Stars are cinching it in on the red carpet this season, employing belts to tie together a perfect shape-defining look. Whether thin and dainty or bold and bejeweled, the waist-cinching accessory draws attention to the figure and can transform an outfit. Designer Deborah Drucker, who made Katy Perry’s leather dress, notes that the sparkly belt (which she didn’t design) “brings this edgy gown to a more ladylike place.”

A splash of blue on the eye area can be both playful and sophisticated when applied the right way, says Allison Williams’s makeup artist Mélanie Inglessis. A word of advice? “Keep the color below your crease, and don’t elongate it too far past the outer corners of your eyes—you don’t want to look like you just stepped out of an ’80s music video.”

1 Pull a look together with accessories. “I’ve known [jewelry designer] Lorraine Schwartz for more than 15 years. I love going to her office and working on pieces. Sometimes we choose a big, bold statement necklace; other times it’s a stack of charm bracelets. Jewelry can make a whole look come to life.” 2 Flatter the parts of your body you love most. “This beaded Michael Kors gown was so heavy, but I didn’t care. It was really beautiful on the bust, and it felt like wearing a bra, which is why I loved it.” 3 Keep an inspiration board. “I’m always looking at fashion shows online, thinking ‘I’d die to have this dress for a red carpet event!’ I fall in love with looks almost immediately.” 4 Stock up on underpinnings. “Fashion is not as modest as it used to be. Slits are higher than ever and plunging necklines are lower than ever. Sometimes they go down to your navel! If you don’t want photographs showing off everything, there are amazing solutions, like double-stick tape and cleavage pads.” 5 Let your feelings guide you. “I feel great in my skin, so I wear whatever I want, but my looks always rely on what I’m doing and my mood. Sometimes I’ll have my boobs on display, and other times I’ll do a crazy manicure. It just depends!” 6 Embrace any opportunity to go all out. “I love that I get to wear designer gowns, like the purple Zac Posen gown I wore to the Bambi Awards in 2015. Literally, the people sitting next to me were also wearing my gown because I couldn’t fit into my seat.”

hat’s the secret to looking spectacular over 70? Helen Mirren attributes her hourglass figure to a daily 12-minute fitness routine and her youthful visage to a love of makeup. (Her top beauty tip: “You can get away with naked eyes if you’ve got red lips,” she says. “Or red lips and sunglasses!”) And for someone who always looks so stylish, she never takes her fashion choices too seriously. She rewears favorite dresses on the red carpet (more than five times!), cuts her own hair and embraces her age: “Your 40s are good. Your 50s are great. Your 60s are fab. And 70 is f---ing awesome!” She’s not kidding. The Collateral Beauty star has modeled for L’Oréal Paris, Marks & Spencer and the famously steamy Pirelli calendar, shared cheeky onscreen kisses with James Marsden and Stephen Colbert and garnered a coveted status as one to watch on red carpets from New York City to Cannes. Truly this daring dame redefines what sexy means for the septuagenarian set.

If you’re going in for a big change, make sure it fits your lifestyle. “If you don’t like to blow-dry your hair, a layered look or bangs might not work,” Brager says. “Or if you can’t commit to coming in for a root touch-up every six to eight weeks, stick with your natural color.” CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: NEILSON BARNARD/GETTY IMAGES; PASCAL LE SEGRETAIN/GETTY IMAGES; STEVE GRANITZ/WIREIMAGE; DAVID LIVINGSTON/GETTY IMAGES; DONATO SARDELLA/GETTY IMAGES; KEVORK DJANSEZIAN/GETTY IMAGES

REMEMBER TO TIP

Hairstylists are in the service industry, so tipping is important to their livelihoods. “I usually suggest 20 percent for the stylist, and $5 to $10 for the assistant,” says Brager. “Though, if you’re unhappy with your hair, do not feel pressured to do so. It will only make you more upset!”

You have access to top pros. Why do you choose to do your own makeup? I sometimes feel more confident doing it myself. It’s fun, and I always love the results. I have people who I trust for big events, but if I’m not familiar with a makeup artist, I usually end up tweaking something, like making my lips a little darker or adding shimmer to my cheekbones. What’s the most important trick you’ve learned? Translucent powder makes a huge difference in pictures—it sets everything and takes away shine. The most important things for me are my lips, tamed eyebrows—I shape them with hairspray and a mascara wand— and clean, dewy skin. So I always play around with balancing those aspects. Have you had any major mishaps? I’ve seen photos of myself on the carpet and been like, “Oh no, I did a little too much bronzer!” But you’re your own worst critic. Even when I make mistakes, I learn from them.

Lip Look of the Season

When stars want to steal the show, they swipe on this perennial favorite

The classic lip color is not only captivating, but when a woman wears it, “she exudes confidence,” says Tracee Ellis Ross’s makeup artist Jamie Greenberg. The secret to making the look last, she notes, is layering. “First, apply a lip stain. Then, outline the lips using a flesh-tone lip liner and fill them in with a red lip liner. Next, blot the lips, apply the lipstick, blot again and apply one more layer,” she says.

TURMERIC

The secret to a starworthy glow may be sitting in your spice cabinet. Whether used topically or ingested, turmeric, most commonly found in curry dishes, “has been embraced as an anti-inflammatory agent,” says Dr. Frank Lipman, M.D., a doctor and wellness expert who has worked with Gwyneth Paltrow and Maggie Gyllenhaal. In addition to its beauty benefits, he says, it may “improve your mood by boosting serotonin and dopamine levels, and increase cognitive function.” Double win!

Celebrity beauty guru Joanna Vargas says incorporating this do-itall spice into your skin care routine can help enliven dull skin, fight aging and prevent breakouts. Try mixing it into her DIY mask (see below for the recipe). “Matcha is an antioxidant-rich green tea powder that increases circulation and brightens your complexion,” says Vargas. “Yogurt exfoliates and reduces inflammation, while banana adds tons of moisture.”
