EDITORIAL (WARNING! If you don’t like what I write then don’t read on)

Felt I needed to add the bracketed item above as it appears my column offends some who read this magazine - just a pity they write to me anonymously!! Well what a busy month this has been, firstly our dog had to visit the vet which up as a major operation, lots of bandages and stitches - I’m sure he’ll tell you ended Diane himself if you can find his column. Many thanks to George and the staff at Eagle Vets who sorted him out and made him all better for us. He’s getting on a bit now (he was a rescue dog and we’ve had him over 14 years) and we dreaded the worst for a while but the biopsy results came back negative so we all breathed a huge sigh of relief. Nora Hasn’t June been a busy month in the village? Firstly we had the Abbey Patchers Biennial Exhibition in the Church where they had an absolutely fantastic display of quilts, then we had Open Gardens, the Scarecrow Challenge, a Classic Car and Bike Meet, plus the Youth Forum Fun Day - follow that up with the Annual Strawberry Tea Henry at Devil’s Elbow (sadly we’ve learnt this was the last of these at this venue) and it all goes to show what a vibrant and wonderful village we live in, with so many people giving so much of their time, for free, so as others may enjoy the fruits of their labour. You will find reports on most of these in this magazine along with a plethora of pictures from each event - we hope you enjoy them. On a more sombre note; you should have received a copy of the 2015/16 Minster Diane Business Directory with this issue which is produced by members of the Business Association, however it would be remiss of me if I didn’t tell you that their newest fledgling member, Mollies Coffee House, has sadly closed its doors, due to circumstances beyond Mollies control. Molly made a great effort at getting her business Diana off the ground and she was beginning to build a regular clientel but other forces came into play and she found she couldn’t continue in the premises at 79 High St. The notice on the door does however say “This isn’t the end of Mollies” so maybe she will make a reappearance somewhere else, but maybe not in Minster, as suitable properties don’t become available that often in the village. Wherever she goes we, at both Minster Kevin Matters and the Minster Business Association, wish her well and hope she does eventually succeed with her dream. Well if you did read this far then thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP APPOINTMENTS - TRIAL OF NEW SYSTEM Following Patients response to our recent questionnaire, the Practice is currently trialing a new system to help elevate the difficulty for those patients who are unable to obtain an appointment on the day. Although we are pleased with the results so far, we are always aware of the need for continual improvement, and will continue the trial for the next few weeks, and will of course, ensure patients are kept informed. We thank you for your feedback and patience and continue to welcome any comments you may have. SEASONAL WINTER ‘FLU VACCINATIONS Vaccination Clinics will be held at the on the following days, Saturday 26 September and Saturday 17 October between 9.00am and 1.00pm. Appointments are now available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. Eligible and “at risk” patients will receive a reminder on their “Repeat Prescription List” and will be invited to make an appointment on either of those days. If you have any concerns about your eligibility please contact Reception. NEW FACILITY IN THE WAITING ROOM As mentioned in our previous newsletter, we recently purchased a “Weight Management System” which is now installed and located in the waiting room and is available for patients to use freely. It can be used to determine height, weight and BMI (Body Mass Index) and can a useful guide to maintaining a heathy life style. MISSED APPOINTMENTS - A SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT? Fewer patients missed their doctor’s appointment - CHEERS!!! BUT! More missed their nurses appointment - BOO!! Last month: 43 patients DID NOT attend their doctor’s appointment and 60 patients DID NOT attend their nurse’s appointment so that’s still 103 patients wasting valuable appointments and time! So please stop being a time waster - it’s so selfish and unnecessary! DON’T NEED IT? CANCEL IT - by phone, by text or online - IT’S EASY- JUST DO IT! SPRING FAYRE - A BIG THANK YOU Our Annual Spring Fayre was held on 16 May and we would like to thank all those who took part or supported us so generously and helped us raise nearly £300. The winner of the “Bannatyne’s Gift Voucher” was Mrs. S. Prescott of Acol. OUR NEW PROJCT - PATIENT DONATIONS We would like to thank those people who have made such generous donations towards our new project, and especially the family and friends of the late Betty Marner, the total has already reached £600. You can always keep up to date with progress by checking our notice board in the surgery. SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will be closed on the following days: Staff Training - Thursday 23 July; Wednesday 30 September and Thursday 22 October from Midday onwards. Bank Holiday Monday 31 August all day. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 service via the normal surgery number 821 333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111 to receive non urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY! Our “ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR” will be held on Saturday 21 November and following the success of our Spring Fayre many tables have already been reserved, so book yours NOW to avoid disappointment. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in July, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821 200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821 049 or via email to kenself@me.com

