he Doomsday Book was created in 1086 and ENEFELDE (Enfield) was mentioned. It was assessed for thirty hides, (a hide of land was approx. 60 – 120 acres) so Enfield was 1800 – 3600 acres in those far-off days. Enfield Golf Club was on the Old Park Estate and, as you are probably aware, was first established in 1893, which means that we were amongst the first 500 clubs in the UK. There were six original founder members and the subscription was two guineas and, if unpaid by 1st January 1894, membership would cease. Sunday play was strictly prohibited and a caddie would cost 3d per hour. A lot has changed in the past 125 years. Our subs have increased and the only caddies are friends who may or may not get a drink in the bar after the game. I wonder what Mr F. Porter, the first official Captain in 1898, would think if he could see the Club now. On behalf of Enfield Golf Club, I offer a warm welcome to all our members, guests and visitors throughout the year and especially during our Festival of Golf
Week, which runs from the 7th to the 14th July. We pride ourselves on being the friendliest Golf Club in North London and this is due to the tireless efforts of all the staff and members, who devote their time to ensuring that we enjoy a wide variety of golf and social functions. The special events to be held in our Festival of Golf Week, will take much organisation and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 125th Sub-Committee: George Young, John Codling, Valerie Smeeton, Charlie Palmer, Martin Porter and of course not forgetting the wonderful staff on the Committee: Des Cassidy, Karen Briffa and Joe O’Sullivan. Thank you all for your hard work over the last 18 months. I wish you all a happy 125th, enjoy and take part.
Alan Blake Club Captain
years ago in 1893, six golf enthusiasts began to knock a ball around in what was known as the Old Park and decided to form a golf club. Before long there were 25 members of the Club. which became known as The Old Park 25 Club. It was one of the first 500 golf clubs to be formed in England. The Club started in a rather basic way with a big oak tree serving as both a shelter and a place where the Club held its official meetings. According to an inventory, Club ‘furniture’ consisted of a barometer and a notice board, both of which were attached to
the oak tree. Subscription for members was 2 guineas and wives of members also enjoyed the full privileges of membership. After the first year things began to change. Initially, A W Hutt, the Honorary Secretary of the Club, worked to improve the course. When F. Porter became captain in 1898 he concentrated on improving the greens. Whilst 2 years later, when captain, A C Young, was elected, the real improvements began. Hedges were uprooted, ditches drained and filled, while sand bunkers or playable hazards were substituted. Improvements to the course made the Club
much more popular. Soon there was a waiting list and the original plans to limit the membership to 25 were abandoned. By the turn of the century the Club committee began to think about expansion and a fourteen year lease was secured on sufficient land to extend the course, to 18 holes. The expenditure was guaranteed by the Club, now officially known as Enfield Golf Club, which then became a limited company. James Braid was the architect of the new 6000 yard course, which was completed in May 1903. Bicycle sheds, a caddie shelter, stables and workshops were built, along with a 120ft pavilion, which commanded fine views of the course. According to the records that have survived, the Club appears to have flourished in the twenties and early thirties as in February 1920, the Club was good enough to attract the Prince of Wales, who was a keen golfer. In 1928 the Club sold some land beyond the present 16th fairway and acquired new land which forms the present 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes. James Braid was again involved with the design. However, by the mid 1930’s the Club was in financial difficulties, owing to problems with the lease. Loyal members and staff kept things going throughout the war and the difficult years that followed. By 1950 things had improved and once
again the Club looked at expansion and extensions to the clubhouse were approved and electricity was installed. As the Club progressed, the committee were determined that the facilities should keep pace. By 1960 the clubhouse had been redesigned and again 15 years later, in 1975, extensive modernisation and improvements were completed. Amongst the major changes at this time was the construction of the balcony running the full length of the lounge and dining room. There has been more work and improvements carried out over the years that followed to ensure that, as well as an excellent and well cared for golf course, the Club can continue to offer excellent facilities for members and visitors which are both comfortable and welcoming.

