Minster Matters reaches Issue100 !!!! Well here we are with issue number 100 and what an issue we have for you, competitions galore, and great prizes to be won, along with 4 full pages of colour pictures from across those past years. The picture to your right was on the cover of Issue 1 and we print it again now as a reminder to those who were involved. The picture shows local youngsters (they were then !!) planting trees for the Millennium at Sheriffs Court. Unfortunately their names weren’t listed, so we have been trying to put names to faces, for a few months now, and although we have had a great deal of success we have failed to identify 2 of them. They are the young lad on the very left of the group in the “hoody” and the young lady third from the right. Perhaps someone can put us out of our misery and identify them for us. Any information please contact a member of the editorial team.

They are from left to right: Unidentified, Toby Dorman, James Fuller, Hannah Cooper, Lydia Fuller (don’t you just love her hat !!), Laura Portanier, Kimberley Gallagher, Libby Alexander, Unidentified, Michelle White and Amy Northrop. Wouldn’t it be great to try to re-enact this picture for our 10yr anniversary in Feb 2010 and see how both the youngsters and the trees have grown? How about, ladies and gentlemen!! Let us know if you’re up for a re-run.

Minster Matters Apologises The Editor wishes to give his unreserved apologies, to both Shirley and Audrey for omitting to include Minster Matters sincere thanks, for the very kind donation of the profits from their Charity Dance evening, in our December issue. We have no excuse, except my own forgetfulness, but we wish it to be known that we really appreciated their very kind gesture and have felt very guilty at having not printed our thanks in the last issue. To all those who have reminded me of my misdemeanour, thank you for pointing out the omission.

EDITORIAL What a legacy Kelvin left us with, I only hope we are doing him proud and continuing to produce a magazine that all residents can be proud of, but if we’re not then let us know. Here we are with the 100th issue, so we must be doing (Minster Window Company) something right, to have had your continuing support over that time. I know we’ve had the odd hiccup along the way, especially Property Maintenance since I was handed the reins, but all I can say in my own defence Building Work is I’m getting old and SD is setting in, so bear with me, I Plastering * Rendering promise I do try, least ways my wife tells me I’m very trying uPVC Windows & Doors (isn’t that the same thing? Perhaps not !) Still you’re stuck with uPVC Fascia, Soffits & Guttering me for now, so just try and make the best of it. Repairs to existing double glazing We’ve had a great response from many of the businesses in Misted up sealed units replaced and around the village this year, lots of personal donations from Garage Doors * Decking residents, also donations from some of the village clubs and from those who have organised events to support us. All of Call on which has enabled us to keep our heads above water, and to continue to produce the audio CD’s for the visually impaired, plus we’ve been able to offer our readers the occasional chance to win themselves a worthwhile prize or two. Check out the competitions we’ve got for you , on page ?? There are some really great prizes up for grabs, which makes it well worth your while entering. So we’re expecting our mailboxes in both the Library and the Gossip Shop to be overflowing with entries this month. Did we all have a good Christmas and New Year ? Did you PIZZA-PASTA all get what you hoped for ? I did, I only really wanted one thing, and my wishes were fulfilled when I opened a huge box, to find, (01843) 823091 No77 High St, Minster I have at long last got, the telescope I’ve craved for. Now I can Restaurant and Takeaway stargaze to my hearts content, except of course when I am Friday & Saturday working on MM and chasing a print deadline. from 5.30pm Well we hope you enjoy this issue and the especially large colour section this month.(4 pages !!) R.J.BROADLEY TREE SURGERY

