Colin Holden (Stoobs to his friends) Minster Born & Bred Seen here at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with Snowboarding Bronze Medal Winner Jenny Jones. Colin tells us; I work for British Ski & Snowboard as the British Snowboard Director. We are the national governing body for skiing and snowboarding and work towards developing our riders to world class level with the Olympics being one of our main aims. I assist the performance director and the coaches to create training programmes as well as put plans in place to help gain funding to pay for the programmes. I've been involved with British Snowboarding for 10 years - from the days when we had no funding and the riders had to make their own way around the world to compete. It's all voluntary - I do have a real job !

CLOSURE OF ENVY HAIRDRESSERS I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my customers, past and present for their continued support over the last 6 years. I have made some fantastic friends and have lots of wonderful memories. The premises are now up for sale and as of 15 March we will be closing our doors for the last time, to embark on a new venture. I will be offering a mobile hairdressing service and hope the friendships we have built will continue. Thank you to all who have helped in the running of Envy from start to finish, customers, staff, family and friends, I could not have done it without you. For bookings after 15 March please call 07938 104 594 Thank you Leanne McCarthy

EDITORIAL Where do the weeks go? I’ve no sooner put my feet up after completing one issue when all of a sudden it’s time to start again on the next. Apart from this hat I wear a number of others, not least my ‘Show’ hat Nora now that we are into Schedule preparation mode. I will be out in the next week or so chasing advertisers for this years issue. So if you had an advert with us last year then look out for me either knocking on your door or dropping a letter through it instead. And I’d appreciate a prompt reply so Henry as I know how many spaces I have to fill. It’s sad to see another business closing it’s doors in the village, but good that the proprietor is going to continue her trade albeit in a mobile mode from now on. We at MM wish Leanne all the best for her future trade. Diane You’ll read elsewhere in this issue about a new venture we at MM Towers are taking on, which has meant we needed to recruit another member to the team and who better than the very person that made the suggestion in the first place - “Serves you right Tony - I’ve told you before Diana keep your lips sealed and sit on your hands that way you don’t add another hat to your own vast collection” - seriously though we welcome Tony (The Bell) Goodman (or Quasi as I affectionately call him) to our fold, - let’s hope we get all those onboard that we need onboard to make it work. Kevin Well looks like I’ve run out of space again so no chance of telling you about our flooding - ah well maybe Zac will have something to say about that!! So just enough space left to ask the usual question ‘Where is Zac’? OH!! AND POLICE CONTACT POINTS ARE BACK see page 21