Minster Matters

Minster Open Gardens 2015 THANK YOU to everyone who worked so hard on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June to make Minster a village to be proud of. The massive team which worked to get 17 gardens ready, sell maps, supply refreshments and organise parking was amazing. So many visitors commented on the wonderful atmosphere, the tranquillity of the gardens, the knowledge and generosity of the gardeners, the warm welcome they received and the “awesome” Church. Their efforts have raised just over £5000. Thank you to all who visited the gardens and supported this annual event. Obviously the main reason Minster has had an Open Gardens over the last 17 (I think!) years is to raise money to make sure our Parish Church does not fall down. However, from what people tell me, it has always been much more than this. Over the last couple of years I have become more aware of what Open Gardens involves, and have been stunned to find villagers have committed to it year after year. Are they strong-minded Christians who do it for the Church? Some are, but many are people who enjoy being a part of a village event to share with others the talents of its villagers. If you wandered round the gardens this year, I think you would have discovered that it was not just another fund-raiser. The gardeners are justifiably proud of their gardens, but they also spend time, energy and money on making the visitor feel comfortable and welcome. This year, not only did the visitor have a chance to view the gardens, but could entertain all the family with the Scarecrows, Classic Cars and Motorbikes and the Youth Forum Event. Thank you to all the organisers who worked together to make a successful weekend. Thank you too to the businesses who supported Open Gardens: The Bell Inn, The New Inn, The Saddler, The Corner House, The British Legion, Jemima’s Locket, Mollie’s Coffee House, Attwells, Minster Matters, Holiday Inn Minster, Monkton Nature Reserve and Archers Low Nursery Sandwich. Their help was much appreciated. Next year’s Open Gardens will hopefully be on the 11 and 12 June. If you have any helpful (!) suggestions or offers of help do let me know by email (pmhogben@hotmail.co.uk) or through Minster Matters. Please help us make it as successful as this year. Pat Hogben (pictures on page 10)

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Thanet Lions Club will have a stall at the Minster Show, stop by for your FREE bottle. “Message in a Bottle” is a bottle you keep in your fridge. Inside the bottle you keep a note of who to contact in an emergency, any medication you take even details of your pet. The emergency services will see a sticker on the inside of your front door, this alerts them to go to your kitchen, to the fridge and to collect the information about you so they can help.

Recollections about Minster in Wartime Do you, or your relatives and friends, have any stories or pictures about the village during WW2? I am writing a second book about Thanet’s Home Front, especially concentrating on the Volunteer Services, such as the Land Army, A.R.P., Auxiliary Fire Service, Home Guard, W.V.S., First Aid, Civil Defence, the Guides and Scouts, and anyone who helped with such appeals as ‘Digging For Britain’. I will be at the Minster Flower Show this year on a stall, with copies of my book, ‘The Defence of Thanet and East Kent’, and lots of photographs. If you want to call by and chat, I would be pleased to talk, or take your telephone number for a later date. I can, of course call round to you and discuss. If so, please call the following number 01843 825 545 or email stilwellrv@yahoo.co.uk Ron Stilwell

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB All good things come to an end, and this is an end for me, born under the sign of Cancer, I have succumbed. I have had great pleasure informing you of the activities that happen during each month throughout the year. We, the club, try our very best to encourage Minster residents to come and try out our hospitality either as a spectator, or participator in the activities and social events we have on offer. The ladies are doing particularly well in their County and Special Competitions, if they can get to the Area Finals stage it would be nice to see them receive their County Badge in the same season as myself. Currently, in the East Kent League we hold joint first place, whilst in the friendly games we play our successes are greater than our losses. As I am writing this pre my operation I cannot tell you about the Open Day results. I am sure the winners and plate winners will be posted next month for everyone to see. A big thank you to our Sponsor. The club are looking forward to seeing you at the Village Show on 18 July when we will be in the pavilion serving teas, sandwiches and cakes as usual. Thank you for reading my ramblings. G.H. Addendum by Editor: It was with great sadness the Bowls Club told me as I was putting this magazine together that Life Member and former President Dick Stott has passed away this week. Dick was a very good friend and will be truly missed.

RECENT VILLAGE WEDDING Kate and Peter Mockeridge would like to thank everyone who helped to make their wedding so special, including Vicar Richard of St Mary’s, Janet, Heather, the choir, bellringers, family and friends.

