Jessica Silver - 9 Ever willing to help our neighbours we are publishing the following Press Release CLIFFSEND SHOP from Storage cupboard to Community Hub The smiling faces and friendly service in Cliffsend Shop and post office belies the great struggle this little shop has had just to survive over the past 9 years. The shop is run entirely by volunteers and is non profit-making. Keeping it local is at the heart of the shop committee members, who encourage local producers and suppliers wherever possible. Many local residents may use the shop from time to time for emergency milk or a forgotten birthday card but for the elderly population of Cliffsend it is an essential service, not only for groceries but for daily contact and a friendly chat. In 2001 the original village shop closed in Cliffsend due to retirement. Local residents saw the social gap left by the closure of the shop and formed the Cliffsend Shop Association, aimed at keeping the post office and shop open in the village. Originally there were 340 members. The members raised funds through regional agencies, local businesses, amongst themselves and also gained support from Post Office HQ. This speedy action resulted in the new post office and shop opening just two weeks after the old one shut. It’s new location being a converted storage cupboard in Cliffsend Village Hall. Between 2002 and 2004 further substantial funds were raised by the Shop Association and in 2004 building work commenced to extend the village hall, provide a larger walk in shop and provide disabled access to the PO, shop and village hall. Run by the postmistress the new shop thrived with many volunteers to hand. In 2007 the Post Office announced its intention to close Cliffsend PO as part of a nationwide plan to close 2,500 local post offices. A local campaign in Cliffsend swung into action to

Association are putting out an urgent appeal. All offers of help, from ordering, stocktaking, cleaning, serving behind the counter would be most welcome. If you have just a couple of hours spare and feel like doing something for your local community as well as making some new friends then please call one of the committee members on 01843 595775 or 01843 582118. It would be a great pity for this asset to Cliffsend to have to close; it is unique in its setup and invaluable in its contribution to village life.

MINSTER SHOW 2010 This years show proved another success for the committee up until the final knockings, when members of the public were heard to complain quite loudly about the entrance fee, and why was it held on such a popular weekend when so much else is happening in the local area. Well, where do I start, the show has always been held on the penultimate Saturday in July, long before anything else ever happened in the area, so why should they change the date? Secondly it costs an awful amount of money to stage the show, most of which are unseen expenses, such as insurance and the like. The marquee and toilets also sets them back a very tidy sum along with the cost of overnight security cover for same. Where else can you get such a great afternoons entertainment for so little ? Ray - Editor Letter from the Minster Show Vice Chairman After 124yrs the future of the Show is looking grim. After the village and a committee of 10 people pulled together and put on such a fantastic show the whole event was ruined by an unruly bunch of adolescents, stealing property, drinking, running across the roof of the marquee and performing unsightly sexual acts on same until around 4am Sunday morning. The committee will be meeting in August to discuss these issues and take a decision on to whether the show will be abandoned for 2011, our 125th anniversary, and for future years, unless the parents and offenders can offer a solution to these problems. Any contributions for the Committee to consider to Karen Brazil (Attwells Newsagents) Vice Chairman

August 2010 EDITORIAL Firstly the good news, I have had my operation and I’m well on the road to recovery albeit I wasn’t allowed to drive for 3 weeks, so I’ve done plenty of walking (that’ll surprise some of you, I know !!) . Still no heavy lifting, for another 9 weeks or so, but that won’t stop me doing most things, except of course making the bulk deliveries of this issue, which most of my good lady team members are doing for me, and I really thank them for this. Had one day out with the new gazebo at Open Gardens but injured my hand and got so cold I decide one was quite enough this year. Also had it out again at the Show ( the gazebo, that is !), thanks mainly to Snappy’s family erecting it along with my better half, where we got to talk to an awful lot of people, from both here and outside of the village who really seemed to like our magazine. We even got praised by the IOT Gazette photographer, so we must be doing something right. We’ve heard of a bit of tea-leafing in and around the village just lately, not the least of which was at the Show where they had a brand new strimmer stolen from the marquee which was one of the prizes in the Grand Draw, let’s hope whoever stole it gets their comeuppance. I’m sure those of you who have been in Bens since his reopening were as amazed as I was at the transformation, however it will take those with sight difficulties some time to get used to the completely changed layout, let’s hope they get help if they need it. I’ve heard a funny story about our Community Warden and PC Burgess holding up a wall, which we may have more to tell you about next month. Let’s say for now that if you’ve seen either of them leaning on a wall just lately it wasn’t because they’d had a few too many or that they were feeling tired or ill, they were actually trying to stop it falling over !! Well being short of space this month that I’m afraid is it !! Just enough space to ask my usual question Where’s Zac today?

