This project was about translation of 2D into 3D in a given site. From the excerpt of “Six Memos for the Next Milenium” from Calvino, I concentrated on creating a memorable space through visual experience of changing shadows.

Light and Shadow Summer 2013

There is only one circulation in this project, which allows one to follow one direct path to the end. People enter through the lower level to the upper level. The progression of the form provides people with more shadow as they follow the path, which is then simplified as people reach the end. Different types of shadows are made in different times of the day, allowing people to create different experiences evertime they enter, which will stay in peoples’ mind as memory.

Vertical sections

This project was to translate Diebenkorn painting “Ocean Series Park #41 into a 3D form by using the method of stacking. Numerous nonintersecting lines in the painting were transformed into thresholds, and those threshold extended in to one space.

Horizontal sections

Having to translate the negative to positive/ positive to negative in previous project into concrete, I focused on keeping the same relationship between thresholds and space. The planes that create the thresholds extend in to create one space.

This project was focused on how the planes that create the thresholds fold in or stand on its own to create a gallery space. Different types of thresholds were used throughout the project, which created numerous openings and voids within mass.

Idea of threshold is used as a programmatic purpose to divide each spaces and how they relate to one another. There is a cafe that all floors share, as a continuous vertical mass and different programmatic spaces extend from it. So the idea of thresholds happen between those vertical space, cafe, and different horizontal spaces such as office and gallery. Different ideas of thresholds were used in each floors such as the folding of planes vertically or horizontally and 6ft wall that divide the spaces.

Folding of systems and folding of the planes were used to create a skateboard park in a given site. Besides having the forms fold in and out, the lines that create each folds of the exterior form was extruded down to create different spaces for given programs.

Skateboard Park Fall 2014

The folding of system continues from the ground floor to basement, creating a skateboard park that passes through the building.

The two egress have the same idea of folding, and was translated with the folding down of the site itself to create a bike trail that extends to the neighborhood.

The goal of this project was to create a sports center in a given urban site using the method of stacking. The method of stacking was used horizontally as the facades were rotated, extending further into the building.

Each Facade was made by 1’ framework, cladded in areas that required more privacy. I concentrated on containing the delicate aesthetics throughout the project.

Each rotating facade contains one program. There is one passage way that connects the entrance and the exit, which allows the occupants to walk through and experience different activities that happen throughout the building such as the rock climbing wall, performance stage, and a yoga studio. Creating a large opened space inside a building, there is a grand staircase that is mirrored to the window openings and the performance stage, allowing to create space for people to enjoy the view and the lighting.
