Community Tree Planting Event On Saturday 15 March around 60 residents gathered at the new extension to the Recreation Ground to help plant

420 trees that the Parish Council had secured from the Woodland Trust. Village Tree Warden Paul Willins coordinated the planting which because of the good turn out only took 40 minutes to complete. As you will see from the photos the event was well supported and the Parish Council were pleased to see so much community involvement. It is hoped the parishioners will now take ownership of the area and help to protect it from vandalism so that the trees have a chance to flourish and grow. Thank you to the Scouts and Guides for taking part in the event and a big thank you to the Bowls club for the very welcome refreshments.

A bit of a quick update on the calendar. Tony and I have populated it with everything we could find, plus we have had a number of individuals trying it out via the ‘trial’ login. There are still quite a number of groups and Ray venues whom we haven’t seen using it as yet, so this is a gentle reminder that to make this of any real value we need all venues and groups in the village to come onboard and start to use it. In particular we need the diary dates from the Village Hall, the Old Schools and the Sports Pavilion. Amy We’ve made it easier, in that you can now register directly online and Semi-retired!! not have to wait for us to issue usernames and passwords. We’ve also updated the ‘Instructions’ document to include how to reset your password if you forget it. To download the instructions or to register go to the homepage at Brenda and you will find both of the links you need at the very bottom left of each page. As we said previously if you feel unable to do this yourself, or you would like us to talk you though it to begin with, then please contact either Tony Diane or myself via this email address: . It sends to both of us. We will continue to add anything we come across that isn’t listed, starting with everything that is new in this issue of Minster Matters. Nora Thank you to all those who have so far made a start, even it has only been one entry (some of which we had already added). We do ask that before you enter anything that you check the date of your event to ensure 1/ we haven’t already listed it and 2/ it hopefully doesn’t clash with other events at the same time. Henry Ray, Editor EDITORIAL Well I haven’t left myself much room this month, so at least you don’t have to put up with too many of my ramblings. Diane You should have had delivered, with this issue, a copy of the very first Minster Business Directory which is the result of a lot of hard work by a very small band of dedicated people, representing the Minster Business Association, who have, on many occasions had to chase business members more than once or even twice for their details. Diana The committee hope you find the directory of use and that you’ll keep it for future reference and not consign it to your recycling bag, at least not before you receive a new issue next year. Well it looks like I’m fast running out of space so I’ll just say that if you Kevin went looking for the Police Contact Point in Monkton Road car park we apologise. It did attend the village but it went back to the car park at the bottom of the High Street. Let’s hope they get it right in future now they been told and therefore know where they should be. So that’s it for this month, just my usual question - where’s Zac?

Regrettably, recently there have been several instances of abusive and aggressive behaviour towards various members of the surgery staff . All surgery receptionists and healthcare professionals are here to help our patients and provide an efficient and caring service, and find such behaviour unacceptable. We would therefore like to remind all those who visit the surgery that, in Discounts for longer stays common with other sectors of the N.H.S., we operate a “Zero Tolerance Policy” and will take such measures considered necessary to deal with such behaviour. 1P/6 Thank you for your patience and understanding.