Captains & Vice-Captains
very year, at the annual AGM, the Club members elect a Club Captain and a Ladies Captain, along with 2 Vice Captains to assist them in their duties. In this special quasquicentennial year, the elected members are:Alan Blake – Club Captain Cherry Kealy – Ladies’ Captain Jonathan Foster – Vice Captain The Captains and Vice Captains have many responsibilities, in particular, ensuring the well-being of all Club members. They are also
responsible for organising and attending many golf events and social functions during their year. They are assisted by the Club’s General Committee, chaired by Kim Wild, along with the Club Manager, Des Cassidy, and his staff. The Captains are kept extremely busy throughout their year, not only with golf, but also with meetings, committees and various social events. Each Captain chooses a charity to support and raises funds throughout their year. This year, Alan has chosen to support The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity and Cherry has nominated The North London Hospice.

n my role as Club Captain, it was difficult to choose which charity to support, but I finally chose The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity (HRCC). HRCC is dedicated to championing quality of life for everyone living with or affected by cancer. They are there to support men and women with all types of cancer at all stages; newly diagnosed, throughout and post treatment, as well as their wider support network of family, friends and carers. They offer care and support through the use of complementary therapies, counselling and information. The aim is to provide a safe place where clients can be themselves and don’t have to put on a brave face. Although there is no Government funding, there is no charge to clients for the services. For more information and to support this charity see: www.helenrollason.org.uk
he charity I have chosen for my year as Ladies’ Captain is the North London Hospice, who have been caring for local people since 1984. They help those with a potentially life-limiting illness who have specialist needs. Last year, during my uncle’s last weeks, I saw first hand the practical and emotional support that they provide and the real difference it can make. These services are provided free of charge by specially trained multi-professional teams, which include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, counsellors and chaplains. They rely on donations and legacies to meet the cost of providing three quarters of their care. I hope this year, with your help, we can make a difference. Sir Ian Botham
I thoroughly enjoyed my day at Enfield and would like to thank all members and guests for supporting my charity. I hope you all enjoy this very special anniversary year!
A huge thank you to Enfield Golf Club for supporting the Beefy Charity Foundation and our 2016 Golf Challenge, we had a wonderful day. The greeting we received at Enfield was superb and it was a shame we couldn’t play a few more holes. Have a great 125th anniversary and I hope to be back soon to play all 18.
A Year of Celebrations
e have many exciting and fun events planned for our 125th anniversary year, which runs from 1st March 2018 to the end of February 2019. This coincides with Captains, Alan Blake and Cherry Kealy’s years of captaincy and they will play a vital role in the planning and implementation of these very special occasions. The year will kick off with the Captains’ Drive-Ins, the weekend of the 3rd and 4th March. On the Sunday we will officially raise our new 125th Anniversary Flag. We have a newly designed logo that will be used throughout the year and the flag, which will be hoisted to the top of the Club’s flagpole, will then be the first thing that members and guests see when they drive into the Club’s car park. Many members are also buying golf clothing with the new logo, to give them a lasting souvenir of the year.
After the Captain’s Inaugural dinner in March and the Ladies Open competition in June, the next big spectacular is in July, when we celebrate our week-long Festival of Golf. This week begins on Saturday 7th July, with our regular Captain’s Day and will culminate with the big finale on the following Saturday, 14th July, when members will be able to ‘Play the Course the James Braid Way’ and celebrate afterwards with a BBQ, Disco and Firework Display. Throughout that week, we will be hosting a number of other special competitions and events. Both the Triangular Match and Rabbits v Wanstead fixture hold a special place in our hearts as they have both been played for many years and are regular highlights in our annual calendar. After that, we will again be hosting the Jamega Pro Tour in

The highlight is expected to be the Club’s 125th Anniversary Christmas Ball, although the New Year’s Eve Party should be a very close second!! The final event of the year
will be the Captain’s End of Year Celebration, when we will bid a fond farewell to Alan, Cherry and our 125th Anniversary year. We are all very much looking forward to the coming year – it should be a fantastic time for the Club and there really is something for everybody! Whether you are a playing or social member, a guest or visitor, we look forward to welcoming you to the Club in our very special year.