The Lonely Geese. - 14th December 2008 - 3p.m. As I stood at the gates, peering through the bars. My thoughts again went a-wandering away very far. Remembering the laughter and the warmth that one felt inside. Yes, beyond the barrier of the newly painted gates, one did not need a guide. All sorts of merriment could be found not far from where I stand. At this moment in time, though, I can see first hand. The Geese are lonely, they call out to me.. As they step from the pond, their webbed feet do I see. They must miss the children’s laughter, and all the fun. For sure I do, and I’m not the only one. There are no prizes for guessing my situation at this time. The date nearing the end of 2008, soon be 2009. Why, oh! why, did this delightful place have to close. Well, that’s life, one would say, I suppose. I will end by stating the name in case you need to know. Yes, Minster Rural Museum, where the Lonely Geese just said “hello” Yvonne Chapman

From Keith The Milkman Many thanks to all my friends and customers in Minster for your kind messages of support and "get well soon" cards. They were a great source of comfort to me. Also many thanks to Attwells for having a collection for me in the shop, and thank you to all who contributed. I look forward to when I can return to work, as soon as possible, hopefully sometime in October/November. Take care everyone, love Keith

From Ben, Londis Ben would like to thank all his customers for their patience and understanding whilst the shop has been closed. He hopes that you will all find that it has been worthwhile and that you enjoy the experience of using the new look store.

From Brenda, MM Team THANK YOU - to everyone who helped me survive a nasty fall in Minster. I am very lucky that my eye has healed so well and quickly, obviously due to the cold compresses swiftly administered in Attwells and the drink and toast in the Gossip Shop. I am now back to my “old” self.

From Minster Parish Council We would like to report that the National Census is to be held on 27th March 2011. This matters to everyone who lives within Minster. Census population estimates/informs the allocation of resources to policy making and service planning at national and local level. That is to say that the information gathered allows for the government to provide for and fund the services that a community requires. Census information is strictly confidential.

Wheels For Ralph On Wednesday 9th June, 53 weeks after the appeal was launched Ralph took delivery of a newly adapted vehicle, equipped with tail-lift, specialist seat belts, tinted windows, and electrical sockets for vital medical equipment.. This would not have been possible without the generosity of many people, those who have either donated, supported fund raising events or given their time for free. The vehicle was supplied by Lewis Reed who understood Ralph’s immediate need and offered to supply the vehicle, on receipt of a substantial deposit and, with the opportunity to pay the outstanding £12,000 over the next 5 years. So there is still a long way to go and much fundraising to do. Ralph, his family and all the fundraising team cannot thank everyone enough for all that has been done to make this possible. Thank you from Sarah, Ralph and “The Wheels for Ralph” team. The content of this note was gleaned, just before we went to print, from the notice board at Rivers Court, as we were disappointed not to have received anything official, from the appeals team, for publication.

August 2010 Thank you’s ...... Psychic Fayre

Just a note to thank all of you in Minster who helped us raise money for Charity at our Psychic Fayre in June. We had a good day and although less people attended than we had hoped we still managed to send a substantial amount to three non-government funded Charities, including Foals & Horses in Oswaldtwistle whom we have been helping for some 10 years or more now. Many thanks to all of you who took posters for us and for Eric at the Hall who helped us with all the setting up of the stalls. We have another Fayre booked for November 21st and look forward to meeting some of you again then, and we thank you in advance for taking our posters ! One last thing. Some of you may have been aware that my colleague Malcolm no longer attends my events. This is because he has decided to set up on his own now, and we at Northdown Centre wish him all the best with his venture and hope he finds what he is looking for. Once again, thank you Minster! August 2010 PLANTING CONTINUES AT THE DEVILS ELBOW Many of you will have heard about, or indeed visited the private woodland at the Devil’s Elbow in Monkton Road. Although private, the woodland can be visited as part of a number of community events, such as Open Gardens, the Annual Strawberry Tea or by appointment with the owner Dennis Neville. Groups of children from Minster School regularly visit as part of their environmental studies. This Spring we have planted a substantial number of young hedgerow plants, predominantly Hazel, to replace a very old Hawthorne boundary hedge that had died out some time ago. Over the first few years of growth the plants will receive a small amount of trimming until they reach the optimum size for the hedge to be “layed”. This is an ancient craft that was devised to create a hedge that remained thick at its base and thus stock proof. There is very little evidence of hedge laying in the Thanet area, indeed it is a craft that almost died out countrywide, but fortunately has gone through a revival in many parts of rural Britain, especially on some of the large country parks and estates. The main reason for us creating this type of hedge at the Devil’s Elbow, as with the woodland, is to provide another form of habitat for a range of insects, birds and small mammals. Paul Willins, Parish Tree Warden

The picture shows Paul (giving himself a bad back! ably assisted by Roger Thompson, our village Bee guru, on his knees), busy planting “Hazel Whips” at the Devil’s Elbow.