Valerie was born Valerie Maynard in November 1945 in Woolwich. Her father was a graduate engineer working for the Ministry of Defence. She grew up with her parents and younger brother first at Coulsden, then, in her later teens, at Winterslow near Salisbury. She attended Whyteleafe and then Salisbury Girls Grammar schools before going to Reading University, where she graduated with a BSc degree in geography. While at Reading, she joined the Rowing Club and was a member of the University Women’s Eight, on one occasion rowing the boat race course when her crew won the annual Head of the River race. She undertook Post Graduate Teacher’s Training at Bath University and then worked as a geography teacher in Devon and Lancashire and finally, Maidstone where she met her husband John. In 1979, she made the decision to retrain as a Teacher of the Deaf, and undertook a year’s training at Manchester University. In the meantime, her parents moved to the village of Plaxtol, near Tonbridge, and Valerie and John were married at Plaxtol Church in August 1980. In the same month, they moved to Thanet, living for a short while in Broadstairs before settling in Cliffsend in March 1982. Valerie started work at the Hearing Impaired Unit at Hartsdown School, Margate in September 1980, and remained there until her retirement in 2004, becoming the head of the unit in 1984. In the 1980s, she joined Minster-inThanet Evening Women’s Institute, becoming a stalwart member and serving on the committee for many years, right up to her death, most recently as secretary. She will be particularly remembered as the inspiration, designer and motivating force behind the wall hanging - “Reflections of Minster” commemorating 2000 years of history in Minster, and now permanently displayed in the Minster Village Hall. She was also one of the organisers of the Sunshine Club, providing outings for elderly or infirm WI members. In 1989, Valerie helped organise an outdoor historical pageant in Cliffsend. Valerie was always creative, and passionate about arts and crafts. She was a gifted artist and latterly became involved with card-making and paper crafts. After her retirement from full time teaching, she taught card craft groups and gave demonstrations. She also found time to pursue her other interests in sewing and stitching, and in family history research. Valerie became ill in August 2008 and was diagnosed with breast cancer in September. At first the prognosis was optimistic. But in October, her cancer spread and her condition became terminal and untreatable. Her great wish was to remain at home and John devoted himself to her care during the last 6 weeks of her life. Throughout this period, she showed immense bravery and determination at a time when she must have been feeling extremely frightened and vulnerable, and she faced the end with great courage and a quiet, calm dignity. She passed away on 20 November. Valerie will be remembered by her many friends and former pupils as an inspirational teacher and mentor, and as someone who was always ready to listen or help. Her family will remember her as a loving and devoted daughter, sister and aunt, and John as his soul-mate and greatest friend for almost 30 years.

February 2009 Community Warden, Steve Taylor Firstly I would like to wish you all a very happy and safe 2009 and that despite all the doom and gloom we at least here in Minster come through as best we can. I’m pleased to say that at the moment the village seems to be nice and settled without too many issues. That doesn’t mean to say we can take our eye off the ball and we must ensure we keep things under control. It’s great to see our new lollipop lady Karen on duty and making such a difference at what is a really busy spot. Please make sure you give her the respect she needs and deserves whilst on the road. I can assure you it’s not a good feeling when you think a motorist isn’t going to stop or completely ignores you. I’m sure most of you will have either seen or met PC Darren Reed who has joined us recently (Ed. See article below). I’d like to wish him well in his new post and to thank him for already having an impact on things in the area. I am currently looking at a project along with your Neighbourhood Watch group that we hope will ensure Minster doesn’t get unwanted visitors at the door. The project is in its very early stages and I will up-date you when I can but for now it’s very much a case of watch this space. Finally I want to give a big thank you and well done to someone who, on the odd occasion have I’ve not always met eye to eye with. He went out of his way to help a stranded motorist who had got a puncture by not only removing the damaged wheel but helped replace the good one. I’m not going to name him, it’s not something I do, but he knows who I’m referring to, and I have made others aware of his good deed. The thing you should know is that the motorist was none other that one of our local police officers!!!! Well done and again thanks.

Minster’s New Rural Beat Bobby PC Darren Reed tells us he has spent 13yrs in the force, 8 of which was on Patrol teams and 5 on Armed Response. Darren lives locally in Birchington with his wife and one youngster. When asked why he applied for this position Darren told us he was local, it was a unique opportunity to work closely with the rural community and villages, and also a chance for him to put his mark on how he wishes to police the area. He’d like to be seen out and about listening to the concerns of the public and acting on what they want doing. Darren says he believes in the “Old Fashioned Style” of policing, high visibility and approachable. He looks forward to working closely with our community and he can be phoned at any time (number on page 2) and will respond to all calls, or if anyone has concerns and wishes to speak to him in person he is willing to visit you at home. So MM says welcome Darren and we hope you enjoy working amongst us.

