MINSTER SHOW Next Committee Meeting: Friday 13 February 7.30pm @ The Bell Inn (New members always welcome) The Committee is still actively looking for volunteer photographers for the 2015 Show - Good with a camera? Please, let us know - you’ll even be entitled to free entry on the day!! Minster Show date, Saturday 18 July 2015, make a note on your calendar. Not got a calendar? Attwell’s have a range on sale, so you can still get organised. The Show Theme this year is ‘Minster Village’ so the photography sections will obviously have a Minster focus - more details to follow - but get out there and see what there is around you.

EDITORIAL Crikey, we’re nearly at the end of January, it only seems like yesterday I was opening my Christmas presents. Did Santa bring you all that you had asked for? I think some of mine must have fallen off his sleigh on the way here. What happened to the socks and hankies? Nora A slimmer magazine this month but still plenty to read, make special note of the dates mentioned on the front cover. Thanet Council have us down in the Draft Local Plan for another major development , this time towards the top of the village on what I believe is probably Grade one agricultural land, which surrounds the rear of properties in Greenhill and Fairfield Road. Fuller details and maps can be found in the centre pages of this Gardens Henry issue. Further to that Kent County Council are proposing to build a new railway station between here and Cliffsend, to be known as Thanet Parkway, see page 15 of this issue. If you have an interest or concerns about either or both of these projects then you now have a busy week planned towards the end of February as the Local Plan is being discussed at a public meeting in the Village Hall on Wednesday 25th and the Thanet Parkway event will Diane be the following day, Thursday 26th, in the Neighbourhood Centre, above the library. Thanks must go to Minster Primary School for again allowing us to run our competition to select new mastheads which are produced by some of the talented youngsters who attend this school, for this magazine, our website and our audio CD . We presented prizes of large art sets to the 8 winners and all of the others who entered received a sketch pad Diana and pencils by way of thanks. (Winners picture on front cover) Santa tells me he had a great time delivering presents to the pupils at Tadpoles, pupils at Monkton Primary, the members of Minster Rainbows and the children who attended the Minster Primary School Christmas Fair - he was made very welcome at all of these events which he thanks everyone concerned. for Kevin As I said earlier there’s plenty to read inside so I’ll shut up now and let you enjoy the rest of the articles. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP NEWSLETTER TO ALL OUR MINSTER RESIDENTS As this is your first newsletter of 2015, we would like to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR and RAFFLE Thank you to everyone who supported us in our fund raising project and helped make the various events we held during 2014 such tremendous successes. The prize draw was held at the Bazaar and the winner of the first prize was Mr Mrs Rowland from Minster, with the second prize going to a lady in Minster and the third prize being re-donated and eventually auctioned for sale. A full list of the all the winning numbers and lucky prize winners are on display in the surgery. IS THIS YOU? One prize is still unclaimed which is BLUE 611 with the only contact details of “J SMITH”. FUND RAISING PROJECT - TARGET ACHIEVED! We are extremely grateful to the many patients who have made such generous donations, and together with the monies made from our raffle and Christmas Bazaar we are delighted to say we have achieved our target and purchased the equipment - a “Mini Cardio Pad with Integral Printer” - which is fantastic! Raising such an amount in just a few months when we only launched the project in October is unbelievable. So a “BIG THANK YOU’ to everyone who has supported us! OFFICIAL PRESENTATION MONDAY 12th JANUARY The new equipment was presented to Dr Crosfield and the occasion was also attended by other members of staff, many patients and prize winners. As Dr Crosfield explained, the new equipment will be commissioned and brought into service as a matter of urgency as there are patients waiting for this facility. “Andreas Photography” also used the occasion to present the first prize to Mr Mrs Rowland and family. Photographs of the event can be seen on Page 23. SURGERY TRAINING DAYS 2015 Please note that the surgery will close at 12.00 noon on the following days: Wednesday 25th February; Thursday 26th March; Wednesday 29th April. Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the “NHS 111 Service” via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on “ 111 “, to receive “non urgent” confidential health advice and information. For Urgent/Life threatening issues, dial “ 999 “ as normal. MISSED APPOINTMENTS During the last month, missed appointments, although still unexpectedly high, were slightly reduced: For DOCTORS - 47 Patients ; For NURSES - 85 Patients That’s 132 PATIENTS WASTING VALUABLE TIME AND RESOURCES SO PLEASE CONSIDER THIS : If you missed a Dentist or an Opticians appointment - you would be charged! If you miss hospital appointments - 3 times and then you’re out!!!! SHOULD YOUR SURGERY TAKE THE SAME COURSE OF ACTION? DON’T NEED IT? CANCEL IT! “ON LOAN” BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORS Before Christmas we reported that several monitors had not been returned by patients and unfortunately to date there has been no response to our plea. Therefore, in future, if a patient is advised to use one of these, then a deposit of £10 will be requested at the time, which will be refunded on its safe return. We apologise for this course of action but feel we have been left with no alternative and we thank you for your cooperation and understanding. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in February, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either KEN SELF on 821200 or JEANNE LAWRENCE on 821049