THANK YOU On Friday 5 June I got a puncture in my car which stranded me near the top of Tothill St. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the very kind gentleman from Cheney Road who stopped and changed my wheel for me. Very many thanks, Fred Hards

News from the Belfry From the Tower of St. Mary the Virgin in Thanet

Ringing at the tower has run into some problems recently, with both the Tower Captain and our Tutor being hospitalised and unable to climb the tower stairs for a while to come but as is quite typical in the ringing community, experienced ringers have given up their time to fill the gap and assist our band. As with so much in life, learning to ring is a succession of hills to climb, as new skills are learnt, and plateaux between the hills whilst what has been learnt is practised and consolidated. And just as hills have a natural tendency to become longer and steeper as we progress, so our thanks go to those who have stepped in to help us. The ringing of our church bells is a part of our heritage. If you would like to know more about them or learn for yourself, call in on practice night, each Wednesday at 7.30pm and you will be made very welcome, whilst the handbell ringers practice at our Church on Wednesday nights at 6.00pm, Saturday mornings at 10am,and also welcome newcomers who want to give this team-based music a try.

Last month a read through of David Tristram’s new play A Bolt from the Blue was held at The Bell Inn. The attendance was good and there was much laughter as the play was read, everyone agreeing that it is a very funny piece and well worth performing. Auditions were held and the play was cast, although this play has many extra short parts still available for anyone looking for an easy entry into the acting world of amateur drama. Am Dram societies have a reputation for being cliquey and difficult for new people to be accepted, but Minster Playhouse is not like that – we welcome keen new people whether to act or on the technical side, so why not join us? If you are interested, please contact the Playhouse through Niki Kelly on 07852 271 614. Please don’t forget… On Saturday 4 July we shall again be holding our popular Summer Fair for Charity in the gardens of the Bell Inn. We have fun for the whole family, with entertainers, headlined by the local Rock Choir, games, stalls, a bouncy castle, and a hog roast. This year the fair is being run to support Polycystic Kidney Disease research. Make a date in your diary – it runs from 11am to 3pm, in the lovely garden of The Bell Inn, Minster. SCARECROW CHALLENGE What a fantastic response I had to my mad idea of holding a scarecrow challenge. I thought if I was lucky I’d get around a dozen entries but I was amazed to receive 32, albeit one had to drop out at the last moment. So 31 scarecrows were built and exhibited for Open Gardens weekend and the village was inundated with visitors, some just to see the gardens, some for the classic cars, some for the Youth event and even some who came just to see the scarecrows, I was overwhelmed by the remarks I heard from visitors and locals alike. However none of it would have been possible without the backing of so many of the businesses in and around the village, so thank you to everyone who gave so generously when I approached them for prizes. I won’t bore you with a list of names, you all know who you are. In total we gave away 26 prizes to some very worthy winners and I was only disappointed that there were some we were unable to reward as everyone deserved a prize, they were all so fantastic. Thanks also go to my judges for all the work they put into marking and photographing all the entries, then pondering over the maths to decide who had actually won before finally allocating the prizes. My apologies to those I forgot to inform about attending the prize giving, but thanks go to Ken and Fiona at The Bell for allowing us to make the presentations there. Thanks also to my wife who had the unenviable task of deciding the public winners from the numerous forms we had back - she had to collate all the results in a very short while (about 40 minutes to be precise), thanks also to my daughter who came from Faversham especially to help with the judging. A special thank you to the Open Gardens Committee for allowing us to run our event alongside theirs, I think that worked in both our favours so hopefully we can continue to ‘buddy-up’ the 2 events for many years to come. But more than all of those a very very special thank you must go to everyone who got involved and built a scarecrow for the event, some of which I am assured will be on display at the Minster Show in July just in case you were unable to get to see them. I understand there are already participants who are planning and designing for next year, so it looks like it could get very competitive for some. The Open Gardens report elsewhere in this issue says the dates for next year are Sat 11 and Sun 12 June, so get these in your diaries, I look forward to doing it all again then. The main winners were: Mary Poppins at 3 Monkton Rd, The Chef at 24 High St, and The Lollipop Lady at Devil’s Elbow. The public voted the same for positions one and two but they chose Delilah (WI entry) at the Village Hall for3rd place. In the youngsters category Princess Alyssia at 9 Tothill St was our winner with Nora the Nun at 39 High St 2nd and Woody at 48 Durlock a very close 3rd. We have published pictures of some of the entries elsewhere in this issue along with some shots from Open Gardens, Classic Cars, Youth Fun Day, Abbey Patchers Quilt Show and Cynthia’s Strawberry Tea - so lots of colour for you to look at. Our speaker for June was Dee Neligan who spoke about her work with the Oasis Women’s Refuge. This charity was opened in 1994 in Thanet and supports about 20 families a year and at any one time there are 12 women, some with their children, living at the shelter. Dee is an Independent Domestic Services Advisor who provides unbiased advice and support for women and men in the community who are the victims of some form of domestic abuse. This was a very interesting and emotive subject and Sarah, our President, suggested that we may be able to support it at Christmas with ‘shoeboxes’ of donations such as toiletries, toys, books etc. There was the usual business with reminders for members to sign up for the Strawberry Tea, a trip to the Ramsgate Tunnels in July, the Bat and Trap in August and a trip to Tenterden to meet our twinned WI North Tonbridge. A big thank you to all those who came to Minster Open Gardens weekend and voted for the scarecrows. We had Emmeline, the Suffragette, and Delilah, the Calendar Girl and we were very pleased with our third place (public vote) for Delilah! Amnesty Write for Rights Campaign Update! Amazing news! You may remember that in December, at the St Mary’s Christmas Fair, many Minster residents took part in the Amnesty Write for Rights campaign, sending greetings cards to show solidarity from people all over the world to victims of human rights abuses. One of the three prisoners we wrote to was Moses Akatugba, who was sentenced to death when he was only 16 years old, charged with stealing mobile phones. As well as sending him personal messages of hope, some of you also wrote to the Governor of Delta State in Nigeria, asking him to show mercy on Moses and investigate allegations of police beatings to extract confessions. Tens of thousands of people around the world also took part in the campaign through letter-writing, petitions and social media. On 28th May this year the Governor signed Moses’ warrant of release! Moses has sent this message to pass on to all those who took part: “I am overwhelmed. I thank Amnesty International and their activists for the great support that made me a conqueror in this GIRLS WORLD situation. Amnesty International members and activists BEAUTY SALON are my heroes. I want to assure them, that this great effort they have shown to me will not be in vain, by the special Semi Permanent grace of God I will live up to their expectation. I promise Make-Up to be a human rights activist, to fight for others. I am thanking the Governor for his kind gesture and for keeping now available here to his words.” Introductory Price It’s great news and fantastic that Minster played a tiny £219.00 part in this too, showing solidarity with people across the world. It can have a real effect! To find out more 01843 826 308 visit www.amnesty.org.uk/write 70 High Street, Minster www.girlsworldminster.com Will and Gabrielle Wollen