The July speaker was Terry McCormick from Kent Police, who gave us an informative talk on crime prevention, safety in the home, and Neighbourhood Watch. The Bat and Trap evening (complete with fish and chip supper) against Ramsgate Townswomen's Guild was enjoyed by all who took part. Short of numbers, the inexperienced TWG team borrowed some of our best players to even up the numbers which resulted in a win for them. We look forward to a return match, when we might not be so generous! In the Group round of the WI's Top Team Quiz, Minster came a very close third. Several members took part in a Treasure Hunt around Whitstable, and came second: well done to them. It has given us 'food for thought' for a similar event in Minster next year. There are no meetings in August, the next being on 14th September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, when Don Wilks will be showing some of his beautiful photographs. Visitors and new members will be made welcome.

A good time was had by all 17 villagers attending the Ducasse in Armbouts on 27th June. There were 5 marching bands involved in a small competition. The French hosts asked our Carnival Court to make presentations to them and they were pleased to carry this out. There was also participation in the parade. As usual drinks, nibbles and lunch were generously supplied and thoroughly enjoyed. There was a fun fair and a very happy atmosphere in general. Hopefully our visitors will enjoy the Minster Show as much. Our next meeting is not until September but please feel free to approach any committee member with thoughts and offers.

Midwives to Ethiopia Kate Humphreys and Mary Lord would like to thank all those who supported the "Health for All" Coffee Morning on 26th June either through donation, attendance or both! The event was blessed with glorious weather plus an abundance of goods for sale. These included clothing, produce and cakes, also dozens of tombola prizes. ÂŁ600 was raised on the day, enough to buy a generator for one of the many rural health clinics in the Tigray region of Ethiopia where operations and childbirth are currently conducted by candlelight! Backpacks will also be supplied to trainee birth assistants in that area, with the basic kit required for their work. Many of these use bicycles to reach their patients. The packs will be awarded at the end of an instructional course designed and presented by volunteer midwives from East Kent, who travel in their own time and usually at their own expense. When I moved here over three years ago, it was lovely, living right next to the Church it took a bit of getting used to, the bells in the Church going every 15 minutes, but like living next to a railway station or an airport, you get used to it and it doesn't bother you. Why then have the chimes stopped every 15 minutes???? I really miss them. It feels like I've moved to the Clock tower in Margate when the clock only strikes the hour. How boring. Is this a cutback - I don't know if it costs to have them chiming every 15 minutes or has someone complained. Come on, it's a village, lets keep it that way. If you don't like the bells chiming on a church, don't move next to one, common sense isn't it. Bring back the bells please. Liz Newstead, Morton's Fork.

Minster Bowls Club. The highlight for the past month was seeing all the village teams, plus others from just outside of our boundary, enjoying and competing in a sport that they don't play, and all for charity. Johnathan Cole the Sponsor for the day was pleased to meet all those taking part on a happy occasion. The Cup winners, Paul Gare, George Harris, Stanley Gare, & Martin Harris donated their £300 to Delmelza House. The Plate winners, Ali Manning, Oli Barnes, Jack Northrop & Finlay Manning donated their winnings to Harris Team wins the Cup a children’s hospice. Our grateful thanks to Johnathan of W.S.Cole &Son for his generosity and presentation of the cup. Thanks also to all the various teams supporters, our visitors, and even one of our Village Ward Councillors, Mike Roberts, all of whom were present on the day. The Manholes win the The County Cox Cup competition saw a win for the club in the first round against Broadstairs. Good luck in the next round. Whilst Len Cooper with partner Sylvie Pritchard won the Snow Cup at Margate. Of the 19 games played we have won 14 drawn 2, one was rained off and two were cancelled. Our team in the Premier League are 5th, whilst the Combination League shows we have teams in both 4th and 9th position. Last month’s mistake: apologies to Margaret and Jacqui, l didn't realize it was a triples match at Ash. We had other successes but as details were not given to me by either the players or their supporters our praise could not be given this month. We still have both ladies & men in competitions, best of luck to you all. G.H.

