BREAKING NEWS There are two items of late news 1/ The village grapevine tells us that KCC Officers have recommended to their Councillors that the Order for Yellow Lines in the village be abandoned. 2/ The accident in Monkton Road that we reported on in our March issue has just been concluded and this is the report that Kent Police have sent us: A 23-year-old Essex man, Robert Christopher Mullane, of Miltstin Avenue, Canvey Island, has pleaded guilty to drink driving on the evening of 14 February. Police were called after he drove his Seat Leon through the village, damaging a number of other vehicles. He required hospital treatment for minor injuries. No one else was hurt. Oliver Rochford - 10 He has been disqualified from driving for 18 months, fined £325 and ordered to pay £85 costs COLOURFUL VILLAGE WEDDING 150 guests packed St Mary’s Church on 5th June to witness the marriage of Anna-Nadia Tweed, granddaughter of village residents John and Viv Walford, to John Onions. The choir sang Ave Maria to rapturous applause. The entire congregation formed a parade headed by 2 classic Jaguars from the church to the Old Oak Cottage where the reception was held in the gardens. The brides dress was 70yrs old and the Wedding Buffet of Cream Teas was supplied by village caterer, Jackie Cooper.

OPEN GARDENS 19th/20th JUNE In a bid to gain some much needed publicity, as we were competing with the likes of the Big Event in Margate, our very flamboyant hairdresser Michael and Bob Coles the Vicar dreamt up the idea, of having our now world famous peacock, Ed, do the honours and officially open ‘Minster Open Gardens’ this year. Here you can see him, with a whole host of his admirers, about to ‘peck the ribbon’. Although the weather was somewhat against us, it was good to see, so many, people turn out for the event. More pic’s on page 15 RBL WOMEN’S SECTION Congratulations to the Minster’s Ladies for all the efforts that must have gone into winning so many accolades this year, See page 6 for further details. Minster Matters 3 July 2010 The ‘E’ Team EDITORIAL I’ve been racking my brains ( no sly comments - please) as to what to write here this month as I’m at a loss as to what to say. I could tell you about my problems with the NHS and my still awaited Op, but you’re all probably fed up to the back teeth Ray hearing about my health problems. (Minster Window Company) So what can I tell you that might capture your imagination? Property Maintenance How about the yellow lines. It looks like we may not be blighted Building Work by them after all, if so then thank you to all those who have put Plastering * Rendering so much effort into getting them stopped, I hope the Councillors Amy take their officers recommendations on board and your efforts uPVC Windows & Doors reach the conclusion you have fought so hard for. uPVC Fascia, Soffits & Guttering The past month has seen new owners in The Bell, so let’s Repairs to existing double glazing hope they can continue to provide the friendly hospitality of the Misted up sealed units replaced Brenda previous owners. The new owner tells me he will be writing a Garage Doors * Decking short introduction to his family and their business ideas in a future issue. For now let us just wish them well in their new venture and we hope residents will give them their continued Call on support. Eve I heard a rumour that Archies had been sold, but after visiting the premises and speaking to both Sal and Tulin I was assured this wasn’t the case, or if it was, then Tulin asked, how much did it go for and where’s the cheque? Elsewhere in this issue you should find a short column of Diane apologies which have built up over the past couple of months that I keep forgetting to make, so if I’ve left anyone off now, then I am truly sorry and I apologise for forgetting you. Did you see on the front page our ‘Worlds First’ having a by celebrity like Ed agree to do us the honour of opening last Nora weekend’s village event. Sadly he was unable to ‘strut his stuff’ as he is confined to barracks at present, and couldn’t be allowed to run loose to make a spectacle of himself, which is why 73 High Street, Michael kindly lifted him up to ribbon height, so he could Minster, Ramsgate Sue officially declare the gardens open. No news yet as to when we are likely to see the ‘unneeded’ kebab shop 01843 821216 opening, but it is rumoured that they may be considering home deliveries, as the plans show a large bike shed out the back, so we could be inflicted with Carpet those awful buzzing scooters tearing around the village anytime soon. Specialists Don’t forget it is ‘The Big Lunch’ on Sunday 18th July, have you got your neighbours organised yet. Have you told us where there are any Carpets lunches taking place ? We’d love to know so we can come and get some 39, Station Road, Vinyl's piccies. I’ve even read on Freegle that someone local has been collecting Birchington tables and chairs for their event. Who & where are you - don’t be shy? Tel: 01843 845085 Rugs Just space to say, my op is planned for 6th July(maybe!) PATIENT LIAISON GROUP (MINSTER) NEWSLETTER - JUNE/JULY 2010 Apology Firstly, apologies to our Minster residents who unfortunately did not have our newsletter printed in the June issue of Minster Matters. This was due to a "technical problem". Gremlins in the network I expect!! Monkton and Acol residents will be pleased to know that they were not affected.

