New Telephone Number for the Library 03000 41 31 31 EDITORIAL Wow, this month we have more colour pages than we’ve ever had before. As I Brenda write I think there will be 12 pages in colour if the school pages warrant it, otherwise there will still be 10 which is a figure we’ve never reached before. Rodney will moan when he sees the bill but ‘Que Sera, Sera’ I’ll take it on the chin when he decries my decision. I just couldn’t let the opportunity go by to show all the photogrphs we’ve received in ‘glorious technicolour’ as the saying goes. There are some wonderful Diane images of a prominent village resident parading about in a huge yellow banana skin suit - what some people will do to get noticed!!. There are also a number of pictures taken at the recent refurbishment of the library and we also have some great pictures supplied by the school of recent events they’ve attended. Well done to Nora Silver Class on their WOW Award. Congratulations are also in order for Matt Sworder and The Corner House Restaurant who successfully beat all of their opposition to become the Taste of Kent Restaurant of the Year 2015, well done to Matt and his team, well deserved I’m sure. With Brenda very poorly last month but well on the road to recovery now, it Henry became my turn to suffer with my health. I was struck down by what the doctors believe was a severe stomach virus that left me being extremely sick and not eating for 10 days - not the way I’d recommend to go about losing weight - but lose weight I did plus I became really badly dehydrated. However I’m on the mend now and I thank all members of the team who have rallied round to get this issue out, especially Diane Amy who came out of ‘retirement’ to do what she could and Diane who took on extra pages this month, thank you all so much I wouldn’t have coped without you. Now we have another team member who is in the wars, Sue, our audio recording supremo has injured her back and has been bedridden for a while - we hope she is soon back to full health - meanwhile Diane and Nora are covering the job for this Diana issue. Sadly Nora says she will be leaving the team permanently to return home to California as soon as she and husband Barry are able to secure employment there, but hopefully we’ll be able to call on her services again before she leaves our shores. The Scarecrow Competition is gaining momentum and we’ve had enquiries already about getting entry forms. These should be available from a number of local Kevin businesses within the next week or you can download same from our website. It promises to be a success if initial interest is anything to go by. I will be off speaking nicely to local proprietors in the hope of securing some worthwhile prizes, so get your entry form and get planning. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP TEXT MESSAGING SERVICES The surgery telephone system has been enhanced to facilitate additional text messaging services for patients, sent direct to their mobile phone. As well as appointment confirmation and reminders, additional information regarding healthcare and vaccination campaigns, such as “Seasonal “Flu Vaccines” will now be available. To ensure you can receive this information please confirm your personal details and telephone numbers held by the surgery are correct, and that you advise them of any changes. Please note that this a secure and confidential system and we DO NOT share such information with anyone. APPOINTMENT QUESTIONNAIRE The surgery is proposing to reorganise the appointments procedure, both in making and attending the appointment itself. Also under consideration is the unacceptable level of patients who fail to attend a pre-booked appointment, and how best to deal with repeat offenders. We would welcome patients feedback on these issues and are thus launching a survey to help decide the best way forward. We would be very grateful if patients could spend a few minutes whilst they are at the surgery and complete a simple questionnaire. Thank you for your help and support. MISSED APPOINTMENTS - STILL FAR TO HIGH!! LAST MONTH 50 PATIENTS DID NOT attend their DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT AND 75 DID NOT attend their NURSES APPOINTMENT! SO THAT’S 125 PATIENTS WASTING VALUABLE APPOINTMENTS and TIME! SO TELL US PLEASE: - WHAT YOU THINK - WHAT WOULD YOU DO? DON’T BE A TIME WASTER - DON’T NEED IT - CANCEL IT ! KEEP FORGETTING - REGISTER ! One day IT MIGHT BE YOU who urgently needs an appointment only to be told “SORRY THEY’VE ALL GONE”!