Donations for Buster Thank you to all those who have donated to ‘Buster’s Get Well Parcel’ ( the Staffie who was found starved). We are pleased to tell you that in his first week of being with his foster family he gained 3kg and is now off the danger list. TAG will be updating his progress and we will be sharing these on our Facebook page (Attwells Newsagents). We take in animal food donations all year and pass them on to local rescue groups so just bring them down anytime. Thank you Karen Brazil

Frank Downs (1918 - 2014) The end of last year saw the passing of Frank Downs who with his brother Sid and sisters Lily and Joyce grew up on Hoo Farm and later lived in a property on Monkton Road. After leaving school both Frank and Sid were apprentice carpenters serving their time with Cole’s of Monkton. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughters Sheila and Yvonne at this sad time.

Thank You Karen and Jenny would like to thank all their customers and friends for all their gifts, cards and Christmas wishes. It is much appreciated and means a lot. We would also like to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year and look forward to serving and helping you all throughout 2015.

Stan & Alf (See picture on front cover) Just a quick thank you to the lovely people of Minster, who helped Stan and Alf enjoy New Years Eve in the village especially the youngsters who took "selfies"[whatever they are] with them. Happy New Year to All x

THANKS FROM MINSTER DAY NURSERY All the staff and children at Minster Day Nursery would like to say a huge big thank you to KEN BUCHANAN , one of our children's Granddad. Just before Christmas he had his own garden fitted with AstroTurf and donated the excess to the nursery to cover the decking in our Outer Space Garden to make it less slippery. After laying it all out for us he discovered there wasn't quite enough to cover the whole deck and approached the company he got it from to see if they would make a donation, unfortunately they wouldn't do this so Ken bought what he thought would be enough to cover the remaining decking, so giving the children access to this area in wet weather, and said it was his Christmas present to the nursery. On Friday 9th January he came and fitted the turf for us and discovered we were still a bit short and his estimation is that we need about ÂŁ150 to finish the job and, love him to bits, he has offered to fit it. Being a charity we are always very grateful for any donations we receive, as it benefits all of our children. We are going to leave a collection box/envelopes in the nursery office so if any of our parents or interested parties would like to donate loose change to help us raise the money required to finish the wonderful job Ken has started, that would be wonderful.

Minster Playhouse Prompt Corner At the Playhouse we really strive to put on good, enjoyable productions, always knowing that we have to compete with the best that professional theatre and television have to offer. On 13 December, our efforts were rewarded when our 2014 May Play, Move Over Mrs. Markham, was honoured with the Best Play Award at the Obelisk Award ceremony. Director Steve Clement was there to receive the award, and say a few words of appreciation. This award joins the others received over the last few years. It is always nice to be appreciated! Christmas and the Pantomime are behind us now. The Panto was a success with excellent audiences, and the extra Matinee a great hit, although it meant that the cat (Jeff Barker) was in costume for thirteen hours and was in danger of dying from heat exhaustion! Now we are gearing up for the May production which will be Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite. This is an interesting production where each of the three short Acts is a small play in itself, the common thread being that each is set in the same suite in New York’s Plaza Hotel, and each is a comedy in a different style. The first Act depicts an older couple who take the suite while their house is being painted. It is the suite in which they honeymooned 23 (or was it 24?) years ago, and it was their anniversary yesterday, or is it today? It is a wry tale of a marriage in tatters. Act two concerns two young middle aged people, childhood sweethearts, getting awkwardly back together – or are they? Act three is a funny and farcical playlet where a young bride gets a fit if nerves and locks herself in the bathroom of her parent’s suite, and their increasingly frenzied attempts to get her to come out and get married. Plaza Suite will run from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 May at 7.30 pm, in the Village Hall. The box office will open in March and tickets will be £8 each. By the time that you read this the auditions for this piece will have been held and rehearsals will be starting. If you are interested in joining us, in any capacity, contact us via the website – we look forward to hearing from you.