February 2009 Letter from the President of the Rotary Club of Ramsgate On behalf of the Rotary Club of Ramsgate I'm writing to express our sincere gratitude to the people of Minster for their wonderful generosity. Our collection with Father Christmas and his sleigh in the run up to Christmas in Minster raised the magnificent sum of £350.07, despite the difficult financial situation. This money will be donated to charities and good causes including many local ones and our main national charity this year Leukaemia Research. A full list will be published on our website below and in the local press at the end of the Rotary year in June. Why not visit our website www.rotary1120.org (click on clubs, club websites and Ramsgate). David Blackwell, President of the Rotary Club of Ramsgate

Rotary Club gets Great Results from Christmas Toy Collection Father Christmas, with help from the Rotary Club of Ramsgate, recently carried out his annual Christmas toy collection from local primary schools. The schools involved were: ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙

Chilton Primary Christ Church CE Junior Holy Trinity Church of England Primary Minster CE Primary Priory Infants St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary St. LaurenceinThanet Junior

Pupils from these schools took in from home toys and other presents which were collected by Santa on his sleigh with help from the members of the Rotary Club of Ramsgate. The bulk of the presents have been distributed, with the help of the KCC Social Services Department, to local disadvantaged children and the remainder donated to the Oasis Women’s Refuge. Club President David Blackwell said “We never cease to be amazed by local people’s wonderful generosity. I’d like to thank the staff, pupils and their parents from all the schools that took part together with Social Services staff. They can all be very proud that they have helped to brighten the Christmas of deserving local children.” More information about the Rotary Club of Ramsgate is available at www.rotary1120.org (click on clubs, club websites and Ramsgate)

Minster Twinning Association Bonjour mes amis and welcome to more exciting news from the Association. It seems like a long time has passed since Christmas and New Year, however, all of us at the Twinning wish you all the best for the year to come and hope you enjoyed all of the festive season. Now on to this year! Here are some events to put in your diary so you don’t miss out on some of the best social and entertaining functions! First to kick off this year is the Annual Race Night in the Village Hall. An event not to be missed because, not only does it get bigger and better each year, but unfortunately it is limited to the capacity of the Village Hall. So if you want to be there, you need to get in quick and purchase your ticket/s to ride in the great Minster Race Night. Tickets cost a mere £12 per head and include a superb three course meal plus, once you are through the door, you will get the chance to be a jockey and ride your horse home. The stakes aren’t high enough to make you a fortune, but the glory and prestige of winning the race is everything! If you have been before, you will want to be there again; if you haven’t, then its time you stopped losing out. Get your tickets from Bob at the Attic or contact Bernie Watler or any other member of the Committee. This is a great night out so book your place early and avoid disappointment. The Twinning Anniversary this year will be held in Armbouts-Cappel and should be spectacular. If you were at the 2008 Anniversary in the village, you’ll know how good it was! Well we think that our French Twinning friends will go all out to show us that they can equal our celebration and, with the Twinning spirit in mind, will lay down the challenge for us to do even better next year than they do this year. So how about a day out in France with a slap up meal, probably some entertainment and the opportunity to make some purchases on the boat on the way home? What else have you got to do on a Sunday afternoon? So make a note of the date now – Sunday 17th May. An advert or more will appear in Minster Matters to keep you informed. We hope to book a coach for the event and cost will depend on demand. So if you are interested in a great day out then please make your reservations as soon as possible with Bob at the Attic. This article is now getting too long and I fear that Ray may edit me so I must close soon. One last thought before I go, all you parents of past and present year 5 Pupils who so enjoyed the School Exchange and all you future parents of year 5 pupils who will enjoy the School Exchange in years to come, think about supporting us or joining us, we need new members and, more importantly, the support of the village. One last date before I close – 7th June for a day out on the Rec! Remember.......Minster Does Matter, A Bientôt.

