dentures you will probably know that you can get them from your dentist although some have had their dentures made instead by a Clinical Dental Technician. There are a number practising, some work with dentists and some work independently. A Clinical Dental Technician focuses on just the process of making and fitting dentures. A Clinical Dental Technician meets with patients and after agreeing a treatment plan, takes a mould from which to start constructing the denture. A Clinical Dental Technician then normally sees the patient four or five times in order to get a really good comfortable fit. There are a number of denture options and styles. Advances in denture technology and materials over the years have led to improved quality and fit. Having good quality and well fitted dentures is really important for people because it can understandably affect their confidence as well as their ability to eat. East Kent has a new dedicated service for patients which concentrates on providing a Clinical Dental Technician service in the comfort of their own home. The service is based in Canterbury and professionals travel out to people’s homes to provide a discreet and quality service. The staff are police checked and qualified to provide the service in the patients home. Hello from Minster's new Vicar As the new Vicar of St Mary's Minster and the Wantsum Benefice, let me introduce myself and my family. We come to Minster from Whitstable where I was Curate at Seasalter and before that we lived in Chartham for many years. Before becoming ordained I was a music teacher and Housemaster at St Edmund's School in Canterbury. I am married to Lorna who is a head of music and a violinist. We have two children, Oliver who is about to take A Levels and intends to study Physics at University in September and Poppy who is taking GCSEs at Langton Girls' School in Canterbury. We are looking forward to living in Minster and meeting and getting to know people in this community and working with our friends in other churches. Please do stop and chat if you see us in the village! We are arriving at a time that is a great season for the Christian Church because we are celebrating the risen Jesus at Easter and all the new beginnings that this brings. Easter blessings, Richard Revd Richard Braddy Vicar St Mary's Minster and Wantsum Benefice.

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI April’s monthly meeting began with Jerusalem and the President’s opening announcements, together with her report on the recent ACM in Folkestone that was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. Sarah was very pleased to tell the meeting that Minster WI has won a £400 bursary and requested suggestions as to how it could be used. She then gave details of the Bruges trip on 4 October, the new members’ evening on 20 May at Marion’s, Coffee Morning on 7 June at Ann’s (plant contributions please) and a reminder of the Wine & Wisdom evening on 25 April in the Village Hall. Secretary, Liz Shervington, then read correspondence to members, all of which were displayed on the notice boards. Martin Newcombe. with his presentation entitled “Food for Free and Herbs that Heal”, was introduced and members were richly entertained by his informative, surprising and amusing talk. Martin went on to answer many questions during the refreshment break. A short quiz followed to select a team for the Top Team Quiz in July at Canterbury College. Glenda then reported on the Theatre Group’s outing and there was a great deal of interest in another production. After the Raffle, Sarah reminded members that the next monthly meeting will be a week earlier than usual as the Village Hall is unavailable on the second Tuesday in the month. During May’s meeting, as well as the usual WI Resolutions Meeting business, Ralph Hoult will present his Old Ramsgate Display. At approximately 9.45pm, and with an amusing anecdote, the President closed April’s meeting. Forthcoming events: 6 May – Resolutions Meeting, 7.30pm in Village Hall – All Welcome 28 May – Games Evening, 7.30 –10.00pm – Committee Room of Village Hall 30 May – Sunshine Outing – 1.30pm – to Faversham Quay

Frankie’s Trip to India

Thanks to everyone who has contributed towards my trip to India, I had an absolutely amazing time!! I raised over £600 from the red churn in the bakery and I particularly want to thank Bruce our baker and my boss, for his endless support and kindness towards helping me. I would also like to thank The Corner House who happily allowed me to host an event and then contributed half of the takings that they earned on the night. During my time in India our project was to help build a carpentry workshop for the children at the school so that they can build their own tables, chairs and cupboards as they have very few of their own. Some of the key highlights of my trip were whilst working in the reserve, I saw a huge amount of wildlife, including a tiger which was an incredible sight to see. Also meeting, communicating and becoming friends with the children of the school. Although we didn't share the same language we were still able to communicate very well and I became very fond of them and I hope to return in two years time! I saw a lot of things that was really challenging, however I think it was good for me to see and it made me appreciate my life a whole lot more.

Bob has had long blonde hair for many years and is quite well known for it! He made up his mind straight away that he wanted to do this for charity. Bob and Hazel wish to say a big thank you for all the support and prayers from customers over this past year and also to all the staff and doctors at the surgery who have been amazing. They also cannot praise highly enough the team at both the QEQM and Kent and Canterbury Hospitals where Hazel has been receiving treatment. Donations are still coming in and so far they have raised over £300. Further donations would be gratefully accepted and can be made via Paypal to this address or alternatively local hairdressers ‘Cuts Incorporated’ in Broadstairs are taking donations for Bob and you can also drop them into Minster Matters at the Library for us to pass on.

Over the next 160 days as you walk to and from the recreation ground alongside the all weather playing area you will hear laughter and chatter from the Bowls Green, yes we are back outside again. Forty members attended as we opened the green for the 2014 season. Both ladies and gents christened their new changing rooms. I believe they were pleased with the hard work Brian Davis and his team had put in during the closed season. Should there be a wheelchair bound person wishing to play this sport, we are hoping soon to have the special chair required for playing on the Green. Anyone not able to walk down to the club from home, don't be shy to make contact, we can pick you up and then return you later. We are leaving the carpets down for any one wishing to play inside, so please come on down and join in with the short mat members. Team Leaders and any other teams of four players wishing to play at our "Open Day", sponsored by Jonathan Cole, please look out for the post bringing this years details. Those in the Village who are thinking shall I or shan't I have a go, DON'T hesitate, come along, we give free, yes free, taster lessons. There won't be any pressure put on you to join if it isn't for you but it might show that your arm and eye co-ordination are better than you thought, even as good as in your youth. All are welcome, we are open 7 days a week, 10.00am till late. My number for contact is 821221 Glynne

LOCAL POLICE REPORT Residents of Minster, I am sure that you will recall in my last article for the Minster Matters 75A Magazine the emphasis that I placed on our current efforts to address parking around Minster Primary School. This is an issue that many residents feel passionately about, and also a large number of the parents attending the school to collect their children have spoken with me extensively about parking and high traffic flow in the area. I have arranged a meeting for Tuesday 22 April at the Primary School which will be attended by representatives from Kent Police, Kent County Council, Minster Parish Council and Minster Primary School. I have developed several initiatives We are now an that I hope will help to address the parking problem and the objective of Orthopaedic Referral Centre this meeting is to discuss the viability of their implementation in Minster, Quality Service whilst also seeking to identify any further measures that could be of at affordable rates assistance. Naturally I will update you all with any information that arises from this meeting, but I wanted to provide some reassurance that this is an issue that Kent Police and other agencies are working to resolve. Many of you have spoken with me either in person whilst on patrol or via the telephone about vehicles not displaying a valid tax disc in the village. I understand that this can be a frustrating matter for road users who have paid money for a tax disc for their car, and I would encourage residents to contact me if they observe any vehicles without a valid tax disc on display. I have observed a small number of vehicles not displaying a tax disc whilst in the village over the past month and have acted accordingly, either issuing advice to owner of the vehicle to get the tax renewed or reporting the vehicle to the DVLA so that they can pursue any suitable action. I have recently liaised with Special Sergeant Woodrow to discuss the speed of vehicles entering the village via Tothill Street as I know this is a concern for many residents in the village. I have personally conducted speed checks and can confirm that vehicles were within the speed limit when entering via Tothill Street; however it is something that we will continue to monitor to ensure vehicles are not exceeding the speed limit when coming into Minster. There is a Rural Speed Watch scheme that is staffed by volunteers from local villages, and I am more than happy to direct any residents who are interested in being involved in this project to the appropriate people. Kind regards, Steve (PCSO Steven England) e: m: 07772 225 942

The BEST things in LIFE are free. You ask me what it is that uncoils my springs. This is a simple task to answer true. I don my walking boots and off I go. To walk the lanes and tracks, as to me this brings, an unequalled sense of peace, and you'll be surprised just how much stress can be released, just by standing quietly beneath a tree, and watch the birds flitting amongst the leaves. MEMORIES LAST FOREVER Those feelings of grief Are the pains we cannot hide Came with sadness and sorrow On the day that Shirley died

Shirley’s time on earth has ended But her soul will never die For it’s going on a journey To a place where angels fly

We keep asking the same question That brings the teardrops back again Why did Shirley have to suffer And go through so much pain

Her soul will rest in Heaven But soon it will depart For its final destination Is deep within your heart

You’re surrounded by an emptiness With feelings you don’t know But if your life is to go forward You must let the hurting go

Then the sun will start to shine again And the darkness then will go With the future looking brighter It’s the time when we will know

Then one day you will awaken And look up to the sky That’s the moment you will realise It’s the time for tears to dry

The love we shared with Shirley Is with us every day And the memories that we treasure Are in our hearts to stay

God bless you Sis This poem is dedicated to Shirley Hobbs who sadly passed away on Monday 7 April 2014 aged 70 years From the whole family (Memories last forever) and so will our love for you. X D. Lowery 2014

MINSTER ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION This year will be the 44th time that we have staged this show. From humble beginnings the show has grown, both in the number of exhibits displayed, and the quality of the finished works. If you would like to exhibit your work with us we would be delighted to hear from you. We accept any medium, ie: oil, watercolour, pen and ink etc etc. We also have entry space for photography, glass, wood, ceramics and jewellery; in fact anything that you have produced and that you would like other people to see, and hopefully, buy. For more details and an entry form please contact: Ann and Jamie Thomson on 01843 822156. The show is held on the first weekend in October, which this year will be from Friday evening 3 October until Sunday afternoon 5 October, so you have lots of time to grab your paint brushes, cameras, potters wheels or chisels and get creative! The only thing that we do insist upon, and we shall ask you to sign a declaration, is that the work is produced by you alone. Many thanks, hope to hear from you soon.

Zac’s Musings Well since I was here last we’ve been away on a short break. Not boating this time but caravanning instead. Now I’m not sure which I like the least, boating I can’t get my head around, why would anyone want to live on the water where you’re forever moving about and as for caravanning it’s like being stuck in a little box with no outlook and absolutely freezing cold at night - it’s the first time I can ever remember shivering for so long - I even had to squeeze beneath ‘his’ duvet I was that cold. However it was a break away from the computer and the endless ‘soaps’ on the TV so it wasn’t all bad. Back home again now though and he’s still worrying about the magazine on top of which this month he’s also fretting about the Business Association and the forthcoming AGM, so let’s hope it all goes swimmingly and we can soon get back to some form of normality, whatever that may be like !!

Skip2BFit Competition

Thanet Council Chambers Visit At the beginning of March some of the School Councillors, from years 5 and 6, visited the Thanet Council Chambers in Margate. They attended a meeting for the launch of ‘Green Travel Champions’. As Minster has a walking bus and encourage our children to walk, cycle, scoot or park and stride, particularly on a Friday for “Active Bug”, it was good to hear further details about these and other green travel initiatives. The children asked some very sensible questions to the speakers using the chamber’s microphone system. There will be further information coming soon regarding our current walking buses and the possibility of a third bus. Well done to those children who came along, you represented Minster School brilliantly.

Tri Golf Inter-House Competition This terms’ inter-house competition was a Tri-Golf challenge. All children joined in the competition and completed a number of golfing activities, with a focus on our school value “Engagement”. The overall winners were Viking House who earn themselves fifty extra house points to be added to their total at the end of the summer term.

Guinness World Records Quiz The Mini House Challenge this term was a Guinness World Records Quiz and was won by Roman House, who managed to get 9/12 of the questions correct. There were some very tricky questions so well done to those children who took part for their Houses, you all did amazingly well.

Mrs Wish, Mrs Vinson and Mrs Gillatt took 24 children to the annual Skip2BFit competition. All the children represented the school really well, trying their hardest and displaying our school values of resilience and aspiration! Mrs Wish was so proud of all of the children that participated. Unfortunately we did not win a cup, but we did come 3rd in the Challenge Cup which was a great achievement. If you would like to go to Skip2BFit next year, get practising!