OUR NEW PROJECT This year we wanted to purchase something that would be of benefit to all ages, from infancy to the elderly, and assist in the diagnosis of the patient’s illness and breathing difficulties, both at the surgery and in the patient’s home. The following has been suggested: A “Nellcor Portable Patient Monitoring System with Paediatric Connectivity” at an approximate cost of £1300. This type of Pulse Oximetry Monitor was only launched last year and would be a tremendous asset to the surgery and benefit to our patients. SPRING FAYRE Our Annual Spring Fayre will be held on: SATURDAY 16 May at the “OLD SCHOOLS” Tables remain at £9 large or £6 small and of course there is Free Entry. Several tables have already been sold and only a few remain so BOOK NOW to avoid disappointment. Please see our Poster in this issue for further details of this event. SURGERY STAFF TRAINING DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00 Mid-day onwards on the following days: Wednesday 29 April; Thursday 21May; Wednesday 24 June. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times. Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the “NHS 111 Service” via the normal surgery number 821 333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive “non-urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For Urgent/Life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in April, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact Ken Self on 821 200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821 049.

New Britain New Britain is full of amazing people, descendants from tribes from all corners of the world. Blood runs through our veins from way back in the past, Roman, Viking, Saxon, Norman, historic ancestry that forever lasts. Folk from many varied nations live in New Britain today, from North, South, East and West. Making New Britain a land a cut above the rest. From way back in time, it has been written, “We are all related”, how wonderful to know. This tells us we are all brothers, so to each other kindnesses much show. Maybe we can live in harmony and peace, and I would like to scribe on the surface of the Moon for all the world to see. “Love thy neighbour, unconditionally”. Minster Playhouse Prompt Corner Rehearsals are going well for the May production which will be Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite. This is an interesting production where each of the three short Acts is a small play in itself, the common thread being that each is set in the same suite in New York’s Plaza Hotel, and each is a comedy in a different style. will run from Wednesday 13 May to Saturday 16 May at 7.30 pm, at the Village Hall. The box office is now open and tickets are £8 each.

The Box office number is 07501 894 381. We are looking for a September play and director, and also for a Pantomime and director, so again, if you have an idea, please get in touch. Finally the Playhouse will be hosting one of its ever popular Wine and Wisdom evenings this year, date yet to be decided, but watch the notice boards and Minster Matters for further info. As always, if you are interested in joining us, in any capacity, contact us via the website – we look forward to hearing from you.

"MIRROR – SIGNAL - MANOEUVRE" Mirror, signal, manoeuvre, My first day has arrived, Driving lessons at fifty-one; I must be out of my mind. I don't know why I'm doing this, I don't have nerves of steel, My heart is thumping very fast' As I hang on to the wheel Mirror, signal manoeuvre, My instructor gives the word, As I round the bend with caution; I still manage to hit the kerb. Traffic lights and roundabouts, Junctions, cars and signs, I read the road so carefully' And must not cross the lines. A pelican, a toucan, A zebra crossing too, It doesn’t sound like driving' It sounds more like a zoo. With my hour’s lesson over, And a sigh of great relief, I know that I can do this, 'Cos I have a strong belief. Wendy Scott

