Did you go to ‘The Show’? I take my hat off to all the Ray stall-holders, traders, Show committee members, entertainers, gate attendants, litter-pickers, the first-aider, disabled toilet attendants, parade marshalls, Grand Draw ticket sellers and writers, photographers, Carnival Courts, general dogsbodies, Diane members of the public and anyone else I may have forgotten, who gave up a glorious day on the beach to make the afternoon another great success - well done everyone, oh and thank you to McDonalds for our water - it was real a lifesaver!! Diane We have an eight page colour spread in the centre of this issue with thanks going to Nik Mitchell (pages 15 & 16), Diane Cotterill (17 & 18), Clive Bowles (19 & 20) and Simon Pickering (21 &22) for their superb images, whilst those on our front cover Diana were taken by a drone belonging to David English, so thank you David. All of their photographs and a couple of videos (one of which is a timelapse) will be available very soon on the Show’s website at, so please go and take a Kevin look. Cup winners, Baby Show and Flower Princess pictures will also be available for collection from Attwells after Monday 1 August. Now we start planning for 2017!! Our Nextdoor Minster Thanet website continues to grow at a steady rate and we’ve been discussing what to spend our £500 winnings on, so if you’ve already signed up and haven’t yet given us your opinion then please take a few minutes to do so, then I can then let Nextdoor UK know what we intend to spend it on and they will release the funds. If you haven’t yet signed up then be assured we’d love to see you there, remember however you must live within the parish boundary or you will be unable to apply to join (the software will check your postcode before it will allow your application). It is a closed network, unlike Facebook, and messages can only be read by members. To sign up go to and use the invite code RVYDEW, I look forward to welcoming you aboard. If for some reason this code doesn’t work then just drop me an email, to, and I’ll send you another link. Well that seems to be about as much as I can squeeze in again, so it just leaves me to ask the usual question -”Where’s Zac?” Gel Polish on fingers and toes only £28 Book now to avoid disappointment

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP OUR NEW PROJECT To purchase an “Ankle-Brachial Index” (ABI) screening device to help diagnose patients who suffer with “Peripheral Arterial Disease” (PAD). This is a circulatory problem where narrowing arteries can cause reduced blood flow to your limbs. Groups more likely at risk to PAD include those with Hypertension, Diabetes, Overweight and Heavy Smokers. The approximate cost of this state of the art equipment is £1500 - £2000, dependent on model. Full details can be found on our notice board in the surgery. PRESENTATION OF NEW EQUIPMENT A picture of the presentation of the new equipment purchased last month can be seen on page 25 of this magazine. We would like to thank all those patients and friends who attended the presentation and made donations to our project fund raising and whose kindness and support helped make it such a success, thank you everyone. SEASONAL WINTER ‘FLU VACCINATIONS Although at the time of going to press, we cannot confirm the actual dates, Vaccination Clinics will be held towards the end of September/October as usual. Appointments will be available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. Eligible and “at risk” patients will receive a reminder on their “Repeat Prescription List” and will be invited to make an appointment. If you have any concerns about your eligibility please contact Reception. IT’S HOLIDAY TIME! Despite the fact that our weather doesn't always agree, for many of us summer holidays beckon! So please remember to order your “Repeat Prescriptions” in good time, and most importantly, check whether your “Annual Review” is imminent. Please also remember that our Healthcare Professionals take their holidays at this time as well, and our resources may be slightly stretched, so please make your appointments in good time and please ensure they are used appropriately. MISSED APPOINTMENTS Oh dear back to square one! This sadly illustrates that sometimes our resources are not being used appropriately. Last month 50 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 56 patients did not attend their nurse’s appointment. So that’s still 106 patients wasting valuable appointments and time. Why bother making an appointment (difficult enough to do at times!) and not use it? Don’t need it? Cancel it. Keep forgetting? Get our text reminder service. A SINCERE “THANK YOU” TO THOSE WHO DO CANCEL OR APOLOGISE! FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY Last month patient responses to “Would you recommend our Practice” were as follows: Extremely likely/Likely - 90%; Extremely unlikely/Unlikely - 6%; Unsure/Don’t know - 4% SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00noon onwards on the following days: Bank Holiday - Monday 29 August - Closed all day. Staff Training - Thursday 29 September: Wednesday 19 October. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times, and of course, please don’t forget to include all the family who may require repeat prescriptions and check when their medication review appointment is due. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821 333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive non-urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY! Our ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR will be held on SATURDAY 26 NOVEMBER. As this is our most popular event, Tables are highly sought after, and are on sale NOW! So please book early to avoid disappointment, as some have already been sold!

Opening Times: Wednesday to Saturday from 6:30pm Telephone: 01843 823 091 Mobile: 07731 662 864 Email: Website:

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB Minster Show will have come and gone by the time this is published, but once again Minster Bowls Club took part organising the catering in the pavilion, a bric-a-brac stall, and a recruitment stand. MINSTER AND MONKTON ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN’S SECTION To all members of the Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion Women’s Section. It is with great sadness the ‘Section’ will close from Friday 30 September 2016. This is our decision to close due to the uncertainty of our National status. We have made the decision as many branches have already closed, not wishing to become a District of the Royal British Legion. We have been in existence since 1921 and feel we have been put on the scrap heap. Anyone wishing to become a member must join the Royal British Legion, enquiries to the Club. We would like to thank you all for supporting us over the years to raise funds for Women’s Section Charities. From, Your Chairman and her Committee.