NEW SURGERY WEBSITE A new, more “user friendly’, web site has been launched giving patients access to the on-line services offered by the Practice, for example: ● Ordering repeat prescriptions ● Making appointments ● Travel advice for immunisations ● Access to Patient details, to verify/amend as necessary All information will be protected by your own “personal password” to maintain confidentiality and security, and will be accessible via your PC or mobile device via a free “app”. Log on at the usual address: www.minstersurgery-thanet.co.uk or contact the surgery for further information and to register your details. We will also be holding demonstrations at the surgery to familiarise patients with the system, so please advise us if you are interested in attending. APPOINTMENT REMINDERS VIA TEXT MESSAGE We will shortly be launching this service to try and overcome the number of “missed appointments”. A text message will be sent to your mobile phone advising you of your forthcoming Doctor’s appointment. If we have your mobile telephone number on record this will be carried out automatically. If we do not have your mobile number on record and you wish to be included in this system, please let the surgery know. If however, you do not wish to receive such reminders, please advise the surgery accordingly. MISSED APPOINTMENTS LAST MONTH!!! As if to emphasise the need for such reminders, last month’s figures are, as always, extremely alarming ; 74 PATIENTS did not attend their DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT! 37 PATIENTS did not attend their NURSES APPOINTMENT! SO A TOTAL OF 111 PATIENTS WASTING VALUABLE APPOINTMENTS! DON’T NEED IT - CANCEL IT !……KEEP FORGETTING - REGISTER ! In common with other NHS Services, a list of those patients is now being compiled and action will be considered against repeat offenders. SURGERY TRAINING DAYS Please note that the surgery will close at 12.00 Mid-day on the following days: Wednesday 12 March; Thursday 10 April; Tuesday 13 May Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the “NHS 111 Service” via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can dial “ 111 “ direct, to receive “non urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For Urgent/Life threatening issues, dial “ 999 “ as normal. ANNUAL SPRING FAYRE - DATE FOR YOUR DAIRY Our Spring Fayre will be held on: SATURDAY 17 MAY at the “OLD SCHOOLS” Table bookings are now being taken SO BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT - RING 821200 NOW! All proceeds go towards our project to purchase a “ Heart Monitor”. KCC Trading Standards Trading Standards are warning that Rogue Traders have been leaving markers on properties to indicate it is a good property to target. Traditionally markers were a cement mark on the building however the latest reports suggest that unusual objects are being left in gardens or next to the front door. These are objects that you would not normally associate with the resident. Be aware of any items that might seem misplaced on properties and report any concerns to Trading Standards via Citizen Advice consumer service on 08454 04 05 06. You can also visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk for a list of our Buy with Confidence traders. Trading Standards are also aware that charity collection bags bearing the name ‘Cobalt’ are being distributed across Kent. The charity Cobalt no longer use bags to collect donations and any proceeds from goods donated using the bags will not be received by the charity. Anyone wishing to donate to Cobalt’s diagnostic imaging work (helping people affected by cancer and other life-limiting conditions) should do so via their website at www.cobalthealth.co.uk. Genuine charities and businesses do distribute bags and collect unwanted items from householders. To ensure your unwanted items go to legitimate good causes, the following advice will help:● Read any information given on the leaflet or collection bag carefully. ● If a company name or number is given, the status of that company can be checked on Companies House website at www.companieshouse.gov.uk. ● If a charity is named contact them and ask if the collection is legitimate. ● If a charity number is given, check this with the Charity Commission on 0845 300 0218 or on their website at www.charitycommission.gov.uk. If you receive one of these bags please report the details to Trading Standards, via Citizens Advice consumer service or you can fill in our scams report form online.

CLIFFSEND SHOP VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED Cliffsend Shop is a not for profit business run by a small army of volunteers, both in the shop and on the committee, to enable the residents of Cliffsend to have a shop facility within their village. We sell a variety of groceries including milk, bread, eggs, fresh, chilled and frozen goods, sweets and chocolate, greetings cards, stationery, newspapers (preordered) and household goods, plus fresh bakery products on a Saturday morning. We also have a dry cleaning service and a Post Office facility. The shop is very important to our residents particularly the elderly and those who have difficulty travelling out of the village. The Shop is often the daily social hub of the village where customers and volunteers meet and catch up with one another. Just being able to come into the shop and chat to other people whilst buying their daily newspaper, is very important to some of our customers. We have a wonderful team of volunteers, we are indebted to, who freely give their time to work two hour shifts behind our counter. Due to the retirement of one of our long standing volunteers and illness, we are seeking more volunteers either for permanent slots or to go on the emergency cover list. Don't be put off joining us if you haven't worked in a shop before, as full training will be given. An enjoyment of meeting and talking to people is all that is needed! Why not come and meet us and have a chat if you think you might like to join us? Please feel free to speak to our Volunteer Co-ordinator Peter Corley on 07528 752974, you would be doing us a great favour if you could join us for two hours a week!

