YOUTH COUNCIL

“The Council is working alongside Jack Whybrow with a view to forming a Youth Council. Jack is looking for young people within the Village, between the ages of 11 and 18, who may be interested in becoming a part of a this venture. If you are interested in being involved with what could become an exciting community project please phone Jack on 07971 290 678 who will be happy to discuss this matter and what the young of the Village will be hoping to achieve”

VILLAGE POLICE (Or Lack Of!) How many village residents are as fed-up as I at the lack of police presence in our village? I have gone through various channels to highlight our need, but only get empty promises. The next Minster Matters will be in February, where the editorial team are willing to print a basic form that I am asking you to consider, sign and take to the library to kick off a petition. With enough support, the powers that be cannot continue to ignore our need. During the next couple of months, just observe how often you see so much as a police car, let alone an actual constable in the village. (Editor’s note: Look for the form as a pullout in the centre of our next issue)

NORAD SANTA Christmas is coming and once again during the whole of Christmas Eve, if you are lucky enough to own a computer, you and your youngsters will be able to track Santa's progress by logging on to (website goes live again on Dec 1st) Don't forget he won't come if you're not in bed and asleep before he gets to your house, so watch his progress by all means but don't stay up to see if he lands on your roof !!. Remember to leave out a mince pie for Santa and a carrot or two for his reindeer. If by some very lucky chance he brings you a new computer, to replace that old one in the corner, don't throw the old one away, contact Minster Matters and we will recycle it for you.

Southern Water Minster B Water Supply Works Temporary Access Road from Greenhill Gardens

Work Commencing 18 November for 15 weeks (inc 2 week shutdown over holiday period) The normal access for the Water Supply Works is via Prospect Road. We are aware that this is a particularly narrow road and is not ideal for the transportation of heavy plant and materials on a regular basis. As such an agreement has been made to use the Farmer’s Field with access via Greenhill Gardens for access to the site for heavy plant and machinery to minimise the use for this purpose of Prospect Road. The majority of heavy goods and deliveries will take place within the first 2 weeks of the works commencing. Following this period this type of deliveries will be minimised. Upon completion of the project the plant and equipment will then be removed. Southern Water would like to thank you in advance for your co-operation and patience. We are working hard to ensure that disruption is kept to an absolute minimum and appreciate your support during these essential works. EDITORIAL Bumper issue for your delectation this month, no more now until the end of January, we give the team a well earned rest over the festive season. Lot’s of interesting reading in this one to keep you occupied for a while though, loads of things to do or see over Christmas and New Year. We’ve lined up some more of the team down the left of this page for you this Diane month, they’re not all here yet but we’re working on it. Since I was here last I’ve had my flu jab, been to the diabetic clinic , got told off!! blood figure was up again!!, so more pills to swallow. Oh well at least I was breathing when I got up this morning so that was a bit of a bonus. (I know there are some that may disagree but I don’t care) Nora I put out a plea on Facebook, not something I use very often, to ask if we could find a volunteer or two to help us with our audio recordings, was I amazed when within 2 minutes I’d had a reply followed in the next 20 minutes by a further 4, in total we had 6 offers to come and see what it was all about and a further offer of an additional reader, something else we are always looking for. Can you read out loud, clearly and precisely? if Henry so and you would like to join us to help produce our audio Cd’s for the visually impaired we’d love to hear from you. I attended the recent Public Meeting held in regard to the Community Led Plan that we all had questionnaires for earlier in the year. A very disappointing turn out, there were very nearly more Parish Councillors than general public. What was billed as a 2 hour meeting was all done and dusted within 40 minutes including tea and biscuits. However Diane those who did attend gave some useful feedback to the Council and likewise the Council told the meeting of their plans on how they intended to tackle the ‘Action Plan’, some of which is either in hand or has already been started. The most noticeable item that will be seen by many very soon is a temporary ‘pinch point’ on the corner by the butchers which if it proves successful will be put in as a permanent feature. There are also plans for a Diana crossing from the New Inn to the Kebab shop, and one across Church St/Bedlam Court Lane to allow easier access for pedestrians going to and from Rivers Court. There may possibly be improvements made to some of the pavements in High Street and what is at present a voluntary ‘one-way’ system around the Butts Field estate, especially at school times, may become a permanent compulsory system. Other items highlighted in the Kevin action plan will be looked at and considered on a rolling program as and when funding becomes available. Well I think that’s it for this year just need say we at Minster Matters wish all our readers and listeners a very Happy Christmas and New Year, we look forward to entertaining you again in 2014. Just enough space left to ask the usual question ‘Where’s Zac’?