“Lady C’s Visit to Minster”

CALL TOM ON 01843 583 162

August 2016

“Lady Clarinet” was created by Romany at our Art Studio in Acol. Since the Studio opened in March 2016, we have given opportunities to children and young adults, who have additional communication and learning difficulties, to enter local and national Art Competitions. Romany was given the chance to enter the Minster Scarecrow Competition 2016. Over several Art Sessions Romany worked hard through some difficult processes to complete “Lady C” in time. Her confidence is growing with her creative ability. Through the competition Romany is also developing life skills such as working as part of a team, keeping to a schedule, completing artwork to a deadline as well as contributing to her local community.

Romany said “I was very happy to hear that I had won the Junior 1st prize for Lady C. I enjoyed taking part and walking around Minster with my Mum, looking at all of the other Scarecrows. Lady C is going to live at home with us.” Our Saturday club also enjoyed the visit to the Minster Scarecrow Competition. The student’s favourites were the Captain Hook and the Mermaid. Real activities like this wonderful community competition are valuable for the young people who attend the Art Studio at Sandra Art4All. We are an inclusive, creative, safe learning environment. We offer rewarding and realistic experiences through a purposeful and meaningful creative practice. In September 2016, we will be opening the after school Art Club and Childminding sessions. The small groups will be for a maximum of five children. We will be able to pick your child up from school and drop them home. The Art session can also include a homework club. Find us on Facebook.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking?

Minster Matters

My husband adores blackcurrants in any shape or form, and fortunately our garden produces masses of them, red, black and white, so I need a lot of recipes! This is one of my summer favourites from Claire MacDonald, which I have amended slightly because I prefer to sieve the purée to get rid of the pips. This also means you don’t have to pick the blackcurrants over particularly thoroughly when you use them! Frozen blackcurrants work equally well – do you have them insulating your freezer too? Blackcurrant and Mint Mousse 1lb/500g blackcurrants a good handful of mint leaves 3 large eggs, separated 6oz/175g caster sugar juice of 1 lemon 1 sachet of gelatine (or four leaves) ½ pint/300ml double cream softly whipped Put the blackcurrants in a saucepan, cover and simmer gently in their own juice until the currants are soft. Cool before adding the mint leaves and puréeing them in a food processor or blender. At this stage, I then sieve the purée before allowing it to cool completely. Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl, adding the caster sugar, and keep going until they are thick, pale and have increased in volume. Soften the gelatine with the lemon juice in a saucepan and heat until the gelatine has dissolved (if you use leaf gelatine, soften the gelatine in water, squeeze out and add to the heated lemon juice). Leave it until it has started to set (ie, coast the back of a metal spoon) and then fold in the whipped cream. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold them into the mousse using a metal spoon. I always put a tablespoonful in first to loosen the texture of the mousse before adding the rest. Pour into a serving bowl and chill until it is set. This can be made a day in advance, but is best eaten at room temperature. For more delicious recipes look at Upcoming Events

‘SPOT ZAC’ COMPETITION - NO WINNER AGAIN THIS MONTH !!! Here’s his picture so you know who to look for (He’s only about 150mm tall) Our competition for the youngsters who attend Minster and Monkton schools or Tadpoles has also got off to a very slow start, far he hasn’t been sighted at all although he isn’t hidden where he’s sat so you should find him wearing his MM t-shirt, in a local business (he’s still in the first business he visited!!). All you will have to do is find him and submit your answer to us, at the library, stating where you saw him, your age, your school and your address. Then whoever is drawn first from our bag will be our winner. The monthly prize will be a cash award of £5, so well worth entering.

Our September Production 2016 Our three one act plays are now cast and in rehearsal, and fun is being had with these amusing plays. The plays chosen this year are all comedies, one each by Alan Bennett, David Tristram, and Constance Cox. All three plays have a similar running time and will be presented with a short interval between each, to an audience seated at tables and invited to bring their own food and drink. There will be just two performances at the Village Hall on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th September at 7.30. Tickets are £8 per person for tables of up to eight people. Why not make up a table with your friends and come along and join the fun? The Box office is open on: 07501 894 381 or email: These are funny, insightful plays by top playwrights to be watched in a relaxed setting– do come and enjoy them. What’s next? With the One Acts in rehearsal it is time to look to this year’s pantomime which will be Cinderella. Auditions have been set for Thursday 18th August also at the Bell Inn at 7.30 so if you have any desire to be part of our panto team come along then – we look forward to seeing you.

Do your children want to take part in our next Pantomime? We are always looking for talented children of eight years of age or older who want to take a small onstage role in our pantomimes, and who can give up the time and commitment to rehearsals and the shows. Contact giving their name, age, and contact details, or bring them along to our panto audition, as above. Chaperones We like to have children in our pantomimes and they enjoy performing, but, like everyone else, we are subject to very strict rules about the care and safety of the children involved. This primarily involves us in providing chaperones for the children during performances. This is a simple duty and might be attractive to anyone who would enjoy the involvement with the Playhouse in this capacity. If you would be interested in chaperoning children for our productions please contact us – we look forward to hearing from you. An honour for one of our best-loved players In the Birthday Honours list this summer Steve Clement was honoured with an MBE for his work with the border service at home and abroad, and we congratulate him on this honour, along with his recent retirement, both so well deserved.

To make it safer for your family, save some pennies and help the environment in the process. I didn't know about alternatives that work as well as chemicals, but I have now learnt about Norwex. I live locally in Minster Parish and hold coffee mornings and parties in your home or business to speak about what most of us currently do in the home, because that's what we've been taught and conditioned to do.  I'll demonstrate alternatives to help you make small steps to a healthier life. Please give me a call or drop me an email if you interested to learn more.
