DAVAO CITY-– San Pedro Police Station operatives seized more than P21-million worth of fake dollar and peso bills during an entrapment operation Wednesday afternoon at Rizal Park, San Pedro Street here. Chief Insp. Angel B. Sumagaysay, deputy chief for operations of San Pedro Police Station, said the fake money was recovered from one Lupe Sabatin, a resident of Macat, Barobo, Surigao del Sur during the 4:30 p.m. entrapment operation. Sumagaysay said the counterfeit money, composed of 47 one hundred dollar, five hundred and one thousand peso bills were placed in a bag in two bundles. “With this big amount of fake money, we can say that this modus operandi is part of the handiwork of a big-time syndicate,” Sumagaysay said. He said this observation was confirmed by a representative of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, who conducted an inspection of the seized fake money at the police station, saying the reproduction of such counterfeits needs expensive machines. “Maybe these were reproduced in Surigao since the suspect is a resident there,” he said. The suspect denied he owned the counterfeit bills, but claimed a friend left them making him believe that they were real.

Attending doctors at the Cebu City Medical Center panicked knowing that the victim has only 24 hours to live unless an anti venom is administered on him. The hospital has no antivenom and Manila hospitals have none too at that time. The Department of KEEPER/PAGE 11

Tingting Cojuangco’s party list storm LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you…” (Psalm 5:11, the Holy Bible). -oooTINGTING COJUANGCO RAISES A PARTY LIST STORM: Former Tarlac Gov. Margarita “Tingting” Cojuangco has raised, as it were, a storm over her being the first nominee of a party list group seeking accreditation for the 2013 elections representing the country’s farmers. Many are publicly objecting that Tingting is not qualified to become a party list representative, because she is not a marginalized citizen, assuming that she can be legally considered a farmer. The real issue here, however, is this: is there a legal prohibition against the likes of Tingting, a wealthy property owner and a member of a politically and economically powerful clan in the Philippines, from becoming a party list representative?

Based on a number of important decisions of the Supreme Court, it would appear that there is no prohibition, at least as of now, against Tingting becoming a partly list congresswoman. -ooo“RICH” PARTY LIST REPS NOT A SETTLED ISSUE: In the cases of “Belo, et. al. vs. Commission on Elections, et. al.” G.R. No. 191988, December 7, 2010; “Maza, et. al. vs. Commission on Elections and Arroyo,” G.R. No. 192769, and “Bayan Muna, et. al. vs. Comelec and Arroyo,” G.R. No. 192832, the Supreme Court was confronted with that same issue involving then Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo. Mikey was named as the first nominee of a party list group named “Ang Galing Pinoy”, representing security guards, and drivers and operators of tricycles. Several groups contested Mikey’s nomination, saying he was not qualified to become a party list congressman because he was rich and MAURICIO/PAGE 11

Think a minute…Is your voice good enough to sing a solo on T.V. or radio? If you’re like me, you’ll stick to singing in the shower only! So what are you good at? And compared to whom? If golf is your sport and you can beat your buddies in a round, how good are you compared to Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, or Veejay Singh? You and I cannot begin to measure up their worldclass standard of golf ! Years ago I had to learn a new language. After 3 months of study and practice, I felt quite good about my progress. Compared to the tourists, I was a whiz and very fluent. But compared to the locals, I talked like a

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst 5-year-old little boy. In the same way, we may look at some really bad people and feel quite good about ourselves. Compared to them, we almost look like saints! But compared to God, how good do we look? Well, who doesn’t look like dirt compared to our perfect Creator! Even if we locked ourselves away from all temptation and prayed all day for the rest of our lives, we still could not come

even close to being as pure and perfectly good as God is. So because we want to feel we’re still OK and good enough, we choose to compare ourselves to those really bad people. But there is only one way that God can accept you and me so we can live in a right relationship with Him. God has to give us the gift of His own perfect goodness. That’s why God the Son

became a human being to pay the penalty of death for all our wrongs and sins. Not His, since he has no wrongs to die for. Jesus wants to give you His perfect goodness free, so you can be good enough to become God’s child and enjoy His life with Him—both now and in heaven after you die. But it’s up to you to ask Jesus for His free gift of forgiveness and new life. Just ask Him to forgive you for all your wrongs and living your own way. Then ask Him to take full charge of your life and start changing your character with His kind of goodness inside every day, for the rest of your life. Just Think a Minute…

