Commitment and Social Responsibility In its 167th year, the Wilson, Sons Group carries on its ongoing contribution to the economic development of Brazil and to improvement in the quality of Life of the Brazilian population. In the last few years, the Group has been intensifying its participation in projects and involvement related to the communities in which it operates directly. The summary of this corporate involvement is described in this first Social & Welfare Report published by Wilson, Sons, describing the efforts made throughout the Group in applying the concepts of social responsibility and demonstrating the main community initiatives that receive it support . The model used is the one recommended by Ibase, a Non-Governmental Organization founded by sociologist Herbert de Souza – “Betinho”. The strategic focus of the corporate social responsibility employed by Wilson, Sons is in the support it gives to projects directed towards integral development of children and adolescent youths, with the objective of ensuring them full citizenship. Within the same but broader concept of a social commitment, the Group also supports projects and programmes in environmental, cultural programmes and the inclusion of the disabled, in addition to active encouragement in mobilising society in the fight against hunger and sub-nutrition. We believe that by adopting such a broad perspective we are actively contributing to a building a sustainable development model, based on social justice, on economic development and on true respect for natural resources, with due consideration to the current generation and, especially, to generations to come. Our aim is to upgrade our corporate social responsibility work, based on a solid and integrated company policy. Now that the first steps have been taken, we will strive for continuing improvement of our accomplishments, based on the values and principles that we dedicate ourselves to cultivating in conjunction with our partner public: developing and stimulating our work team with opportunities for promotion and due reward for the contributions they make; transparency and total quality in the services rendered to our customers; respect for our shareholders; an ongoing commitment to Brazil’s sustainability and growth; and to the country’s public policies.

In its 167th year, the Wilson, Sons Group is, today, one of the largest business corporations and is a mark of excellence in Brazil. It is an amalgamation of companies with complementary activities within its field of operations, but has also has engineered an assembly of negotiations in which it is a leader or prominent actor in this market. The company is “hands down” leader in tugboat operations with vessels entering and leaving Brazilian ports . In the Shipping business, Wilson, Sons companies are hugely present in providing support services to shipowners, freight forwarders, importers and exporters. Wilson, Sons is one of the main logistic operators in the country, with companies dealing in storage and distribution, transportation and bonded warehousing. It has businesses in public and private ports, in which it is outstanding for the production improvements it has made. The Group operates Offshore Logistics Terminals, dedicated to meeting with the market growth in prospecting and exploration in deepwater oilfields. The Group has invested in shipbuilding with the Wilson, Sons shipyard in Guarujá, on the coast of the State of São Paulo. In addition to building the tugs for its own fleet, the biggest in Latin America, the shipyard also builds Platform Supply Vessels, to attend the needs of offshore oil rigs. For providing port infrastructure requirements, the Group maintains a company for dredging channels and port waterways. Today, the group has 2,766 employees throughout the whole of Brazil, developing personnel training courses and contributing continuously to improvements in its corporate social responsibility activities.

Education and Culture

Integrated Personnel Development. The Wilson, Sons group has sponsored the best educational institutions in the communities in which it has been present. One of the most important programmes in this type of campaign is the work developed at the “Ramis Galvão” Fishing Community school, located on the banks of the access channel between the city of Rio Grande (RS) and the Port Terminal area. Partnership of the Group with the Praticagern da Barra (Pilotage), Agências Marítimas (Shipping agents), Tecon RG (container terminal), the Fusileiros Navais (Brazilian Marine Corps), Ipiranga (petroleum) and other institutions enable an expansion project for the school to be carried out.. The ‘Ramis Galvão” school, which taught 42 students, now attends 124 in daytime classes. The funds raised made it possible to build two new classrooms and a library. The premises have become a meeting place for the fishing community. Also in Rio Grande do Sul, the Group has contributed to activities at the “Assis Brasil” trade training school, in Vila Carreiros. Another aspect of the Group’s support is the donation of computers and overlock sewing machines. The objective of this school, which operates various activities, such as a knitted fabrics workshop, is to provide adequate educational preparation, with a view to placing young people on the job market.

History of Boats Wilson, Sons has sponsored various cultural projects such as the publication of the book “Brazilian Boats”, written by Eduardo Junqueira and Gustavo Malheiros. This book records the development of craftsman- and industrial-built boats used on the Brazilian coastline. It takes you on journey over almost five centuries, covering the adaptations made by Portuguese colonists to craft used by the original South American indians, to present-day utilization of new manufacturing materials, such as glass fibre. The decline of craftsmen-built boats is dealt with in this book, which also documents the efforts of shipyards in cities such as Recifé (PE), Natal (RN), Fortaleza (CE) and Salvador (BA), in conserving the culture of traditional boat designs to add appeal to the tourist industry.

Social / Environmental Projects Protecting the sea to guarantee sustainability The main concern of social / environmental projects, is to contribute to a model for sustainable development which guarantees a natural balance and protects the delicate network of ecosystems in the marine environment. The creation of “artificial reefs” along the coast of Pernambuco state is part of this work. Deliberate sinking of tugboats has created a series of underwater research laboratories. Researchers from the Federal and State Universities of Pernambuco have developed important surveys on the underwater eco-system and are studying the behaviour of and the development of marine species on the “artificial reefs”. The deliberate sinking constituted the first shipwrecks authorised by the Port Authority and IBAMA (the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). The wrecked tugs have also become part of the tourist attraction itinerary offered by the State of Pernambuco and are frequently visited by scuba divers, with due approval of the authorities responsible.