Cash in The Attic

Hello All. We will be manning a table at the village Christmas Bazaar, so please come along on Saturday 30 November to support all participants. We hope to offer you a warm welcome as you arrive! O’Sheas have kindly provided a cake, so if you can correctly guess its weight on the day, it will be yours. Yummy, I must have a few guesses at that. Another side line will be a lottery board, there will be 49 numbers on the board and all you need to do is to buy a lucky number from the list, if the lotto bonus ball drawn on Saturday 7 December matches the number you have chosen you will win £25. See you there. A couple of members of the committee represented the Association at the Remembrance Service in Armbouts Cappel on Monday 11 November. They survived the cold wind during the service and travelled back to Calais, (with 2 valued Minster inhabitants who kindly taxied them there!) for a little retail therapy and a warming meal, prior to the return ferry trip. Planning is well underway for the Anniversary celebrations to be held in the village on 4 May 2014. Entertainment is being sought and any suggestions or offers will be considered. Please put your thoughts forward. There will be a report from the AGM in the next issue. We all hope you have a very Happy Christmas and we thank you all for the support you have given us throughout 2013. 2014 could be equally successful, so let’s all drink to that! Hic! Carol

MINSTER PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS

“Move Over Mrs. Markham” The Minster Playhouse May Play for 2014 will be “Move Over Mrs.Markham” a farce written by Ray Cooney and John Chapman, and will be directed by Steve Clement.

Auditions will take place at 7.30pm, on Thursday 9th January, in the upstairs room of The Bell Inn. The dates for production, and therefore for your diary, are 14th to the 17th of May 2014 and already we have lighting, sound, musical director, set builder, and a potential stage manager on board. The play which Steve will set in 1971, (with colour scheme, hairstyles, costume and lack of mobile phones, to match), has a single multi-roomed set and a cast of nine. There are five female and four male characters and for those of you who know your British Actors of the early seventies think Trevor Bannister, (from Are You Being Served?) Tony Britton, Terence Alexander (yes, from Bergerac) Moira Lister, Cicely Courtnidge and so on. Whilst there are principals not everyone is on stage all of the time which gives nice balance and there are a couple of beautiful cameos which with the right Actor/Actress could be scene stealers… The dialogue is terribly non-PC but it is all in good spirit and whilst Steve wouldn’t seek to change a single word, there may be a comment somewhere in the programme to acknowledge our changing times. Also in best farce tradition there will be revealing costumes, or the lack of them, and the play, whilst advertised as “adult content” then, today would probably attract a PG rating. To quote, unashamedly, Alan Ayckbourn, writing this year… “In any farce, sooner or later somebody’s got to lose their trousers and the girl’s got to lose most of her clothes, or the audience wants its money back.” Move over Mrs Markham adheres to that concept.