Handbells Over the Christmas period the Band of Handbell Ringers played at late night shopping in Minster, at a party at the QEQM Hospital, at the Thanet Farmers’ Market at the Marlowe Academy and at Services in Church on the 7 and 22 December. All performances were very well received. As always, they are on the lookout for new ringers to join the band. Why not come along to the Church on a Wednesday at 6.00 pm or Saturday at 10.00am and join in? Tower Bells The Tower Bells were rung for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and at Midnight on 31 December to welcome in the New Year. On Saturday 10 January some members of the band went to a meeting of the Kent County Association of Change Ringers at Canterbury Cathedral. A session of ringing in St. Anselm’s Tower was followed by Evensong in the Quire, sung by the Cathedral Choir, followed by a tea and business meeting. The event was attended by around 80 Kent ringers. Climbing the 74 steps to reach the passage to the ringing chamber, which runs above the ceiling of the South Aisle of the Nave, was an interesting experience and explains why bell ringers are the fine, healthy, and upstanding members of society that they are! The band welcomes new members and learners from the village and beyond. Our practice night is Wednesday from 7.30 to 9.00pm. It is a friendly band and tower with lots of fun and laughter whilst taking our ringing seriously. Come on! You know you want to!

Miss Minster 2014 – Farewell Speech. It has been an honour and great pleasure to be asked again to represent Minster for the second year in succession. Time really does fly by when you are having fun. My year as Miss Minster 2014 has gone by so fast and I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting many places including Armbouts Cappel, the Houses of Parliament and of course all the local carnivals. Meeting new people and representing my village has been truly amazing and I have made many friends that I will never forget. Not only has carnival boosted my confidence but I have also had so many laughs and great memories that will stay with me forever. I would like to say a huge thank you to Roy and Carol for all their guidance and support and without all their hard work and dedication Minster Carnival would not exist. I would also like to thank my Princesses Mollie Hollands and Grace Birch for all the wonderful memories that we share. Finally, I would like to say thank you to all the local businesses that have sponsored and supported Minster Carnival throughout the year. Thank you, Danielle Law (Miss Minster 2014)

Zac’s Musings Well the holiday period is over and we’re already nearly through the first month of the new year, worse than that though I’ve heard talk about booking holidays - you know I hate travelling!! Oh well maybe they’ll choose somewhere not too far from home and hopefully not in a caravan, especially if we go in the rainy season. A nice little cottage beside the Kennet and Avon canal would be acceptable as that’d be snug and warm if the weather’s bad, give us opportunities for long walks on the towpath and dad would be able to indulge in his passion for narrowboating and operating locks, without us having to actually live on a boat for a couple of weeks. Let’s hope someone at home reads this and takes note!

ST MARY’S CHRISTMAS FAIR – ‘WRITE FOR RIGHTS’ THANK YOU A very big thank you to all those Minster residents who visited our ‘Write for Rights’ stall at the St Mary’s Christmas Fair. ‘Write for Rights’ is an International campaign organised by Amnesty International to send greetings cards showing solidarity from people all over the world to victims of human rights abuses. People can also send appeal letters to the authorities. In Minster we focused on three prisoners: Liu Ping (China), Moses Akatugba (Nigeria) and Dr Mohammed al-Roken (United Arab Emirates). 65 cards and letters of appeal were written at the stall, and your generous donations have covered postage for them to be sent all over the world! The cards will remind the prisoners that they are not forgotten and that people everywhere stand with them. They also act as a powerful statement to the authorities. Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience of writing the cards, so we’ll be organising an event again next year! If you missed the event or didn’t hear about it, but like the idea of taking part, it’s not too late! Just visit to find out more about the campaign and all the information about what you can do. We are still so lucky in this country to be able to exercise freedom of expression and it was lovely to be able to support brave individuals who don’t have that privilege. A big thank you to everyone who took part – and of course to Sue Jezzard and Richard Braddy for letting us take part in the St Mary’s Fair. Will and Gabrielle Wollen

On behalf of Minster C of E Primary School PFA we would like to thank everyone who either donated towards or came to support our Christmas Fair on 5th December 2014. The event was a huge success and £1,336.96 was raised which will be used towards the renovation of the school’s library. We are also extremely pleased to confirm that The Pilgrims Hospice stall raised £105.00 towards this very worthy charity.