HAVE YOU TRIED OUR NEW WEB SITE YET? MANY HAVE! A new more “user friendly’ web site is now available giving patients access to new on-line services, for example: Ordering repeat prescriptions, making appointments, travel advice for immunisations and access to your personal details to verify or amend as necessary. All information will be protected by your own “personal password” to maintain confidentiality and security, and will be accessible through your computer or on a mobile device via a free “App”. Contact the surgery to register your details and obtain your personal ID, then: Log on at the usual address: We will also be holding demonstrations at the surgery to familiarise patients with the system, so please advise us if you are interested in attending. APPOINTMENT REMINDERS VIA TEXT MESSAGE This service is now available to all patients, and hopefully will help overcome the number of “missed appointments”. A text message is sent to your mobile phone advising you of your forthcoming appointment. If we have your mobile telephone number on record this will be carried out automatically. If you wish to be included in this system, please advise the surgery and also to confirm your number. MISSED APPOINTMENTS LAST MONTH!!! As if to emphasise the need for such reminders, last month’s figures are, as always, extremely alarming ; Last month: 83 patients DID NOT attend their doctors appointment, a 10% increase over last month and 29 patients DID NOT attend their nurses appointment, a slight decrease. A total of 112 patients WASTING valuable appointment time! DON’T NEED IT - CANCEL IT !…… KEEP FORGETTING - REGISTER ! In common with other NHS Services, a list of those patients is now being compiled and action will be considered against repeat offenders. SURGERY TRAINING DAYS 2014 Please note that the surgery will close at 12.00 noon on the following days: Thursday 10th April; Tuesday 13th May Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the “NHS 111 Service” via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on “111”, to receive “non urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For Urgent/Life threatening issues, dial “999” as normal. ANNUAL SPRING FAYRE Our Spring Fayre will be held on: SATURDAY 17th MAY at the “OLD SCHOOLS” Several tables have already been booked - especially large tables SO BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT - RING 821200 NOW! All proceeds towards our new project, to purchase a “Heart Monitor” PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in April, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact: KEN SELF on 821200 or JEANNE LAWRENCE on 821049

On Tuesday 11th March President, Sarah Eaton Brown, opened a particularly busy and enjoyable monthly meeting with news of the forthcoming Centenary Celebrations, the village tree planting, the recent Golf Club meal enjoyed by members, the Denman College Draw, the New Member’s Evening and the Easter Tree Competition. Sarah also outlined a proposed day trip to Bruges in September. It was announced that cakes were on sale in aid of Help the Heroes as well as the Pennies for Friendship collection. After Liz read recent items of correspondence, the speaker, Glen Jones, was introduced. His talk “Medals” was a real treat, full of interesting historical facts and stories. Afterwards members were invited to ask questions and show Glen any medals they had brought to the meeting. Refreshments (with cakes) were followed by the counting of member’s votes on the Easter Tree Competition entries. Hilary Clarke came first and her tree (together with Shirley Ratty’s, which came second) will be entered into the Group Meeting Competition on the 9th April. Sarah thanked everyone for taking part and then reminded members to submit their “Centenary Bucket List” wishes! March’s Games Evening was cancelled for that month only. The raffle was drawn and the meeting closed at 9.45.

Minster Playhouse May Play Move over Mrs Markham A farce by Ray Clooney and John Chapman 'Move over Mrs Markham' is a door-slamming, trouser dropping farce set in 1971, which follows the antics of three sets of hopeful lovers when they all converge on the bedroom of the Markham's supposedly empty, but elegant, London flat. Things become more complicated when established author Olive Harriet Smythe arrives at the flat to offer her newest children's book to the publishing firm of Lodge and Markham. Mistaken identities galore and a bouncy oval bed make this a hugely enjoyable comedy, presented by many of your favourite Minster Playhouse performers, and one you will not want to miss. Performances are 7.30pm each evening from Wednesday May 14th to Saturday May 17th at the Village Hall.Tickets prices are just £8 for each evening and can be obtained by calling the box office 01843 220208, open early to late, 7 days per week. THANK YOU I would like to thank everyone who came to my Birthday Party. I was overwhelmed by the number that came. Thank you also for the lovely presents and for the messages in my book. Special thanks go to Julie, Bonnie, Claire, Emily, Gillian and Leanne. Sue

RECENT POLICE SURVEY Following on from the recent policing survey I put in Minster Matters I am pleased to report that to date we have had over 200 responses in favour of more policing with just 3 returns stating they are satisfied with the present cover. We are now setting up a meeting with Kent Police Commissioner Ann Barnes to discuss Rural Policing. Thank you Bob Groves