MINSTER LAD COMES GOOD (This report is published with thanks to the Isle of Thanet Gazette) Former Kent and Margate All-rounder Oliver Robinson has signed a Professional contract with Yorkshire Cricket Club after successful spells with both Leicestershire and Yorkshire during the 2013 Summer Season. He decided to leave Kent in May after just one match this season, ironically against Yorkshire, and played for both Leicestershire and Yorkshire 2nds in all formats of the game before making three 1st team appearances for Yorkshire and debuting in the YB40 for them against Leicestershire at Grace Road. He finished 1st in the bowling averages for Yorkshire 2's and third in the batting with a seasons total of 1282 runs, taking 59 wickets and 27 catches across the seasons cricket. Yorkshire manager and Ex Aussie Test Cricketer Jason Gillespie said “He's obviously been on the Kent books in the past, and he has played some second-team cricket with Leicestershire this season. He's also played a few second-team games for us, and he got 90 not out and match figures of 5-21 with the ball against Warwickshire and has regularly been amongst the runs and wickets. "He's a hard hitting middle order player who runs in, bowls at decent pace and hits the track hard." Commenting on his 1st team debut Gillespie said "As we've done with the YB40 this year, we see this as an opportunity to give someone a crack. It gives Oliver an opportunity - and for us to have a look at him to see if he could have a future with us.” His Club Captain former Yorkshire and Derbyshire batsman Chris Taylor also believes "Ollie could fit the bill for Yorkshire as a fast medium all-rounder who can bat at No 6" He continued " Ollie scored a match winning 99 not out for us during the season from an impossible position and "that was the best unbeaten 99 I have ever seen" Oliver himself, who has chosen No 24 as his squad number already for next season was delighted and said" it was more than I expected getting a full pro contract, especially after only leaving Kent in May but it is a great club here that is really professional" Ollie’s bat and kit sponsor this year have been Andrew and Vicky Kember at Hitshard and he would like to extend his thanks to them for all their support.

APPEAL FOR: Minster Xmas Lights We are renewing the village Christmas tree lights so that everyone has the same LED lights. This will also save hours of maintenance every year replacing bulbs. We have to replace some of the holders that are broken as well as supplying and fitting new electric boxes to 5 sites. This will cost approx £2000. The money will have to be raised to cover this and any donations would be gratefully received. There is a donation pot in Attwells for any odd change you may have. Thank you. Thank you’s…

The Family of the late Edith Russell (Edie) would like to thank…all the friends and neighbours in Brockmans Close and the Minster community for their condolences, kind messages, flowers and cards. We thank Minster Church and the Service conducted by Paul Willins who gave his very welcome guidance, support and understanding. We also thank WS Cole & Son for their funeral services. Shirley and Audrey would like to thank… all who attended our Spring Dance and apologise for having to cancel the Winter one. We will be back in the Spring – look out for the date. The proceeds will go to the Doctors’ Surgery Project. Thank you. Frankie Stone would like to thank… the Corner House in Minster who supported me and were a massive help when I completed an event on Tuesday 5th. I'd like to give a massive thank you for their generosity and for cooking such a beautiful meal for my family and friends! MINSTER TANDOORI 24 years ago, back in 1989, Luthfur Rahman first opened the doors of Minster Tandoori and whilst it is still owned by him, he now runs another very successful Indian restaurant in Margate. His business in the village though continues to go from strength to strength with Ali Azmal at the helm. Ali started out in 1993 as a front of house waiter but in 2009 took on the position of Manager, since then he has never looked back. Ali tells Minster Matters it was always his dream to manage the business. If you’ve ever eaten here you will know only too well that Ali always has a cheeky grin and lots of banter, along with his enthusiasm and commitment, the quality and quantity of the food and the pleasantness of his staff, this is truly a place to visit for a great meal in extremely pleasant surroundings. Recently 60+ children from Minster Primary School spent an afternoon here sampling a ‘Taste of India’ as part of their education program and we were lucky enough to be invited to attend and partake in the sampling. Although there were one or two youngsters who were unsure of the spicy taste most ate their meals with gusto, with seconds and even third helpings being devoured by many. It was really good to see them all enjoying themselves, even the school staff members were treated to some delicious dishes and it was obvious they also enjoyed the meal and hospitality. Ali and his team even catered for those with nut allergies. So, Minster Tandoori, what can I say; “a truly enjoyable and intimate restaurant, well worth making the journey for”. “Nice one Ali” (And all this from someone who doesn’t like spicy food. Can’t win them all!!)