MINSTER WI The first monthly meeting of 2015 began with President, Sarah Eaton Brown, welcoming everyone and introducing officers and current committee members. She also thanked those who helped at the most enjoyable pre-Christmas events, including the Christmas Party, which was voted a success. One of Minster WI’s favourite speakers, Melanie Gibson Barton, then really entertained the meeting with her enthralling World War 1 talk. Next month’s speaker will be Janet Dean with “My grandmother was a spy”. Refreshments followed and various notices about forthcoming events in this our Centenary Year, including all members being invited to a celebratory “tea” in September – exact details to be announced later. After the raffle, Sarah closed the meeting at around 9.45. Forthcoming events: February’s monthly meeting in Minster Village Hall - 10th February @ 7.30 Sunshine Club Outing – 19th February @ 11.45 “Birthday Party” at St Augustine’s Golf Club – 25th February – 7 for 7.30 Annual Wine & Wisdom evening (£6, inc ploughman’s) – 25th April @ 7.30

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION A very Happy New Year to everyone. Our first event this year is a Quiz at the Royal British Legion on 28 March. Tables of 6-8 as usual, full details will follow next month and a buffet will be included in the price. Please book your table now with Carol on 07745 683 466. The Twinning Anniversary this year is to be celebrated in Armbouts Cappel on 28 June and we are hoping to book a coach. There will be a charge for the coach seat, but the rest of the day will include a free meal and entertainment . Please keep watching this space in Minster Matters for further details in the next issue. If you need any further information, please contact Barbara on 07874 214 279. We are pleased to announce that a new event to Minster is to be introduced this year. Planning is ongoing for a Giants Day Parade and fun afternoon to be held on 6 September. There is expected to be around ten giants, some from other parts of Kent, hopefully one from Essex and four from France. They will set off from the Holiday Inn and wend their way through the top estate, past the Royal British Legion and onward to Parkminster grounds at the Abbey. Our Twinning Giant is quite spectacular in her own right, (please look on our website ) but when you see the size of some of the others - up to 16-18 feet tall, you will be amazed. Full details of the route, and format of the day, will be published in later issues. Please keep the date free in your diaries and store up any bric a brac that you may have to sell, as there will be pitches and stalls available to hire for this purpose in Parkminster grounds.

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP A Big Thank You On behalf of the Patient Liaison Group I would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all our Patients and Friends for their generous support and donations throughout 2014. During the past year we received donations of nearly £1500 towards our fund raising projects, and together with local businesses donating generous raffle prizes for our various functions, this enabled us to purchase specialist equipment for the surgery costing nearly £4000 , including a “CardioTens/ABPM Heart Monitor”, two “Paediatric Finger Pulse Oxiometers” and a “CardioPad Mini ECG” machine. None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support of our community. So thank you all so very much indeed. Ken Self, Chair

THANK YOU FROM LIL & ESTHER Thank you for all your continued support in fund raising for Pilgrims Hospice. To Ben and the Co-op for money collected in their collecting tins, to a local dog walker for their kind donation, to the lady who gave instead of buying Christmas cards and of course the wonderful band concert organised by Audrey Hards. There were also other small donations and the income from various stalls held throughout the year. All in all we raised £2,886.59 across 2014. Thank you all so much.

