August 2011

Flowers by Vanessa EDITORIAL Bouquets, Baskets,Table decorations, Apologies before I start, if there are any glaring mistakes this Weddings or Funerals month then they are all mine. The busiest weekend in July (Show Created with the “Personal Touch” Weekend) my Co-Editor decides to book herself a holiday to For designs with a difference Ray PortaVentura and leaves me with it all to do - just wait, I’ll get my Vanessa Fairbrass own back later in the year. (C&G qualified florist) So with Saturday out of the equation and only one of me to do two Rose Cottage, Manor Road, peoples jobs in half the time, I spent all of Sunday and a good few St. Nicholas at Wade CT7 0NY hours of Monday getting it all together, so as I say, you may well find 01843 847 012 07934 420 837 Amy a few mistakes, for which I humbly apologise. I can deliver within Thanet & Canterbury 1P/5 What a great day Show Day was, nearly everything went like clockwork, or if it didn’t I wasn’t aware of it. The Show Committee and their valiant band of volunteers worked extremely hard from Friday evening through to Sunday morning, setting up and taking Brenda down. You’d be amazed at what goes on prior to and after the Show to make it a success. Thanks must go to all those who made it work, and also to Pat (Minster Window Company) Marsh for doing us the honours this year. He spent the whole Property Maintenance afternoon here and even asked if there was anything he could help Eve with just before he left. Thank you Pat, and thanks for all the radio Building Work plugs you gave us prior to the event, looking at the crowd it would Plastering * Rendering seem it had the desired effect. Did you come to the show, if so did you meet Mickey and uPVC Windows & Doors Minney? We thought for a while they weren’t going to make it as they uPVC Fascia, Soffits & Guttering Diane rang Karen from the M25, where they were ‘going nowhere’ and Repairs to existing double glazing much later they rang again to say they couldn’t get into the village as Misted up sealed units replaced the roads were closed, but thankfully they did eventually arrive and Garage Doors * Decking were a great hit with most of the youngsters, although I did see one or two who were unsure and one in particular had quite a few tears Nora outside our tent. Call on Most of the acts in the Showcase were really enjoyable, but the committee did have complaints about the language of one of the entertainers for which they apologised. Young Luke gave an outstanding performance and we all wish him the very best of luck in 2P/6 Sue his ambition to win X Factor 2011 - he needs your votes to help him succeed, so don’t forget to ring in when he’s on the TV. A.J.Cliffe & Sons Sadly we have had to move our ‘recording studio’ from the Holiday Inn and (Butchers) Ltd we will now be using our office in the library for this purpose. We thank HIE for all they have done for us in the past but we realise all good things must Homemade eventually come to an end, but it was good while it lasted. Sausages & Burgers The office is nearly ready to receive visitors but not quite, although I have done a lot of work in the past week or two to enable us to to use it for recording Don’t Forget Our purposes, there is still a bit to do before we’ll be fully operational, so I think I NEW BBQ PACKS can safely say we will hold over the official opening until the beginning of September. So watch the next issue for details of when that will be and pop Canterbury House, Monkton Road, Minster along for a cuppa with us (maybe something stronger but I’m still working on Tel: 01843 821288 1L/1 that !!) Disappointingly we are still inundated with reports of dog fouling, we even had a batch of pictures sent in of a particular problem in the main entrance to the Rec, but the team agreed we wouldn’t inflict them on our readers, however we say AGAIN - you never see dogs roaming alone, so there is no reason why there should be any fouling left on our footpaths, in the Rec, down Marsh Farm Road or along Sheriffs Court Lane. If you own a dog you are responsible for its actions, so CLEAN UP after it, leaving it for others to either step in or clear up for you, just isn’t 61, High St playing the game, and you should be ashamed of not doing off with our Minster your duty. To those who do ‘pick up’ please don’t hang it in a tree or throw it in/over a hedge, either put it in a dog bin or Tel: Junior Stylist a waste bin, or if you don’t pass one then take it home (it on production of this advert doesn’t bite !!) and deposit in your own bin. Thank you. 824000 2L/8 Well space has beaten me yet again, so - ‘Where’s Zac’ ?