Minster Matters

Residents of Minster, It is a real pleasure to be writing this inaugural article for the Minster Matters publication, and I hope you will join me in recognising the outstanding information sharing platform that this can represent for all of us with a vested interest in the village. Kent Police will be providing a monthly written piece which will discuss any local issues we are currently engaging with, any future priorities we have for the area, what community events we will be attending, whilst also allowing us to convey important information if and when it presents itself. Inspector James Ross, PCSO Craig Raisbeck and I are all enthusiastic about the potential that this new initiative has and I hope it will further enhance the links between the village of Minster and Kent Police. Firstly, I am pleased to announce the arrival of Special Sergeant Ollie Woodrow, a highly experienced and long-serving volunteer with Kent Police, who will be dedicated to the ward of Thanet Villages. I know residents will appreciate some added police visibility and be impressed with his enthusiasm for the local area. Many of you have expressed to me the ongoing issues of parking in the vicinity of Minster Primary School and the concerns you have for pupils’ safety when crossing the surrounding roads between parked vehicles. I have personally witnessed the heavy traffic flow during school times whilst on patrol, and despite attendance with a civil enforcement officer from Thanet District Council, there are still vehicles parking inappropriately whilst collecting pupils. I have recently liaised with Deputy Headteacher Mr. McCarthy to develop some new ideas which we believe will help address parking in the area and we will hopefully be implementing these in the immediate future for a long term solution. Some of the joint ideas we produced included an assembly for pupils which will discuss road safety, and we will also ask the pupils to design banners which will be displayed outside of the school to raise awareness about unacceptable parking and the associated hazards it can have for children and parents. I am sure many of you are already aware that there is a walking bus service offered by the school and we are currently exploring ways to increase attendance which would alleviate traffic during school times. There were recently two incidents of burglary in Minster which are currently being investigated by Kent Police. I will be placing a large number of home and garden security leaflets in the Library which contain extensive crime prevention advice and I would recommend all residents consider the information contained in these leaflets. The severe weather conditions experienced across the county have resulted in heavy flooding on many of the rural roads surrounding Thanet Villages, and mud has also been deposited on road surfaces having run off of the fields. I would therefore encourage all road users to employ extra caution particularly on quieter roads. Finally I would like to extend my gratitude to the Monday Art Group who were highly welcoming when I visited last week and I hope to visit again soon to see how your art works have progressed. Kind regards PCSO Steve England 58478 April Days Linnets on the balcony, nesting in the trees. Rosy cap and chest, smart as can be Blackbirds stand guard on the top of the hedge. Father Blackbird, gives an honest pledge. To watch over his offspring, until they fly. Then he will help to feed them, until the right time is nye. Greenfinches, Goldfinches, and of course the cheeky Sparrows. All find a nesting place in our gardens, where they have a view of all our flowers. Skylarks rise up from the fields nearby. Singing their beautiful song from way up high. The Green Parakeets, screech as they take flight. With their red faces, oh! so bright. The Collared Doves, will stay together, till death to them part, they have such pretty feathers. The Pigeons, also coo, to say " I love you." Seagulls fly high on the thermals and then perch on our tiles. When they speak to each other, their voices carry for miles and miles. These birds stay around the houses, hoping for a crust of bread. They become rather lazy, this in my books I have read. Yvonne

News from the Belfry From the Tower of St. Mary the Virgin in Thanet

On Wednesday 12th March at 7 pm the bell ringers of Minster held an open evening at St. Mary’s Church when they invited the public to see both the tower bells and the hand bells. There was a good attendance with considerable interest, and several people tried

handbell ringing. Enough people were interested in joining the handbell band to allow the formation of a second team. This means that there should always be a team available to play for events around the Village. The handbells have already attracted a lot of interest and have several events lined up where they have been asked to play. There are many videos of handbell ringing on YouTube including a girl playing ‘How Great Thou Art’ solo, which is fascinating to watch. On Sunday 16th March the 10 o’clock service included the dedication of the handbells. Sally Willins

took the Lenten service, and the handbells played The Bells of St. Mary’s, How Great Thou Art, and The Lord is My Shepherd (Crimond) during the service. The creation of a second band has allowed some of the tower bell ringers to return to practice in the tower. Anyone who may be interested in ringing the tower or hand bells will be made very welcome. Practices are held on Saturdays at 10.00am and Wednesdays at 7.30pm at St. Mary’s Church.