Minster Matters THANET COUNTRYSIDE TRUST MONKTON NATURE RESERVE

“First Impressions” Like so many people, I have often travelled considerable distances, often with my family, to see some of the many attractions that Kent has to offer, while ignoring the beautiful gems that are on my own doorstep. For me, the nature reserve at Monkton was one of these overlooked little gems. It’s not as though I didn’t know it existed, I’ve driven past it countless times, and often made a mental note to visit sometime, perhaps when I found the time. Now that I have ‘discovered’ this little environmental oasis, I chide myself that I didn’t find that time any sooner.

So what do I think of the Reserve? . In a word: “overwhelming”! Particularly its potential to be a centre of excellence for ecological conservation and education in East Kent. The possibilities and opportunities are endless, as all of the raw materials already exist on the site. It accommodates two varieties of chalk habitat, grassland and woodland; it features surface water and groundwater sustained ponds; there is a wide assortment of flora, including many rare native orchids; and these attractive environments are encouraging a number of different vertebrates and invertebrates onto the Reserve. With these levels of diversity the Reserve can offer environmental learning to all age ranges, from 3 to 103.

What is more, it is a bit like Dr Who’s Tardis: “bigger on the inside”! The long-defunct quarry accommodates a Field Study Centre, an astronomical observatory, even a bat cave, and still has more than enough room for a host of other projects and ideas. So may I offer a little word of advice: don’t let Monkton Nature Reserve become your ‘overlooked little gem’. Do pay it a visit … and while you amble along the grassy footpaths of the nature trails, pause for a moment to consider what could be achieved with this tremendous asset. All we need is investment and support, and a little imagination ... Andrew Ogden Fundraising and PR Officer 25/10/2013 Further Information: • The Monkton Nature Reserve is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Thanet Countryside Trust, whose aim is to be the centre of excellence for ecological conservation and education in East Kent. • The 16 acres of the Reserve contain a variety of very diverse habitats, including woodland, cliffs, and important chalk grassland. The site includes an astronomical observatory, the first man-made bat cave in the UK, and both groundwater and surface water ponds. • The Reserve is open to the public seven days a week, including Bank Holidays, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm in the summer months (April to October), and until 3:00 pm in the winter months (November to March). • Car parking is free, and there is no charge for admission to the Field Study Centre, which includes natural history displays, a geological museum, and a very extensive second-hand bookshop. Entrance to the Reserve is a very modest £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for children; these fees are waived for members. -

Minster Matters ZUMBA

Churchwarden’s Letter We are fast approaching that time of year when we all start to rush around in preparation for Christmas. We always spend too much and, of course, eat and drink too much; and why not? After all it is a time of celebration. Hopefully we can also stop and think about the true meaning of Christmas. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Such a gift! What better gift can we give this Christmas than LOVE? So we should take the opportunity this year to spend time with those we love and share in that joy. Offer a kind word to someone you know who is alone this Christmas; just a smile, a hug or handshake or a friendly “Merry Christmas” can make someone’s Christmas special. Over the Christmas period there are many opportunities to reflect and to share God’s love; to thank God for that special gift as a community at the Lych Gate Civic Carol Service on the 17th December at 7.30p.m. or at one of the many services listed in Minster Matters. We do hope that you will all have a happy, joyous and peaceful time and that this Christmas will prove to be a time of special blessing to you all. Sue Jezzard & Fran Kimmons

B] H2B Site (Heronsbrook) The Clerk reported that the transfer agreement had now been signed and that TDC would now be releasing £15K for landscaping purposes. Meetings were being arranged with companies which provide and install play equipment and that further funds were available for additional trees if required. A meeting had been arranged with a landscaping contractor for the coming week in order to review the planting. C] Members received the Clerk’s report on possible measures to replace the seat demolished in a road accident and sited at Pinks Corner. TDC had said that they would not replace the seat at this site but would provide a seat for alternative siting. Cllr Quittenden reported that several residents had asked him for the seat to be replaced at Pinks Corner. What can I say this month? I Know why do kids have to ruin events like Halloween by upsetting folk who don’t want to be involved - then there’s Firework Night, does the name give it away? Then why does it seem to stretch across a longer period, I hate the things and they’ve terrified me just about every evening for 2 weeks, my own stress levels have been at breaking point never mind his indoors!!