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP (MINSTER) NON – RESIDENT SURGERY PATIENTS In the last issue of Minster Matters for July (No.127) a letter was published “From a concerned resident” concerning patients who live outside the village. Minster Surgery, being a rural practice, does have a wide catchment area, including the villages of Monkton, St Nicholas, Acol and Cliffsend. However, with reference to the other points raised by the writer, a full reply is published below this report. SURGERY TRAINING DAYS The Surgery will be closed, for the purpose of staff training, from mid-day onwards, on the following days: Tuesday 13th September Thursday 20th October Patients who need to see a Doctor during these times are requested to contact “Doctors on Call” via the usual surgery number – 821333. SEASONAL FLU VACCINATIONS As usual the vaccination program will be carried out during October, although the dates have yet to be finalised. Patients who are entitled to a vaccination will be contacted in due course and invited to make an appointment at the surgery. PATIENT LIAISON GROUP MEETING The last meeting was held on the 19th July and the next is scheduled for September. If you have any issues to raise or require further information on the topics raised, please contact; KEN SELF on 821200 or JEAN TAYLOR on 845072

Non-Resident Surgery Patients Dear Concerned Resident Thank you, for taking the time to express your concerns and I would like to respond to your letter that appeared in the last issue or Minster Matters (No.127 July). A large number of such patients are those from local families who originated from the village, and wished to remain with the surgery, which they have come to know and respect. Minster Surgery, being in a rural area, the villages of Monkton, St. Nicholas, Acol and Cliffsend fall within the catchment area of the practise and for example, the surgery runs a weekly clinic in St. Nicholas for those patients with restricted mobility. Also patients who become dissatisfied with their own surgery for whatever reasons, can ask to transfer to another, and as such, have been considered in the past, subject to guidelines laid down by the SE Coast PCT. However, this practise is currently under review. The Surgery appreciates some patients have difficulties in making appointments and are always looking at ways to improve the service to their patients. However, I would like to draw the writers’ attention to our newsletter on page 4 of the same issue (No.127) concerning missed appointments. One must agree that, with the high numbers involved, it makes alarming reading and is an area of concern. Ken Self Patient Liaison Group Minster Surgery

The Margate Museum FREE DAY OUT !!! With summer on its way and the children home from school for 6 long weeks it can be a strain emotionally and financially ,so it’s great to find a little gem of a day out which does not cost an arm and a leg. Margate might not be the first place you would think to visit, but apart from the stunning beach the old town is really coming into its own. As well as window shopping in the boutiques and a visit to all the little art galleries (not to mention the big art gallery on the sea front, which has free admission) a visit to the Margate Museum is a must. It has recently been re-opened after 2 years by a team of volunteers who have put together a fascinating collection of artefacts which will interest young and old alike. The building itself was used as the court for the trial of Mods and Rockers in the 1960’s and the cells where the prisoners were held are open for viewing. Admission is free, with quiz’s for children about Margate, the Museum building and the curios within it. Minster CEP school took their Year 2 pupils there recently and a great time was had by all, why not give it a try? Opening Times 11am -5pm Saturdays then 11am-5pm Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays in the summer holidays. Sue Greenstreet, MM Newshound (Co-Editor’s note: Having visited the museum recently I absolutely agree with Sue’s recommendation to this attraction and would like to give high praise to the volunteers who were extremely knowledgeable within their area of expertise. They managed to teach me quite a thing or two about Margate’s history - WELL WORTH A VISIT!)

“The Ironing Fairy”

On 26th June the Twinning trip to Armbouts-Cappel started early, with 36 people leaving Minster in the coach at 6.30 a m. A pleasant trip across the channel with a hearty breakfast was enjoyed by most people. Minster Carnival Court travelled with us, as well as some representatives of other Courts. When we arrived in Armbouts-Cappel at 11.45 a m, French time, the day’s planned activities had not started as we were a bit early, so we did not miss anything. The village entertainment started with their majorettes dancing and twirling batons. The sun came out and it got very hot. Lunch was laid on in the hall and we were entertained by a French duo and people were able to dance if they wanted. After lunch we went to the Mayor’s Parlour for the speeches and exchanging of gifts. We received a hamper full of local produce and we gave them a trophy, engraved with their coat of arms and our village sign, which is to be awarded annually for sporting achievements. Carol Bailey received a bouquet of flowers for all her hard work with the Carnival Court and the girls from the Court, in their beautiful new dresses, performed their traditional curtsey display to the Mayor and Councillors. By this time the village day was well under way with a fun fair and a talent competition in the hall. Our girls took part by singing and one young boy was an excellent singer, but we’ve yet to hear whether or not he won. We left at 5p m French time to catch our ferry. However, owing to its late arrival, we had a wait at Calais, but it had been a most enjoyable day out. We are now planning a quiz night and a race night so watch this space for another opportunity to support the cause and have some fun at the same time. A diary date for next year is 27 May 2012 when the French will be visiting us. If you would like to attend our next committee meeting, you will be most welcome at The Royal British Legion Club at 7.45 p m on Wednesday 10 August 2011.