Climate Change in thePhilippines Recent scientific studies reveal that human activities have contributed significantly to the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that causes climate change. The Philippines is a hotspot for climate change disasters particularly the risk for agriculture and food security due to extreme El Nino and severe tropical cyclones. The spread of infectious diseases are inf luenced by f luctuations in climate variables, temperature, relative humidity and rainfall. Severe super typhoons like Reming that pummeled the Bicol region in 2006 destroyed at least $90-million worth of agricultural products and infrastructure. Diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, cholera have increased throughout the years. Climate change impacts on coastal zones and marine ecosystems caused massive coral bleaching especially in 1998 due to elevated sea temperature and fish kills and red tides like the one that occurred in 1992 which was an El Nino period. Scientists warned the Philippines could experience famine by 2020, as the adverse impact of global warming takes its toll on

natural resources. Thousands will be displaced from their homes especially in low-lying coastal communities. (POSTED BY IMAGINE ECHO PROJECTS/http://imagineechoprojectswaste. blogspot.com/)

Zacchaeus Got Saved

Jthrough esus wa s t ravel i ng southern Pales-

tine on his way to Jerusalem. The story that is found in Luke 19:1-9, tells us about the meeting of a certain tax collector named Zacchaeus and Jesus. Zacchaeus was one of the last people Jesus met before his death. Their encounter illustrates how Jesus can transform a person from the inside out. Jesus came to Jericho, Zacchaeus just had to “see what he was like. There were many in the crowd, but Jesus spotted right in on the short man in the tree. He had never met him, but called him by name: “Zacchaeus, hurry down,

The New Generation Alex A. Podador for I mean to stay at your house today.” To Jews, it was ritually impure by entering the house of a public sinner. But this, of course, was not any Jew. A sinner could not make Him impure. Rather, He would purify the sinner. People k new t h is, and were stunned. They began to grumble, but Zacchaeus “stood his ground.”

He was determined not to lose his chance of seeing Jesus. He instinctively knew that accepting Jesus into his home meant that his life had to change. His wealth had come at the expense of his people. Clinging to it would mean letting Jesus go. He had to choose. “I give half my belongings, Lord, to the poor. If I have cheated anyone in the least, I pay him back fourfold.”

Notice that he did not buy his forgiveness. He had already been offered mercy. Salvation came to Zacchaeus not by his initiative, but by God’s. Grace moved him out to the street and up the tree. And the offer to do lunch together was pure grace. Clearly Jesus announces that salvation has come to the man’s home. Salvation came to Zacchaeus because he was generous in giving away his money and paying back those he had wronged. Salvation came to Zacchaeus because Jesus had called him down from the tree and gone with him to his house. The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.

MISS KAGAY-AN 2012 CANDIDATES SHINE IN THEIR SHOWCASE OF TALENTS I

t was a perfect time for the candidates to showcase their individual talents as the Coronation Night is fast approaching. The highly anticipated fiesta event which is Miss Kagayan 2012 will be a night of glamour and sophistication in its Hollywood night theme. A Pinoy Big Brotherhousemate of ABS-CBN will in fact host the event along with Ms. Maxine Monasterio. Kapuso stars will also grace the show to serenade the

candidates as Ms. Anna Igpit, a former beauty queen will be one of the members of the board of judges. Adding to the glamour of the event is the presence of Ms. Cristalle Henares, from the Belo Medical Group representing her celebrity mom- Ms. Viki Belo as one of the pageant’s judges, another celebrity judge, Ms. Diana Meneses completes the list. But hey, lets get back to the talent of our candidates. Such a beautiful afternoon of rich

and endearing talents, from singing prowess of Miss Sidney Taboclaon, Roxine Monterde, Grey Mendoza and Kris Pajaron to the painting while singing ability of Laurice Inosa. Ms. Quennie Bahian provided a comic relief with her flair in bartending and dancing skills. Who would forget Miss Juriel Valledor and Emie Yamba in their authentic dance number? Leslie Ghanthough experienced a minor mishap carried through her

ballroom dancing skills as sister Elaine Ghan opted for a more subdued but emotional declamation piece entitled “Disty hands”. Candidate number one on the other hand, Lovely Estampa was very convincing in her declamation piece that truly pierced through the heart. Indeed, the judges had a hard time choosing this year’s Best in Talent. Chairman of the board of judges Cartwheel Foundation President Gigi Go said, that

though their choice was a unanimous decision among the judges, they still found it hard to finally choose the winner as everyone else was at their best. The Miss Kagay-an 2012 Talent Competition was held in SM City. The organizers, the City Tourism Board with its Chairperson, Mdm. Rhia Rita Y. Abalos was present along with guests City Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas, City Administrator Leon Gan and City Finance Officer Wilma Rugay.

