Minster Matters

Welcome to Summer, not that it felt much like it when I was writing this, in fact it was blowing a gale and very overcast, traffic was stacked up both in and around the village trying Ray to get to the Airshow. My reporting team actually gave up trying to get out of the village and returned to see what pictures they could get from the Rec. If we managed to shoot any they’ll Amy be on the centre pages of this issue. 61, High St Now some good news, I have at long last got Minster my left wrist operation done, although it has Tel: been far more painful post op than the right one ever was. When they did my right wrist they took Brenda the bone graft from my hip which made it quite sore when walking for a few weeks, however this time they’ve removed bones from my left wrist and used material from them to form the graft. I can tell you it has been extremely painful, in Diane fact on the mythical scale of 1 to 10 I’d put it close to a 9+, it was excruciating and I had to get an appointment at the surgery to obtain some much stronger painkillers which thankfully did bring the pain down to a level where I was able to cope with it. Let’s hope it’s all been Nora worth it and that it eventually heals to be as good as the first one, which isn’t painful at all now. Time will tell as they say. Colin, Henry and John who came onboard to help with the editing and layout of the magazine are getting on well with their training, I am told, and it may be we’ll let one of them loose to try their hand at the real thing next month, so watch this space!! I’ve no doubt some of you have picked me out from the group of misfits on the front cover. No not those in their onesies, they were doing a sponsored walk, see page 12 for details, but the mottley crew in the other picture that are all wearing strange headgear. The picture was taken at Dungeness Power Station where I went on a visit courtesy of Heart Radio. They held a competition for listeners to go on a ‘School Trip’ with presenters James and Charlie. You can see further pictures at and another on page 21 of this issue. James had to have special permission to take the camera in and even then he had to check with our Guides, each time, before actually taking any shots. What a good day we had, Buzzlines transported us there and back, we had coffee and cake on arrival, followed by a very intense security check before we were allowed into the Station for our tour. Believe me we needed those ear defenders, in places the noise was terrific!! They told us there were over 500 staff on duty that day, we saw about 6, what we did see however was lots and lots of CNC Police complete with guns patrolling the whole site. Safety and Security are really paramount there and rightly so. Following the tour we were taken back to the reception area where we were treated to a real slap up lunch and the usual ‘school questionnaire’ to see what we’d learnt. I think I came bottom of the class but it was all good fun, then it was back on the bus for the return trip to Whitstable to the studio. A really good day out and it took my mind off the operation I was lined up for the following day. So thank you, James, Charlie and Matt for a great day out, I’d recommend the Power Station tour to anyone if you get the opportunity. Well it’s Minster Show time again in little under a month so don’t forget to come along for the afternoon and support your village, the weather will be glorious (Karen says so!!). Oh and have you got your tickets for the evening Attwells would like to thank dance? Available from Attwells or Envy at just £5 each. everyone who brought their Well that’s another issue written up, Sainsbury's Vouchers into the done and dusted, where does the time shop. We were able to give go? Just room to ask the usual question: Minster Nursery just over 2000 “Where’s Zac?” vouchers. Great Effort.

ANNUAL SPRING FAYRE A BIG THANK YOU to all those who kindly supported us on Saturday 18th May, despite a power cut throughout the morning (thanks to vandalism of the overhead power network!). The event was a tremendous success and helped us towards achieving our target. SO A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - SATURDAY 16th DECEMBER ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR! Table bookings are now being taken - and some are already reserved - so get in quick!. THE LATE MR BRIAN ATKINSON We would like to thank his family and friends for their kind and generous donations made to the group in his memory. In consultation with the Practice Partners, we will consider the best way to utilise these donations in order to maintain their wishes and the memory of Mr. Atkinson. WHY ARE YOU STILL A TIME WASTER? Last month 81 Patients failed to attend for their Doctor’s appointment (An increase on the previous month!). Last month 33 Patients failed to attend for their Nurse’s appointment. THAT’S A TOTAL OF 114 OTHER PATIENTS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN SEEN! Do you like the idea that, of a Doctor sitting there doing nothing for nearly two days every month - I doubt it! It affects other Patients and their ability to make an appointment. A record of these appointments is now being kept and we will consider any action that may be necessary to help reduce this problem. SO PLEASE STOP WASTING TIME AND MONEY! DON’T NEED IT? CANCEL IT!. HOLIDAY TIME! Summer Holidays (If we ever have any summer!) Will be soon upon us, but as well as the sun cream and swimming costumes, a couple of other things you might like to consider:1. Repeat Prescriptions - order in good time to ensure you have sufficient medication. If you need to order in advance of the due date, just add a note on your “Repeat Request Form”. 2. Annual Review - If it is due shortly, remember to allow sufficient time to make an appointment beforehand. Please remember that the surgery staff has holidays as well, so ensure you book early. Thank you for your help and co-operation. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like us to raise at any of our meetings, or you require further information on any of the above, then please contact either: Ken Self on 821200 or Jean Lawrence on 821049.