Ÿ All denture repair work carried out by a local dental technician Dentures collected & returned to your home within 2 hours for just £30.00 Ÿ Collection and return of dentures “All Day, Every Day”

In the last edition we asked you to tell us about your Broadband access over the Christmas period. We had one response from Noel and his reply deserves to be printed in full. “We became so fed up with the unreliability and often complete lack of broadband in Minster that we changed to mobile WiFi. Ours is supplied by 3 Mobile in the form of a mobile phone sized modem and a dongle containing a Sim card, either of which we can use and which we can carry with us anywhere in the country. We can tune in anywhere and never have to pay expensive charges in hotels. Our phones can also use WiFi from this. Our part of Minster is a frustrating place where the net regularly seemed to vanish just when you were in the middle of something important, or was impossible to get onto. We had few problems over Christmas, however it was the mobile phone system which caused us, our friends and family to be unable to communicate. In total we had phones in the house from four different providers and none worked reliably from Christmas Eve to after Boxing Day. This was very frustrating for those who were on call through work or relied on their mobiles as their main phones. I don't know what can be done to solve Minster's broadband problems, but that is how we have overcome ours.” This month we would like your opinions on the proposed Manston Parkway station. This is to be built on the existing railway line to Ramsgate. Do you feel it would be too far from the airport terminal to be of use? Would there be a knock-on effect for Minster station? We will keep all replies and submit them if planning application is sought. Please send your views and opinions to: yourvillagevoice@minstermatters.org.uk Remember to include your name and address in any correspondence – we will be unable to print comments submitted anonymously.

LONDON MARATHON TEAM My wife Jo and I are running the London Marathon on 13th April to raise funds for the Alzheimer's society. We have lived in the village for the last 15 years. I am a local police inspector and my wife is a school nurse. Sadly my dad died of Alzheimer's (he lived next door to MM team member Nora in Laurensfield). Dementia is a horrible illness which slowly takes your loved ones from you, leaving you feeling helpless. Unlike other life ending illnesses, there are no known cures. Alzheimer's society support families and have a Village Hall Saturday 29th March 2014 11am to 4pm Admission £1 Children Free significant research team. Jo and I have been training for the marathon since last year. We are covering upwards of 40 miles a week in training, many Old Photographs, Documents, Maps, Deeds, in and around Minster and Monkton. The wettest January on Registers and other Family History resources record has not helped us on our way. Dear Editor I would like to say a sincere thank you to both John and Verena Stead for making my 100th birthday so special with their lovely card. Kathleen Ovenden Dear Editor My husband and I have been residents in Minster for the last 30 years and have seen how much Minster has transformed, the good and the bad. But the latest notice of planning application to build 3 single dwellings to house 4 persons with 16 car parking spaces at the Old Car Park near St Mary’s Road has to be Thanet District Councils worst decision to date. The costs involved in turning the Old Car Park into a new development must be considerable and at a time when Council budgets have supposedly been reduced it seems ludicrous that such an application has been passed. The question has to be asked is this the best way to spend the good tax paying people of Minster money? In my opinion the money should be spent on the existing Car Park, increasing parking for local residents and commuters to Minster C of E Primary School, which I would expect might help reduce the traffic congestion that currently envelopes most of Minster during peak periods. I would ask readers to look at the proposed drawings and our objection letter (download from here www.minstermatters.org.uk/docs/stmarysrd.pdf note it is 39 pages long) and decide if they really want the good people of Minster's money paying for a new development that will only house 4 persons, rather than updating the School and or other public facilities within the village. I end with my thanks to you for taking the time to read this objection and hope that the good people of Minster will also raise their objections Yours faithfully, Mrs Sheila Taylor (Local Minster Resident for over 30 years)