Children and Adolescents

Eyes on the future The Wilson, Sons Group considers work with children and adolescent youths as being one of its principle focuses of social responsibility because it believes that it can, this way, retrieve active citizenship and juvenile protagonism, therby defeating the concept of mere assistencialism. Faced with this preoccupation, the Group has destined funds to the Outreach to Minors in the Parish of Rio de Janeiro, which, over 18 years, has given assistance to 25,000 children and adolescents in educational and professional guidance and in achieving true citizenship. The movement is linked with the Family Project, which aims at preventing family breakdown, which leads to an increase in risk situations for children and adolescents. A similar kind of support is given to the Casa Jimmy project, also established in Rio de Janeiro. This institution has received the benefit of funds passed on by the Group. Casa Jimmy is a Task Brazil Trust project, organised and founded in 1992, in London. It operates as a home for children and pregnant adolescents, many of them sent on for adoption. Since its inauguration here in 1998, Casa Jimmy has helped 250 children.

Safe Nutrition For Human Dignity Counting on the support from all of its business units, the Wilson, Sons Group has taken part in collecting foodstuffs for safe nutrition projects, such as those coordinated by the Rio de Janeiro Food Bank. Just in the city of Rio de Janeiro, half a ton of non-perishable food was collected by the Group, during the end-of-year festivities, in aid of that institution. The Project is an initiative taken by the Serviço Social do Comércio (SescRJ), to combat hunger, undernourishment and wastage of food. The Bank also promotes the collection of food and nutritional supplements for thousands of persons, via more than 70 institutions. With the same objective, teams of volunteers formed within the Group carry out campaigns for collecting food during the Group’s June Festival. The campaign resulted in a donation of 300 kilos of food to needy families cared for by the Parish of Saint Geraldo in the district of Olaria in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Special Needs and Health Care

Projects strive for full social inclusion Entities focused on helping minorities with some kind of diability, or with health problems, receive funds for financing their activities. These are initiatives aimed at full social inclusion, the fight against cancer, the rehabilitation of dependents on narcotics and the inclusion of those with visual deficiency. The Association for Assistance to the Blind, in Fortaleza, receives monthly donations from the Group. This institution is one of the oldest traditional providers of assistance to the Blind in the whole of the Brazil’s North Eastern region. It maintains a hospital, an eye bank, a Braille book library and other sections. There is a staff of interns specialised in the area of visual deficiency. The Women’s Cancer Treatment Clinics in São Francisco do Sul (SC) operates in attending men and women sufferers of this disease, offering medical assistance, medication and food parcels delivered to the families of the patients. In addition to providing funds, Wilson, Sons also organises projects for donations to these entities and promotes Recycling Programmes to help the various institutions. In Recife, Wilson, Sons sends paper for recycling in aid of the Children’s Friends Association at the Barão de Lucena Hospital, specialised in cancer treatment. The company also donated computers for the Vida Nova Therapy Unit in Vila Bolaxa, in aid of rehabilitation of chemical drug addicts, and coordinates, in conjunction with the British Consulate, an expansion of that establishment. The “Dr. Miguel Riet Corrêa junior” University Hospital in Rio Grande has received children’s clothing and blankets at that unit, made up by volunteers. The sewing machines on which these articled were made were donated by Wilson, Sons. Participation in this project is shared by the Rio Grande Town Council and the and the hospital that is part of the Children’s Friends organisation, an initiative of the World health Organization, Unicef and the Ministry of health.

Voluntary Work, Philanthropy and Community Interaction Commitment to all with social welfare programmes O Not only has the Wilson, Sons Group encouraged its employees to volunteer for social work, but it has met with the costs of initiatives in aid of important institutions serving local communities. One important example is the Maternity and Children’s Institute in Pernambuco, located in Recife. This establishment has received monthly contributions from the company for maintaining its service to low-income families. The institute is registered by the Ministry of Health as a National Reference Centre for Women’s and Children’s Integrated Aid Programme. The Wilson, Sons Group has also donated computers and overlock textile machines for an apprentice training centre at the Maria do Carmo Orphanage, an entity in Rio Grande (RS) accommodating orphans from 1 to 15 years of age. Helped by the British Consulate in that city, funds have been raised in conjunction with the British Embassy for use in construction of a new day care centre and the building of a workshop and a recreation area for girls. These improvements provide more comfortable conditions and enable more children to be accommodated. In Salvador, the Message of Christian Love Association (Amac) also received help in expansion of its . This particular movement is part of the Children’s Home Project, which started in Recife (PE) and subsequently engaged the help of architects, with the help of the Ayrton Senna Institute, for volunteer work in various cities, as in the case of Amac. The Children’s Home Project has helped throughout Brazil, 1,800 children and has involved 627 construction companies and 1,004 architects, being responsible for 23,113M2 of buildings. In addition to the foregoing, the Suzana Wesley School, which attends more than 400 children in the Rocinha community, Rio de Janeiro, received toys collected by Wilson, Sons employees for Children’s Day.