News from the Belfry From the Tower of St. Mary the Virgin in Thanet

Tower Bells Again, a fairly quiet month for the tower bells, with regular practices and Sunday ringing, which the PCC has extended to half an hour, between Services. The band continues to improve, helped by occasional visits to the tower by experienced local ringers. This month we had three visitors to a tower Wednesday practice when an accomplished local ringer brought two interested people along to watch and to try. We hope to gain a new learner from that visit. On the 28 March Tony has organised a group to visit the lovely little church at Preston to ring their newly refurbished hang of bells, which are very light to ring. We also visit Chislet on occasions. Tower visits are fun and social, a hallmark of bell ringing. The band welcomes new members and learners from the village and beyond. Our practise night is Wednesday from 7.30 to 9.00pm. It is a friendly band, and tower, with lots of fun and laughter while taking our ringing seriously. The handbell ringers practice at our Church on Wednesday nights at 6.00pm and Saturday mornings at 10.00am and also welcome newcomers who want to give this team based music a try. MINSTER BOWLS CLUB NEWS FROM THE GREEN All our Indoor Finalists are known, Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 March will be the days of action. It's good to see one of our youngest bowlers has qualified for 5 out of the 8 Finals. The Presentation Evening to award the prizes will be Friday 15 May. For those playing outdoors this season the "Pre- Season Meeting" is Friday 10 April at 7.00pm.We look forward to meeting any one new to the village who may wish to join as a bowler, or those looking to get some FREE coaching as complete novices. The Green will be opened on Saturday 11 April, weather permitting, for everyone to get their arms back into working order. Our first match will be Sunday 19 April at Whitstable, this is a Mixed Triples game. Those wanting to come to another Race Night our next will be Friday 8 May at 7.00pm. This is an hilarious night out, the Club supplies all your paper betting money. At the end of all the races there is an auction to use up all your winnings. The bar will be open early, please provide your own nibbles. Looking further ahead Sunday 21 June will be the "ANNUAL OPEN DAY" where we welcome Village Teams of NON bowlers. If anyone is feeling depressed/distressed, looking for somewhere to socialise then look no further, our doors are open daily from 10.00am until late, throughout the Summer, Mondays between 2.00pm and 4.30pm being the only exception. We look forward to seeing you all during the coming six months. Glynne Hibbert

April 2015 Thank you….

“Thank you” so much for the help and care shown to me by all my friends before and during my health “BLIP” recently, especially for the rota system set in place so Grady gets a good walk most days - much appreciated by me and him. He is much loved at the kennels but there’s no place like Home!. Also for the lovely flowers and fruit from the MM team. The care I experienced at the QEQM Hospital was amazing and ongoing. Nothing was too much trouble, they provided my every need from good food, toothbrush, soap, towels and all “Stay” clothing. Really an eye opener as to how lucky we are to have the NHS. Brenda

Zac’s Musings The old boy has been pretty poorly just lately and I was beginning to think he was wasting away. However I think he’s on the mend but still looks to have quite a way to go yet. He enlisted the help of Amy to put this issue together so no late nights under the stairs this month. Mum’s been looking very worried but I think she’s fretting over the old boy. Let’s hope he gets better soon and we can get back to some form of normality instead of nights on the sofa and having to fight for the blanket! Holiday bookings have been put on hold but I think they’re still considering it for when he’s well enough, let’s just hope wherever we go we can all enjoy the break.

MINSTER SCARECROWS Get your entry form now! Available from various outlets in the village - look for our poster. Where Was I ? Where was I, when I wasn’t there? I don’t know, nor do I care I may have been there yesterday, But then again I cannot say, You see, I don’t remember owt, Just what I know seems in some doubt, Probably best I don’t despair, ‘Cos after all, I wasn’t there ! Budding young artists from Minster Primary School joined library staff and council leaders to mark the official launch of Minster Library’s refurbishment on World Book Day, Thursday 5 March 2015. Funding for the refurbishment came from developer contributions which enabled a range of improvements including new shelving, new seating, new audio visual display units, and 2,200 new books – specifically chosen thanks to customer suggestions collated throughout November 2014. The library has also been painted and window film has been installed to give a fresher, more modern feel. The local library team welcomed Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services Mike Hill, who had seen the library through its first move to Monkton Road from Church Street back in 2002. Local member Cllr Roger Latchford also attended the event, along with Cllrs. John Quittenden, Bob Grove and Danny Day of Minster Parish Council who share the library building. The children of Minster Primary School created book reviews and artwork for the computer suite.