Appointments/Missed Appointments It is appreciated that some patients are experiencing difficulties when trying to make or get appointments, which is something that the surgery is trying to address. However, we would like to draw to your attention that the number of "MISSED APPOINTMENTS" still remain unacceptably "HIGH", and continue to cause concern and inconvenience to Patients and The Practice alike. Each month, between 75 to 85 patients fail to attend appointments previously made. That's 3 - 4 PER DAY or 15 - 20 APPOINTMENTS PER WEEK that could be offered to others whose need could be more urgent. So please, PLEASE (AGAIN)! If you find that you no longer require an appointment or cannot attend, please let the surgery know and CANCEL IT! That way it could help others whose need may be more urgent, and perhaps one day that COULD BE YOU! THANK YOU. Hospital Transport Schemes Should patients require transport to/from local hospitals for appointments or treatment etc there are two schemes that are currently available and they are : 1. Voluntary Transport Scheme.....Contact 590935 2. Thanet Volunteer Service ........ .Contact 597115 Surgery Training Day Please note that the surgery will be closed on Tuesday 14th September from 12.00 pm Should you need to see a doctor during this time then please contact the "Doctors on call Service" via the normal surgery number which is 821333. Patient Group Meeting The date of July's meeting has not yet been decided. However, if anyone has any suggestions or issues they would like to be raised at our meetings please contact either of the numbers shown below or via the Practice Manager on 821333. For this , or for any other information contact : Jean Taylor on 845072 or Ken Self on 821200

July 2010 Steve Taylor, KCC Community Warden As we move into what is supposed to be summer and, at the time of writing, England are still in the World Cup there is reason to be cheerful. I’m pleased to be able to report that Minster isn’t suffering any major problems right now, unless you know different!!! The new housing development is coming on nicely and quite a few of the properties are now occupied and I would like to extend my own warm welcome to anyone who has recently moved into Minster and to say how lucky you are coming to such a great village. As usual at this time of year there are quite a few events taking place in the village, starting with the Open Gardens’ days quickly followed by the annual Minster Bowls Club Charity event which unfortunately this year my warden team is unable to attend due to illness and holidays. Never mind we’ll be back next year to give the others a run for their money. Then of course we have Minster Flower Show on Saturday 24th July which is always a great day out. So make sure you pop that date into your diary and do your best to attend as many of these events as you can and support these traditional occasions as the organisers put a lot of hard work in to make them a success. Not much else to report this month but as always I’ll ask you all to be vigilant and look after anyone you feel might be vulnerable and let me know if there is anything you think I can help you with. Take Care and have a great summer!