August 2010 HAITI HELP UPDATE Back in March when I asked the ladies of Minster if they could help me knit 100 vests for Haiti, I was a bit optimistic. How wrong I was, help poured in not only from Minster, but all over Thanet, Herne Bay, Canterbury, even one lady in Soham, Cambridgeshire wanted to help. I have been overwhelmed by your kindness and have met so many nice people. Thank you all so much. On July 15th Bob Prebble from Thanet Lions collected everything you have donated. The final count is :396 Vests, 158 other jumpers etc, 302 Hats, scarves and gloves 27 blankets, 3 duvets-bedding 2 Sewing machines and 1 knitting machine 3 Bikes and 12 sacks of soft toys BRILLIANT! My initial plan was to knit for orphans in Haiti, but despite all my efforts and other people who have tried on my behalf, it seems impossible to get aid out there. The USA are in charge and they only want money. Bob of the Thanet Lions was the only one to offer help and I know these garments will go to orphans who have nothing, and without people like us sending help, would not survive. I am sure that like me you won’t mind where they go as long as they keep some small child warm. Bob will do his best to try to get some to Haiti, but cannot guarantee it. If you wish to keep knitting I will pass them on, BUT no more vests please. Thank you all so much. Gwen Hibbert Note from Glynne : Now looking for a new hobby for Gwen - Housework!!

COUNCILLORS HAVE TEA WITH THE QUEEN Tuesday 20th June was my birthday, and so Mike and I took tea with the Queen! Yes it was actually my birthday, and Mike Roberts, as Vice Chairman of TDC, had been invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace on that date - a nice coincidence! ALSO 2 days later, County Councillor Charles Hibberd and his wife, Ena, were invited along to another Buckingham Palace garden party. So that is one of the Villages District Councillors, and the Villages County Councillor both being honoured by Palace invitations in the same season. This proves conclusively that there is more to Thanet than Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs - but then we always knew this. Regards, Jo Roberts

Local Villages & Surrounding Area Airports - Long Distance Your August invitation to a haunted landscape, where you investigate the crime Wheelchair Facilities 13, 15-20, 22 August. (No Saturday Performances) @ 8pm.

What happens when innovative theatre and stately homes meet? Human remains, murder, and a promenade theatre performance that uses the grounds of Quex Park to unfold the grisly story. Fireraisers arrive on Thanet in a blaze of mystery. Auditions have been held, rehearsals are beginning and new sightings of an old character pave the way for the biggest summer theatre event to take place on the island for many years. Whether she is invited or not it seems the White Lady of Quex is once again walking the woodlands between the three towers of the estate. Woodsman Ron said ‘New paths have been trodden through the undergrowth. I can’t explain exactly how they got there, and I am not sure I want to know.’ He is not the only one talking about Fireraisers. Lord Richard Attenborough said about the company: “I love theatre – I love invention. I love people who are prepared to risk everything. Fireraisers really are venturing, really are pushing the boat out. It’s unique.” Box office at Theatre Royal and at the museum: £10 adults £7.50 Concessions. (Suitable for 12+)

Dear Editor, I am always extremely grateful to the huge number of people who go out of their way to help me and other blind and partially sighted people cross the road. We are very lucky that so many people care. I wish the same could be said for many motorists. While the vast majority of motorists tend to park sensibly and within the law, there are so many who do not have any consideration for others. Disabled people often find that they face a difficult obstacle course wherever they go throughout the village. There are cars, vans and lorries parked on pavements and road junctions. They even park on or in front of tactile paving. Disabled people do not have a chance. the village warden has no legal powers, although I would like to think that he would report illegal parking to the police. However, when I have telephoned the police myself, they do not get back to you to tell you if they have taken any action. I would therefore appeal to all motorists and road users to think of other people, especially the disabled, whenever you park your vehicle. It might help if you wonder what it would be like if you yourself were disabled. Yours faithfully, Gerry Glover Note from Editor: For those who are unaware what tactile paving is, in this village it is the bobbly paving that has been put down at the centre of some of the dropped kerbs to enable those who are blind or partially sighted to know where the low kerb is, blocking the dropped kerbs also hinders the disabled who use these to access the road crossing points with their disability scooters. Please keep them clear !!!!!

Pip, Squeak and Wilfred was a long-running British newspaper strip cartoon published in the Daily Mirror from 1919 to 1956, as well as the Sunday Pictorial in the early years. It was conceived by Bertram Lamb, who took the role of Uncle Dick, signing himself (B.J.L.) in an early book, and was drawn until c.1939 by Austin Bowen Payne who always signed as A.B. Payne. It concerned the adventures of an orphaned family of animals. Pip, who assumed the father role, was a dog, while the Mother, Squeak, was a penguin. Wilfred was the young child and was a rabbit with very long ears.