KENT TRADING STANDARDS An East Kent resident received a telephone call from “a foreign sounding man” claiming to be from a government department, advising that as the resident paid their Council Tax and did not have a criminal record they were entitled to a reward of £5000 to £7000 through a new “Good Citizen Scheme”. The caller told the consumer that in order to release the money they needed to pay £299.00 via PayPoint. The caller then directed the resident to their nearest PayPoint outlet. Fortunately the resident knew this was a scam and did not carry out the caller’s request, despite numerous subsequent telephone calls received from the bogus caller chasing the payment. August 2011 Thank you’s and messages....

Thank you … Wendy and Jac in the school office wish to say a BIG THANK YOU to all our wonderful children and parents for the many gifts and cards we’ve received. Congratulations to the Minster Carnival Court Well done for winning 1st Float and 3rd Court at Dover Carnival, and a special WELL DONE for winning Court of the Day at Teynham. We can also report the ‘Girls’ did us proud on their recent visit to France and it has reached our ears that Clara and Kizzie made a very brave attempt to sing ‘In The Jungle’ in French, which we are reliably informed was ‘interesting’ to say the least. Well Done Girls, you are great ambassadors for our village.

June’s meeting started with a fantastic presentation from Michael Andrews about his VSO (Voluntary Services over Seas) experience in Papua New Guinea.. Michael retired from teaching children with special needs and wanted to do something purposeful with his retirement. From the outset Michael’s talk had the WI members captivated, he spoke in Pidgin English to introduce himself. A colourful portrayal of life in Papua New Guinea and it’s inhabitants followed, accompanied by photographs captured over the two years that he was there. Not only is Minster Salvation Army celebrating its 125th anniversary but also rejoicing in the appointment of the new officers, Captains Bryn and Lyn Hargreaves, to replace Major Denise Cooper who left at the end of last year (Majors Richard and Valerie Hope who have been temporarily in charge have returned to retirement once again). Captain Bryn grew up and attended the Salvation Army at Connah’s Quay Corps in North Wales, which, incidentally was Major Val’s first appointment in 1966. Captain Lyn was introduced to the Army at the age of 10 years old and was at Rugby Corps in the Midlands until she met Captain Bryn at a national event for young people. They were married 30 years ago and have been blessed with 3 wonderful children and at the last count now have 5 beautiful grandchildren. They entered the Salvation Army’s William Booth College in 1997, where each new year’s intake receives a unique name, and trained to be officers as part of the ‘Faithful Intercessors’ session. Prior to coming to Minster they served at Barrow-in-Furness, Tunstall and, for the past seven years, at Gillingham. They said that they wanted ‘To greet you all in the name of Christ and say how pleased we are to be appointed to Minster Corps’. There is only one scheduled change to activities in August. On the 21st at 5.30 pm we shall be joining at Cliff’s End Church for an open air ’Songs of Praise’. Richard Hope, Major

Can You Find Us A Home ? Sid and Tommo came to the Woodchurch Centre from a multi-cat household last September. The other cats from the household have now found good homes but Sid and Tommo are still looking. They were underweight and quite nervous, having never been out or played with toys, but are steadily gaining confidence and are now friendly and affectionate. They both have slight heart murmurs but are not on any medication and only need to be checked once a year, by a vet, when they have their vaccinations. They need a quiet home with no children where they can be the centre of attention and love.

Zac’s Musings Most disappointed this past weekend, when on visiting the Minster Show I wasn’t even recognised by some. Maybe I need a bigger picture !

Eileen tells us had a wonderful day when she attended the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on the 12th July. Although she didn’t get to meet the Queen she did see both her and the Duke of Edinburgh very close up. There were other members of the Royal Family at the party as well. Eileen thought it delightful drinking tea and eating cucumber sandwiches and other tasty bites, in such distinguished company and felt very honoured to be there.