1st Minster Beavers were proud to invest two new recruits into their colony. Jonathan (pictured receiving his woggle) and Harry made their Beaver Oath in front of the colony and were presented with their woggles, certificate and badges by Keeo and Sunshine. Beavers takes place on Thursdays from 5 p.m. Richard, the Vicar led a fun and thought provoking Family to 6.15 p.m. at The Salvation Army Hall for children aged 6 Service at St Mary's in Minster to mark Fairtrade Fortnight and 7, new members are sure of a warm welcome, plenty of this year. He didn't hesitate when offered a brand new fun and the chance to try new things, so why not come along and join in the fun. Fairtrade banana suit to wear! The congregation that included Rainbows, Brownies and Guides were all given a teabag each to focus on tea plantation workers in Malawi, whose lives have been moved away from the edge of poverty because they now sell much of their tea on Fairtrade terms. One of the things the Malawian village community has done with their Fairtrade money is to buy an ambulance so that people can be transported quickly to the hospital that is 30 km away. Kind regards Charlotte Tagart, Thanet Fairtrade Initiative

Fleur (the Carnival Giant) who was invited to join a Giants weekend in Tourcoing, near Lille. Poor Mildred was lined up for the off, when a gust of wind sent her face first to the ground, where she suffered minor abrasions

on her face and wrist. She was attended by about 8 concerned people who did their best to tidy her up with tape and skin coloured paint. We understood from the event organisers in France that it was the first time that they had an entry from the UK and as a result, we have been invited back for 2016. In the absence of the President, Sarah, who had been delayed, Nicky Richardson welcomed members and guests to the “Social and Craft” meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 10 March. Nicky called upon Penny Stone to tell the meeting about her trip to Denman College and the stained glass course she attended. Members were very impressed with the multi-coloured glass pane she made and the story of her stay in the WI’s College. Everyone then moved around trying various activities including Zentangle (Doodling), Crocheting, Felt Craft (Easter Eggs and Bunnies) etc, together with a great deal of chatting! During the particularly relaxed social evening, various “draws” took place and the delighted winners were announced - Joan Backler will be going to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party and Cathey Hoenes won a place on a course of her choice at Denman College! After announcing that April’s meeting will include a talk by Miss Maybe on Burlesque, Sarah closed what had been a particularly enjoyable, friendly and creative meeting. April 2015 COMIC RELIEF On Friday 13 March a wonderful group of girls from Year 6 organised an amazing event for comic relief. All the children had a blast on a bouncy castle and enjoyed the

WOW AWARD CEREMONY AT LEEDS CASTLE On Thursday 19 March, we were really excited to be chosen from our class to go to Leeds Castle with Mrs Daw and Mrs Gillatt to collect an award for WOW, Walk on Wednesday! Our class (Silver class) won the award for the most children walking to school on a Wednesday, in the whole of Thanet. When we arrived at the castle, we had a lovely drink of orange and some ’Grandma Wild’ cookies, and believe us, they were wild!!! We were bit nervous when we were called up to receive our certificate, but it was a lot of fun! We had our photo taken in the castle grounds, with lots of people and the Walking Bug. It was really freezing, we were lucky we didn’t get hypothermia! We saw the lake with lots of black swans on the water, and we saw quite a few peacocks as well. On the way back to school, we did some drawings of the nature surrounding us. The trees, daffodils and white roses looked magnificent and the countryside was peaceful and quiet as we drove along. We are really proud of the fact that our class won this award, because we both enjoy walking to school every day, as it keeps us fit and our mums and dads don’t drive to the school, which cuts down on the pollution levels in Thanet. Chloe Hodges and Ben Shaw.