LAST REMINDER - RE: HAITI VESTS Please could you let me have them by July 5th so I can pack and get them delivered before the end of July. So far you lovely ladies have knitted: 335 Vest 20 Other Cardigans 14 Blankets 1 Large Bag Hats, Scarfs, Mittens and Booties Well done everyone! Final update next month,

REMINDER TO MOTORISTS TO ‘MIND YOUR MANNERS’ Just a polite reminder to motorists that Minster, although forever expanding in residential numbers, still relies on the original network of roads from years gone by. Unable to cope with the increasing volume of traffic there ARE going to be times when congestion builds up and drivers become frustrated with ‘giving way’. But one quick raise of the hand, nod of the head, polite acknowledgement to say ‘thank you’, to the driver who has been courteous enough to let you through should NOT go amiss. In a world where we seem to be ‘chasing our tail’ let’s try to remember to take time to recognise acts of kindness from others, wherever we may be. From Co-Editor who occasionally comes across those who forget.

July 2010 LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS LONDIS UPDATE Ben wishes to inform his customers that due to the extensions at the shop, to complete the internal fittings, it is necessary to close the business for one week commencing from close of trade on Sunday 11th July right through to the morning of Tuesday 19th when the store will re-open. Ben would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but he feels the premises will be a great improvement and well worth the wait! Have you seen the Minster Muppets? Well we’re told they hang out quite regularly at the Gossip Shop, if of course they actually remember to turn up, they are usually to be found wearing silly hats and making strange signs to each other. Thing you could hit in ? Then see Danny Day at the Corner Seat in the Gossip Shop for details of how to join. They really do need to swell their numbers !!

Humble Pie Corner Editor’s belated apologies: I wish to apologise to Katie and Simon for the ‘shew as’ rather than ‘she was’ in the text relating to their mum on front page of the May issue, I’d also like to apologise to Danny Day for the terrible mess my OCR software made of his article on the Royal Observer Corps and also for omitting to credit him with the article. I must admit I was extremely late in finishing the magazine ready for the printers and as such I omitted to proof read any of it before sending it off, something I would never normally do, but with my pending Op (which got cancelled after we went to print !!) I got into a right pickle late Sunday evening and I had to send it in its raw state, I don’t intend to do that again though, so please accept my apologies for the below standard issue. My apology for June goes to Anjelica Sefton, Carnival Princess, for wrongly spelling her name TWICE !! Playhouse Tickets We were disappointed in the small number of entries we received for the free tickets to see the play, especially as their performances are always so well supported and usually a sell out, so it seems rather strange that so few people were willing to put pen to paper and try to win two free seats. That being said I must congratulate our winners Sarah Eaton-Brown and Karen Brazil, both worthy winners who do a great deal for the village, I am sure you will agree. Ray, Editor

July 2010 MINSTER-IN-THANET WI

At June's meeting we had an informative and fact-filled talk by Mrs Anne Hill on the work of the Royal British Legion. One fact which surprised us was the cost - £1,000 - of a pitch at the Kent Show, which meant that the Legion could not attend, and our Secretary explained that this prohibitive cost was why there is also no longer a WI presence at the Show. Dressed in 'best bib and tucker', several members took part in an outing to Ladies Day at Folkestone Races, where they saw top jockeys, including Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon, race: fortunately, no-one lost her shirt at the bookies! A chill wind and cloudy sky did not detract from our Garden Morning in Ann and Don Wilks' lovely garden, when they kindly opened it again this year. As well as plants for sale, there were stalls selling bric-a-brac, books, CDs, DVDs, soft toys - and, of course, the ever-popular cake stall. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 13th July at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, when Terry McCormick will present the Police Road Show. New members and visitors will be made welcome. Don't forget to look out for our 'home cooking' stall at Minster Flower Show on 24th July. At last year's show we sold out, so shop early!