Arnett. Business was kept to a minimum and then it was on with the serious matter of attacking the buffet tables laden with delicious goodies provided by the members, taxing our brains with a couple of quizzes and settling back to enjoy the 'in-house' entertainment of playlet, recitations and songs provided by intrepid members Mesdames Atkins, Backler, Butterworth, Hammond, Harbottle, Linihan, Richardson, Rose, Sharp and Tweedale, with Val Dyer acting as back-stage manager. A raffle and Joan's farewell brought a most enjoyable and successful evening to a close. A special mention must be made of Joan's son, John, who worked unstintingly throughout the evening as washer-up. Sadly, the January meeting started with another minute's silence, this time in memory of our oldest member Dorothy Hubbard, who had died shortly before Christmas. It was reported that the November Sunshine Club outing to Wyevale Garden Centre for shopping and tea was enjoyable, and ideas for future trips were requested. It was also reported that the hamper raffle and chocolate stall at the Christmas Fair had proved very profitable. The Village Hall Committee has approved the siting of a plaque by the Millennium Wall Hanging as a memorial to Valerie Hughes, and there are plans for a Muriel Arnett memorial bench. The month's speaker, Don Wilks, gave an entertaining and enlightening talk on the Flora and Fauna of the Eastern and Western Capes of South Africa, where he and Ann had spent a holiday. Don's talk was illustrated by superlative photography, even if those shots of snakes and a particularly hairy spider had some members shielding their eyes! Details were given of our Birthday Dinner in February, a craft day, and our popular Wine and Wisdom evening to be held in March. A show of hands proved that a proposed trip to see the televising of the Alan Tichmarch Show would be well supported. Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 10th February in the Village Hall, when Patsy Baker will give a talk on the History of Wigs. New members and visitors will be welcome. Last, but not least, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Minster Parish Council for the grant which enabled the purchase of two smart display boards for our notices and information. The boards have made such a difference to the clarity with which the notices, etc, can be displayed, and we really do appreciate this kind grant.

February 2009 Vicar’s Letter I would like to give a big “thank you” to everyone who helped make our celebrations of Christmas such wonderful occasions. First of all to those who supported the Toy Service – over 130 boxes were dispatched to “Operation Christmas Child”. Then there was the marvellous turn out for the Lychgate Carols. Thanks to the Margate Salvation Army Band, Roy Bailey for the P.A. system and those who provided drinks and mince pies afterwards. £201 was collected on behalf of the Pilgrims Hospice The introduction of a Sunday Christingle Service was very well supported and £110 was raised for the work of the Childrens Society. Thanks to those who invited the young folk and prepared the Christingles. Thanks too to all who came to our Christmas Eve Crib Service, Midnight Mass or Christmas Morning Communion. Finally, thanks to all those who decorated the church and to Chris Randall, our organist, and the choir for leading the worship. It all added up to give a really wonderful atmosphere. Minster Church Heating is up and running! After more than ten years fund-raising and a six year re-ordering programme, the church heating was turned on for the first time on the feast of the Epiphany (6th January)! The following Sunday the church was a balmy 15oC even though the outside temperature had fallen to -6oC the previous night. Such was the unexpected warmth; some members of the congregation had to take off their coats! This is wonderful news, even though the project is not yet complete and more funds need to be raised. There will be a celebratory “turning on”, hopefully in February. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported our efforts thus far, and promise you all a very warm welcome to church in the future! Rev’d Bob Coles