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE The following matters were raised at the Parish Council meeting on 5th July: 1. Planning/Development a. 13 Augustine Road development has been refused on the grounds of over-development. b. The Chief Executive of Manston Airport will meet with the Parish Council to discuss the airport’s development. The current 106 agreement still stands but a new agreement will be submitted by Infratil to TDC. 2. Events a. It was agreed that Public opinion would be sought as to what event the Parish Council should be involved in for the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations. It was noted that events should be co-ordinated in the Parish and perhaps with other local parishes. 3. Warden’s Report a. A silver mountain bike was stolen from the front of the Library b. There is a trip hazard on the Tarmac outside the Indian Takeaway and this will be addressed by Highways c. Door-to-Door sales persons have been reported to their Company because of their conduct and pressured sales techniques. d. There has been a burglary where entry was gained through open patio doors – the Warden asked for residents to be particularly vigilant during the hot weather. 4. Other Business a. Speed checks have taken place in the village on Tothill Street and Monkton Road. Surprisingly, there was little evidence of speeding on Tothill Street. b. The Parish Council is investing in interactive signs for the village to assist with this issue. 5. Date of Next Meeting September 6th - No Meeting in August 6. Minutes of all meetings can be found at the Parish Council website

It has recently come to our attention that, sadly, our church is now having to be kept locked, due to vandalism and damage caused by a minority in our community. Now we have visitors who are unable to view the interior of our beautiful church except when a keyholder or the Vicar are in attendance. Such a shame. Let us hope matters can soon be put right and those responsible are dealt with appropriately, then once again we may be able to access to the church without having to inconvenience another to have it unlocked. It would be a real shame if we cannot get back to the way we were, with uncontrolled access available to all when the church wasn’t in use. 1L/7

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS - DOCUMENTARY - CHANNEL 4 Britain’s best decorated houses at Christmas - Channel 4 are trawling the country for people who love nothing more than decking their houses with lights and illuminated ornaments at Christmas. We are developing a documentary for Channel 4 which will be a fun and light-hearted look at this popular British Yuletide pastime. We are trying to make contact with as many Parish and Town Councils as possible to see if : A) they run local, annual competitions and B) if there are any houses or streets in their communities that are famed for their decorations. An Englishman’s home is his castle. And some, at Christmas time, like nothing more than lighting up their castles with thousands of lights, flashing Santas and reindeer, and even synchronised music. Job Vacancy

VACANCY FOR CLERK TO MONKTON PARISH COUNCIL A vacancy will soon exist for a Parish Clerk to Monkton Parish Council. The hours and salary are negotiable. Currently the clerk would be expected to work from home around 8 hours per week, but this is flexible. This is an immensely rewarding and interesting position, requiring a number of interpersonal and administrative skills, giving the successful applicant plenty of scope to contribute something really useful to the Village community. Whilst some previous experience would be an asset it is not essential. Computer literacy is a requirement and an ability to operate a small Village web site effectively. The job includes dealing with the financial side of the Parish council matters and generally assisting the Parish councillors to carry out their responsibilities. This position may suit an existing Parish Clerk looking to increase their overall hours. For an informal discussion, please contact: John Way (Chairman, Monkton Parish Council) Tel no 01843 823063, or write, enclosing a copy of your CV, to: 10 Monkton Manor, Monkton, Ramsgate, Kent CT12 4JT. The closing date will be Saturday August 13th, 2011, interviews for this position will take place later in August.

“But They Can’t” – They Did On Monday June 7th from around 8.30am onwards, a number of Families found their world crashing around them – or so they thought. Our lollipop lady was given the third degree, and couldn’t answer the question fast enough. “What”, How! Why? When! “But I’m the Lollipop Lady, and I walk from Monkton”. She replied. The reason became clear, parents had been warned, but didn’t believe it. The roads around Buttsfield estate to the school were closed for resurfacing. Children and Adults HAD TO WALK from Taylor Road to the School. “It’s like the Olden days” one child was heard to say. (The 30 something’s, many of whom I remember walking to school, are now “The Olden Days”). Not everyone was unhappy; around 9.30am one well known recycled teenager was finding life very enjoyable, with roads out of action he was cycling on the pavement in St. Mary’s Road, no cars, and a huge grin on his face. As he cycled in Molineux Road one of his contemporaries called out “get off the pavement”. A roar of laughter was heard. Life in Molineux Road would never be quite the same again! (name withheld)