A Year of Celebrations
Centenary Triangular Match
Groundforce have held our annual golf day at Enfield Golf Club for the past 11 years. The Club management staff, catering crew and pro-shop team are all excellent and a real credit to the Club. Everybody involved does their utmost to ensure our clients have the best golf day experience possible. The course itself has been hugely improved in recent years with many enhancements to the original design. We at Groundforce congratulate Enfield Golf Club on your 125th Anniversary. What a marvellous achievement in this day and age. Colin Phillips, Regional Director, Groundforce
Enfield, Muswell Hill and Stanmore Golf Clubs each started life way back in 1893. All three clubs, being within the county of Middlesex, have long had a close relationship on and off the course. In 1993, the Centenary year, the three clubs got together and began the ‘Centenary Triangular Match’, which is played every year at alternating courses and involves twelve players of varying handicaps from each club. This year, on Monday 9th July, the 125th Anniversary Match will be played at Enfield where the format will be changed to accommodate a greater number of participants for this special occasion.
Rabbits v Wanstead Match This fixture is one of the most long running fixtures at Enfield Golf Club. The Rabbits have being playing a friendly match against Wanstead Golf Club every year since 1962. This is (apparently) the longest running friendly golf fixture in the South of England. This year, it is scheduled to be played on Wednesday 11th July. In recent times the Club Captain, Club Pro, General Manager and House Manager have been part of our 24-a-side team. Traditionally the losing Captain (Buck Rabbit) over the home and away fixtures each year wears the Rabbit Ears at the meal after the fixture.
Hole 1 Par 4 SI 10 363 yds 353 yds 323 yds Do you go for it? If you can clear 250yds with your drive then go for it. If not a layout short of the brook will leave you a short iron to a green protected by two bunkers.
Hole 2 Par 5 SI 8
Hole 3 Par 3 SI 18
517 yds 507 yds 412 yds
148 yds 142 yds 132 yds
A draw off the tee will hold the left to right slope of the fairway. A good drive will allow you to attack the green and a chance for an eagle, but careful of the 2 fairway cross bunkers.
A short uphill par 3 to a left to right sloping green. Easiest hole on the course & a good chance for a birdie.
Hole 4 Par 5 SI 14 514 yds 502 yds 425 yds Avoid the out of bounds on your right with your drive to leave a fairway wood to the green or long iron for position. Subtle breaks guard this unsuspecting green.
Hole 5 Par 4 SI 2
Hole 6 Par 3 SI 16
394 yds 390 yds 385 yds
131 yds 128 yds 117 yds
A tough uphill par 4 into the prevailing wind, which makes it play much longer than it looks. Drives should favour the left to avoid the fairway bunker. Beware of the two cross bunkers that guard the approach.
A short par 3 surrounded by 4 bunkers. Club selection is vital for a good birdie chance. Take note of the pin position and wind direction before choosing your club.
Hole 7 Par 4 SI 4
Hole 8 Par 4 SI 12
Hole 9 Par 5 SI 6
384 yds 372 yds 354 yds
386 yds 369 yds 352 yds
472 yds 470 yds 418 yds
The fairway slopes from left to right. A good drive to the right of the Oak tree will leave a short iron to a green protected by 2 bunkers with a narrow entrance.
Aim your tee shot to the left to guard against the out of bounds on your right. A good tee shot will leave a short iron to a green which slopes away from you.
Long hitters can drive the brook but a long iron off the tee will leave a rescue for position and a short pitch to this uphill par 5. A good birdie chance to close the front 9.
Hole 10 Par 3 SI 9
Hole 11 Par 4 SI 11
Hole 12 Par 4 SI 1
185 yds 178 yds 156 yds
333 yds 327 yds 313 yds
459 yds 444 yds 366 yds
A strong par 3 to open the back 9, usually played into the prevailing wind. Any shots missing the green will leave a difficult up & down.
A good tee shot short of the left hand fairway bunker will leave a short iron this treacherous green. Do not leave your approach above the hole.
A good drive to the left hand side of the fairway will leave you a fairway wood or long iron approach to an uphill green. This is a very strong 4, par here feels like a birdie!
Hole 13 Par 4 SI 5 320 yds 313 yds 274 yds Not a long par 4 which favours a fade off the tee for right handers to right to left sloping fairway. The green is protected by a deep bunker front left. Getting up & down from this bunker is very difficult.
Hole 14 Par 3 SI 13 164 yds 152 yds 129 yds A challenging downhill par 3 with Salmons Brook running diagonally across the hole. Also guarded by left & right bunkers. This is probably our prettiest hole.
