Gentle summers, exotic gardens, verdant landscapes and magnificent architecture – Sintra is a charming once-in-a-lifetime destination. Just a 30-minute drive from Lisbon, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is rich with culture and history. Once an escape for Portuguese nobles and visionaries, today it’s beloved for palace visits, antique shopping and Mediterranean wining and dining.
Much more than just a five-star boutique hotel, Tivoli Palรกcio de Seteais is a gem of old world romance and luxury. Each room of this XVIII century palace has been restored with unique character from frescoes to tapestries and antiques. Splendid relaxation awaits in beautiful spaces, outdoors by the pool or in lush gardens and at the new Anantara Spa.
The residential palace was built in 1787 by the former Dutch Consul in Portugal. Several noble Portuguese families lived here before it became a hotel in 1955. Our guests over the years have included Agatha Christie, Alain Prost, Brad Pitt, Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, John Malkovich, Johnny Depp, Kylie Minogue, Maria Callas, Marguerite Yourcenar and Mick Jagger. According to legend, the area Seteais got its name in 1174 when one of the first Christian knights discovered a beautiful Moorish girl trying to escape the Sintra Mountains. She was bewitched and could only say “ai”, and died when she said it seven times (“Sete” in Portuguese “ais”). In our gardens, there is still a spot where if you shout “ai” you’ll hear the echo seven times.
The palace has 30 spacious and well-lit rooms, individually decorated and boasting sublime views. Modern comforts include LCD TVs, WiFi, air conditioning, coffee makers and iHomes. Delight in lovely touches such as welcome platters of local sweets and port wine, and tea and cookies for evening turndown service.
Butler service is available to assist guests’ every need from rooms to the pool and tennis courts. Tivoli Palåcio de Seteais employs two butlers to make stays as seamless and personalised as possible. They are available for desires from booking tours and activities to romantic garden picnics and evening turndown service.
Seteais Bar is the perfect place to refresh after sightseeing with impressive panoramic views of Sintra and excellent sips. Sit back at the end of the day with Portuguese wine, a cocktail or a hot drink. Enjoy superbly appointed interiors or the outdoor terrace against lush greenery. Seteais Restaurant offers gourmet dining enriched with breathtaking scenery. Savour exquisite renditions of Portuguese and international fare. Frescoes and oil paintings add extraordinary beauty, with live piano in the evenings. The restaurant can cater up to 120 people.
Start the day in charming style with breakfast at Seteais Restaurant. Sit down to a table decorated with dainty porcelain and silver sets. Coffee, tea, and fresh squeezed juices are served with guests’ choice of French toast, eggs Benedict, or an omelette. A buffet of croissants and breads, jams, fresh fruit and more is also available.
For the perfect wedding proposal or special indulgence, our private dining experience is a must. Choose your preferred setting – in a pergola by the pool overlooking Sintra or a palace room decorated with frescoes by French painter Jean-Baptiste Pillement. Did you know tea became popular in England thanks to Portugal’s Catherine of Braganza? When she first arrived to marry Charles II, feeling seasick from her voyage, she asked for a cuppa. The rest is history. Guests are invited to the palace tea room everyday for afternoon tea in her honour.
Indulge in an exclusive wine lovers experience at the Seteais Colares DOC room, our elegant new tasting den. Sip exclusive vintages from Sintra’s neighbouring wine region Colares, where a unique ageing process reveals smooth complexity and vivid flavour creating “what may well be Portugal’s most distinctive still wines,” according to the New York Times. Sit back in plush surroundings furnished with decorations from the Regional de Colares Winery. Enjoy wine tasting menus accompanied by tapas or a gourmet dinner with an impeccable choice of local cellared pairings.
Our garden grows various herbs and has more than 20 lemon trees, all providing rich flavour to our dishes. Guests are welcome to stroll the grounds, and are likely to spot the cooks picking ingredients. The white and pink camellias, Sintra’s symbolic flowers, are especially beloved for taking photos. The property is also home to a large nursery supplying lush plants throughout the palace.
With stunning views of the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, our elegant outdoor pool is the perfect retreat of peace and tranquillity in the heart of nature. Go for a few laps or enjoy our handmade Seteais Ice Cream by Artisani in rotating seasonal flavours such as cinnamon and lemon.