July 2010 Your Letters ...... I've recently heard stories from a grandparent and two mums of small children being frightened by dogs in the recreation ground which were not on leads. From my own observations, most owners are able to control their dogs without leads, but perhaps owners of more excitable dogs could consider their effect on young children. The problem has been that these dogs have not only been free to approach the children, they've also jumped up at them and, in the case of one 5 year old, the dog was actually growling at her (although it was on a lead in that case - but still not under control). No problem with dogs running free in the rec, just if owners could make sure they can keep them away from small children if they can't be trusted not to approach them. It must be quite scary to have a big dog bouncing round you if you're only 3ft high! However, I understand this might be difficult to write up in your column as the rec is open to everyone and you have to be fair, I just think it's a shame if children become frightened of animals when it's avoidable. Ruth To the Editor - It is right that you should support the Traffic Warden to criticise dog owners for not cleaning up after their dogs. However, why are you not more vociferous about far more mess being left by humans. E. Stopes Reply from the Editor - “Firstly may I just say the Community Warden was none too pleased to be called a Traffic Warden. However in reply to this letter, I understand that the village is not quite as clean and tidy as we might wish it to be, but we must remember that due to the recent sad death of David Harlow we do not have a road sweeper at present, and personally speaking I would much rather stand on 20 empty crisp packets then 1 piece of dogs mess.”

Minster Bowls Club. IF ONLY, the two words said, or thought by members playing in competitions during the past few weeks. At the Ash Bowls Club open day competition, Pam Wooldridge lost by the 1 point to a Lady from Victoria Park B C. So if only she could have got that point, an extra end would have had to be played. Bad luck Pam. Results from our teams, the Premier League team have wins in number one behind the losses. In the mixed matches we have played 21 games giving us 10 wins, 7 losses, 2 cancelled by our opponents, and one rained off. In the East Kent League against Canterbury, Herne Bay, Ashford Town and Faversham, we are top of the table with a 5 point advantage over the second team. The Devon Tourists really enjoyed their trip to our club. As per the photo, the weather was warm and sunny. The foreground shows the Devon Boys in action, with Captain Ken’s rink on the left of the photo. Glynne.

July 2010 Success for Minster Playhouse, at Kent Drama Association Award Ceremony. This year’s production by Minster Playhouse “Ghost Writer” (which many of you will have seen,) has won The Best Technical Achievement Award at this year’s Full Length Play Festival. A group of us travelled to Benenden near Tenterden on Saturday to cheer on our team. Congratulations go out to the whole team for this excellent achievement. The Playhouse were also runners up in the following categories: Best Supporting Actor, Best Set Design, and Best Stage Presence. There were a number of special mentions for our team with Music, Lighting, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress all being picked out by the adjudicator as extra special and only just missing out on the nominations. This was a hard fought competition and The Playhouse were up against fifteen other groups from all over Kent some who have actual theatres in which to work in, with a much larger catchment area and better resources. The standard was extremely high, over all, compared to previous years because the quality of amateur theatre is getting much better throughout the UK. A big thank you to all who supported us, before, during and after this production, and we hope for your continued support in the future. For those of you who have not yet attended one of our productions may I suggest you keep an eye on Minster Matters for future productions in Minster with our annual Pantomime “ALLADIN” in December. Remembering 1940 and Percy Powell-Cotton This year the country has been remembering the events of 1940 - the Dunkirk evacuation and the Blitz among them. At the Powell-Cotton Museum it is a significant anniversary too. It is 70 years since the death of the Museum founder - Percy Powell-Cotton. He died in the Cottage Hospital at Midhurst in Sussex while on a visit to his sister nearby. He had been ill for a number of months and had gone to Sussex in the hope of recuperation. The story of the Major’s life and work is on permanent display in the entrance corridor to the museum. It had been a worrying time at Quex. The problems and experience of wartime were familiar to Major and Mr. Powell-Cotton as the house and museum had served during the Great War as a hospital. However, in 1940 the dangers were greater, with the threat of a big air war as well as the possibility of invasion. The last few weeks of Major Powell-Cotton’s life were beset by these concerns and the very real possibility that his life’s work would be destroyed. In addition, his only son Christopher had joined The Buffs (the East Kent Regiment) and was likely to see active service. The story of those dark days under the shadow of enemy attack are recalled in a small exhibition at the Museum. The Forgotten Frontline, by local historian and archaeologist Mark Harrison, together with a selection of artefacts from the Powell-Cotton collection, shows how the nation braced itself for the likelihood of a Nazi invasion. The exhibition will run until the end of August. New road scheme brings exciting results Bronze and Iron Age evidence found. Apart from clouds of chalk dust, the East Kent Access road scheme has thrown up evidence of extensive activity including an iron age settlement and bronze age burial mounds. The huge excavation site has been the subject of much local interest, to both professional and amateur archaeologists. Members of the public had a chance to discover details of all the latest results on Wednesday 16th June at Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex Park, Birchington, when Simon Mason, Principal Archaeological Officer, KCC, and Phil Andrews, Site Director, Oxford Venture Archaeology, gave a public talk.