scrumptious cakes from the bake off, as well as other activities. The Year 6 girls had received some great prizes from local businesses to give to the winners of the raffle event which was announced during a fun-packed assembly in the afternoon. The cakes were all fantastic but the winner of the inter-house baking competition was the Vikings. All the pupils came to school in non-uniform wearing the funky red noses to get into the spirit and teachers had planned fun lessons linked with Africa. So far £1,624.49 has been raised for the Comic Relief Charity. We would like to thank all our parents/guardians for helping bake such delicious cakes and for giving so generously, the day wouldn’t have been possible without your help. We would also like to thank ABC for supplying the bouncy castle. Everyone had so much fun. MOTHER’S DAY When children don’t have arguments, When they just sit and play, The chances are it’s time, It’s time for Mother’s Day. The presents are all hidden, For once smiles aren’t forbidden, The lights are low, Her face will glow, Mother’s Day is near. The roses stand and wait, There’s a cookie on the plate, Mother’s Day is here. When children don’t have arguments, When they just sit and play, The chances are it’s time, It’s time for Mother’s Day. MOTHERS DAY On Mother’s Day me and my sister got up and made our Mum a lovely coffee and a mini omelette which had cheese and tomato in. Mum got up at half past nine, she came downstairs and because we got her some presents she started to open them. She loved the little candle I got her that said I love you Mum and she adored the chocolates Harriet gave her they were in the shape of a heart, she loved them they were scrumptious. After we had all got dressed we went out to Wild Wood it was really cold but fun. Right at the end I went on the drop slide it was really exciting but Harriet was too scared so she just watched. Finally we went home, we watched a film and then went to bed. BEST MOTHER’S DAY EVER!!! By Madeleine Taylor

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT At the beginning of last week, Mr. McCarthy and Reverend Braddy came to assembly dressed as bananas! The whole school thought it was really funny but we soon learnt there was a good reason why they were dressed in banana costumes. We learned that there are many people involved in the “journey of a banana” including the shopkeeper, exporter, importer and banana farmer. The banana farmer is the last person in the chain and only gets a small amount of money for all his hard work. Mr. McCarthy and Reverend Braddy explained how Fairtrade helps farmers in poorer countries by making sure they are paid a fair price for each banana they sell. In Years 4 and 5 we continued learning more about Fairtrade countries. We identified where different produce comes from including tea, sugar and rice and some of our favourite things such as tropical fruits and cocoa beans. In Year 4 we looked at the “Journey of a Banana” and decided how much each person in the chain should be paid making sure the farmer was paid a fair price. We also made delicious banana and choc chip muffins using Fairtrade ingredients. In Year 5 we played Karuta, a traditional Japanese card game using a Fairtrade theme which had been designed by schools across East Kent. We also designed posters to tell people how important it is to buy Fairtrade products when they are doing their grocery shopping. We now know how important Fairtrade can be in helping farmers in developing countries plan for a better future.

Described as ‘an electrifying experience’, Merry Opera’s ground-breaking production of Handel’s Messiah dramatically portrays twelve strangers seeking spiritual comfort as they struggle to understand the world. MINSTER RESTAURANT COMES OUT ON TOP The Taste of Kent Awards, Restaurant of the Year 2015 goes to The Corner House Minster Not just a destination for comedy politicians An amazing result for this village restaurant that has been open for less than two years but with a growing reputation for serving great tasty food with an imaginative twist. The Taste of Kent Awards ceremony was held at the Kent County Showground at Detling on Thursday 12 March 2015 and organised by ‘Produced in Kent’. In reference to the finalists it was a great success for all concerned with the judges making the following observations when awarding the restaurant of the year award. All the nominees are in East Kent demonstrating what a fantastic choice there is for restaurants in that part of Kent. The main criteria professional judges were looking for was evidence of local sourcing for both food and drink, good service, enjoyment and of course value for money. The winner ticked all these boxes scoring very highly and it is particularly worth noting that this restaurant is a youngster in terms of how long it has been open. "It had a warm and friendly feel and shouted ‘Kentish’ in its menu with beautiful flavours. A serious foodie restaurant and one of the best I have ever been to". Chef Proprietor of The Corner House, Matthew Sworder said: "It is a great honour for The Corner House to have our work recognised by the judges This has been an amazing experience in such a short time, working with a great team who help transform the beautiful Kent ingredients into fantastic meals. This is further enhanced by the great hospitality shown by our knowledgeable and welcoming front of house team. An amazing result, not only for the team at The Corner House but the fact that all of the finalists came from Thanet. This shows the area is not just a destination for a range of comedy politicians but some serious foodies too!" The Corner House, 42 Station Road, Minster CT12 4HD Phone 01843 823 000 Email:
