Ageless Thanet We are delighted to announce that our next group of FREE Wellbeing Activities will be starting at the end of April! Our activities are aimed at people aged 50+ living in Thanet, who may feel lonely, or would like to improve their physical or mental health. The workshops take place in easily accessible venues across Thanet, and run for a period of 8 weeks. We have lots of exciting activities on offer such as Art, Pottery and many more! The Wellbeing Activities will introduce you to like-minded people, as well as having the opportunity to try something new. This is what one participant of our Wellbeing Activities has said of their experience: “I had not socialised for a good few years, and I found the prospect daunting. However, it soon became clear that we were all there for the same reasons, to make new friends, and to try something new. Everyone was so friendly, and I’m so pleased I went along, it has helped me enormously.” So, if you or someone you know feel that they would benefit from taking part in one of Ageless Thanet’s activities, please call 01843 296 687 to find out more information. Spaces are limited, so booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.

KEEPING YOU SAFE FROM SCAMS By PCSO 56550 Adrian Butterworth

Welcome to my crime prevention advice slot. This month I would like to draw your attention to cold callers. This is where someone appears at your door offering to do work on your property. They will usually say that they are working locally and have noticed something wrong with your roof or guttering. This is followed by a sales pitch where they will offer to do the work there and then at a really good price. These persons usually target bungalows and areas with an elderly population. They rely on the fact that a lot of older persons worry about the condition of their houses and would not want them falling into disrepair. The work is usually quoted at one price and then after the job is done the price has risen dramatically. It is not just roof sometimes it is drives that are being worked on. They offer to do the job in a couple of days when it would normally take weeks to do it properly. If you have one of these types of visits politely tell them you are not interested and seek advice from a reputable trader if you are concerned by what you have been told. Legally they should give you a cooling off period to think things over before starting work and give you a chance to pull out. These persons just want your money and will not offer this and do a shoddy job. BEWARE. On a lighter note I will be holding a Community surgery at Minster Library on the first Thursday of every month between 14:00 and 15:00 if you wish to come and speak to me. There is no such thing as a silly question so please come along.

ZAC’S MUSINGS Who ordered that white stuff? I’m shaky enough on my old pins now without it being like glass underfoot, Brrr, don’t need anymore of that, thank you very much. Mind you we’ve also had a few sunny days and it’s great to spread myself out across the carpet to soak up the rays, I love the sun, more of that please! The old boy has had quite a few nights on the sofa with me of late, not sure if he thinks I’m too poorly to leave on my own or if he’s just fallen asleep and forgotten to go to bed! I do know he takes most of the sofa! I have noticed he appears a lot less stressed since Amy came onboard as co-editor taking on the layout of the pages and saving us here at home from lots of heavy sighing and the odd bit of ‘blue’ air, life is almost normal again now, so thank you Amy.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION On Saturday 10 March we held a very successful Quiz Night at the RBL. Thanks go out to the Legion, Ian Munday, Christine Lynch, Kathryn and the bar staff for looking after 120 people throughout the evening. The winning team, led by Roy Burden, were victors by just 1 point and their winning bottles were accepted with enthusiasm and surprise! Who’s up for the challenge to beat them at the next quiz on Saturday 9 June? As mentioned before, don’t be disappointed if you leave your booking until just two weeks beforehand, because we had the upsetting task of declining some requests to join in as we were over-subscribed. More details of our next quiz in the May issue. We are having a lot of interest shown for our next Bingo Night on Saturday 14 July, so again keep your eyes peeled for full details in May. Sunday 11 March, ten of us went to ArmboutsCappel for the opening ceremony of their Arts and Crafts Exhibition where we found a beautiful display of our English exhibits. Eight of us decided to stay overnight in Ypres to witness the Last Post at the Menin Gate and this Arts proved to be a & Crafts moving ceremony. The following day, we visited an openMenin Gate air museum, the sight of which brought it home to us, just how awful war was. Plans are still ongoing for our 20th Anniversary May Ball. More photos on the website or - Please ‘like’ our page and keep up to date.

Minster Parish Council Meetings Summary of Key Points

● The Chairman thanked councillors for assisting in clearing the old archives at the Pavilion, and informed the meeting that we are still awaiting a new date from Savills for the exhibition regarding the proposed development to the west of Greenhill Gardens. (We now know it will

6th, March, 2018 ● PCSO Adrian Butterworth reported 34 calls to the Minster area in the last month, including theft from the Co-Op in Tothill Street, theft from a vehicle, damage, snowball throwing, domestic problems and a number of calls regarding the travellers who had arrived in Ebbsfleet Lane. He has maintained a regular presence at the school in the mornings and afternoons and this has helped to reduce some of the parking problems; unfortunately, some drivers still choose to ignore the yellow lines putting their own and others’ children at risk. The TDC enforcement office have added this location to their list for attendance.

be 28th March.) ● An update was given on a recent meeting with KCC Highways; their engineers are going to consider our requests for speed reduction when approaching and leaving the roundabout at the top of Tothill Street, improved warning signs on the eastern approach to the roundabout, new gateway signs when entering the village and additional yellow lines in various areas. The new passing place/layby in Laundry Road has been completed.

● County Cllr. Emma Dawson reported that KCC have confirmed that current bus services (39,42,56) will not change at present. There will be further consultations in April and May and a pilot scheme is running elsewhere in Kent using a phone app to provide a 24/7 service and the use of virtual bus stops. (Beam me up, Scottie?!)

● The meeting agreed the minutes of the recent Operations Meeting, which included plans for maintenance work at the cemetery, including re-surfacing a section of pathway, consideration of barriers on the top road to prevent fly tipping, and consideration of suggested locations for the planting of trees within the Parish. Any ideas, please?

● Cllr. Dawson has provided funding for Community Wardens to roll out a Be Safe, Be Seen scheme making use of illuminated products to wear on bags, clothing, cycles etc. so that they can be seen in the dark. She also informed the meeting that KCC are lobbying the government to highlight the high levels of council tax in Kent in comparison with London Boroughs.

● Cllr. Goodman informed us that the Open Gardens

● District Cllr. Crow-Brown advised that the shift patterns of enforcement officers is being changed to enable better coverage of parking problems near schools and in the evenings. There is still no update on possible government intervention regarding the Thanet Local Plan. In the meantime, TDC are working to refurbish more empty properties and get them back into use. He added that housing demand is high, demonstrated by the fact that a vacant property in Taylor Road had 160 applicants.

would be on 16th and 17th June this year and the meeting agreed the use of the recreation ground for parking during this event. ● Questions from the public included concerns over the location of the travellers, and the proposed development to the west of Greenhill Gardens. There was also an issue raised about too many yellow lines in the village causing problems with parking. The Chairman said that the small minority of inconsiderate drivers meant that there was little choice but to place yellow lines around junctions and corners.

Minster Matters MINSTER WI

New members and visitors were warmly welcomed and Jerusalem was sung, then Minster WI enjoyed a relaxed and friendly meeting in March, with many members trying out crafts - cross stitch Easter cards, glass painting and making a quirky fabric chicken paperweight - whilst others enjoyed socialising and playing board games. The competition for a plate of 6 iced Easter biscuits was won by Jo Thorne by popular vote, and entries were added to the treat of special refreshments of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Members were reminded about fundraising plans for the year, starting with our Wine and Wisdom quiz night in the Village Hall on Saturday 21st April, where we will be serving our generous ploughman's supper for £6 per ticket. (For more details see our advertisements). Advance notice was given that our May meeting will be postponed for one week to Tuesday 15th May as the Minster Playhouse will be using the hall on our usual evening. Each year Minster WI awards a bursary to one member towards the cost of a short residential educational course at the WI Denman college. This time the draw was won by Dorothy Butterworth. Congratulations Dorothy! Our Speaker in April will be Eddie Smith, talking about a career as a milliner.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB The Indoor season is rapidly drawing to a close, by the time you receive this issue the League season will be over. Suggested Themes (don’t have to be followed): Anniversary of Ending of WW1 - Emily Pankhurst & Vote for Women Rules of the Minster Matters Scarecrow Challenge - Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th June 2018 1. All entry forms must be submitted to the ‘Minster Matters Scarecrow Challenge Committee’ at the library by Midday on Friday 1st June 2018 (email entries by Thursday 31st May). NO late entries for whatever reason will be accepted. 2. All scarecrows will be judged on the following criteria: a. Reduce, reuse and recycle - where possible recycle or re-use materials. New materials used should be able to be recycled or reused. All scarecrows must be built from scratch by the entrant (no commercial creations allowed). These steps could be demonstrated by taking photographs of the process with a listing of the materials you have used. If no additional information is given beside the scarecrow, the judges will use what they can see to estimate how environmentally friendly your scarecrow is. b. Creativity and originality - judges will be looking for scarecrows with that little bit extra, it may be the materials used, the way the scarecrow has been made, how the scarecrow is displayed, or simply a fantastic idea that catches the judges eye. c.

Artistic merit - will be judged on the visual impact of your scarecrow. It may be the detail, the use of colours, and the care

with which it has been shaped or sculpted or it may simply look fantastic. The more fabulous your entry looks, the higher your score is likely to be in this category. 3. The majority of the work should be done by the child if it is a child’s entry. 4. Children’s ages will be taken into account and this information should be displayed with the scarecrow or given on the entry form (if known at that time). 5. The scarecrow can be smaller but should not be larger than: 2.5m wide x 3.0m high. 6. All scarecrows should be constructed to consider the prospect of inclement weather. 7. You can use any materials you like to build your scarecrow, there are no restrictions - with just one exception: pre-moulded or commercially available face masks ARE NOT permitted. 8. All entrants are reminded that this is a public event and all scarecrows must be made and displayed in good taste. The Committee reserve the right to withdraw any scarecrows that they deem unsuitable. Any entrant designing their scarecrow to cause deliberate offence will be disqualified and may be barred from future events. 9. Scarecrows need to be clearly labelled with their own name and entry number (Entry numbers will be provided by the committee during the week leading up to the event). 10. All scarecrows must be displayed at the front of your property and should be positioned so as it is unnecessary for anyone to access your property in order to view them. They must also be secured in a manner that they will not blow away and will not otherwise be a danger to or possibly cause injury to anyone. The ‘Minster Matters Scarecrow Challenge Committee’ will not be held responsible for any damage to Third Party property caused by the creation or insecurity of scarecrows. Owners are held solely responsible for the safety and security of their scarecrow(s). 11. There is an entry fee payable for each scarecrow. Families may enter more than one scarecrow but each scarecrow will require a separate entry form and each will incur a separate entry fee. Entry forms will be available from shops displaying our poster or via the Minster Matters website at 12. Judging will take place across the weekend starting on the evening of Friday 15th June (weather permitting) and scarecrows must remain on display over the whole of the weekend for the general public to view. There will also be a ‘Public Vote’ over the weekend and a further prize will be awarded to the winner of this category. All winners will be notified and prizes will be awarded at 6.30pm on Sunday 17th (Venue to be notified). ALL entrants are asked to attend if possible. The scarecrow committee and judges’ interpretation of these rules (and any decisions made by them) are absolutely final – and can’t be challenged! 13. You may take your scarecrow in after 9pm on Friday (earlier if it has been judged), if you feel it would be beneficial to do so, in order to prevent overnight weather or vandalism damage. A judges’ card will be attached to each scarecrow when it has been viewed and photographed. Scarecrows should however be replaced in the same position on Saturday by 9.30am. Saturday evening you may again take them in but not until after 5.30pm, replacing them by 9.30am on Sunday. They should remain on display until 5.30pm on Sunday. 14. Finally… The most important rule: MAKE SURE YOU ENJOY YOURSELVES!!!!

Wells’ science fiction classic would be performed live by just four actors with intelligences lesser than average.. The critically-acclaimed Pantaloons invade the stage in this funny yet faithful new adaption as they use musical instruments, puppetry and, um, enthusiasm to recreate deadly heat- rays, giant fighting-machines, squidgy tentacled Martians and interplanetary warfare on an epic scale. The chances of success? A million to one…

1st Minster Cubs win Swimming Gala after almost 30yrs On Saturday 24 February, a team comprising of Amey Archer, Erin Archer, Nicholas Thompson, Milan Thompson, Olivia Jenkinson, Ethan Simpkin and Kyle Freeborn, entered the Annual Cub District Swimming Gala and were successful in winning the competition. The last time we appeared on the trophy was back in 1990, so well done to all. Here’s a photo of the team (minus Ethan who was ill). Don’t Forget! We are the only village-based Group in the Thanet District and are always on the lookout for adult assistance to help run all 3 sections of the Group to continue to help our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, or assist the Group behind the scenes. If you’re interested please get in touch. Thank you, Baloo Chris Porter 823788

Francesco Pablo de Besperato "The famous artist who lived in a Council House in Minster" This painting was kindly donated to Minster Surgery PLG by Alan Razzell, who had owned it for 50 years and wanted it to go towards one of their fund raising campaigns. Despite approaching local art dealers to verify its authenticity and offer it for sale, no one expressed an interest. After Christmas it was on display in the Waiting Room. where patient, Anna Cousins, who came in for a routine appointment, took one look at it along with the associated description and photographs, and shouted “That’s me in the photo, I’m his daughter!” During a long emotional conversation Mrs Cousins, told the PLG that she had lost her father when she was 11, moved away and lost contact with her family. The PLG introduced her to Mr Razzell and they all met again at the surgery last week when Mrs Cousins brought in several old family photos and treasures and is now hoping to have the complete collection on display somewhere.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? Inventiveness, when living more than walking distance away from a shop, is all-important! Frustrated by a wish to make a lovely warming fudge crumble combined with a lack of the usual rhubarb, I was forced to investigate the freezer for alternatives.... Result… Sweet cherries and home grown raspberries make the most delicious pudding imaginable.  It made up beautifully using gluten free digestive biscuits. If you do use them, use a little less butter. Cherry and Raspberry Fudge Crumble 1 ½ lb/900g frozen cherries and raspberries (approx.) 2oz/50g sugar, white or brown (to taste – I usually use less) Slug of cassis/framboise for the crumble: 4oz/110g butter (3.5oz/90g if using gluten free biscuits) 4oz/110g Demerara sugar 6oz/170g digestive biscuits, crushed to crumbs 1 rounded teaspoon ground cinnamon Defrost the fruit in an ovenproof dish. Add the liqueur and sugar to taste. Set the oven to 200 deg C. Melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in the Demerara sugar, digestive crumbs and cinnamon. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring from time to time. Then cover the fruit with the crumble and bake in a hot oven 200 deg C for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve either warm with vanilla ice cream (home made, naturally!) or cold with whipped cream/Greek yoghurt.

MINSTER PLAYHOUSE PROMPT CORNER May Play 2018 Of course our May Play, Pygmalion, by Bernard Shaw, is at the forefront of our minds and endeavours at the moment. Rehearsals have started and are going really well, with much laughter. I hadn’t realised quite how funny this play is until I saw it delivered well in rehearsal. I learnt something interesting and a bit surprising from a TV quiz show this week; Bernard Shaw is the first and only person ever to win both the Nobel Prize for literature, and an Oscar! The Oscar was for his adaptation of his play to the screenplay of his 1938 film of Pygmalion with Leslie Howard in the role of Higgins. The script that we are working from contains the scripts for parts of the screenplay that Shaw added to flesh out the play with scenes not possible in a stage performance. I am hoping to incorporate some of these scenes into our performance using multi-media. I do not know if it will be possible yet as there are many difficulties to overcome but we shall certainly do it if we can. Shaw certainly handles the comedy with a light, sure touch that is a joy to watch. For this production we have yet another newcomer to our ranks, this one from the heady heights of acting for the BBC!

Pygmalion runs from Wednesday 9th to Saturday 12th of May at the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. Please come along and support us while having a good night out. The Box Office is now open on 07501 894 381, Tickets are £8.00. Am Dram is fun! If you would like to try it out, come and say hello. It is not just acting – lighting and sound are fascinating hobbies and we always need and welcome new people, because Minster Playhouse is not a run-of-the-mill amateur dramatic society. We work to unusually high artistic and technical standards, and have a dedicated following of enthusiastic theatre-goers who make a point of not missing our productions. If you haven’t been to see us, make the effort and come along – we work hard to make sure that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Your Letters…

In Memory of…

London Marathon in aid of The Stroke Association I am running the London Marathon on 22nd April 2018 in aid of The Stroke Association. So far, 5 members of my family have been affected by Strokes, The Stroke Association work tirelessly to help those who have suffered a stroke to lead as normal a life as possible afterwards. So far, I have raised £1000 of my £2000 target but I still need everyone's help to reach my fundraising target! Please can the wonderful people of this village and the area sponsor me, just a few pounds will help so much. I can be sponsored by text message, simply text PCMH76 £5 to 70070 in order to donate £5 to my cause or go to click on "make a donation" and search for Mark Huttley to make a donation there. Many thanks to all those who can donate, and if you can't, then please cheer me along the way on April 22nd (I'm going to need it!) Many thanks, Mark Huttley ttley

Thank you… I would like to say a big thank you to Katrina of “Forget Me Not Angels” for giving new life to my husband’s memorial which was in a sorry state. It is a pleasure to see it now and it gives a nice warm feeling to me to see his place lovely again with flowers as well. Brenda Saker - wife of Ken

Pauline Dyer Graham and family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support over such a difficult time. A memorial service will be held in Minster at a future date.

Sad passing of Musi It is with regret that I share the sad news that Musi, formally of Archie’s Fish and Chip shop has passed away. Musi made a lot of friends in his time at Archie’s and will be missed by many people. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