SMILE INTERNATIONAL People of Minster, Dear Friends Thank you very much for your donation of 180 shoeboxes and gifts totalling £15. We really appreciate your support in this way and want you to know how grateful we are to you for putting a smile on children’s faces this coming Christmas. I am sure you will be delighted to hear that our first lorry of Christmas shoeboxes has now been delivered to Kosovo, where our Step Out Trip team of volunteers have been distributing them to lots of excited children! It has been lovely to see their smiling faces when they opened their boxes full of Christmas gifts. Do visit our Facebook page if you can to check out the photos of the children receiving their boxes. We have a second lorry of shoeboxes going to Romania and we know that there are going to be many more children with huge smiles on their faces! Thank you so much for your wonderful support which makes all this possible. Yours sincerely, Ruth A Doubleday, Director Visit for details of all our work.

Healthcare Ethiopia Partnership In our recent trip to Ethiopia, I was accompanied by four other Midwives. We spent two weeks teaching midwifery skills in the hospitals and university in Mekelle. We trained approximately 100 Healthcare Professionals. I would like to thank everyone who gave me their old glasses to take to the hospital. As you can see the man in the photo is delighted that his vision has dramatically improved. Thank you also to those who donated football shirts, knitted toys and blankets. Everything was gratefully received! Kate Humphreys

If you are aware of any resident over 65 within your Parish area that you think could benefit from the scheme please either ask them to call me on 0845 601 4430 or email me with their details. CHRISTMAS TREES No one could have failed to notice the beautiful Christmas trees in the village this year, very simple but very effective. A lot of hard work goes into this display and we wish to thank all of those who helped make it happen. There are a dedicated band of helpers who turn out each year in the cold and sometimes wet to spend a whole morning putting lights on 50 trees. These are our twiddlers (named after the green wire that has to be twiddled around the lights to make sure they don't fall off). Then there are the Tree Gangs who, armed with ladders, erect all the trees and make sure they are all connected and working. Our helpers range from 8 - 80 years of age, a wonderful group of people who make so many people happy by giving their time. Of course taking them down is just as much hard work and there are no carols, no mince pies (biscuits instead), and the atmosphere isn't quite the same but we work well as a team. So on behalf of Minster and all of those people who comment on how lovely they look we thank you all. Also thanks to our standby team Mick Bedwell, Leigh Vickers and members of the Brotherhood for repairs and help when needed. Very Special Thanks goes to Roger Thompson who goes beyond the call of duty, he checks and repairs every set of lights when needed and spends hours through the year doing so. Thank you to Roy and Carol Bailey who take the trees to Howletts for the primates to play with and eat. We are sorry we cannot dispose of anyone else's trees as Howletts will only take ours as they are natural and still fresh. Anyone wishing to help with the trees next year please see Karen in Attwells, it all happens the weekend before Late Night Shopping so make a note on your calendars (Christmas Trees Saturday 21/Sunday22 November). Karen Brazil and Ann Thomson

A scene from the Civic Carol Service

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS COMPETITION As you will have seen from this months front cover there was a really good display of Christmas lights around the village on many private properties. Jack Whybrow went around asking the owners permission to take the supplied images and MM thank him for allowing us to publish them. Having now done this Jack has had the fantastic idea of arranging a competition for next year. Jack says he knows it is a long way off but he would be delighted to hear from anyone who would be interested in helping him to organise and run this. Jack can be reached on 07545 431 483 or by email at: Watch this magazines for updates throughout the year.

Minster Late Night Shopping Always a popular annual event. Thanks to those that made it possible, Miss Minster and her Attendants, Minster School Choir for their beautiful singing which put everyone in the Christmas mood along with the Minster Handbell Ringers who were a new and welcome addition this year. Most popular attraction for the young ones of course was Santa who did a brilliant job with the never ending queue of excited children. His Grotto (see pictures on this page), as always, looked fantastic thanks to the hard work put in by Jack and Margaret Wraith. There are still some photos at Attwells waiting to be collected. Everyone was entertained by the brilliant dancing from Offcumduns, they dance the night away however cold and made everybody smile. Thanks to Viv and John Walford for providing refreshments to keep them going. A surprise visit around the village were Teresa and her lovely group of singers from Monkton, absolutely wonderful and very welcome. Thanks to the businesses that took part in this event and of course those who made the effort to come out and join in. All the people above gave their time and efforts for free, I thank you all for creating such a lovely atmosphere at Minster's Late Night Shopping it would never happen without you. I wish all the Minster Businesses a prosperous New Year and don't forget if you don't use them you will lose them. Karen Brazil