Congratulations to President Ken Wooldridge, Treasurer Malcolm Kennett and Pam Wooldridge on being presented with ‘Merit Awards’ by the Kent County Bowling Association Do have a Happy Christmas, see you in the New Year. THE VILLAGE SIGN IN MINSTER (Article by Christopher Howse republished courtesy of the Daily Telegraph ) The village sign at Minster in Thanet, Kent, says “AD 670”. But the settlement is far older, for Roman bricks are built into the tower of St Mary’s Church. Autumn suits Minster. Seagulls sat on the steep-pitched roof the church and pigeons cooed round its tower last week as the leaves began to fall – though not those of the mature olive trees near the churchyard, which clement winters have allowed to flourish. Even so, the blazing log fire at the Bell public house was welcome once sunset approached. Minster once stood on the shore of the Isle of Thanet when it was a true island separated from Kent by the sea. That was a source of prosperity from trade, but also a fatal weakness, for the Vikings repeatedly plundered and destroyed Minster. The name is from the Latin for monastery (as in “Westminster”), and the year 670 was when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Theodore of Tarsus, consecrated the monastery of nuns here. St Mary’s is a fine, large church, with a stone-vaulted chancel. “The beauties of the east end are fully revealed inside,” says Pevsner’sBuildings of England volume. But it was locked when I arrived, so I crossed Church Street and looked at an even more intriguing old building – Minster Abbey. A mystery is introduced in the splendid new edition of Pevsner: Kent, North East and East, edited by John Newman (Yale, £35). Was the minster that was ruled by St Mildred in the seventh century, it asks, on the present site of Minster Abbey, or where St Mary’s Church stands? No surviving structure in either place is as old as that. Some Saxon work is incorporated in St Mary’s but at Minster Abbey the original church was long ago lost. The beautiful beach-pebble and

mudstone walls there once belonged to a grange, a dependent farm that was part of St Augustine’s monastery in Canterbury. This grange was founded in the reign of Canute. The relics of St Mildred were then transferred to Canterbury. She was much revered, and London had its own church of St Mildred Bread Street, destroyed by bombs in 1941. Today, Minster Abbey is occupied by contemplative Benedictine nuns. They set up there in 1937 and soon found themselves in a very trying position, for their priory was an offshoot of the Abbey of St Walburga in Bavaria. With the outbreak of war, the German nuns who had come over to lend their energies to the foundation were interned. A compromise allowed the nuns to stay in the care of a Benedictine convent at Teignmouth, Devon. At Minster Abbey last week, the simple chapel was open. Inside, ribs of pale timber rise from the ground to support a steep-pitched roof, and the cool, silent space is lit by five lancet windows at the east end. The chapel is only 20 years old, because its predecessor was burnt down in 1987, the same year that the great storm destroyed the spire of St Mary’s Church, now reconstructed in lead over its medieval timbers. War, fire and storm are the sort of things that have recurred in the 1,300 years since St Mildred’s day. Surprisingly, a relic of the saint is still honoured in the chapel. It comes, not from the shrine established in Canterbury, which was destroyed at the Reformation, but from Deventer in Holland, where it had apparently been preserved since the 11th century. Some traditions value relics more highly than others, but the relics of St Mildred seem to have helped cement relations between Minster Abbey and Orthodox believers. Among those with whom it has formed links since 1996, as though by chance, are Christians in Aleppo, Syria, currently in a most dangerous position. If this peaceful corner of Kent seems a long way from war-torn Syria, it should be remembered that Archbishop Theodore, who blessed the priory in 670, spent his formative years at Antioch on the river Orontes in Syria, now Antakya in Turkey, very near the Syrian border.