MINSTER'S YOUNGEST RINGER COMPLETES LEVEL ONE Oliver Daw 12, is Minster's youngest ringer. On June 19th 2013 Oliver was presented with his Level One Bell Handling Certificate by Tower Captain Sheila Palmer with proud Mum looking on. If a 12 year old can ring our bells anyone can!!! BELL RESTORATION FUND - MINSTER IN THANET The sound of bells ringing is deeply rooted in British culture. Almost everyone in Britain lives within hearing range of bells. They provide the grand soundtrack to our historic moments, call out for our celebrations and toll sadly in empathy with our grief. The bitter-sweet sound of just one bell or the majesty of a whole peal has become part of the English heritage and much of the country’s history can be traced through the history of its bells. They call us to wake, to pray, to work, to arms, to feast and, in times of crisis, to come together. Above all, bells are the sound of freedom and peace as in World War 11 they hung silently until the day they could ring in the peace. Bells can be likened to the human body, when they are young and new, everything works fine, and the body, like the bells gets taken for granted. But when the body gets a lot older things start to pack up or malfunction just like the bells. So we have to get first aid to sort the body out. Old age takes its toll (pardon the pun) on the bells and parts of the installation are in need of first aid, which they have received. We are now getting to the stage where they, like the body need major surgery to keep them going and most of all in a safe condition, without major surgery they will become un ring able and the tradition that dates back over 400 years will not be around for future generations to enjoy. ‘Surgery’ on St Mary’s bells must be done by professional people, and like private surgery this doesn’t come cheap. We need £50,000 (this includes VAT) to do the work, we have raised £8,000 in the form of grants but still need £42,000. Any donations would be gratefully received so the work can be carried out and the bells be enjoyed for generations to come.

After seven years of being officially opened the first wedding took place at Minster Salvation Army! Chris Bolton, whose family once lived in the village, married Georgina Clancy of Adisham on 25th May 2013. Some villagers who remembered the Bolton family attended the service and were able to chat to family members about their memories. The service also featured a piano and cello duet by nieces and a Trumpet Voluntary for the wedding party to process to by a Salvationist friend Andy Millest from Gillingham Corps. The Reception was also held at the Hall. Another picture of the happy couple on front cover

LOCAL SCOUTS SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE 1st Minster Scouts took part in a sponsored cycle ride on Sat 27th April to raise some much needed funds for the next years activities. 12 Scouts, leaders and some fit parents and siblings cycled 25 miles along The Viking Coast trail from Minnis Bay to Minster. At present they have raised around £500.00 and gained their cyclist badge. They were extremely well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I think in this day and age they deserve a mention. Thanks, Karen Whybrow (Leader 1st Minster Scouts)

The Operations Committee of Minster Parish Council is setting up a working group to put together proposals for a new play area, possibly a Multi-Use Games Area and outdoor gym equipment to be sited on the Open Space land the Parish Council is about to take ownership of next to the Heronsbrook site. This group would also carry out a feasibility study on the skate-park and will make recommendations on any improvements that may need to be carried out to it. The Committee is seeking volunteers from the Village to sit on this working group and would like users, and future users of the facilities, to be part of the group to ensure that the equipment and any improvements identified reflect the needs of users. Ideally the group will include teenagers, skateboarders and parents of 0 to 16 year olds. Will any persons interested in being part of this working group please contact Kyla Lamb, Clerk, Minster Parish Council on 821339 or by letter to 4a Monkton Road, Minster CT12 4EA by 19 July 2013.