SMASH THE FAT Xmas Factor Competition Results! Hi all, We recently finished our latest Body Transformation Contest – The Xmas Factor. Campers had 12 weeks to try to lose 12 centimetres from their waists or hips. The competition ran from the 9th September to the 29th November. We had an amazing incentive for anyone who managed to lose those golden 12cms - they won some Smashing prizes! Each person who managed to lose the 12cm won a Makeover Day with TOWIE star Lydia Bright as well as a £200 dress from her Boutique and a half day Personal Training session with Smash The Fat founder Sam Feltham. In total from the AM Margate and PM Minster Camps we had an amazing 5 winners! Woo Hoo! They all worked really hard over the twelve weeks, rarely missing a session and nailing their nutrition which gave them their awesome results. ● Helen lost 13cm from her waist and 9cm from her hips and also lost 1 stone and 6 pounds! ● Kelly lost 13cm from her waist and 7cm from her hips and lost just over 1 stone in weight! ● Niki lost 16.5cm from her waist and 11.5cm from her hips and lost 1 stone 6 pounds. ● Katie lost 12cm from her waist and 2.5cm from her hips and lost 3 pounds in weight. ● Katy lost 15.5cm from her waist and 10.5cm from her hips and lost exactly 2 stone! I am immensely proud of what all of my campers achieved during the competition. In fact from a percentage point of view just over 50% of my campers actually achieved the target of 12cm lost! Hopefully everyone who reads this takes some inspiration from the pictures. These ladies are ordinary people who lead ordinary lives but decided to make a change to their exercise regime and make a major change to their eating habits. The combination of sweating at Boot Camp and watching what they ate (especially those dreaded carbs!) and their own willpower and determination is what led to each and every one of their successes. Finally I just want to say a massive WELL DONE to Helen, Kelly, Niki, Katie and Katy once again! You all SMASHED IT! Matt Laing

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION On Saturday 8 February we had a visit from a group of our French friends. This visit served a dual purpose: ●Exchange a list of planned events for 2014 ●Attend the Selection Dance for Miss Minster We presented them with a list of events that we are organizing and also village events that they may be interested in attending. This was well received and they showed an interest in quite a few. They explained that elections for the Mayor would be held in March and they would update us with their diary once this was over. We plan to meet again in France soon after that date to finalize all dates. We all went to Archies for lunch and were full to the brim on leaving there! Our visitors were put off visiting a local museum by the torrential rain, so Christine Lynch kindly entertained the French group until the dance commenced. Only she can reveal whether her entertainment was singing, dancing or the provision of a lovely cup of ‘Rosie Lee’!! Helene Deleplace had planned to arrive later in the afternoon to be a judge at the dance, but unfortunately due to the extreme weather conditions, the ferry was bobbing about uncontrollably outside the port of Dover, thus lengthening her journey to 6 hours and her subsequent late arrival at the dance - well, it had actually just ended. Another French member crowned the new Queen, Holly Humphrys along with her Princesses, Ellie Cheeseman and Molly Matthias. He also presented the newly elected girls with gifts from Armbouts-Cappel. We can now confirm that our next event is going to be the Quiz at the Royal British Legion on Saturday 22 March at 7.30pm. Tables of 6-8 people welcome. Please ring Carol 07745 683 466 to book in advance and avoid disappointment. Tickets are £5 per head including a super buffet as always. Anniversary Day will be on Sunday 4 May. Three quotes have been received from local people for the buffet meal catering. Each sounded delicious and all were competitive, but it was unanimously decided that O’Sheas should be hired on this occasion. The entertainment after the meal is to be provided by Minster School Choir, Minster Playhouse, Chris Ransom and a friend, (for musical accompaniment), and the children from Armbouts-Cappel, who will hopefully provide us with a wonderful dancing display like they did in their own village last year. We anticipate that the ATC from Margate will be in attendance for the Parade down to the Old Schools at approximately 11.45am, starting from the New Inn area. Invitations will be sent out imminently. We hope that you have now visited our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/minstertwinning. Our new website will be advertised on there once it is published. Thank you for your support. See you at the quiz. Minster Twinning

Zac’s Musings Well the stress free period didn’t last too long!! Oh No they’ve both been at it this month thanks to the rain we’ve had to contend with, causing flooding through both ours and our neighbours gardens. Thankfully the Parish Council came to our rescue with a goodly supply of sandbags which they even laid for us, thank you very much. Had to learn a bit of mountaineering though to be able to get in and out of the front and back doors, can’t say I like them but at least they’ve eased the panic in our house for now.

LATE NIGHT SHOPPING Another successful evening thanks to the businesses and everyone who turned out for this popular social evening. Our fabulous award winning Minster School Choir started the evening helping Miss Minster and her Court with the switching on of the Christmas Lights before singing some lovely carols. Minster Salvation Army Band gave the village a real Christmas feeling. The Offcumduns provided some fine entertainment with their energetic dancing, fuelled(?) by some warming Mulled Wine kindly provided by John and Vivien Walford, a favourite whilst people were queuing to see Santa in his Wonderful Winter Wonderland Grotto provided by Jack and Margaret Wraith. The profits from the grotto were kindly donated by the Show Committee towards the Christmas Lights Appeal. All of these people give up their time to make our village something special, so a HUGE thank you to you all. Karen Brazil

The Sisters of the Abbey would like to thank all those who have expressed their sympathy and support on the death of our beloved Mother Concordia Scott OSB. She died peacefully on 5 February. The flood of cards and tributes, and the presence of so many at her requiem and funeral showed how much she is loved and how widely she was known. We are especially grateful to the doctors and staff at Minster Surgery - above all Dr Crosfield and the District Nurses’ Team - for their generous help for Mother Concordia and their kindness to all of us which helped us to care for M Concordia here at the Abbey, her home for over 60 years. In these years she touched the lives of so many in our village and far afield through the warmth and joy of her personality, her beautiful art and above all her faith and her prayer. We hope to offer you in a forthcoming issue of Minster Matters a fuller, all-round appreciation of her life and work. We are hoping to fix this by getting some more power boxes erected closer to the tree holders. We also had to purchase some new holders this year which were made especially for us by Triangular Elephant (Monkton) at cost price. This plus the new lights has cost us over £1300 already with more to be spent next year. We would like to thank Minster Parish Council for their donation of £400 and also everyone else who has given donations towards the lights both in the past and more recently. Thanks also to Mick Bedwell for his free labour and help with the electrics. A HUGE thank you to all those who helped with the erecting and taking down of the trees and not forgetting our wonderful ‘Twiddlers’ for dressing them beforehand, these also include ‘The Brotherhood’ who helped on the days and inbetween replacing holders. Always there when needed, last but not least Roger Thompson for his never ending patience sorting the lights to ensure they are working and to Clive Attwell for the continuing use of his premises. Once again this would not happen without the help of all these people.

Peaceful thoughts of a day dreamer. As I walked up the incline of our steep hill, I stopped a while to enjoy the view, passing our cemetery, so peaceful and still. We have such a beautiful Church and Abbey, built in centuries past, unbelievable just how many years these majestic buildings last. We actually walk on history, St. Augustine, it is said baptised his two first converts to Christianity in the dyke at Durlock, near where I reside. The pleasure our village of Minster gives me, I never try to hide. The name of our village, means Church, somehow fits the scene, we are surrounded by countryside, oh! so serene. Homeward bound, along by the Abbey Wall I walked, Karen Brazil & Anne Thomson and to myself I talked. The rain was falling down and the wind blew so strong, NEW VICAR but I had enjoyed myself as I always do, It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of a new vicar to the Benefice walking along. of the Wantsum Group of Churches, Rev. Dr. Richard Braddy. He will be joined by his wife I am so grateful I live in this village, you know the name, Lorna, along with their two children Ollie and Poppy. Richard has been team curate at St. and perhaps reading these lines, Alphege Church, Seasalter, Whitstable and prior to that was a school teacher. We very will bring Minster fame. much look forward to welcoming him and his family at the end of April. His first service at One more thing I must say, I am surrounded by so many friendly people, Minster will be the first Sunday after Easter, 27th April. and every day, We hope that Richard and his family will be made to feel at home here in Minster and will as I take my walks and to folk I talk, quickly become part of our wonderful community. I realise I am very fortunate to live here, and this I would like to make very clear. Yvonne Chapman

Women’s World Day of Prayer Friday 7th March at 2pm St Mary Magdalene, Monkton Speaker; Dr. Lucy Gabriel