Progress of Primary Football Team The colour pic on page 16 shows Minster Primary Football Team in their new kit (kindly funded by the PTFA). Minster Flower Show Hello from the Minster Flower Show committee and, yes we are preparing for the Show on Saturday 18th July (so put the date in your brand new diary or on the calendar! A few reminders:• We would like some help on Friday / Saturday and Sunday with setting up / moving stuff / managing people and taking down. If you feel you can lend us some of your time please put your name / contact phone number / preferred day and length of time available on a piece of paper and give it to Karen at Attwells or email it to domkv123@hotmail.com (subject flower show help). Even half an hour would help us at crunch times of the show. • The Theme for this year is "On the Water" with three photographic sections being "Larking about on water"; "A waterscape" and "Life in the water". We hope you enjoy the challenge and want you to use your imaginations! • It is our intention to change the admission rates in order to maintain the standard of the Show given rising costs that we have to pay. We discussed this issue for half of our last meeting and went round in several circles. One of the reasons for the change is to make life easier for you and the volunteers on the gates to know exactly how much to pay. We have decided on £3 for everyone keeping under 5's free. This decision was not taken lightly and we are aware it may spark some debate. Please do talk to us (nicely); we did think it would still be value for money compared with other day out costs. • You can buy 1 schedule and photocopy the picture / entry form for all family members. Children entering items or the Skate Competition will still get free entry bands. Launch day will be Saturday 9th May; 10-12 outside the Gossip Shop. (put that on diary thing) Thank you again for last year. We are looking for things to make it as good for all the family this year. As usual any ideas / suggestions gratefully received by any Committee member (Karen at Attwells is a main contact for many of you, but you can email address above, or talk to Danny or Bernie) Dominique (Chairman)

It’s been a bit chilly lately, hasn’t it? While I will be the first to admit I’m hoping spring is just around the corner, the reality is, it’s still winter. Eco-Tips: If it seems like it is impossible to keep your house warm, check around your doors and windows to see if you feel any drafts. If your house is being invaded by the cool Minster air, you might want to help stop that by using draft stoppers or even rolled towels to prevent some of the air from entering.

Minster Mayhems We have just had a short holiday and are now back practising hard for next year. We have already been invited to the Rochester and Tenterden Folk Festivals and are very excited about representing the village at these major International events (as well as Folk Week in Broadstairs). We will also be dancing on St George's Day, May Day and the Twinning Day in the Village. Anyone interested in joining, especially as this is a dying tradition! (as seen on the news) we are at The Old Schools from 5.15 - 6.30 on a Friday during term time. Come and join in to see if you like it.

Policing Patterns to Meet the Villages’ Needs Incorporated within the Police report to the January Parish Council Meeting was an initiative to prioritise areas of the village that need special attention. It is considered essential that members of the public are fully consulted when identifying these special areas and to that end readers are requested to offer any helpful comments through the Editor of this magazine, to be forwarded to the Parish Council Clerk for inclusion in future meetings. TIGER’S TIP To remove really badly burnt-on-food from any kind of pan, soak it overnight in biological washing powder.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - CREDIT CARD SCAM Since the beginning of the year the number of scam emails circulating and scam telephone calls seem to have reached an all time high. One telephone scam is worth mentioning, the caller gives a staff number (which is false), and promises a card rebate after raising questions about the misuse of your credit card in a way that could lead you to believe the call is genuine, it then concludes by asking for your card number and card 3 digit security number. NO CREDIT CARD COMPANY OR BANK WOULD DO THIS THIS A SCAM Please do not give your card information to anyone no matter how legitimate they might seem. Many thanks, Mick PC Mick Wright, County Watch Liaison Officer

Thanks from the Women’s section of the British Legion We the women’s section of the British Legion would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has supported us in our fund raising events during 2008. Due to your generosity we were able to send £1,600 to the benevolent fund and £353 to the poppy appeal. This is always accepted gratefully by the charity that does so much to help the services whether they be veterans or present day personnel who find their self in need because of injury or widows and dependants of those that have lost their life in recent conflicts. We would also like to thank The Minster & Monkton British Legion Club for helping and supporting all our efforts as without yourselves and the Club we would not be able to raise this money. Again many thanks and A Happy New Year to you all. R.B.L. Women’s Section.