Hole 15 Par 5 SI 3 480 yds 466 yds 454 yds A strategic par 5 which
demands concentration. Errant tee shots can find the brook on the right. A wellpositioned second shot will leave a short iron pitch to the green.
Hole 16 Par 4 SI 7
Hole 17 Par 4 SI 15
Hole 18 Par 4 SI 17
300 yds 296 yds 262 yds
348 yds 338 yds 344 yds
276 yds 266 yds 191 yds
The ideal tee shot is over the Ash tree in the centre of the fairway will leave a short pitch to the green. Beware of a mis-hit approaches as a watery grave in the brook awaits.
Drives should favour the left side of the fairway to leave a mid or short iron to this two-tier green. Any over hit approaches will find the moat at the back of the green.
An accurate drive will leave a short pitch to an uphill green. Long hitters can reach the green with the wind behind. Beware of out of bounds in front of the clubhouse.
nfield Golf Course is not only a haven for keen golfers but it is also home to a historic site, as well as a natural habitat to many species of wild life. Foxes and Muntjac deer are often seen strolling our fairways and birds of prey patrolling our trees. We have a medieval moated site, which is a listed and protected monument of historical significance on our property. It is believed that this site dates back to the time of King Henry VIII when Enfield Chase formed part of the Royal Hunting grounds. It would once have
contained a substantial dwelling, which is described in a survey of 1650, and was possibly home to one of the Park Ranger’s Lodges. More recently, it was used to house an aircraft defence battery during the Second World War. We are lucky to have Salmons Brook crossing our land and the brook features on eight of our eighteen holes. The brook brings many birds, including geese and ducks, to our course as well as recently a small White Egret. Other species of birds regularly seen include Kingfisher, Parakeet, Heron, Sparrow Hawk,
Swifts, Green & Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Mistle Thrush, Redwing, Long Tailed Tit, Grey Wagtail, Mandarin Duck, Red Kite & even Buzzards. Sometimes at dusk you may even notice Bats & Robins. The many species of trees include mighty Oaks, Ash, Cherry, Beech, Apple, Silver Birch, Willow, Poplar and Fir. In fact many of our trees are surveyed and catalogued and subject to regular maintenance inspections. Our Head Green Keeper, Mr Dane Watts, is a keen naturalist, and he has created a natural wildlife habitat on our course where no green keeping activity is allowed. This promotes natural growth and encourages many species of wildlife, birds and insects to flourish. Dane also plans to keep bees within this conservation area. Over the years the regulations regarding pesticides has changed. We are now using more modern and environmentally friendly agronomy techniques that are sympathetic to the indigenous wildlife. Therefore Dane and his team are constantly trying to find new methods to control unwanted weeds & disease on the course. We even hand pick weeds from our greens. Our watering system is fed from a borehole which draws water from underground wells. Our drainage system channels rain water back into existing water courses to help the ecology of the land. At Enfield Golf Club we are committed to conserving and promoting nature, allowing as many species as possible to enjoy the land, alongside our golfers for many, many years to come.
ere at Enfield Golf Club, we pride ourselves on being the friendliest golf club in North London. We have a very good reputation locally for being a very welcoming Club and for doing our very best to help new members settle in and get to know people. On joining as a playing member, you will be assigned a ‘buddy’ who will not only be happy to answer all of your questions, but also to guide you through all aspects of Club life: from how to get a handicap and enter the competitions to what happens on Captain’s
Day and what on earth the sausage stop is all about! We are a thriving Club, with successful Men’s, Ladies, Senior’s and Junior Sections. In particular, our flourishing Junior Section is much admired by many other surrounding golf clubs. We have an extensive range of Membership Packages - from Beginners and Juniors to 9 Hole and 5, 6 and 7 Day Playing Memberships. There are very attractive, reduced rates for the under 40s and no joining fees. We have regular Taster Sessions, for those just getting into golf, and our regular ‘swindles’ and ‘roll ups’ are
a great opportunity to meet other like-minded members and to make new friends. We have a full fixtures list throughout the year and participate in all County Competitions, as well as Inter-Club Competitions and Leagues. These fixtures cover all playing categories and, in addition, we also host a number of Open and Invitation Days. Our very special 125th anniversary year is a fantastic time to join the Club, as we have many exceptional events and competitions going on throughout the year and you would be very welcome to come along and join in the fun.