We have been approached on several occasions in the past with regard to the number of events that ‘clash’ on both date and time in the village, but up until now we’ve not actively done anything about it. However we’ve been asked about it again just recently and after some initial hesitation, to consider the amount of work involved, we’ve come up with what we believe could be a solution… an online calendar that everyone can add their own events to. The calendar will be viewable by the general public so it could also serve as a “What’s On’ board for village residents. Most people only tell us, here at Minster Matters, about events after they’ve booked the facility and just a few weeks before they are due to happen, but with this calendar events that have been planned and booked for years ahead can be shown, then everyone will be able to see which dates and times would be best for them to book their own events to avoid a clash. Our biggest hurdle though, is going to be getting people to populate the calendar themselves or passing on the information to us as soon as possible so as we can add it for them. To this end we need the full cooperation of all the venues and event organisers in the village – it won’t work without their backing. We need the likes of the Village Hall Committee, Old Schools, Parish Council, Royal British Legion and the Library, all of whom hire out their facilities, to keep us up to date with their bookings diaries, plus we would also like regular input on planned public events at St Mary’s Church, Minster Abbey, the Salvation Army and Minster School. (Not ‘Church Services’ at this time, although we may consider these (and Weddings) as an addition for the future) Then we need village groups, businesses and individuals who organise events to inform us of what they have planned, as soon as possible, to ensure we have every base covered. We also intend to add events from organisations outside of the village, who are using any of our local facilities, as and when we are informed of these. For the next month (up until 31 March) we are offering you the opportunity to ‘play’ with our calendar, adding or removing events, as a trial before we ‘go live’- anything still on the calendar when we close this trial session will be lost, unless you email admin@minstercalendar.co.uk before the closing date and tell us you wish it to remain listed. Access to the calendar is via this link : www.minstercalendar.co.uk For the trial period only the login details are:User: calendar-trial Password: izzywhizzy246 We intend to give those who wish to add their own events their own personal login details when we ‘go live’ – all we need from you is a name, phone number and email address – we will send you a username and password. We realise that all this could be a bit scary for a few of you, so we have produced some, hopefully easy to understand, step by step instructions on how to access the site, add and remove events, change your personal password etc. which you can view and download from here:www.minstercalendar.co.uk/docs/Instructions.pdf So now’s your chance to try this out, tell us if you think it will work, complain bitterly about the extra work it will give you, if you feel you must, or hopefully tell us it’s what Minster has needed for years. We’re open to constructive criticism, email us at admin@minstercalendar.co.uk . We even have a ‘new member of staff’ at MM Towers, who will have the upkeep of the calendar and manning this email address as his main jobs on ‘The Team’, so please don’t let him sit about idly doing nothing!!

We can now sense that those who have large diaries of booked events have swallowed the lumps in their throats and thought “I don’t want to be involved with that, it’s too much work” – well we’re willing to add all the bookings you have at present to save you that onerous task, we just need the details from you in writing including any contact details you may have. Speak to us at Minster Matters if you need our help, we’re even willing to write out our own lists if we can have sight of your diaries.

Mini House Challenge The Mini House Challenge for Term 3 was a Mario Kart competition. The lap times for each house are as follows:

Active Bug

Vikings: 3 mins 10 seconds Saxons: 3 mins 8 seconds Normans: 2 mins 58 seconds And…

Romans: 2 mins 42 seconds A great win for Roman House.

The Year 6 School Council representatives have been collecting data for the KM Active Bug challenge this term. Every Friday morning, the Year 6 councillors go to each class to find out how many children have walked/cycled or scootered to school that day. They then have the task of working out which class has the greatest percentage of green travel that day. The winning class are awarded the “Active Bug” winners for the week. They receive a certificate, trophy and “Jiminy Cricket” toy to keep and display in their class for that week. Our councillors reported, that on Friday 7th February, 92% of our children had been green travellers that day. Well done Minster CEP for being so active.

Thank You to our Prefects in Terms 1-3. A very big thank you and well done to you all. You have been enthusiastic, very helpful and hard-working during the past three terms, often helping out with things at the last moment. We hope you have enjoyed your time as Prefects and have had some fun too. Our new Prefects will take over at the beginning of Term 4.

Norman House Win Again!! Congratulations to Norman House who managed to earn themselves a huge 1,100 house points this term. This is the second term they have won the cup this year.