The WLOG Fan Club In 1927, the Pip, Squeak and Wilfred club began. It was named the Wilfredian League of Gugnuncs (WLOG) and organised many competitions and events for the thousands of members, especially at the British South Coast Seaside resorts. Gugnuncs is a combination of 2 baby-talk words used by Wilfred, who as a toddler-aged child cannot speak yet. Nunc being his version of Uncle. There was a WLOG member's badge in blue enamelled metal (see pic right), featuring the long ears of Wilfred. Among the WLOG rules was one to never eat rabbit. Of local interest - Bertram (Bertie) Lamb lived in Chestfield, whilst Austin Bowen Payne lived in Herne Bay. A. B. Payne was a long-time resident of Herne Bay, spending the last 20 years of his life living in Sea View Road. He gave the drawings to his friend Irene Hyde two years before his death and they remained in her family until later sold of at auction and purchased by Canterbury City Council. Pip, Squeak and Wilfred even spawned their own society, The Wilfredian League of Gugnuncs, which attracted 100,000 members in the first 10 weeks. This had a secret password “Ick, Ick, Pahboo?” to which the reply was “Goo, Goo, Pahnunc!”

Special Edition Schoolscript Focuses on

BULLYING As a special edition a Year 6 member of Journalist club suggested that we should focus on bullying. It was agreed that this was a good idea; here are some thoughts and feelings about this sensitive subject from some of our children at Minster CEP. Wendy Stone, Minster Primary School Headteacher There have been reports of bullying in Minster School on Lifestyles and Religious faiths and people have been sitting on people and being nasty. After a five day trip to Hindleap people had changed, some for the better and some for the worst as they have been nasty. I am that girl and this has actually happened to me. Even though there have been good times like with Mrs Paine, Mrs Pantelli, Miss Jackson, Mr Wookey, Mr Packer, Mrs Hogben, Mrs Quinney, Mrs Newgreen, Mrs Beale, Mrs Vinson and Mrs Barnes. These are people who have helped and are very jolly. The Office Staff are always smiling. By Alice Bullying is a very bad thing. There lots of different types of bullying and none of them are very nice. At our school we are really lucky because there are lots of people that can help us if we have problems. If your getting bullied or have problems with your friends it’s very important to tell someone because its hard to keep it all inside ! If you make friends with the person it’s VERY important to say sorry. So don’t keep it all in side and don’t bully other people !!!!! By Molly. Bullying is a thing that is very mean and yet very common. There are many different types of bullying such as cyber bullying etc. Minster is a very good school for dealing with bullying because they have mentors who can help you if you are being bullied or if you have a problem with one of your friends. I was having problems with my friends and I kept it to myself but it got so hard I had to tell someone and one day that is what I did. I told Mrs Elks and she gave me lots of good advice but before she told me I knew I had to tell my parents and when i did it felt like a weight had been lifted of my shoulders and within a matter of days it was sorted out. I am writing this to inform you that if you are being bullied do not keep it bottled up as it made me feel even worse. And if you tell some one you can now be a very happy girl or boy just like me. The Summer Reading Challenge is an immensely popular and successful reading initiative. Now in its twelfth year it reaches 725,000 children aged four to 12 years annually via the UK library network. It is created and run by The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to inspire more people to read more, and is supported by children’s publishers. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge.

Minster Matters BULLYING Continued from Page 19

August 2010 I had an incident were I fell out with my friend. Then I went to Mrs Elks and Miss Wood and they sorted it out for me. It is really good we have mentors in school and people we can turn to. Thank you. By Lori

When I was having problems, I kept it to myself for a very long time. When I was in year 4, I came out of school crying, my Dad had had enough. He went into school and spoke to Mrs Stone. A couple of days later, I saw Mrs Elks and she sorted everything out by forming a friendship club. We played games that taught us about teamwork. Bulling is when people are mean to you constantly. Now I come out of school smiling. Bulling is not a very nice experience. It can make you By Lia not want to come to come to school. People should always be sorry If they bully other people. If people bully you they are probably upset about something that happens to them. You should tell an adult if you feel like you are being bulled. People that bully may even have been bullied themselves. NO-ONE should be bullied When you are not being bullied you will be happy_!!!!!!!!!!! By Penny When I started in year 3 I had problems making new friends so I went to the mentors and explained what kept happening they found some nice friends for me to play with, I have problems on the playground with my friends, Now I have lots of friends to play with . that to me is really upsetting and I go to Mrs. Elks or Now I know that if I need help I should go to a mentor Mrs. Newgreen and that really helps me and I don’t because they will help me with all my problems. feel that upset anymore.