We had 1 week of fantastic activities and at the end we had a challenge to see what we had learnt. The activities we did were: Archery, Swimming, The Witches Tree, Rock Climbing, Obstacles, Forest Adventure, Pond Dipping, Orienteering, Map Reading and lots more. I had a great time and in my bedroom was Rosie, Jessica, Danielle, Jenny and me. I would love to go to Hindleap again it was the best school trip ever!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FRUIT TUCK SHOP Fruit tuck shop is a amazing improved stall that sells fruit for every one who wants it. Each piece of fruit is an amazing 15p. The stall has had great reviews from nearly every person who buys fruit. Fruit tuck shop is a great way for people to become more healthier by eating more fruit, as when it was before school nobody really wanted it much. The people who run the fruit tuck shop are always happy to do it .If you would like to buy some fruit from this lovely stall then go onto the active playground whilst first break is on By Kathryn Goldfinch

SANDWICH TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL In September we are going to Sandwich Technology School. We all found out which school we are going to on Monday 1st March 2010. We are so happy that we are going to Sandwich because our friends are going there. At Sandwich there are loads of teachers and there are loads of clubs. There are lots of different subjects at Sandwich which are: Freedom, Communications, Creative and DT, Performing Arts, Hair and Beauty, Humanities, ICT, Business Studies, Intervention Group, Mathematics, P.E, Health and Leisure, Science and Technology. By Emma Holland and Rosie Malloy

CATHY CASSIDY Cathy Cassidy is another successful writer (one of my other favourites) who has just written her new books: Gingersnaps, Dreams and Doodles day book, Angel Cake, Letters to Cathy and Love, Peace and Chocolate, but one of her books that I particularly like is Scarlet. Her first ever book is called Dizzy which I’m reading right now! If you want a fabulous book of your own buy one at W.H. Smith or Waterstones. By Rosie Malloy SCHOOL DINNERS School dinners are really good because it gives you lots of options about what to eat. The deserts consist of fruit and nice things like chocolate cake, flapjacks and allsorts. There is a salad section where you can ask for a side-salad or sweet corn/peas. You get roast dinners, chicken chow mien, pasta, shepherds pie and lots more! By Olivia Brewer

DOUBLE ACT This week I’m doing a review on Jacqueline Wilson’s best selling children’s book Double Act which is about some twins called Ruby and Garnet, where these two twins tell the story in different ways. Ruby is the show off who wants to be a star when she’s older and Garnet is the shy one who likes writing and drawing. Tune in next week for some gossip on Miley Cyrus!!!!!!!!

WORLD CUP DAY On the 10th of June 2010 it was World Cup Day! Every class got a country to learn about. Orange Class got Italy. We learned about Italy and the Italian Football Team. We got sheets to colour in and WORLD CUP sheets to write on. One of the Sheets was to create a football team, The world cup has just started and everyone is excited this year my team were called Team Lightning. At the end of a long day we anyone can win and some teams may surprise us in the groups had an assembly about the things we had learnt about. and hopefully England can By Emma Holland By Nathan Munday