In the absence of the President, Vice President, Sarah Eaton-Brown, opened June's meeting welcoming members and guests before leading the singing of Jerusalem. After reminders about the Minutes of the May meeting and the Treasurer's report being on the Notice Board table, Marion Bullard introduced Janet Bryant and her talk entitled ‘Making Pot-pourri'. What followed was a fascinating demonstration of this ancient craft from an expert horticulturist who made the procedure so interesting that everyone became keen to make their own! Sarah was delighted to report the making of a profit at the Calendar Girls afternoon ‘tea party’, thanking everyone who helped with loaned tea sets etc. The Garden Morning & Treasure Hunt was also a success (thanks to Ann Wilks and helpers) and will be held again in the future. The Sunshine Club will be going to Mount Ephraim on 26 July. Sarah drew members' attention to the need for volunteers to dress up etc for our WI's Minster Flower Show float and for home-baked contributions for the stall. The other Vice President, Cathy Hoenes, read the correspondence and then joined other members 'advertising' various events and causes. Following approval of last month's Minutes, the Raffle and Sarah's reminder about next month's speaker being Matthew Collins with his highly recommended ‘Shakespeare to Supermarkets’ talk, the meeting came to an end at 9.15 pm. GAMES EVENING: 24th July 7.30-10.00pm in Committee Room NEXT MEETING: 9th July 7.30 pm, Village Hall All welcome

JACK’S BORNEO TRIP - fundraising update. On Sunday 9th June, 12 of us (made up of our family and friends) set off from Minster Church and enjoyed a cold and windy walk to Sandwich and back again, dressed in our Onesies!! It took us around 5 hours (including a short stop for chips along Sandwich Quay). After adding up all our sponsors, we have raised around £700!! We are nearly half way to raising the funds needed for Jack to spend a month in Borneo next year doing conservation work and helping a rural community out there. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who did the sponsored walk and to everyone who kindly sponsored them and also a massive thank you to Karen in Attwells who raised £250!! and to the generous people who sponsored her (she was due to do the walk with us but due to an injury couldn’t, so Harrison, that’s Jacks little brother, did the walk on her behalf). We have also had very generous donations posted through our door and handed in to Attwells. So Thank You to everyone for your support, without peoples generosity this would not be possible. Hi Ray - Thank you so much for coming on Saturday and opening our very first “Its a Knockout Event” along with the Mayor of Ramsgate. It was wonderful to see everyone having such a fabulous day full of fun and laughter with crazy costumes and funky mascots. We are really proud to announce that the event raised £4,410. We also received fantastic feedback from the teams and their supporters. We hope to put on a similar event next year. Best wishes Diane.

Minster Matters Recipes Needed for Minster Village Cookbook!

We would like to produce a cookbook with recipes and accompanying photographs from the villagers of Minster. We are looking for all your favourite recipes. These may have been passed down through the generations or just found in the latest magazines. Maybe you have tried something from a TV chef or invented your own delicious dish. If you have anything you would like to share we would be glad to hear from you. The idea is that once all recipes have been gathered we would choose a selection to enter in the book and those chosen would be asked to prepare their recipe for a ‘taster evening’ on late night shopping night at the Old Schools when we would hope to launch the book. We think this would be a fun way for all to raise funds for much needed repairs to our beautiful Parish church. If you think you would like to be included and have your name in a published book please send a copy of your recipe, with your name and contact details, along with a photograph if you have one of your dish to, or drop it in at the Old Schools in the box marked Village Recipes. THE CLOSING DATE IS 31ST JULY 2013

Your Letters… LACK OF DROPPED KERBS IN PETTS CRESCENT The rest of the village seems to have an ample supply of dropped kerbs, however this road has none. In a village in which a large proportion of the population is elderly, this seems problematic. A lack of dropped kerbs can create difficulty in the elderly or disabled leaving their homes and in some cases can lead to social isolation. I know of at least one member of the village who is unable to leave his home unaided due to their inability to step off of the pavement. Moreover, a study by I’DGO indicated that 77% of the elderly participants prefer dropped kerbs to normal kerbs and only 40% felt comfortable using a normal kerb, thus it would be ideal if a dropped kerb could be provided in this area in order to accommodate for those who are unable/struggle to use a normal one. Thank you for your consideration. (Name and email address supplied)

Thank yous… Bonnie and Julie would like to say a huge thank-you… for all the support we have received on the opening of the MAD HATTERS TEA SHOP. We are overwhelmed with how much of a success it has become, this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for all of our loyal customers and I must add that it has also been lovely to meet some new faces! Once again, a huge thank you to the village for supporting us and to Steve and Nikki (Saddler Landlord & Lady) without them we wouldn’t be here. Let’s keep it as the local community hub! Thanks again to you all. - Mad Hatters. Jean Perks would like to thank… family, friends and neighbours for attending Tom’s funeral on Tuesday 21st May. Also thanks for the cards, kind messages of sympathy and donations to Dementia UK and to Jonathon Cole Funeral Directors. Due to an error by the local paper the acknowledgement of Tom’s funeral did not appear prior to the funeral actually taking place. They have apologised but this may have meant that some people may not have known. If this has happened then please accept our apologies. Jean