Scam telephone call – Office of Fair Trading A concerned Kent resident contacted KCC Trading Standards after receiving a telephone call from a person claiming to be from the Office of Fair Trading. The caller started asking a lot of personal questions and claimed that their creditors were not happy with the debt management plan they had in place. Although the consumer was already working with a debt management business about their finances, they decided to ask the caller some questions. The caller was unable to answer the questions so the consumer hung up the phone. This is a scam telephone call. The Office of Fair Trading would not contact individual people in this way. KCC Trading Standards advises consumers not to give an unsolicited caller personal details even if they claim to be calling from a Government body. Scammers need you to reveal your passwords to access your bank account/s and can use your personal details to get loans and credit cards. Never reveal your password/s or give your personal details to an unsolicited caller. KCC’s Highways & Transportation – Survey door-to-door KCC Highways and Transportation has commissioned BMG Research to undertake a door-to-door survey from Saturday 2 November to Friday 27 December. BMG Research canvassers will present to residents; ● Photo identification card ● Letter of authority from KCC The survey should take around 10 minutes to complete. The purpose of the survey is to find out your view on the roads and pavements in Kent, local transport provision and infrastructure and whether you have anything transport-related you would like to bring to their attention. If you receive a knock on the door from a BMG Research interviewer and want to verify who they are then please contact BMG on their helpline; BMG Helpline: 0800 358 0337

HP Chromebook 11 - safety notice

MONSOON CHILDRENS SPARKLE FAIRY DUST NECKLACE (498418)

Google and HP are pausing sales of the HP Chromebook 11 after receiving a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to overheating during use. They are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify the appropriate corrective action, and will provide additional information and instructions as soon as they can.

We recommend that customers that have purchased this necklace return them to their local store (or alternatively contact their customer services department) for a full refund.

Unfortunately a number of the bottles have been made in glass, not plastic as specified and approved by Monsoon Accessorize. This presents a potential safety hazard.

Customers who have purchased an HP Chromebook 11 should not use the original charger provided with the product. In the interim they may continue using their HP Chromebook 11 with micro-USB chargers that work with other tablets and smartphones. It should be noted that this advice would mean that Chromebooks will take much longer to charge than they would with the original charger.

Minster Matters Editors this month were

Olivia Ringrose and Holly Warner Bonfire Night By Harriet Taylor Bonfire night is a time to remember Guy Fawkes and make life size figures of him which can then be thrown onto the fire. This year the fireworks, on the recreation ground, were cancelled due to the terrible weather, but the people in charge of the Bridge bonfire took a huge risk by not cancelling. However, despite the terrible weather, the fireworks looked AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

National Poppy Day 2013 At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month we commemorate the men and women who have given their lives in both World Wars and also remember those in Afghanistan. At Minster Primary School, we had a special assembly and the whole school was silent for 2 minutes at 11 O’clock. Our choir went to the Spitfire Museum, in Manston, where they sang and said prayers and poems. We interviewed Sophie, who is in the choir, she said: “We had to leave school at 10:30 to arrive at the Spitfire Museum for the start of the ceremony at 10.40.

Bonfire night all began in 1605 when a group of men, led by Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in order to kill King James. However, somebody found out and Guy Fawkes was captured and killed for treason. So now you know why people say: Remember, remember the 5th of November with gunpowder treason and plot I see no reason why gunpowder and treason should ever be forgot.

When we arrived we had to sing to the public and then there was a presentation of poppy wreaths which were laid outside by the memorial stone.” Here are some facts:

School Council By Holly Warner

● It is the 65th anniversary of poppy day.

This year our school has decided to create a School Council so children can say their ideas. Mrs Newman arranged for children to apply to become a school councillor.

● People in Afganistan are also remembered on poppy day.

To become a school councillor you had to write a manifesto explaining why you should get the job. Then the rest of the pupils voted for two councillors for their class. To be a school councillor it is important to be approachable, a great listener, a good communicator and be fair, you also need to be efficient, assertive and organised. The children on the School Council will have meetings with the adults and tell them what they would like to change about our school.

30

● The Royal Family lay poppy wreaths at the Cenotaph in London.