SUMMER IS COMING!!!! Summer is coming! No doubt you will be going on holiday to somewhere warm like Spain, Brazil, Australia, Portugal, Tenerife, Turkey, South Africa or any of the states within it. After the summer, Minster School pupils will be moving up a year, for instance year2 will move to year 3. The children are all very excited. (I hope!) Let’s get ready for summer! With these few steps, you’ll be ready for summer in no time. 1) Book you holiday or activity 2) Go shopping for summer gifts or clothes if you have none that fit 3) If you’re going to the beach, check the weather and plan dates 4) Plan more than one short activity, in case of getting bored 5) Make sure that you aren’t sitting doing nothing 6) If you are having picnics then bring blankets or towels to sit on. by Tomasin Boulding

Manchester United Manchester United are the BEST in the world no one can beat them. Van Percy and Wayne Rooney are the best players in the team because they’ve got the most goals in the whole season and they have got the most football skills. The second best team is Chelsea because they won the Champions League in 2015. Their best player is Cesc Fabregas because he’s good at shooting and scoring goals. by Oliver Brewer

Cyber bullying is never right whether it’s by text, on a video game, what’s app, I message, or any other internet source. Think before you send anything ask yourself one question – how would I like to be on the other end of this message? Most people bully to be popular but let me tell you now there’s nothing cool about being a big bully. There are a lot of poems about cyber bullying one of the most well-known is this one:

Zac’s Musings What a month since I was here last!! As you can see by my pictures I have been incapacitated - had a growth in my shoulder and a cyst that burst - lots of stitches and plenty of love - a special thanks to George for sorting me out, but I think I had them all worried for a while. I’m well on the way to a complete recovery now, although I have been practising typing with my left paw for a while just in case. I heard our Internet thingy broke and he who is supposed to be obeyed was panicking that he wouldn’t be able to get any help to publish this issue, but if you’re reading this then you can see he did manage it eventually with some help from Diane, next door but one, who did a few pages and our neighbour who kindly allowed us use of her wifi signal.

CONTROVERSIAL LIBRARY WINDOWS Following on from the letters and comments published last month, the following are the replies we received. There was one further reply but as it was sent in total anonimity (no name or address) then we have omitted it, as we have always had a policy of not publishing anything from correspondents who do not give us their name/address. The letter was pro the changes but made some uncalled for remarks about my editorials - it’s simple really if you don’t like them then don’t read them !!! Editor, I couldn’t agree more with your remarks and the reader’s letter about the library windows. My idea would be to compromise, eg keep the frosting on the side where the computers and children’s books are to afford privacy but allow plain windows on the other side of the door so that people can see that it is a library. I think probably that the children’s area requires privacy for obvious reasons but why do the librarians need privacy, they are just sitting at a desk? Anyway these are my thoughts. OVER GROWN HEDGES AND SHRUBS We’ve been asked to remind homeowners and tenants that they have a legal responsibility to ensure their hedges and shrubs do not infringe on the public highway or footpaths. (Highways Act 1980 Cutting or felling etc. trees etc. that overhang or are a danger to roads or footpaths. Where a hedge, tree or shrub overhangs a highway or any other road or footpath to which the public has access so as to endanger or obstruct the passage of vehicles or pedestrians, or obstructs or interferes with the view of drivers of vehicles or the light from a public lamp, or overhangs a highway so as to endanger or obstruct the passage of horse-riders, a competent authority may, by notice either to the owner of the hedge, tree or shrub or to the occupier of the land on which it is growing, require him within 14 days from the date of service of the notice so to lop or cut it as to remove the cause of the danger, obstruction or interference. For the purposes of this section the following are competent authorities in our area — in relation to a highway for which a local highway authority are the highway authority, that authority and also, if the highway is situated in a non-metropolitan district, the council of that district; in relation to a road or footpath that is not a highway, the local authority in whose area the road or footpath is situated; and “hedge, tree or shrub” includes vegetation of any description.)

Dear Editor I thought it was just me feeling that the etched glass in the new library made it look like a bar or someplace into which nice people would not venture, not so, I learn from this month’s MM. So, it’s to give privacy to the Librarians and to those in the IT area, indeed. I hate to STRAWBERRY TEA think what might thus now go on when out of the public I would like to thank everybody who supported this gaze. Sounds positively undesirable in such an ancient year’s Strawberry Tea. We all had a brilliant day with parish. Vapours all round! everyone enjoying themselves, the weather was kind to Regards us again and we raised £632 for Minster Salvation Army. A Minster Resident (name and address supplied) An extra special thank you goes to all my lovely loyal helpers (see picture on front cover of this issue) but after Dear Editor, What a surprise at the small mindedness of some 13 years we are making this the last. I have really people, complaining about the film on the Library appreciated all the help you have given me over the window. Is there really nothing more in the years, lots of hard work but much fun as well. Thank you to Roger, Daryl, Alec and Diane who came village to get hot under the collar about? I wonder if the objectors have any life at all, if they have nothing better along to represent the Salvation Army. The strawberries which were absolutely delicious were to do than complain about something that looks smart, professional and affords a bit of privacy to library users, supplied by our local greengrocer - Greens of Minster. Thank you. as opposed to being in a shop window! Cynthia Neville (more pictures on page 27) (Name only supplied, but we do know address)

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION Four representatives from the Twinning Association visited Minster school on Tuesday 2 June to meet up with a group of pupils from Armbouts Cappel and their teachers. The weather if you remember back to that day was horrendously windy and unfortunately the ferry was kept waiting outside Dover harbour, thus shortening the visit by a couple of hours. However we sat down to a school lunch, which was much improved since our days of school dinners. In the afternoon, some creative tasks were set for everyone to try - art straws and Blu-tack being the only materials we were allowed. Integration between the two schools was evident after a short while. The four of us joined in the exercise and were really excited about the church we built. However, needless to say the constructions by the pupils was far superior! Well we tried. We have recently been advertising the Anniversary trip to France and almost have a full coach to go and join in the day they have organised. A report will follow next month. As mentioned in the last issue, we hope to see you at the Flower Show on Saturday 18 July where we will be having a couple of stalls. Also in attendance on that day will be a new friend of ours, a 16ft lady (non-ferocious), who will be appearing in the Giants Parade that we are holding on Sunday 6 September. Full details of this will be included in the next issue of Minster Matters and at the Flower Show. In the meantime, we are looking for stall holders to book pitches or stalls for our September event. Further details can be obtained from Malcolm Bubb on 01843 447 706. It promises to be a good day overall, so why not be a part of it. A team from Twinning was been entered for the Bowls Club Open Day on Sunday 21 June, we’ll tell you next month how we got on. Thank you for your continued support.

Confirmations at On Tuesday 23 June we welcomed Bishop Trevor to St Mary's who led a service of Baptism and Confirmation. We rejoiced together with the following who were confirmed: Katrina Setterfield, Roy Pye, Marian Divers and Philip Rudd (who was also Baptised); and Abigail Randall who was received into the Church of England.