Update on Karen West’s - Aid in India December bought the completion of the house for 2 orphans Karen was helping to build, it was handed over a few days before Christmas. She and 2 other volunteers that went out with her, helped to organise a party for 300 children who are in some way being helped by the Community Health and Development Programme (the organisation Karen is working with). At Christmas they had a week off so they went up the coast to Kovlam to top up their tans, they also got to ride, feed and bath an elephant, seeing the New Year in on the beach with the locals. Over the past few weeks they have been helping Habitat who have sent engineers and builders to the area to build 6 houses in 2 weeks. She is also helping to monitor a health programme for teenage girls. Minster FC (First team) would like to say a big thank you to Bens Supermarket and Londis for supplying the team with a brand new kit this season. This has been greatly appreciated by all players and once again thank you. February 2009 MINSTER PARISH COUNCIL Meeting 13th January 2009 There is very little of interest to report from this meeting. The Chairman and Assistant Clerk have met with Eastonways to discuss possible amendments to routing of their services through Minster to allow for greater and easier usage of the services by residents. A meeting was still to be arranged with Stagecoach and Members would be advised of the outcome in due course. Members considered a letter which had been received from a concerned resident with reference to the street lighting in the area of the High Street adjacent to Norton Drive. Danny Day had reported further flooding in Watchester Lane and he told the Members that the drains in the area needed cleaning, and in part failure to keep the ditches in the vicinity cleared was also a cause for this continuing problem. The Chairman stated he would raise this issue at his meeting with the Highways Liaison Officer.

The Peoples’ Millions Grant Just a brief letter to say a big thank you to all those people who gave so much of their time and support to the Parish Council’s project for the Minster Pedal Break. Councillor Bob Grove as Chairman of MATCH organized a great campaign, with the help of so many, to try to secure the £50000 award for the Village and sadly we were not successful. However I do need to make particular reference to the invaluable help and advice received from the staff of MM and to Karen and Jenny at Attwell’s who allowed the area adjoining the shop to be used as a “voting station” to remind and encourage residents to phone in. Finally residents and friends of Minster thank you for voting for your project; we nearly did it. Kyla Lamb, Clerk Minster Parish Council

VACANCY FOR PARISH COUNCIL CLERK A vacancy will soon exist for a Parish Clerk to Monkton Parish Council. The hours and salary are negotiable. Currently the clerk would be expected to work around 8 hours per week, but this is flexible. This is an immensely rewarding and interesting position, requiring a number of inter personal and administrative skills, giving the successful applicant plenty of scope to contribute something really useful to the village community. Please contact Robin Tapsell, Chairman Monkton Parish Council, on Tel no (01843) 840704 in the first instance for an informal discussion.

LENT 2009: MINSTER “Do this in remembrance of me.” A celebration of Holy Communion. We invite you to this celebration during which we remember Jesus. “Do this in remembrance of me,” Jesus said to his disciples at the Last Supper when he took bread and wine, and gave thanks to God. During Lent, there will be an opportunity to join a weekly, evening celebration of Holy Communion at Minster church. It will be held every Wednesday at 7.15pm from Ash Wednesday, 25th February until the 8th April inclusive. In order to emphasize the corporate nature of this special remembrance celebration there are alterations to the usual form of seating, and the giving of communion. Worship songs will form The Preparation, whilst the celebration will be interspersed with songs and Taizé chants appropriate to the liturgy. We would be very pleased to be joined by anyone ~ whether or not Confirmed. Further details from Rev’d Bob Coles: Thanet 821250

On Tuesday December the Carol Service took place in front of the church gates at 7:30pm. It went on for 60 minutes. The school choir sung some fantastic songs that were about Jesus and God. When our vicar Bob Coles was saying some things about the birth of Jesus and why we celebrate Christmas some people went out to collect money for a hospital service. They made a lot of money. So much money I can’t even remember how much they raised. It was a beautiful service. Nearly everybody who lived in Minster came. We all hope you came.