Events... from page 1

These events started yesterday, August 17 and will wind up on August 19. Lisette Marquez, festival director of Duaw Dabaw Foundation, said the Hiyas ng Kadayawan coronation night, which was held last night, August 17 at Davao City Recreation Center (Almendras Gym), was open to the public. She said only the bleachers area was available to the general public as the courtside and lower part of the bleacher area has been reserved for guests of the city mayor’s office. She said available seats in the gym were on a first-come, first-serve basis. On Indak-Indak and Pamulak which will have the same parade route, there will be six bleachers opened to the public on a first-come first- serve basis. Orly Escarilla, Kadayawan 2012 festival director, said they are expecting the best performances as the incentive for the grand champion of the Indak-Indak has been raised to P500,000 compared to P300,000 last year. Escarilla said that the indak-indak this year has 20 competing contingents as compared to last year’s 22. Pamulak sa Kadayawan or the Floral Float Parade will have 23 entries; six floats for the large category, 12 entries for the small category and five non-motorized floats. There will also be 37 non-competing floats. Escarilla said purely walking contingents without floats have been disallowed from joining the f loral parade although Escarilla said that walking contingents are better fitted in Araw ng Dabaw civic military parade. He said that there will be centralized parking area for these floats at Roxas Avenue which would allow the public to take a close look at these elaborately designed floral floats. For tourists wanting to be part of the parade, the organizers have designated a special float which could accommodate 40 tour-

ists, dubbed as “Ride the Vibe” the float will take the tourists in the middle of the parade as part of the float procession. Interested individuals who would want to ride the special tourist float can register at the Duaw Dabaw office. (RGA-PIA11)

The Supreme C ourt added: “Nowhere in R.A. No. 7941 is there a requirement that the qualification of a party-list nominee be determined simultaneously with the accreditation of an organization.” Clearly, there is no clear cut rule on the matter as of yet.

Pamulak...

Kadayawan...

It is the most famous and much-awaited grand floral parade where one can see countless and breathtaking mobile floats full of real and fresh flowers and fruits. Two categories excite both the interested float artist and audiences – big and small categories teeming with artistry and glory as the floats impress Davao’s blessings of bounty considered to be one of Asia’s Most Liveable Cities.

or the Muslim holy month, on Aug. 20 has also been declared a national holiday with Malacañang issuing Procla mation No. 455 which provides that t he obser va nce of Eid ' l Fitr is to promote cultural understanding and integration of the entire Filipino nation to join our Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid'l Fitr. Eid'l Fitr is celebrated by Muslims for three days after the end of the month of fasting. The observance of Ramadan started last July 20. In November last year, President Benigno Aquino also issued Proclamation No. 295 which included the declaration of August 21 as one of the special nonworking days for 2012. powerful. In its decision, the tribunal refused to rule on the issue and left it hanging, with the argument that because Mikey was already a proclaimed congressman, the Supreme Court no longer had any right to pass upon the issue of his qualifications as a party list representative. The issue properly belonged to the House Electoral Tribunal, the court added. -oooCOMELEC’S DUTY IN DETERMINING QUALIFICATIONS OF NOMINEES: On the other hand, in the case of “Bantay Republic Act 7941, et. al. vs. Commission on Elections, et. al.”, G.R. Gwendolyn Garcia were able to get help from Aviatour, a private airline based in Lapu-Lapu City. He said the CCMC staff were happy that Aventurado’s condition improved, since this is the first time the hospital treated a snake bite from a highly venomous Philippine cobra. Gov. Garcia thanked Camiguin Gov. Jurdin Jesus Romualdo for helping save the life of Aventurado. She said the incident is a wake-up call for Cebu to keep its own supply of snake anti-venom even if the province is not known to host venomous snakes such as the Philippine cobra. With wire report

Two more Moro rebel camps in Ma’danao fall • MILF to join in the hunt of members of breakaway Bangsamoro rebels. CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao -- Two more satellite camps of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) have fallen into government hands in the continuing military manhunt against Moro rebels in Maguindanao, the Army said Thursday. The recovery of two more camps, described by Col. Prudencio Asto, as “satellite camps,” came a day after some 500 government soldiers, aided by paramilitar y troops and backed by helicopter gunships and armored personnel carriers, overran a major BIFF camp - Camp Omar - in Datu Hoffer, Maguindanao. “There was no resistance, the rebels were no longer there but we recovered hundreds of empty shells of various caliber, personal belongings and documents about the BIFF organization,” Asto, speaking for the 6th Infantry Division, said. He said two more satellite camps are up for recovery as government forces were carefully scouring the area for booby traps and improvised bombs. An Army battalion was deployed in Camp Omar to prevent the guerillas

from retaking it. The BIFF is now a lawless group after its members were removed from the ranks of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the BIFF is the subject of joint manhunt between soldiers and MILF rebels, according to Von Al Haq, Haq, speaking for the MILF, said under the general agreement on the cessation of hostilities, the MILF and the Army will join forces in tracking down lawless elements, kidnappers, terrorists and lawless groups found hiding or within the vicinity of MILF identified camp. He said should the military launch offensive against BIFF, the MILF will be willing to reposition its forces to avoid mis encounter. “No BIFF member is hiding in MILF camps, rest assured we will not coddle them,” Haq said in response to reports that some MILF members coddle BIFF forces because they were related by blood. “We are checking that, but that is impossible,” he added. When asked where Kato is, Haq said as far as the MILF is concerned, he is already gone.