The walk begins at the Abbey gates, where we gather in silence at 9.45am. We then silently walk up through the village, remembering together the pain and the agony endured by Our Lord. The walk culminates outside Minster Bakers with a short service.

For Lent it is common for people to give up something that they love, such as, chocolate or sweets. The day before the beginning of Lent is known as Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day.)

And Millie Young

Walk to School Awards 2013 A few weeks ago, Ali, the FLO at Minster School was invited to the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury, to the Walking Bus Awards. Brian Portanier, Bryony and Hudson also went along to collect our Top Green School Award. The Minster School Walking Bus has been running for over 12 years now, which shows how we, as a school are very committed to green travel. Bryony told me ‘The afternoon was so good and I am so happy that the school won an award! To think that we had ice creams as well made it even nicer! They were yummy!’ Hudson liked the award ceremony because he thought it was fun. ‘I felt a bit nervous walking on to the stage to collect our award, my knees were trembling! I felt very proud holding the award. I have been a member of the Walking Bus for 4 years now. The best thing is that we have sweets on a Friday! Brian also gives us goodie bags every term with special treats inside.’ Active Bug incorporates all green travel including walking, scooting, cycling, park-and-stride; it enables our children to have some exercise before school, leaving them more alert and ready to learn! Families who live too far from school to walk, just park and stride for 5 minutes! What a great way to start the day!

We asked some children of Minster School what they would be willing to give up for lent. Here are their suggestions. Holly Warner- Crisps Holly Pearshouse- Playing my favourite game Ray- Cake, biscuits Owen- Video games Bethany- Cheese Olivia- Playing Minecraft (on the tablet.) Chloe- Annoying her little brother Miss Theoff- Unhealthy snacks Yasmina- Flappy bird Billy- Crisps By Bethany & Holly.P

Skip 2 be fit by Olivia Ringrose and Holly Warner Skip to be fit is a yearly competition performed by the pupils of all the schools in Kent. First, each class have to decide which boy and girl is the quickest skipper in the class. Next, they compete against all the other schools. We interviewed Billy who was part of skip to be fit.

Food Tasting On Wednesday 26th February, Ben and Millie in Year 5 Turquoise class, decided to do some food tasting of mealworm wraps, for their environment project. Ingredients: Cooked Mealworms, Wraps, Lettuce, And a pinch of Onion. Ben said “it was really fun seeing people trying the most disgusting thing in the world!” What we want to know is: What did they taste like? And would you do it again? Millie said “I tasted them in a wrap and when I had eaten it all there was a mealworm left which tasted a lot like nuts, which I hate! I would bring them in again but next time, not to eat” by: Victoria & Chloe

The reason for eating pancakes is to get rid of all the rich ingredients before Lent starts. Lent lasts for 40 days and 40 nights.

How many skips did you do? “I did 72.” How long did that take? “Only 1 minute!” How did you feel when you finished your skips? “I felt tired after all of it!” Who was your partner who counted the skips? “My partner was Tommy!” How did you feel when you found out that you did 72 skips? “So amazed!!!!!” Are you excited about going to the finals? “I am thrilled and so excited to take part!” Where was Skip 2 be fit held? “It was held at Ramsgate Leisure Centre. It was an amazing experience”

Well done to our new Year 6 Prefects Our new Prefects are already proving to be reliable and committed to their role in their first few weeks. We hope you enjoy your responsibilities over the next 3 terms.
