our doors. These can be anyone from duster sellers to people looking to do odd jobs either on building or in the garden. It’s these characters we need to be aware of and hopefully avoid. Most, if not all reputable traders do not need to call door to door for their business and therefore those that do are probably the ones to say NO to. Don’t accept a doorstep caller’s off the cuff quote for any works they might want to Logo designed by Jack Lamport carry out on your property. Also, be aware of any of your neighbours that might be vulnerable to these types and let "CHERRY ORCHARD TRACK" me know if there is something you aren’t sure of. If I’m not on duty please leave a message for me to follow up with as UPDATE We have had a great deal of correspondence and phone much information as possible, particularly any vehicle calls on the subject of the 'track' that has been closed by the registration numbers and makes that you might recognise. We are lucky here in Minster that we rarely suffer from Persimmon development. I have actually seen and what is commonly known as “rogue traders” and that is photographed a map from 1872 that shows it as a track running down the boundary of the field where it has always how we want it to stay. You may have read the recent articles in MM detailing plans we have to create a Cold Call run. We have heard from villagers that they can remember it Free Zone for the village and with this in place I’m sure it from their childhood and also that their parents and will help us to remain safer by letting these characters know relatives used it prior to that to access the area around the that Minster is not an easy touch and they would be wasting woods and alongside the railway track for the purposes of their time calling in the first place. As soon as I have more on this I will update you but in the meantime thanks for all employment. So there is no doubt in my mind that it has definitely your support in this matter. There have been several reports recently of a group of been in use long enough for it to receive serious youngsters knocking on people’s doors and windows in the consideration to be recognised as an official public right of evening in some parts of the village. I say evenings but there way, we just have to get the forms signed off and returned have been reports this occurs as late as 10 or 11 o’clock at and we are then in the hands of the hierarchy that will night. This is totally unacceptable as from what we know ultimately make the final decision. Thank you to everyone who has come forward with these are youngsters of about 11/13 years old. I’d like to think that most responsible parents would be information and memories, it has all been very useful and wanting their children at home by then and if not would enlightening. Let's hope our quest is not in vain want to know where they are. ‘Words of Wisdom’ ?? Myself and your local police officers have been and will continue to gather information about these incidents and I from our Community Warden know the police will come down very hard on anyone found causing this form of anti-social behaviour. We all remember the days when we thought it was a good laugh by knocking on someone’s door and running away. But I remember this would have happened a lot earlier in the day and I also remember suffering the consequences when we were caught. This is not the same Draft Signs unfortunately and we need to put a stop to this as soon as we for CCZ Scheme can and we need your help with any information you might The larger one is proposed have to help us bring this to an end. for all road entrances to the Fortunately, there are only a small minority of our village whilst the smaller youngsters causing this nuisance and we must keep things in one is for use as a door perspective, we don’t want to give the impression that there sticker on individual are gangs roaming our streets. This clearly is not the case properties here in Minster, but part of my role is to help deal with these It’s good to have the lighter evenings with us for a few matters and to reassure the public where I can that they are being dealt with. months, together with hopefully some good weather. “ATTRACTION OF THE MONTH” You will see from the Centre Page spread this month that we have started a new initiative which we have named “Attraction of the Month”. This gives the chosen venue a page and a half of “free” advertising in exchange for a number of entry tickets, which we will then give away to lucky local residents. If you work at, or know of, an “Attraction” that might like to be considered, by us, for inclusion, then please let us here at MM know. (our full contact details can be found on Page 2) We start off this month with Wildwood at Herne Common and they have kindly donated us 5 family tickets to give away. It’s so easy to enter and will be a great day out for the lucky winners

Brenda

EDITORIAL A shorter piece than normal because we wanted to get a mention in, quite early, about our latest initiative as mentioned in the article above. Eve I’ve even let the “poor parkers” off this month as no-one has sent me any pic’s and I’ve been too busy to get out and about with my camera. Perhaps we’ll get a real good one to make up for it next month !!! As you will have read on the front page, we are going Diane ahead with the C.C.Z. scheme as we didn’t receive a single objection to our article in the March issue. We are now actively seeking funding for the road signs and window stickers and we can hopefully give you a further Nora update on our progress next month. There is no school page this month due to the Easter holiday period but we have used that space to expand our “What’s On” pages as we had so much to get in. There are no M.P.C. Minutes this month as although we Heather asked for them on a couple of occasions they failed to materialise before we went to print. I took a rap on the knuckles last month for my mentioning a possibility of more housing over and above the present Sue development. I believe I was misread as I never said there was to be any further development only that there were rumours about possible plans being submitted and the idea that land to the north of Prospect Road may also be considered at a much later date. I did say “Never say Never” because someone will always want to develop more properties in the area at some time and after all the market will improve eventually Enough from me, that’s my piece until next month. Where’s Zac today ?

PRACTICE OF THE YEAR AWARD 2008

General Builder

Congratulations To MINSTER SURGERY for being awarded “HIGHLY COMMENDED” (or 2nd place!!) for the year 2008. Once again first place eluded the surgery because they achieved the same result in 2007. The award is particularly coveted by all surgeries within the “Patient Care Trust” because it is voted on purely by the patients and covers all aspects of the Practice, Doctors, Nursing and Reception staff. Mrs Alice lngham, Practice Manger, was naturally very pleased with the result, but commented that everyone was secretly hoping for “top spot” on this occasion. “It will just make us try harder this year in our endeavour to reach the top” was her response! Never the less, It was still a tremendous achievement again, so well done everyone! Patient Liaison Group

THANK YOU...... To the anonymous person who placed a note in the Gossip Shop box for us, suggesting we hold a regular monthly photo competition. Whilst this is a great idea, on paper, our present finances wouldn’t allow for us to commit to monthly cash prizes. However we will take the idea on board and maybe do something with it in the future, perhaps special events, e.g. Flower Show, Christmas Lights, Open Gardens etc. We’ll give it some thought and see how we can best finance such a project, so watch this magazine for the future thoughts of the editorial team.

They were joined by two players from Bournemouth Bowls Club. They went on to reach the final, playing 7 knockout rounds, finally being beaten by opponents from the Jack High club in Hayes, Middlesex, who have been champions for the past five years. Minster- in- Thanet WI. Our president Joan Backler welcomed members, visitors and our speaker to our April meeting. Our speaker Mr Wagner had stepped in at very short notice, he provided an interesting and humorous evening "Phantasmagoria". Our March Wine and Wisdom was a resounding success lots of laughter and from some tables lots of wisdom. Olive one of our members and her husband Reg were presented with a card and rose bush to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Tessa gave a report on the Annual Council Meeting of the East Kent Federation, which marked the start of the federation's 90th birthday year and details of some of the events that are planned. Other members and friends had attended the filming of the Alan Titchmarsh show in London; all agreed it had been an interesting, informative and enjoyable show and day out. During one of the intervals Dorothy, one of our members, presented Alan with one of her famous drizzle cakes and has received a delightful hand written thank you letter pronouncing her cake "Delicious”. The Sunshine Club are looking forward to a visit to Sara's Chocolate Deal with a stop at an alpine nursery. At our next meeting May 12th we hope to unveil a plaque in memory of Valerie Hughes commemorating her inspirational work in connection with the Millennium Wall Hanging. Later that evening we will be having a quiz to pick our team for the Top Team Quiz. This will also be our Resolution meeting and will be held at the village hall starting at 7.30pm.

My walk along Rivers Court Trail

Sunday Carvery 12 noon - 4 pm

Beautiful Peacock Butterflies flutter near. The Blackthorn in bloom where after this the Sloes will appear. The miniature blue and white Speedwell looks up at me sweetly. The golden Celandine smiles at me neatly. Even the Dandelion’s head looks like a sunshine globe. My stroll through Rivers Court trail, was delightful, near my abode. All peaceful and quiet except for the songs of the birds. Perhaps one day soon the call of the Cuckoo may be heard. I have seen this visitor to our shores in this vicinity each year. I hear tell that these birds are not arriving as they used to, bringing a fear. Just imagine our late spring and early summer without hearing “Cuckoo Cuckoo”. Without doubt this would be a very sad thing, what say you? Now as well as the treats I have mentioned above. I gathered more Oyster shells from the fields, this I love. Sending my head back to my history books at school. We know the Romans came to our shores and us they did rule. Now they just loved to eat this seafood, and they lived in this village. Just like the Vikings and Saxons the latter did pillage. Although the sea at one time reached our Abbey gates. The Oysters came from the seas at Whitstable, I have told relate. On this seafood the Romans did feed every day. They threw all the shells untidily away. So as the farmer ploughs the earth when the time is right. I go searching for the broken Oyster shells, that often shine bright. Later when the Blackthorn’s blossom goes May bloom will glow. In other words the Hawthorn’s pretty white flowers along the hedgerows will show. Yvonne PLASTERING

May 2009 MINSTER FLOWER SHOW

MALOYS MOWERS

David Oakley MCFHP, MAFHP

WARNING: you may notice a change of name on posters / road signs as we get towards the Show. This is for a variety of reasons - not least the fact that people outside of the Village think the Show is just a pile of plants! We (the Committee) are going to use the phrase "Minster Show". The schedule will still be titled "Minster Flower Show incorporating the surrounding Villages" in a traditionally fun cover with all the competition classes and rules. Launch Day - for the aforementioned, schedule is Saturday 9th May outside The Gossip Shop from 10-12. There will be FREE "Grow for the Show" plants for the children, schedules will be on sale plus RAFFLE TICKETS. We are lining up some fantastic prizes - if you feel you have something you could offer as a prize and we have not contacted you yet - contact us! Melvyn on 822820 is doing a brilliant job so far; but has big plans so needs some big prizes! Back by popular demand. Just to prove we can listen we are repeating the "Dogless Dog Show" and adding the "Catless Cat Show". So along with your photos for the Marquee, get clicking your favourite pets. There will be a small entry charge on the day, to pay towards prizes. Thank you for your continued support.

Regular sessions are held (either in person or over the telephone) with actions taken by the client between each session. Who hires a Life Coach? Whether you want to sort out what you want to do with your life, change direction, make a fresh start, or build on the success you have already achieved, it is never too early or too late to take a look at your options and goals and take positive steps to achieve them. Not only is this Midsummer Day, it's also Father's Day this year -- so what better treat for your Dad than to take him out for a pleasant concert? In fact, you could really spoil him as the English Speaking Union are offering cream teas with music at Slate Barn, Seamark Road earlier that afternoon (2:30-5:00) !! For further details contact Ben Jones, 01843 847701

For those interested in local concerts but frustrated by not knowing what's on -- or finding that several events clash on one day – a group has been set up online on FaceBook to share information in one convenient place. The group mainly lists classical / choral / folk events rather than rock & pop pub gigs. Visit Thanet Classics at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58464537548 (or simply search for it online)

The indoor season ended on a high for those playing under the team name of the “Hinds”. In Short Mat where they play in the bowls pavilion for home games, they finished top of the East Kent Division two. They now look forward to being back in Division One where they played for many years. The seven Minster bowlers who play indoors at Betteshanger also under the team name “Hinds” won the Division two league in their first year. They will be playing in the Betteshanger Division one next winter. The same team ended the season on a high by winning the Division knock out competition, congratulations to Glynne Hibbert, Alan Griffiths, and skip Brian Davis. Sunday April 5th saw a good turn out to watch the finals of the club short mat competitions. It is nice to see ‘New Names’ being added to the honours board. Looking back over the winter or indoor season those club members who have raised funds for the Club by attending those functions, we thank you. Now that we have to be more self sufficient, these functions plus others have to continue until the loan for the pavilion is paid off. I must pick out two people, firstly Pam Wooldridge and her helpers for raising well over £700 in cooking Sunday Dinners & other meals, also Brian Davis and his helpers with another £500 organizing quiz nights, race nights and the Xmas bazaar. We hope more members and their friends will be involved next year to help maintain our funds. The opening day turned out better than was forecast with a nice sunny afternoon. We had an excellent turn out to bowl and had an enjoyable roll up on the green which played far better than expected. Thank you Mother Nature and our Groundsman Neil Cooper. The first wood was bowled by Vice President Dennis Neville (pictured above) due to the incapacity of President Dick Stott. By the time you read this we will have played our first outdoor match. A new season is under way, so for all those playing members let’s hope they get plenty of sun on their backs with some good results.

DISCOVER WILDWOOD Kents Unique Woodland Discovery Park. Get nose to nose with nature here at Wildwood as you meet animals from the British countryside in their most natural of settings, an ancient woodland that dates back to the Domesday Book. Hear a pack of wolves send their wavering howl through the trees as they would have done 1,000 years ago, or a red deer stag deeply bellowing his challenge, the bubbling call of the pool frog, a tawny owl hooting to claim his territory and the snorting and snuffling of wild boar as they root through the woodland floor. You’ll experience many of these animals for yourself as you follow the twisting paths through the woodland, but you can also take advantage of keeper talks and feeds to see some of our animals at closer quarters and hear about their lives and how they have formed part of our history and folklore. Hear about our conservation projects to help endangered species and our work to bring back to the countryside the big grazing animals that shaped the British landscape. Special talks all year round As well as these fun packed events you can experience our special animal talks every weekend and every day of the school holidays. Inspiring Group Visits Wildwood has an exciting range of activities for schools and groups. For more information on group visits, contact the Head of Education on 01227 712111 or e-mail anne@wildwoodtrust.org Enjoy your day among the same animals that would have lived in the wild wood that covered much of Britain so long ago and which gave Wildwood its name. For more information on these events and to book, please visit our website: www.wildwoodtrust.org or telephone 0871 7820081. Information also available - Kent Tourism Alliance 0906 294 1191 calls 25p per min. Why should we care for wildlife? “The Earth does not belong to us; we belong to the Earth. This we know: all things are connected like the blood which unites one family. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the Sons and Daughters of the Earth. We did not weave the Web of Life; we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the Web, we do to ourselves”. “We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The wolf, the deer, the great eagle ...these are our brothers. When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the land, will the wild wood still be here?”. Chief Seattle, Suguamish Tribe 1854.

Recent messages from Kent Trading Standards Police recently received a report from a resident in Birchington, Thanet. The resident has an alarm system, with a box on the front of the house. A note was put through the door asking for the householder to contact an alarm company. The alarm company then contacted the householder (the householder did not respond to the note) and stated that a customer of theirs who lives nearby called them out because the alarm was sounding, so they attended and repaired the fault. They state that they will be happy to attend again and repair any other faults for free. The company then attended and said the work is more than they expected and it would cost to repair (£170 in this case). It is believed this is a scam and Trading Standards have been informed. Genuine companies rarely tout for business in this way. Always consider getting further quotes from security installers registered with NACOSS, before agreeing to any work being done. Kent Trading Standards have received a number of reports from people who have been telephoned by callers who tell them that they have won a holiday. The calls are believed to originate from abroad and the callers sometimes appear to have some personal information about the recipient and will ask for more personal information. If you receive a similar call please take care. Do not give the caller any personal information or confirm any information that they seem to have. If you have not entered a competition for a holiday, you cannot win it. Do not be afraid to put the phone down if you are at all doubtful about the motive for the call. For information on your rights as a consumer please call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. Good Food, Local Real Ales Trading Standards have received a number of complaints about a UK based Bat & Trap (Pitch for Hire) business that operates from call centres based in India. The business is a claims Pool Table management company who offer to reclaim bank charges. Consumers have Sponsors of Saddlers reported to us that the callers are quite aggressive in their manner and may give the impression that they are from an agency like Trading Standards or are linked Sunday Football Team to the Ministry of Justice. Claims management companies do have to be registered Regular Disco’s with the Ministry of Justice in the UK and this register is maintained by Trading Standards, but they are not operated by either organisation. Worryingly the callers Open all day on Friday, Saturday & Sunday with normal hours Monday to Thursday do seem to have some information about the person they are calling such as their credit or debit card number or may know that they are already making a claim for the refund of bank charges. We suspect that the caller only knows the first 4 digits of the card number which identify the issuing bank and may not have access to other personal information. Cont’d overleaf......

Usage & Disposal of Low Energy Bulbs. Official advice from the Department of the Environment states that if a low-energy bulb is smashed, the room needs to be vacated for at least 15 minutes. A vacuum cleaner should not be used to clear up the debris, and care should be taken not to inhale the dust. Instead, rubber gloves should be used, and the broken bulb put into a sealed plastic bag - which should be taken to the local council for disposal. Unbroken used bulbs can be taken back to the retailer if the proprietor is a member of the Distributor Takeback Scheme. Otherwise, many local waste disposal sites now have the facilities to safely collect and dispose of old bulbs. However, this advice is not printed on the packaging that low-energy bulbs are sold in.

The weather is getting warmer, spring is in the air. It’s the perfect time for a weekend picnic. Eco-Tip: When you are going out for the day, pack your sandwiches and other food items in reusable boxes and don’t forget to put any waste you do generate in the bin.

May 2009 COMPUTER CORNER

ED K C JA

HI

Files and Folders Explained If you are new to computing, you may have come across the words ‘file’ and ‘folder’ and perhaps considered them to be the same thing. Indeed, in the real world, they usually are the same thing (e.g. I keep my bank statements in my banking file and my gas bills in my utilities folder). However, in the heady world of computers they are different. Let me explain: Your computer has a big storage area to keep your personal ‘stuff’ in. This ‘stuff’ might be photographs, letters, music tracks, your CV or a video of Auntie Flo falling over at Dave’s wedding. Whatever your personal ‘stuff’ is, each individual item is a ‘file’. Your individual items (files) are stored in containers on your computer called ‘folders’. Most new computers these days usually come with a few folders ready and waiting for you to put your ‘stuff’ or ‘files’ in. Such folders include the ones named ‘Pictures’, ‘Documents’, ‘Music’ and ‘Videos’. Many computers are clever enough to know that the school photo of your grandson should be kept in the ‘Pictures’ folder, the ‘Thank You’ letter to Minster Matters should be kept in the ‘Documents’ folder and Frank Sinatra’s My Way should be stored in ‘Music’. But don’t worry if things are not in the right place. You can move your stuff around your folders so they are where you expect them to be. You can also create new folders to put your stuff in, thus keeping your computer neat, tidy and organised. So there we have it. In a nutshell, ‘files’ are items stored in containers called ‘folders’. You can find your ‘folders’ either by clicking on the Start Button in Microsoft Windows or for those of you who own an Apple Mac, they’ll be in the Finder.
